Warnings: none
You were once again on your way to Alfred's house.
It was more of a mansion than a house, but over the years you had gotten used to his lifestyle being... a bit above standards.
You didn't mind at all, you loved him after all, maybe even a little too much.
Alfred was your best friend, and you had been best friends for years.
But in those years you had gradually fallen for him, each day a little bit more.
Since he was your best friend, and a shy person as well, you didn't want to tell him, since you were too afraid of rejection and the awkwardness that would follow.
So you kept your silence whenever you saw each other, be it in public, at his or your place, or during one of your beloved sleepovers.
You knew having sleepovers with guys was risky, well at least in the eyes of the public, but you couldn't care less what people thought.
It was risky for you though, because seeing Alfred in his pajamas made your heart ache.
Whereas some people settled for sweatpants or simply boxers as sleepwear Alfred usually wore the kind of two piece pajamas you usually only saw in black and white movies, the kind that had button up silk shirts.
It was an odd detail, but what you loved most about Alfred was his character, and the little odd details and ticks he had.
Alfred was never weird in the sense of the word, but he could seem otherworldly sometimes.
That was another thing you loved about him.
Alfred opened the door for you and you moved inside from the cold, but not before letting your eyes roam over his body.
Even though the only thing you two would be doing was make dinner, probably eat too much, watch tv and then fall asleep on the couch, only rarely making it to the bed before you dosed off he wore one of his favorite sweatshirts, a honey colored turtleneck, and brown chinos.
Some people didn't even put that much style into their outfits whenever they went out.
You smiled widely as you moved in to hug him, your arms wrapping around his shoulders, face nuzzled into his beautiful long hair.
A hug from him always cleared any bad thoughts you might have had.
You always had to stand on your toes to reach him, because he was so much taller than you, but the shoes you wore luckily supported you in holding your position.

You loved the height difference between the two of you, the way Alfred would sometimes put his head on top of yours sheepishly whenever he was deep in thought.
The smell of Alfred and especially his shampoo made you remember another reason why you loved sleeping at his place.
You would be able to shower in the morning, and you loved it because you were allowed to use Alfred's shampoo.
You loved that you'd smell like him for the rest of the day, a sweet but dark scent that had you weak in the knees.
"It's good to see you, Alfie", you said as you pulled back, and you could swear you saw Alfred blushing at the nickname only you could call him.
He chuckled at that.
"We saw each other this morning", he reminded you, but of course you knew that.
"And? Doesn't mean I can't miss my best friend", you answered, but you winced slightly when you called him a friend.
Alfred became serious again, closing the door he nodded, turning to walk to his bedroom where you could put your bag down.
"Of course not", you heard him murmur and you smiled at that.
After dinner, which you tried to cook together but ended up messily throwing pasta in a pot and spoiling the sauce, though you ate it anyways, you were sprawled out on the couch, your legs over Alfred's as you watched a tv show together.
The show wasn't very good and you were quite bored, but at the same time you were too lazy to say or do anything.
You just lay there, feeling Alfred's hands lightly graze over your legs that were draped in his lap, almost as if caressing them.
Or tickling.
Once his fingers traced a particularly ticklish spot you involuntarily let out a giggle.
It surprised the both of you, making you blush in embarrassment and Alfred look at you with a small sheepish grin on his face.
You looked back at him, groaning softly.
You knew how much Alfred loved it when you giggled, and you knew that he'd start to tickle you again soon.
Reacting quickly you took one of the pillows beside you, knocking him in the face with it.
The confused and amused look on his face made you laugh again.
After a few seconds of his silence during which you awaited his reaction he finally said something.
"Did you just hit me? With a pillow? Oh. It's on now", he groaned and moved so he was facing you, holding you at your waist gently so you couldn't escape.
You shrieked softly when he again began to tickle you.
You were behaving like children, but sometimes that was necessary.
Wiggling under him you tried to get out of his grip, but it only lead to Alfred losing his balance, and falling flushed on top of you.

It made you giggle again, but the both of you were silent, staring at each other because of how close you were.
The end of Alfred's hair tickled you cheeks, which would have made you giggle yet again, but the mere fact that his lips were mere centimeters away from yours stifled the laugh.
You were only able to stare at him, and he at you.
After a while you saw Alfred making a decision.
He looked at you differently, and you had an idea as well.
Moving your head up towards his you waited for the right moment.
To your surprise you saw Alfred's eyes closing, and his lips slightly opening, as if he was anticipating yours.
You didn't originally had kissing him in mind, but once you saw that he obviously had you considered, but decided against it.
Mere millimeters away from his lips you chuckled at how Alfred had let down his guard completely.
"If you want me, come and get me", you chuckled against his lips as you pushed him up gently, moving away from the couch and running out of the room grinning.
Reaching the kitchen you let out a breath, you back hitting the kitchen isle as you though about what had just happened.
Alfred had thought you wanted to kiss him.
And he had wanted it too.
You closed your eyes and you head hit the wood of the isle behind you in annoyance at your stupidity.
You had just unintentionally rejected your best friend.
And though he hadn't made any advances neither of you were stupid enough not to know what he had had in mind.
You got up from the floor, scolding yourself for how you could have been so childish.
When you reached the livingroom you saw that the tv had been turned off, and that Alfred was still sitting on the couch, this time with his face buried in his hands.
Once he heard you at the door he looked up, and shortly after he stood up as well, moving a bit further towards you.
He looked torn and regretful over how he had behaved and you hated it.
"I'm sorry", you said simultaneously.
Alfred just shook his head, having his hair messily fall into his face in the process, which only added to showing his disheveled state.
"No, don't be, I overstepped our boundaries, I'm sorry", he began to apologize quickly, the words rushing out of his mouth.
"I didn't think... I mean I didn't mean to... I...", Alfred stuttered around.
You moved forward quickly, nearly throwing yourself at him as you wrapped your arms around his neck, standing on the balls of your feet as you unceremoniously crashed your lips against his.
Alfred didn't react at all, he seemed frozen in place, until he finally wrapped his arms around your waist, pulling you closer and lowering his head so it was a more comfortable position for you.
You were kissing your best friend, and it was the best thing you had ever felt.
After a few seconds you pulled away, completely untangling yourself from him so there was no contact between the two of you anymore.
Standing back on your heels you looked up at Alfred, seeing the small breathless smile he wore.
It made you feel giddy, and all you wanted to do was dive back in to kiss him.
But you wouldn't, you didn't want to make a rushed decision induced by hormones, you wanted to make a decision you could live with.
Alfred reached his hands out and took yours in them, watching you carefully.
It was such an Alfred thing to do, a gesture only a romantic lead in a classic novel would make, and it made your knees weak.
You looked back at him, speechless and contempt.
"I wanted to do that in a long time", you whispered after a bit of silence.
You smiled when he nodded.
"Me too", he answered, it was a very short answer especially for Alfred, but you loved it nevertheless.
You were halfway there to quoting 'Little Women' by saying 'I've loved you ever since I've known you', but you settled for your own words.
"I had a crush on you since the first time I met you, and I'm sorry for the way I acted just now. I don't know, I only realized after it was too late that you expected me to kiss you", you chuckled at that and he blushed profusely.
It was a very cute sight to take in.
Leaning forward you let go of one of his hands to pull some of his hair behind his ear so you could see him better.
Then you moved your hand back to hold his.
"If I asked you to be my girlfriend, what would you say?", Alfred asked you softly and you chuckled at that.
"I'd say yes, of course", you answered, the smile on your face grew brighter and brighter, and his did the same.
"So?", you asked cheekily and the smile you wore transformed into grin, whereas Alfred's vanished in confusion.
"What?", he asked, which made you laugh.
"Ask, dummie!", you laughed and he chuckled once he realized what you meant.
"Right, do you want to be my girlfriend?", he asked softly and you nodded, leaning in again.
"I'd love that", you answered before you kissed him.

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above.
