《Darkest Hero》sports festival part 4

The crowd held their breath as the students rushed into various entry points along the outer wall of the multi story maze and the main display monitor above the stadium started showing various views of inside the maze. Several robots armed with a neon orange barrel and hopper patrolled the halls and rooms with a feint mechanical whirring sound as they went along. Lilith herself was simply walking through the halls with a sway in her hips and what could only be described as a paintball minigun in her hands.
"Now a little fact about those robots everybody!" Midnight called loudly with a sadistic smirk aimed towards the maze. "They're designed to withstand even a blow from a speeding dump truck which for those who don't know means that the students shouldn't be able to destroy them, that's right this is a pure stealth exorcise!"
The first to actually encounter a robot was Setsuna. The greenette lizard splitter quirk user had scattered her body parts bar her legs and torso which hid behind the corner. The floating limbs proceeded to distract the robot long enough for her body to sneak past and duck into the next room.
A loud buzzer sound echoed through the stadium as one of the monitor views became larger than the others and showed Toru yelping in pain as she was pelted with paintballs displaying her face and left hand in neon colours.
"Ooh! And looks like Hagakure is out folks!" Present Mic called out. "Those robots were outfitted with thermal imagery, sonar and night vision and despite being invisible Hagakure still gave off heat."
"It's illogical to expect invisibility to hold up under more than just visible light spectrums." Aizawa droned on with a sigh. "Anybody who gets hit please stay still while Cementos gets you out."
Toru let loose a squeak of shock as the floor bellow her opened up into a slide and she was shot out of the maze and onto a waiting sponge mat where Cementos handed her a wet cloth to wipe off the paint.
Inside the maze itself Izuku gulped nervously as he snuck past a patrolling robot and into a small crawl space. It was cramped and dark but it was better than the open halls. As he crawled through he tried not to make any noise. Two more buzzes sounded announcing that Tsuyu and a name he didn't catch due to the whirring of the robots motor had been eliminated.
It was then that a loud grinding sound saw the maze around him warp and change. No longer was he in a vent but instead he was in a room with no way in or out and a small stone chair in the middle.
"" Present Mic laughed as Bakugo's screams of rage were heard a few floors above him.
Izuku sighed as he sat down in the chair for a few moments and took stock of the room around him. It was frankly rather bland and for some reason reminded him of those prison cells they stick psychopaths in on TV shows. As he waited for the room to shift once more his mind briefly wondered onto the topic of Nezu's plan for revealing the supernatural and what exactly that would mean for him, his family and his friends. He hadn't known Eri for long and asides her zeal for torturing the Yakuza she was a sweet girl and didn't deserve to be shunned for what she was.
Soon the sound of grinding cement filled the air once more as the maze shifted and one of the walls melted away to reveal a empty passage way right as two more buzzers sounded.

"" Present Mic called loudly. Izuku gulped nervously as he stepped out into the halls, atleast he hadn't come across any more robots since the first one.
Soon he found himself climbing up some stairs and onto the second level where a room with three doorways waited. The left one lead to a simple room with no other visible doors or vents, the middle went back down onto the first floor and the third on the right went straight for a few metres before turning into a T junction. Sighing he made his way to the right and straight into Charlie.
"Eep!" The blonde squeaked as she froze in shock. Behind her Shishida and Kendo dropped into fighting stances only to relax when they realised it was Izuku.
"Do we fight?" Kendo asked uncertainly.
"Well I don't think so?" Charlie replied. "I think we just have to avoid the robots and mum."
"Your mother is frankly rather scary." Shishida deadpanned as he adjusted his glasses. "We should continue forth, staying still too long is tactically unsound."
"Go right, other two are dead ends." Izuku advised with a smile.
"Right. Hope you make it izu." Charlie smiled as she gave Izuku a quick hug and hurried off with Shishida and Kendo.
He soon continued on, taking the opposite path to where Charlie had come from and found himself in another room, this one overlooking a small hole where a robot was patrolling bellow. The sound of another Buzz and announcment that one Nirekgeki Shoda had been eliminated echoed through the maze as he cautiously snuck past the hole. Down bellow the robot beeped twice and started firing down a tunnel followed by shouts of anger and explosions as a large shockwave of fire and smoke sent the paintballs flying back and the robot tumbling over.
"Atleast Bakugo is having fun." Izuku sighed as the blonde bomber shot past the robot without checking any route other than forwards only to immediately scream in anger and shoot back into the room and try another doorway. All the while the robot which was upsidedown uselessly tried to move its legs in the air.
Another grinding sound filled the air as once more the maze changed and Izuku found himself being lifted up several levels into a new room. This one having two hallways attached to it.
"" Present Mic cackled.
Izuku sighed as he made his way down one path and found that the ceiling was missing along several stretches and searchlights from several robots stationed above swept through the gaps. Of course Nezu had the damned things programmed to follow video game cliches so not only were the lights red but the pattern was insanely easy to notice even if it would be difficult to get past.
Izuku blinked and about faced, heading for the other path, no way was he quick enough to get through that hallway.
As he followed through the twisting route a few more buzzers sounded signalling the loss of Sato and Reiko soon after. The sound of a robot ahead and to the left at the fork in the halls made Izuku turn right and pass by a grated vent only to freeze as Lilith walked right past him, her heels clacking loudly on the stone floor.
"Gotcha!" Lilith cackled as the sound of pained yelps and the whirring of a minigun filled the air. Several buzzer sounds echoed through the building.
"" Present Mic called loudly. ""
Soon the maze was shifting once more, flattening itself as layers merged seamlessly into one another without causing anybody harm until the remaining 20 students and Lilith stood on the raised cement platform that made up the main stage. Midnight grinned as she walked over, microphone in hand.

"There we have it folks out top 20 students going into the finale!" Midnight called as the display screen above the stadium changed to reflect the 20 students who would be passing onto the finals. Izuku, Charlie, ochako, Momo, Mina, Jirou, tetsutetsu, Shoto, Bakugo, shinso, mei, Gura, Jurota, Ibara, Pony, Setsuna, Juzo, Kendo, Shoji and finally Manga. "We'll be taking a quick 15 minute break to set up the arena and allow the students to prepare before they dazzle us all with their youthful displays!"
With that the R rated hero shooed the students off to the waiting area with Lilith trailing behind them, the paintball gun slung over her shoulder as she walked. Izuku and those who also had near brushes with the woman tried to steer clear of her as they made their way back to their respective waiting area with Gura tagging along with Pony into 1B's area since both girls were happily chatting in english.
"You all did good, especially you Juzo you actually managed to give me the slip." Lilith laughed as she placed the gun on a bench at the edge of the arena. "Charlie, Izuku and Momo, good luck you three I sadly can't stay long, they wanted me off the field by the end of the event so I'll be up in the stands."
"But what about your work?" Charlie asked in concern. "Won't that create a backlog?"
Lilith laughed softly as she shook her head. "No dear, Vox managed to break that antique vase from the Ottoman Empire we keep in the front lounge so he's dealing with all the paperwork for the next decade to pay it off."
Izuku shuddered fearfully. Even with help from Vaggie and occasionally Nifty, the paperwork for the hotel alone was a right nightmare, he couldn't even begin to imagine what kind of paperwork hell results from running not only hell but her chain of beauty salons, not to mention the Casino she also had split ownership on. Seeing the concerned looks he had gotten from those present he gave a nervous smile.
"I'm imagining the kind of work that'd be." Izuku explained. "Even weekly paperwork for Charlie's hotel was a nightmare."
"But it's all worth it." Charlie replied with a grin. "Just imagine all the people we helped!"
"Charlie sweety, so far your hotel has 4 residents and one of them is Alister." Lilith deadpanned.
"Uh, I'm gonna regret this but who is Alister?" Setsuna asked. "Like the devil himself Alister or like the American villain who got killed last year Alister?"
"The radio and deal demon Alister." Charlie replied with a shrug. "He's no so much a client as someone who wants to see the hotel flourish so he can laugh at people."
"Such filth that you deal with demons." Neito scoffed dismissively.
"Need I remind you I'm a demon too?" Ibara deadpanned at neito as she wrapped him up in her vines. "Sit down, shut up and we won't have to tie you to the flagpole again."
"I REFUSE!" Neito snapped.
"Tie him up after the festival. You all need to be preparing for the next round after all. See you all soon." Lilith smiled politely before she made her way over to the parent section of the stands where Inko, Mitsuki, Beru, Toga and Eri were waiting.
"Lilith! How have you been?" Inko smiled happily to the silver haired demon.
"Busy as always. Vox shot up the living room again so he's doing the paperwork for the next decade to pay off the damages." Lilith smiled back before she noticed Eri and Toga. "Oh, who are these two?"
"My adopted daughter Eri and my future daughter in law Toga." Inko explained as she gestured to the two girls.
"Hi!" Eri chirped. "I like your necklace, it's pretty!"
"Charlie's mum?" Toga replied.
"Yes and thankyou." Lilith smiled as she glanced down at her raven skull necklace. "I like your one too."
"It's a pleasure to meet you Kero. I'm Beru Asui." The frog quirked woman smiled politely.
"Yo I'm Mitsuki Bakugo, should of nailed my kid in the face with the paintballs in my opinion, he's too cocky for his own good." Mitsuki snorted with a smirk on her face.
"I've certainly heard about your son's attitude but I'm more the revenge served by those wronged type person." Lilith waved it off. "Mind you if he touches a single hair on either of my girls heads then I personally will sue his ass to Tartarus and back."
"If he starts with discrimination give me a call Kero." Beru stated as she handed lilith a business card with her number on it. "From what I've seen it's a wonder he is still in the school at all."
"From what I've been told it's meddling on Inko's part." Mitsuki snorted.
"Don't look at me, I gave him one chance and he blew it. It's the HSC that's keeping him here not me." Inko stated with her hands raised to shoulder height.
"Do I need to remind you both I'm a lawyer and under law have to report this kind of thing kero?" Beru sighed.
"Oh nothing illegal on our end my dear." Lilith waved it off. "The HSC on the other hand from what we've been told has threatened assassination and hostile takeover to the principal aswell as illegally cutting funding and blacklisting individuals from this school."
"I see." Beru croaked as she started to rummage through her bag before pulling out a pen and paper which she proceeded to write on. "I'd recommend this firm, the woman who runs it is older than I am, something about Axalotyls for a quirk or something but she is probably the best at dealing with this...even if she is weird kero."
Inko merely accepted the paper with a promise to hand it on to Nezu. She snorted a laugh. "Oh this is too good. Give him a run for his money."
On the slip, written just bellow the number was the firm name and the name of the lead lawyer. Mystery Duo Law firm, Mable and Dipper Pines.
Down bellow in the tunnels under the stands however one individual was sneaking around, a red mask over their noseless face and a pair of knives strapped to his wrists.
"Damned dear angel piece of crap fake. They were supposed to of gotten into the maze for the ritual." They growled as they glared out of a gap in the seats above them. "It's up to me to rid this world of the fake heroes. The blonde ones should do just fine."

The Edge of Endless
Due to some unforseen and significant life events, this story will be on hiatus for a time. Reborn into a strange but familiar world, Alex makes it his mission to uncover the mysteries of governments, gods, and the arcane realm known only (and inaccurately) as the Unending Depths. Slowly but surely, he grows in ability and meets new and interesting people. tEoE is an epic fantasy LitRPG with a focus on plot, writing, and hopefully original twists on the standard formula of 'MC picks cool class, levels up'. Give it a read if any of the following appeals to you: > 3000-5000 words per chapter, chapters released at least once per week, usually several times. Expect good grammar. > Story focus on illusions, secrets, and traps (along with the usual combat and character stuff). > Progression fantasy, but one where progress is meant to feel earned, moderately paced, and reasonable. Some advantages, but not big, unfair ones. > If a random reader can work out that putting a big rock in a bag of holding, lifting it, and then dropping the rock is free energy, then so could an adventurer who's owned a bag of holding for twenty years. Side characters have brains too. > Blue boxes! Levels! [Classes]! [Skills]! Loot! > No uncomfortable sexist undertones. Ambivalent about including relationships. Definitely no harems. There are a number of arcs planned and this will be ongoing for some time. I am very appreciative of the kind reviews and comments left so far.
