《Fireflys》Chapter 6

"Wartworms?" I asked once me, Polly, and Sprig began walking to the woods.

"Yeah, they're big worms!" Polly chuckled.

"They like to hang out under the leaves, so we should go get some rakes." Sprig said, running off to a shed.

He returned moments later carrying a few different types of rakes.

I grab one of them from him.

Wow.

Who knew that being a finger short feels so...fine? I thought I was going to have to re learn how to grab things, but this seems alright. Also, having bigger feet makes up for having two toes! And now the atmosphere finally feels refreshing!

We got into the woods and immediately saw big patches of leaves.

"Let's split up and cover move ground." I suggested.

"Yes, and first one with a full bucket wins!" Polly gave a devilish chuckle, and hopped away.

Another competition? I think she's addicted..

I turn and walk over to an area with a decent amount of leaves. Now, to rake.

I raked. And raked. Out of my pile? ONE DAMN WORM!! The rest of the bugs were beetles!

I looked at the one small worm, which sat at the bottom of the bucket. Ugh..maybe another place?

I found the mother load!! My bucket was already crawling with tons of worms! I moved in further to the woods, and saw Anne raking another area. I almost mistook her again...it's difficult to adjust to a new image.

I looked down at her bucket, which rested near a tree. There was probably, a dozen worms? It's been a half hour...

I looked in my bucket. I can just, give her some of mine.

Without her looking back, I quickly poured some of my worms into her bucket. It was almost filled, so I quickly backed away before she could see. Once I was in the clear, I let out a sigh.

"Hehe, I saw that." Polly appeared and started to chuckle, crossing her arms, "you want her to win, huh?"

"Well..I just wanted to help, that's all.." I rubbed my arm.

"Yup, totally." She gave a smug look, "sooooo, you like her as a frog?"

"Well.. I like her no matter what she looks like." I shrug.

"Yeah, But doesn't she look so pretty?"

"What are you getting at, Polly?" I cross my arms in annoyance. What's she trying to do?

"I don't know. Just curious to see if you lovvveee her." She winked.

Love her?! The hell Polly! I think you've watched too much shows on Anne's cell phone...

Love?

"Bro? You zoned out there for a second." Polly chuckled.

"Huh?" I questioned

"Do you like her or not? Because I want to be the mud-girl at your bonding ritual!"

The heck?!

"P-Polly!" I say annoyed.

"Mud-girl" I hear behind me, "I can arrange that." Anne chuckled, throwing a ball of mud at Polly.

Polly gasped in horror, and then began to laugh as she also made a mud ball and chucked it at Anne.

"Oh you're going down!" Polly laughed.

They threw mud at each other, while I stood back and watched.

But I couldn't get Polly's words out of my head.

Do I love her?

I mean, yeah, she's my friend. And that magazine did say that 'just friends' often are soulmates..but...I've never felt this way for anyone. Even to the person I'm 'engaged' to.

How do I know-

Mud brought me out of my trance as it hit me in the gut.

"Hehehe." Anne laughed, victoriously.

"Oh, you're on!" I laughed, getting some mud and flinging it at her.

After about a few minutes of getting mud-soaked, we headed back to the house with buckets filled with Wartworms.

Hop Pop was out watering Bessie.

"What happened to you all?!" Hop Pop asked, looking at us covered with mud.

"Uhhhh... mud war?" I chuckled.

Hop Pop came over and grabbed the buckets from us.

"How about I drop you three off at the lake to wash off?" He said, setting the buckets on the back of Bessie.

"Yessss!!" Polly and Anne said excitedly.

We all got on the back of Bessie, and headed back to the lake. Hop Pop dropped us off.

"I'm gonna go sell these worms in town. I'll be back in about an hour, Alright?"

Polly and Anne immediately starting running towards the water, so I followed quickly behind. We washed off and hung out for a bit, but I began to get bored.

"Can we go into town now?" I asked.

"Wwhhaatt?! I'm a frog now, and I can't even go for a swim??" Anne groaned, but then began to chuckle, "naw, that's fine. Let's go Polly!" She grabbed Polly, and we left the lake.

Town wasn't too far of a walk, and we saw Hop Pop walking back to Bessie. The sun was almost done setting.

"Hey Hop Pop!" I called, running up to him.

"Hey kids! Got bored, did ya?" He chuckled.

Ooohhhh. What's that smell?!

"I'll be right back." I said, placing down Polly and walking more into town.

I walked until I saw a little food stand. There was a frog in front.

"What're you selling?" I asked.

He lifted up a roasted insect skewer. Ahhhhhh my mouth's watering.

"Would you like one, darling?" He smirked.

"Yes! How much?!"

"It's on the house for you princess." He winked.

Okay. Weird.

"Well, thanks." He handed me the skewer and I took a bite.

"This is soooo good!" I gasped.

I never thought I could like bugs so much! It's like my taste buds got increased!

The frog leaned over the counter and looked closer at me, resting his head in his hands.

"Where do you live, Princess?"

I gulped down my food and pointed back at Hop Pop, Sprig, and Polly.

"The Plantars, Huh?" He chuckled, "well it looks like the little one's waving to you. I'll see you around."

"Alright?" I shrugged, walking away.

That guy's weird...but the foods good.
