《I Owe You Some Champagne (Usnavi x Reader)》The Party

What you expected yourself to look like after the makeover and what you actually looked like were two completely different things.

You imagined that you would end up looking like someone in a cartoon after someone would squeal "makeover!"- lots of horribly done makeup, hair in some bad, frizzy style, and bright, over the top clothes.

But, surprisingly, you thought you looked... pretty. Turns out, Daniela and Carla were more experienced than you thought.

This is what you were wearing, and you actually liked it:

Now you were just hoping Usnavi would too.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An hour later, you were nervously walking down the street to the hill where the party was being held. It had a really pretty view of the river, and was a perfect spot to launch and see fireworks.
The closer you got, the bigger the knot in your stomach grew. What if you were dressed too nice? What if you get there, and Usnavi is kissing Vanessa? What if Vanessa gets mad if you do anything romantic with Usnavi?
A million "what ifs" continued to run through your mind until Benny walks over to you.
"Wow, Y/N, you look really nice," he says as you open the gate to get to the hill.
"Thanks, Benny."
"Is it for a special someone?", he asks, wiggling his eyebrows.
"Shut up," you say, hitting his arm, and he laughs. You both start walking up the slope.
"So, are you going to try and ask him out again?", Benny asks.
"Daniella and Carla said I should, but what about Vanessa? She's my friend, and she and Usnavi might be dating."
"Why don't you just ask her if she is?"
You slowly nod. "Okay. I will."
"Good. Now I am going to try and win Nina over."
"Go get her."
You both smile, then separate. You walk around, scanning for Vanessa, and finally see her by the food table, drinking punch.
You walk over to her nervously, not sure if she was holding any sort of grudge over you about the whole falling-on-top-of-Usnavi thing. But she just smiles when she sees you.
"Y/N! Glad that you could make it."
You smile back, relived. "Thanks. Me too." You gather up your courage. "Um, can I ask you a question?"
She raises an eyebrow. "Sure."
"Are you dating Usnavi?"
Vanessa pauses for a moment. "No. We went on a date, but I don't think that counts as dating."
"Well, do you like him?"
"I don't know. He's a nice guy, kinda shy though. Why?"
You shrug, trying to act nonchalant. "Just wondering."
You two talk for a while, and you scan the crowd. There aren't very many people you didn't know. Almost the whole neighborhood is here. You see Daniella and Carla, Graffiti Pete, Benny and Nina, Mr. and Mrs. Rosario- and then you finally see him. Usnavi is talking to Sonny, and they're both standing by the fireworks.
He suddenly looks over and you lock eyes. You noticed his mouth part slightly as he quickly looks you up and down.
You feel a small amount of heat rise to your cheeks. You would have to thank Daniella and Carla a million more times later.
You tune into what Vanessa was saying again. "...Seriously, all people do is talk about gossip going around in the barrio in the salon. It's like they don't know how to talk about anything else." She suddenly notices something. "Oh, I forgot, I need to talk to Daniella and Carla about getting a day off next week." She turns to you. "Sorry."
"No, it's okay. I'll talk to you later."
She nods, and then walks away, leaving you alone.
Not able to help yourself, you glance over at where Usnavi was standing, but it was just Sonny.
You look around. Where did he go? Did he leave? Did he go back to his bodega to work? Did he get bored and just bail? Oh no. What if he's-
"Y/N."
You turn and see Usnavi, smiling at you with his amazing, sunshine-y smile.
"Usnavi," you reply, grinning.
"It- it's good to see you," he says a bit shyly.
"You too," you reply happily. Usnavi was talking to you! And he was the one who started the conversation!
"Did I mention that you look great tonight? Because you do you really-"
"Thank you," you interrupt. You hope that he will loosen up a bit as the night goes on. Once Usnavi overcomes his nervousness around people, he is the best person to talk to. "You do too."
He laughs, a sound that fills you up inside. "This is what I wear everyday."
You shrug, then try your hand at flirting. "What I said is still true."
You notice a slight redness creep up his cheeks while the corners of his lips turn up slightly. "Gracias, Y/N."
"De nada."
You both smile.
After a few moments of contented silence, Usnavi says, "How do you feel about a bet?"
You raise an eyebrow. "A bet? About what?"
"I bet that at least one guy will ask you on a date tonight," Usnavi said.
Your heart sinks. That means Usnavi isn't going to. That means you can't really ask Usnavi on a date. "I don't know..."
"C'mon, Y/N, it'll be fun."
You sigh. "Fine." Then you mutter, "It doesn't really sound fun..."
"What?"
"Um, if you win the bet, what'll you get?", you ask.
"How about..." Usnavi pauses to think for a moment, and you almost sigh again. It really seems like you'll never get together at this point. "I get to give you two coffees on the house."
Usnavi knows that you hated it when he tries to give you free coffee, especially since you go there all the time. His bodega wouldn't make any money if he just kept giving you free stuff. "Usnavi..."
"It's what I want," he says as firmly as he can.
"Fine," you say again. "Then if I win, which I will, I want..." As you look around, Usnavi takes off his hat, runs a hand through his hair, then sticks it back on. You had never seem him without his hat on. He looked really handsome, even though you only saw him without it for a split second.
"Y/N?" Usnavi was looking at you.
You realize you had been staring, and heat rushes up to your cheeks. Your mind suddenly goes back to the club, when you had been watching Usnavi dance with Vanessa- and the two glasses on champagne you had. "Um, I want champagne."
"Champagne?"
"Yep. Just a nice bottle of champagne." What you really wanted was for him to go on a date with you, or for him to go a day without wearing his hat. But for both of them, you would be forcing him to do something that he didn't want to do, and you didn't want to do that to Usnavi.
He smiled, and stuck out his hand. "Deal."
You shook his hand, and tingles exploded through your palm. "Deal."
Throughout the night, you talked to a lot of different people, but couldn't steer your mind away from Usnavi.
Once fireworks stared lighting up the night sky, you decided to go to him. Who knows? Maybe you'd have another romantic moment like a few days ago- only this time, hopefully Sonny wouldn't ruin it.
It's the perfect romantic scene, after all. A beautiful starry sky lit up by colorful fireworks, a perfectly green grass hill, a gentle breeze, and a lot of bright (but not too bright) white Christmas lights on trees and fences.
You find him sitting alone, staring up at the fireworks in awe.
"Can I sit?", you ask.
Usnavi looks up at you, and before he can say anything, the street lights and all of the lights that were hung up for the party flicker and go out.
You knew the power couldn't have lasted long after the three-minute blackout.
"Oye que paso!", you hear the piragua guy ask. For some reason, no one really knows his name.
"Blackout! Blackout!", Usnavi yells, then you hear movement, and you guess that he stood up.
"Again?", you hear a few people moan.
"Vino el apagon ay dios!", piragua guy exclaims.
With everyone distracted by the power going out, no one was lighting fireworks, and that made it almost pitch black outside.
You decide that you wanted to just go home and wait out the blackout with some ice cream. You carefully make your way to the gate, bumping into a few people along the way.
Your eyes adjusted a little to the darkness, and you could vaguely see the outline of the gate.
You grab onto it and push, but it won't open. A figure stands next to you and also tries to push it.
You squint at the person. "Benny?"
"Y/N!", he exclaims. "Somebody better open this goshdang gate!"
"I know!" You both continue trying to push it open. You try pulling it, even though it didn't open that way.
You begin to get frustrated. You just wanted to go home. "Somebody better open this goshdang gate!", you yell, mimicking Benny's words.
After one more push, you give up. It was just high enough so that you couldn't step over it. And you were actually wearing nice clothes, so you couldn't just climb it.
You hear, "Chill, for real, or we're gonna get killed!" over the chaos. That sounded like Usnavi! You needed to find Usnavi! Maybe he could help you.
You try but without success to make your way through the crowd. Honestly, it's possible you passed by him at some point, but how were you supposed to tell? You did not plan this out very well.
"And I can't find Usnavi!", you exclaim.
"Nina, where'd you go?", you hear Benny ask. You guessed he gave up on the gate, too.
Then, Sonny's voice joins the havoc. "What's going on? What's going on? Suddenly I find the electricity is gone."
"Y/N!"
That was Usnavi's voice. Usnavi was trying to find you!
You try to follow the sound of his voice, and decide to go along the fence so that you run into less people.
Suddenly, you're pulled back.
You turn around and see that part of your dress got caught.
You tug on it, but it won't come loose. "Usnavi help me!", you say.
"Y/N!", Usnavi yells again.
"Usnavi help me!", you repeat, just in case he hadn't heard you.
"I gotta go...", he says, quieter than last time.
What? He needs to go?
You look around and see a figure wearing a very cute hat make his way through the crowd, climb over the gate, then hurry away.
"You left me alone!", you yell after him, angry. He knew you needed help. He knew you were there alone. Why did he leave?
"We are powerless! We are powerless!"
Yeah, no kidding, Sonny.
Your anger gives you more adrenaline, and you use that to do one last hard tug on your dress. You hear a rip, then you come free.
Dread and guilt fills you. That was Daniella's dress that you borrowed- and you ruined it.
You see Sonny and Graffiti Pete leave, then soon after, across the river, fireworks shoot into the dark sky.
"Look at the fireworks!", a lot of people exclaim, probably glad that it wasn't pitch black anymore.
Then, Daniella starts saying things in Spanish (something like "wake up abuela, I was dancing"...but you couldn't be totally sure over the noise) at the same time Carla starts talking about how crazy the crowd is.
You seriously had no idea where anyone was. There was just a lot of talking, yelling, shoving, and fireworks.
Benny. Benny could help you.
You hear his voice, and push your way through the crowd towards him.
A firework erupts in the sky, and you see that he's talking to Nina.
"Nina, there you are," he says, relived.
"I've gotta go."
"I'll get you out of here tonight."
"I don't need anything tonight." Hey! You really wanted to go over there and tell her that she was ruining her chances at love, but chose to stay out of it. "I'll find my home-"
"Find your way home-"
"Without you!"
"Without you!"
"Look at the fireworks!", more of the crowd said in awe.
"They light up the night sky-"
Someone interrupted the person. "Light up the night sky-"
"In Washington Heights!", they exclaimed together.
You look over just in time to see Benny and Nina kiss.
Well, this night was about 1000% more dramatic and crazy than you thought it was going to be.
A/N: Sorry about the bad chapter and picture. I wasn't sure what else to do for it. Also, sorry this chapter took forever!
