Your hands gripped your steering wheel tightly as you drove down the road, your heart beating loudly and adrenaline coursing through your body.

Were you really going to do this? Finally tell Lin that you couldn't take it anymore and ask him out? What if he said no? He wouldn't, right? Didn't he still have feelings for you? But what if he changed his mind?

A million thoughts and questions ran through your mind as the minutes ticked by slowly, until you pulled into his apartment's parking lot, your mind fuzzy and your senses on autopilot.

You entered the code for his building and walked into the elevator, anxiety squeezing your chest. Your adrenaline had mostly won off as you became more and more nervous about what was about to happen.

The door opened a few seconds later, and you walked down the hall to Lin's apartment.

You shook out your hands, took a deep breath, then knocked.

You realized that there had been raised voices inside that stopped as soon as you knocked.

After a moment, the door opened, and a distressed looking Lin appeared. A bit of relief washed over his face when he saw you. "Y/N."

"Hey." You tried to look past him. "Can I come in?"

"Um." He glanced over his shoulder. "I'm not sure if now is the best time."

"Oh." All the energy you had left your body, and was replaced with disappointment. "Okay. Is everything alright?"

"Uh, yeah, I just-"

"Lin, who is it?" A voice demanded, and the door swung open to reveal-

"Evy," you said in surprise. "What're you doing here?"

She smirked slightly, and you took in Lin's messy hair and rumpled clothes the fact that his lips looked more red than usual.

Hurt filled you so quickly that you lost your breath for a moment. You tried to be angry, but came up empty. You opened your moth to speak, but nothing came out. You had no idea what to say, what to do.

Lin must've been able to tell that you connected the dots, because desperation filled his expression. "Y/N, it's not what you think, really, we were just-"

"Kissing." Evy looked so smug, so satisfied with herself. She pinned herself to Lin's side, resting her head on his shoulder. "Isn't that right, Lin?" She kept her dark eyes locked on you.

You wanted to run away, but you were frozen to the spot. Your throat became tight, and you bit down on your tongue hard to stop yourself from crying in front of them.

"Yes, but I wasn't- I didn't mean- she kissed me, I tried to pull away-"

"Excuses, excuses." Evy waved her hand around, then walked in front of you, her smirk never wavering. "So how does it feel? To have someone who was supposed to be there for you, be like your sister, to kiss the man you love?" She shook her head, her grin finally falling, but into a scowl. "That's what you did to me, and you thought I would just forgive you? I loved Lin. How could you do that to me?" She blinked away tears, her glare piercing your soul. "If I did that to you, you wouldn't just move on as if it never happened. You would want me to feel what you had to. And that's what I'm doing." She reached over and threaded her fingers through Lin's. "We're getting back together. And I never want to see you again."

You had expected yourself to break down, to be overcome with guilt and to start sobbing, begging for forgiveness and her friendship back, but you were suddenly filled with what you had been missing- anger. "You're wrong." Your voice shook with emotion. "If you hurt me the way I hurt you, I wouldn't want you to feel it. I would never make you go through what I did. Because I care about you, and would never, ever want to hurt you." The words came rushing out of you, and you felt relief as you set them free. "You've never been a good friend to me. You've been toxic since junior high, but ignored it because I needed a friend. That doesn't justify what I did, but it does give me the freedom to let you go, and to not feel guilty about it, like you always made me feel." You kept your eyes locked on hers as she worked to keep a neutral expression. "Bye, Evy. I hope you're happy." Not daring to look at Lin, you turned and hurried back down the hallway, taking the stairs down instead of the elevator.

You got to the bottom, your head spinning and your heart beating out of control. You felt light, like you finally gotten rid of a burden that had been on you for years. She couldn't hurt you anymore.

Just as you got to your car door, you heard, "Y/N!"

You turned, and were surprised to see Lin. "Lin?"

He arrived at your side, slightly out of breath. "Well- first of all, are you okay?"

You hesitated, trying to assess yourself. "Yeah. I'm okay."

"Okay, good." Lin smoothed down his long hair. "I just wanted to tell you, although it probably doesn't mean anything to you, that Evy and I aren't back together. She just came to my apartment and kissed me, and I pulled away then we got into an argument, and that's when you showed up. I don't have any feelings for her or anything."

It took you a moment to process everything he said. "You aren't dating?"

He shook his head. "Nope. Not even Evy could force me to date her."

You chuckled slightly, then racked your brain for the right words. Just as you were about to say something, Lin said, "Um, I just wanted to let you know that I still have feelings for you, and was wondering if you might want to go out sometime, now that everything with Evy is over." He seemed so nervous and shy that it made him look even more cute.

"I'd like that," you said with a barely contained smile.

Lin's eyes flashed up to meet yours. "Really?"

Your smile grew, and you chuckled. "Yeah. I really like you. Of course I want to go out with you."

A grin spread across Lin's face, and you leaned in and pressed a quick but sweet kiss to his lips.

You pulled away, and both of you stood there, grinning like idiots until-

"What the hell?!" Evy came storming out of the building, positively fuming. She stomped over to you. "Are you two seriously together? After everything that's happened? How could you do that? I was supposed to be your best friend, and you hurt me. I was supposed to be your fiancée, and you hurt me. Why am I always the victim of your little mind games? When will you realize that other people exist too, people with feelings-"

"Evy."

She turned her scalding gaze to you. "What?"

You met her fury with a steady gaze. "Kiss my ass."

As she stood there, unsure what to say but most definitely ramping up to another long speech, you grabbed Lin's hand and kissed him on the cheek. "Wanna get out of here?"

"Please."

You both got into your car and drove away, leaving everything behind but you and Lin.
