《In The Shadows (Star Trek TOS/AOS)》Part 14

A couple weeks later they were driving through the old roads to Riverside. They'd stopped in an American equivalent of a Tesco Express just outside the home town for Jim to show her there wotsits called Cheetos. She was fascinated by there variety of flavours. "Gwen will you do me a favour?" "Depends on what it is?" "When we pay I don't want to sound horrible but not many people around here have heard an accent as thick and unique as yours. Try not to spook them you want avoid he attention, oh no," he said ducking a little, "What is it?" "That woman that just walked in she is an absolute entitled parent with the brats to match, keep low she knows me and I don't want to talk to her." They crept round the shops till it came time to pay thats when she spotted James, "James T Kirk it's been years!" "Hi Crystal yes it has," "And who is this don't leave family in the dark," "Oh I'm Gwynneth," he put his arm around her waist and said, "She's my fiancé," "Oh wow. I remember you when you were still in school," Gwen chuckled saying something in Cornish, "Gwen you know I can't understand you when you talk in your language?" "I know that's the point," "Cheeky." He chuckled as Crystal grew curious, "I'm sorry but we speak English here," "Yeah I know that, only English isn't my first language has never been," "And what is?" "Cornish. Most of my family especially my keugh, henvamm, tas-kuv, mamm-guv, gorewnter, gorvodre especially her she's never as much heard a single word or English," "Your what?" "Never mind lets just say my grandparents, great grandparents and my great aunts and uncles," "Oh okay see you later then."
She locked eyes with James and gave him the look that he understood what he meant about her entitlement. "Okay you ready to meet my parents?" "Ready as I'll ever be," she listened as James shouted for his parents. A great boarder collie went charging towards them, his parents were mortified at the dog charging at this random woman. "Sit stay," she ordered and the dog surprising stopped and laid at her feet, "Now James are you going to keep us in the dark or tell us who this remarkable young woman is," "Oh sorry this is my fiancé Gwynneth," "Dydh da, sorry hello," "No it's fine Gwyn-nee-th?" They made her name sound like it was longer than it was, "Just call me Gwen I've been told my name is difficult to say in these parts," "It took me a while to get it right so I called her by her last name," "Yeah till Bones started making fun of it," "I tried to stop him I swear but it was funny," "How would you like to be called Condom then," "At first I didn't understand it but now it makes total sense Congdon, Condom yeah that makes sense now," "Clever clogs just figured it out." They laughed at his confused parents.
After having lunch with them James took Gwen to see the town. Gwen fitted in better than James in her red flannel shirt and blue denim jeans but the fact no one had seen her before was what made her stick out like a sore thumb. He grabbed her wrist and pulled her down onto a small country road lined with nothing but the woods either side. "Jim where are we going?" "You'll see I want to show you my secret hideout," she cocked an eyebrow struggling to understand and she was the one that talked gibberish. After walking what seemed like forever they rested under a tree and out of nowhere she produced two bottles of lemonade, "How?" "A witch never reveals her secrets. Alohamora," she waved her wand and the two bottles burst open, "Okay that was cool. Why haven't you done your magic around anyone before?" "I don't know I've never been comfortable doing it around people my grandmother taught me and even gave me her wand but I never really wanted to nor had the need to."

She turned to face Kirk to see he wasn't there. She looked round the tree before hearing it, "Up here Gills," she looked up to see him in the tree, "Be careful do not fall," "I won't," he swung upside down to look down at you, "When you fall don't come crying to me," "I won't fa.." his words was cut short to him loosing his grip and slipping, he heard Gwen yell, "Arresto Momentum," but he didn't want to open his eyes. When he finally did he was hovering centimetres off the ground, with an abundant crash he slammed onto the floor. "Your lucky I already had my wand in my hand. Now will you tell me where we are going?" "You'll see." He pulled her further down the road to an old farmhouse.
He stood on the porch and felt along the boarded up frame, "This used to be my grandparents house, me and my friends used my bedroom as our secret hideout," "It's so rundown?" "Yeah my grandparents died almost 10 years ago now, come on," Gwen followed him through the old rooms filled with childhood memories for him. All that came to her head was that song by pop artist Madonna This Used To Be My Playground, very fitting. "This was my grandparents room, my sister and I were born in here," James explained running his fingers along the wooden bed frame all the nicks and scratches were stories in themselves. Gwen found herself drawn to the dresser, she felt the elegant wood carving on the sides till she felt a button. Out of curiosity she pressed it and a draw hit her right in the ribs, "Ow dam you draw," "What did you do.." he spotted the secret compartment she'd just opened and remembered a section of his grandfather's last will, 'The ones that find our wedding rings will be the ones to have them,' it was to saved any arguments. "Help my clear the draw," "Would be nice if I knew what we were looking for," "To late I found it," he pulled out the siamese box and sure enough inside was his grandparents wedding rings, "Oh god I found them," "Found what now I know how you feel," "It's my grandparents wedding rings, they said in a section of his grandfather's last will, 'The ones that find our wedding rings will be the ones to have them,' it was to saved any arguments. And I, we found them so what do you say?" "It's your choice they are your grandparents," "In that case we just found our wedding rings."

Gwen asked about the only door that was shut down the corridor, "Jim what's in there?" "I don't know that used to be my room. I didn't even have a door," those words definitely sent alarm bells ringing as they moved the door aside and out of the way. The room was extremely dark as the windows were covered with something, "Hang on Lumos," she drew her wand so the wand light could illuminate the room, James saw something she didn't and yanked her away from the door, "What the hell?" "Do that again I think I saw something in the closet," "Lumos maxima," this light was brighter and this time they both saw it. Buckets of blood and animal carcusses on the floor. All that they kept thinking was where was the head? Scared stiff they bolted out of that house and back into town. "Jim?" another person asked, they turned to a gruff farmer holding a sack in one hand, "Bobby Brown it's be ages," "You think, and who might this fine maid be," James said rather proudly to his once best friend, "Oh this is my fiancé Gwen Congdon," "Well nice to meet you Gwen. I better get going or the Mrs will go ballistic and think I'm down the pub again." James definitely took note of how odd he was acting.

Gwen helped James's mum cook that evening as a way to get to know her. "So you're from cornwall?" "Yep the one and only Kernow, daughter of a fisherman and a seamstress. I could fish before I could walk or talk," "Oh I love this song," Jim's mother cranked the radio up for Hey Soul Sister, it reminded her of home and how that was the song Tim would sing to his wife before he died when his ship capsized. "Can you please turn that off," "No this is my favourite song," "You don't know what that song actually means. Please just at most turn it down," "NO it's my favourite song," "What's all the yelling about?" "She keeps insisting I turn down my favourite song." James listened and heard Hey Soul Sister, he also wanted to turn it over, "Please can we turn that over, no one can listen to that song anymore not after that One Rebulic," "We?" "We were playing this song on the bridge when we were fired on, we had our shields down as it was the neutral zone after all, the shot killed 45 people and injured hundreds others. The ship that fired didn't even try to explain themselves and instead headed at warp to the Romulan territory before we could even get the identifications down. No one can listen to Hey Soul Sister anymore not after that night." that definitely soured the mood.
Gwen was fascinated by the BBQ sauce as all she'd ever known was keptup, "What's this?" "BBQ sauce why have you never seen that before?" "Mum," "Sorry, but you'd think she'd know what BBQ sauce is?" "Well we only have keptup," "Couldn't you go to your nearest Walmart?" "What is Walmart? But if it's a superstore the nearest one is a 12 hour drive or an eight hour sail," "Oh okay then. So Gwen what exactly do you do on the Enterprise?" they tried to make friendly conversation but it was more awkward than they'd hoped, "Oh I'm a helmsman but I mainly work as an engineer. But back home I helped dad on his fishing boat till they sang Drunken Sailor, that paragraph Put him in the bed with the captain's daughter? Well I was the captain's daughter. My dad was furious so I got a job in the local shop. I sometimes take my boat out to meet the fisherman for lunch but only when I had an hour lunch break," "So why did you leave Port Issac?" James spat his drink out knowing this wouldn't go well, "Gwen don't blow your top," "Blow your top?" "Left because of my brat," she got up and launched a tennis ball at the wall, "Of a sister. She lied to everyone and left me thinking I killed her for years. And to think we were twins till she pulled that stunt." she caught the ball and excused herself to cool off a little. Good thing she did.
She heard a shot down by the river bank and saw someone run through the trees that lined the property. Before anyone could stop her Gwen charged for the woods hot on the shooter's heels. She managed to get a good look at the face as well as a few blurred pictures before losing them at the road. "Shoot!" she yelled remembering that he shot someone. She bolted to the lake catching up with James who was just as alert as she was. The victim was DOA with a gunshot to the heart close range with what appeared to be a pistol, "I'll call the police," "Tell them there has been a murder this was no accident," James wasabout to call the police when he reconsiged the body. It was Bobby Brown. "So who found the body?" the detective asked sitting down the witnesses, "We did," "Actually you did I was right behind you. I heard the shot and saw someone run through the woods. I went after them but they had local knowledge on there side but I still got photographs," she pulled out her PADD and handed it to them photos on display, "What do you mean by local knowledge," James quickly picked up saying, "She's my fiance I brought her here on our shore leave to meet my parents. She hadn't even heard of this area till I brought her here," "And how did you know the victim," "We were best friends since day one then I joined the academy and went on from there," "I didn't catch your names middle names to please," "Captain James Tiberius Kirk of the USS Enterprise, brace yourselves for hers," Oh ha ha Jim, it's Lieutenant Gweynneth Rosenwyn Morvoren Congdon-Williams also of the USS Enterprise," "Um how do you spell that?"
She laughed as it always happened to outsiders, "Don't worry no one outside of Cornwall can spell my name," she then went to mutter in cornish just to confuse them, "What was that?" "I feel more comfortable speaking in my native tongue sometimes, english isn't my first language," "So you aren't from around here and you had no clue who Bobby Brown was?" "No I've heard Jim talking about him to Spock, Scotty or Bones but other than that. Oh no he spilled when we got Spock sugar hyper as a joke, but he just said they'd known each other for years," "I still can't believe you talked him into that trap," "Just like I put super glue on the captain's chair," "That was you?" "Oh no I'm in trouble now aren't I?" "You owe that poor red shirt an explanation," "What?" "Oh star fleet drama you guys don't need to understand it as long as we do." they established that Jmaes and Gwen most likely didn't have anything to do with it, they were instead told to stay close in case they needed their story again.
After days of not hearing anything the two returned to the Enterprise as their shore leave was up. Gwen was on the bridge with Scotty when they got the message, "Captain we're getting a message through from Riverside Police Station I think they're just operating on the wrong frequency should I put it through?" "Yes Uhura," "Ah James," the detective had to check his notepad for Gwens' name, "Gwen I've been trying to get a hold of you two for the last few hours. We've gathered everyone up and now it's time we reveal who and how they killed Bobby Brown, let's go over what we know. Gwen was outside to calm down from a dinner fight she failed to mention," "I didn't mention it because my private quarrels with my sister are none of your business," "And we know that you didn't even know Bobby so how could you have killed him. You all heard the gunshots from inside the house but while you were running to the lake where the shots had come from Gwen had seen the suspect run. But of course as she didn't know the area the killer was able to lose her in the woods. That's when we found out Gwen knew how to track virtually anyone or anything in the woods?" "Point is," "Why didn't she track the killer down? That's when we found out there was a second shot. That second shot was the shot that you in the house heard but Gwen didn't. She only saw you James run to the lake. So how could the killer fire two shots when he'd actually left the area? So how did you do it Thomas," "What me?" "Yes you. I suspect you fired the first shot then got chased by Gwen, you grew up in those woods much like James and Bobby so at some point you doubled back and fired again making sure he was dead. But you never intended to kill Bobby, we compared Bobby's clothing to the photograph of Gwen we took, with her hair up in a bun they looked almost identical from behind. You remembered Gwen didn't you from the academy, you went to the one in the UK same as her. It was Federation gossip that actually pointed us to you. We learned that there she was a prankster in the academy but no one could figure out who it was as they were never caught and never left any evidence behind. With the slip of a tongue from Gwen she revealed she was the prankster known only as Dia de los Muertos, you already knew because if it wasn't for one of her pranks you would have still been in the academy," "Now you've lost me?" "April 19th Dia de los Muertos rigged all the windows and doors in the school to swing open when closed and close when opened. That seemingly harmless if not confusing prank caused Thomas to throw his project over the teacher. I couldn't find out what the project was but it left your teacher paralyised from the waist down and you out of the academy. So thinking Bobby was Gwen you pulled the trigger to him. An almost perfect plan. Take him away, thank you Enterprise for listening to this and sorry to Gwen for revealing her secret. Oh and James check your seat."
With the screen shut down James tried to stand up but he was super glued to the chair, "GWEN!" James yelled as Gwen made a bolt for it, he used the anti stick paste and freed himself before running after her. She squealed as he rugby tackled her to the ground, this was his revenge for the super glued chair. "Gwen this is my revenge!" he yelled tickling her, she hated being tickled it was the greatest form of torture, "Okay I'm sorry just please sto.." before she could finish her sentence she was choking and weezing a clear sign to stop. It took a few minutes but she calmed down and was definitely fine. On the bridge Scotty and Uhura were laughing hysterically, "We heard her squealing from here, what did you do, tickle her?" "He did," she choked out between her laughter again. Bones walked in on this half choking laughter, "Everything okay in here?" "She won't stop laughing," "Okay Gwen you need to calm down before you collapse from lack of oxygen,"

8 194The Systems of the Multiverse - A Guide for the Multiversal Traveler
The Systems of the Multiverse have their issues. I, an observer from outside the multiverse have made it into my mission to tell you, the multiversal traveler about those issues and dangers. This is a relatively low effort NaNoWriMo and Writhathon project. I want to test myself if I can manage 55k words in a month, likely updating every single day until the end. This story is told in the form of an in universe book. Well, I say story... While this definetly won't be great, I still hope it will be enjoyable. I do my best to avoid grammar mistakes and spelling issues, but won't promise anything. Corrections are welcome, this is also an excercise to improve my writing from a technical standpoint. Not from a worldbuilding and character standpoint however, for that you need time. Oh, the keyboards (and computers) that the observer destroys are not real and only exists in story to have an excuse to easily end this story at the end of NaNoWriMo. I also personally like reading LitRPG stories, so this isn't meant to hate them. It might come over that way, but many of those issues are simply fun to think about: what would really happen if the world is so, seen through a lease of negativity :-) [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]
8 124Conquest Of Mortem
*NOTE* This novel is a war of attrition. To say anything less is a disservice to its demand. While comparable to other such works as Ulysses or Moby Dick, each sentence in Conquest is an enemy to be tackled. Not in the ways of difficulty but in absurd density that wishes nothing more than to destroy what patience you may have. Do not tackle chapters as you would ordinary chapters in an ordinary book. Tackle each chapter as a book unto itself. A foe to be vanquished, a period of life to leave behind. Seek to be master of this work. Seek to overcome. For in its design is the willpower, and the perseverance, and the strength of someone who sought meaning in struggle. As I discovered these in times of ultimate desperation, so I hope for you to discover these things. This novel is a love letter to your trials. May you overcome them. May you master them. May you become conquerer.- SeedSagaA literary epic for logophiles, philosophers, and poets alike. A journey into zeitgeist, the impact of media on culture, and the endurance of morality against an onslaught of hatred. These vague descriptions do little to compact Conquest's density into a bite-size summary. They do however relate the basest themes found within. A plot, if such can be surmised, is strung thinly across multiple perspectives, weaving together these concepts into a seemingly distorted tapestry of indecipherable events. Inspired by early 20th century modernism, Conquest will challenge the reader, and provide critique on the medium upon which all great stories are derived. Further interpretation is up to you now; an explorer among a sea of words. Venture on and discover what lies ahead, in...CONQUEST OF MORTEM
