《Whodunnit 2》Chapter 29 - The Maze (Part 1)

The location the killer set was something not many of the guests dared to explore. The thought of getting trapped inside it was something that scared each of the guests to death. Plus, the fact that this 'challenge' was during the night made the setting even more bone-chilling.

The garden maze took up nearly a quarter of the island. The stunning shrubbery was about eight-foot tall the whole way around, with several twists and turns and dead ends within the entire structure. If a guest was to get stuck in the maze (As Colton and Mike did on day one), the only way you could get help was by ringing one of the emergency bells which were scattered around the maze. That would alert staff, who would find you.

"As you can all see, the killer has set up a show for this final four challenge. There are four entrances for this maze, you will all be each randomly selected to a certain entrance. The killer has made me aware that your goal is to play hide and seek..."

"Seriously?" Chantal puffed, crossing her arms at the seemingly vague description of how to stay alive.

"All in good time, Miss Jennings" Giles politely reminded the singer that interrupting the killer's instructions wasn't a good call.

The butler cleared his throat and started again. "The killer has made me aware that your goal is to play hide and seek to stay alive. Sophie & May, one hour ago were instructed to place a single pistol somewhere inside the maze. The killer already has ammunition on their person. The killer suggests you hide well because if you are found, you will be killed off. The killer has allowed you all to say your goodbyes since one of you will not be leaving this maze alive. Good luck, guests."

The final four stood in shock for a few moments after Giles read the brief of what would be happening. Three of the innocent guests were trying hard not to imagine themselves being shot to death. It was a cause of death that the three guests could not physically prepare for, the force of a bullet ripping through their flesh was something that they couldn't tell would be extremely painful or merely quick and painless.

Netherless, the four all eventually said their goodbyes to each other.

Grace & Cecilia embraced in a long hug. The two friends had become very close throughout the game and both would be heartbroken if this really was the last goodbye. However, deep down in their hearts they had an inkling that they would be safe inside the garden maze.

Brett & Chantal embraced in a long kiss. The couple finally shared an intimate moment while out in the public, and they each felt it was a pleasurable kiss. Everyone else disagreed, Cecilia, pulled a disgusted facial expression, Grace cringed, while even Giles and the maids turned their heads away from the direction of the couple.

When each couple split apart to say their separate goodbyes, they were mostly quick yet graceful goodbyes. Each of them was more focused on staying alive, as the game was almost over and their chances of survival were rapidly increasing.

They were then each personally escorted by the maids to their specific entrance to the maze.

Cecilia was taken first by Sophie. The two walked in silence as Sophie led the single mother to the furthest entrance from the place each of them was standing just minutes before. To take her mind off the impending challenge, the Cuban woman chose to look around at her surroundings. It was astonishing to her that even though she was on a beautiful island surrounded by luxurious palm trees and all-inclusive luxuries, the game always took the president. She had been so wrapped up in the stress of the experiment that she had never really taken in where she was. As she walked further, she took in the views of the calm waves against the sandy beach, the dim lights of the main resort building and even passed the morgue shed. But, before she could take in any more sights, she had arrived at the entrance.

"Please wait here until you hear the bell ring. Once the bell has rung you may enter the maze." Sophie spoke in a low voice before walking away and disappearing into the darkness, leaving Cecilia alone.

Chantal was next. She was taken by May and the two also strolled in silence. She also watched the calm waves crash against the shore while she tried to take her mind off the challenge. She found it ironic how calm the waves were, knowing that just meters from the waves pure insanity was soon to arise. She also wondered if anybody on the outside world had any idea about what was happening on the tiny island, she knew it was only a few more days until the original 'vacation' was meant to be over, she knew that family members of the guests would soon report that something was wrong to the police when they didn't return. The singer was hoping in the back of her mind that someone in the outside world would somehow realise the twisted game was happening and alert the authorities. But for now, she knew she just had to survive this challenge and she could be the guest who would walk away from the island with their life intact.

Brett was third to be shown an entrance. The singer was just focused on surviving. He knew that he couldn't protect Chantal anymore due to the nature of the challenge, so he had to look out for himself. The twenty-five-year-old knew he just had to avoid Grace and Cecilia. He had thought most of the game that Grace was the killer, but recently he was swayed to thinking that Cecilia was, in fact, the sinner. It made sense in his mind that Cecilia could very well be the killer since she's pretty much been invisible. The two had hardly spoken the entire game and no one had hardly suspected her to be the killer the whole game, he thought it might have been the 'single mother stereotype' which made people think there was no way the Cuban could have been the killer. Sophie left Brett at his entrance and after a while, the fear started to set in for the only male left in the game. He knew this could be his last few minutes alive.

Grace was taken to her entrance last. The suicide of Kendra had already left her upset but once she was left at her individual entrance, she broke down. The author hadn't even stepped foot inside the maze at this point, but she felt like the walls were closing in on her. The author had always had a small fear of the dark, and this challenge which was now in pitch black had definitely heightened the fear. She was terrified of running into one particular person, Brett. She had suspected him since Troy was killed off. It kept replaying in her mind that the muscular guest would catch her off guard and there would be the tense moment of silence before the trigger is pulled and she would be killed off. She knew she needed to hide for her life, otherwise her visions could possibly come true.

Eventually, the estate bell rang throughout the entire island, and the challenge was officially on.

Once again, the four all stood still to begin with. There was something so terrifying about the maze in the pitch black, that almost made them want to run away like little kids back to the safety of the indoors. But they knew they couldn't do that. They had to play this out, and one of them wasn't going to return.

Chantal was the last to officially enter the maze, her slim frame disintegrated into the darkness as she entered the abyss.

The game was on.
