《Breathe Princess (Daryl Dixon Love Story)》Chapter Fifty Five

Aaron came too not long after Rick had punched him and the others had tied him up. He gave this long winded speech about us being good people, telling us that there was one more person out there along route 16 waiting for the group to see if they could bring us all back.

Michonne, Maggie, Glenn, Abraham and Rosita all left in a group to go and see if they could find this other mysterious person that was waiting for Aaron to return; the rest of us all leaving the barn to keep watch around the perimeter. Rick stayed behind for Judith and to keep an eye on Aaron where as I stood with Daryl; everyone else in groups of two spread out around the barn.

"Are you okay?" I asked Daryl after a few minutes of standing around in silence, our backs facing the barn and my gun in my hand. I didn't know if I was going to need to fire it any time soon but it was good to have it with me; Daryl on the other hand held his crossbow as usual.

"I'm fine, Annora." He wasn't, I knew he wasn't. After everything that had happened with Beth back at the hospital there was no way he was going to be okay.

He had cared about her, in the time that we had spent away from the prison and out in the woods, he had become fond of her.

"Well, I'm not." He didn't look over to me even as I spoke. "I miss her, and Ty." Daryl sighed and finally looked towards me, dropping his cross bow to his side as we spoke.

"I wish I could have saved you sooner, I tried but then Carol got taken and I knew I was out of my depth on my own," He began talking, the guilt in his eyes was evident. "I needed the others to take them all on."

"I know, I don't hold that against you Daryl, you found us and that's all I was hoping for." I let go of my pistol with my left hand and grabbed hold of his free one, lacing my fingers with his. "Even after everything that's happened we still have each other, we're gonna be okay and maybe this thing with Aaron works out, maybe we can actually be safe for once." The idea was something I'd never given much thought to over the time we'd been living in this world, even with the prison once being our secure home. I'd never been able to actually calm myself enough to enjoy the moment of being alive but now here we were, still breathing, still fighting and hopefully this community would be a real thing and we could actually build a life for ourselves; Daryl and I could build a life.

It wasn't long before the others returned, bags filled with cans of food that were now thrown across a table at the back of the barn; all of us standing around as Rick inspected it.

"All of this is ours now."

"There's more than enough." Aaron nodded at Ricks' words.

"It's ours, whether or not we go to your camp." Ricks' authority was coming through with every word he spoke. This world was doing crazy things to everyone but Rick? Rick had had enough by now and even though I knew he was a good person, I knew what he was capable of doing to keep us and the rest of his family safe.

"Why wouldn't we go?" Carl stepped up from beside me.

"Rick, if he wanted to kill us or ambush us, he would have. We need this." I finally spoke up, everyone's attention suddenly on me. I wasn't usually the one to speak up about things like this, but this community gave us a chance to actually start living a life again; I wasn't about to pass up that opportunity.

"All of us are going," Michonne interjected, casting glances around the entire group. "Somebody speak up now if they feel differently." No one spoke and a silence fell upon the group.

Rick nodded and instructed us to eat and get some sleep; we were going to be leaving at sundown to make our way there.

I grabbed a can of beans and opened it easily with my knife. Baked beans when they were cold was no my favourite thing in the world but it was better than eating crushed up nuts and berries so I quickly dug in, eating the entire can before it barely touched the sides.

Daryl and a few of the other people in our group were on the other side of the barn catching some much needed sleep before we would be leaving.

"Annora," Gabriel sat down beside me in the dirt, his knees pulled up to his chest as he leaned against the barn beside me. "You seem troubled."

"I'm fine, really. Daryl and I have been through a lot it's just nice to get some food and see him actually sleep for once." He nodded in understanding, not pushing it much further.

It was no secret to anyone that Daryl and I had had our issues, even to those who we didn't know that well, but here we were, still going and even though I didn't know how long his nap would last, he looked peaceful at least for a few short moments of time.

It was late at night when we finally left, all of us in the back seat of the RV that was parked out the front apart from Rick, Michonne and Glenn who were in a car in front of us with Aaron.

Everyone sat in silence as Abraham drove, the lights of the car in front of us pulling further away as Glenn was a little trigger happy with the gas pedal.

Then the brake lights hit and the walker snarls grew louder. Abraham pulled off the road we were on and we wound up along route 16 anyway, specifically where Rick didn't want us to go but we had no other choice, the walkers that were in front of us would have hauled us up and we would have had to leave on foot.

Up ahead, walkers were surrounding a vehicle, something they only did when there was live fresh meat waiting for them.

"Annora stay in here." Daryl instructed as he, Maggie, Rosita and a few others got out, killing the walkers in front of them, clearing the car. I on the other hand decided that for once I was going to ignore him, stepping out of the RV into the cold night and moved towards the car, a man was trapped underneath the left back wheel with his ankle trapped beneath the rubber.

"If you guys lift the car we can drag him out." I told them, running over and pointing to the car, ignoring the look Daryl gave me. They did as I told them and despite the small pain in my chest coming back to me, I managed to grab hold of one of the mans arms, Carol grabbing hold of the other one and the two of us managed to drag him back to the RV.

"What's your name?" Carol asked, letting go of his arms as Maggie examined his leg.

"I'm Eric, I was with Aaron but a pack of roamers came out of no where and pushed that car on top of me." He managed to explain through grit teeth.

"We're gonna have to haul up somewhere, you got a flare?" Daryl nodded his head to Eric who was trying not to yell with the pain he was feeling in his leg. He nodded and pulled a flare gun from his pocket, handing it to Daryl's out stretched hand.

"There's a water tower over there, we can haul up there until Rick and that find us." Carol nodded her head in the direction of a silhouette of a water tower, allowing Daryl and Abraham to heave Eric to his one good foot and damn near tossed him in the back of the RV, all of us making our way over there.

"It's a simple break, once we can get a splint on it, it should stop most of the pain." Maggie sent Eric a small smile and kept a hand on his ankle, probably to keep it from moving too much as the RV jostled around on the uneven path as we pulled into the back of the water tower, a door to a building at the bottom was something that was perfect for us to keep out of sight in.

Daryl and Abraham went first, quickly clearing the place of walkers before helping Eric into the room.

"I'll use the gun, hopefully Rick'll see it. I'll wait out the back for them." Daryl kissed the top of my head before he left, the sound of the flare igniting being heard from the other side of the door.

"Annora, I need your shirt." Maggie pointed to the plaid overshirt I was wearing, needing it to tie a piece of wood to Eric's ankle as a kind of make shift splint.

"Thank you." Eric smiled at Maggie as she finished bandaging him up, all of us introducing ourselves as we waited for Rick to arrive.

It was going to be a long ass night and all I wanted to do was find a small room to hide in and try and get some sleep, but I was too worried about the others to be able to do that.

Luckily I didn't have to wait long, Daryl had knocked on the door and everyone had rushed outside, Rick and the others being engulfed in hugs.

Not that I was surprised, with the amount of walkers there were when we managed to turn off the road, there was no way of knowing if they were going to be okay and I was so glad they were.

All of us were left in a dark room to ourselves whilst Aaron and Eric were in the main room, finally catching up after the incident with the ankle.

Daryl and I stood off to the side, my hand laced with Daryl's as we stood, looking up as Aaron came back into the room to thank us all for helping Eric.

We were going to be leaving in the morning for their community, Alexandria, as Aaron called it. All I cared about at that moment was catching some well earned rest but this was it, we were actually going to be going to this community and I couldn't wait. To finally be able to have walls around us that were safe from walkers so we weren't looking over our shoulders every five minutes. It was going to be a god send.
