《In The Shadows (Star Trek TOS/AOS)》Part 4

Gwen snapped out of her day dream with a start. James was calling her name to try and snap her back to reality, "What?" "You completely zoned out and muttering a name, Cayla?" "Cayla, yeah I don't like talking about her sorry what are we doing again?" "Taking the Fisherman back to Port Issac dam you really were zoned out, you must be excited about going home," "Yeah," she bluntly replied as she clutched the pendant they had only just noticed.
It was half of a heart on the front it said Once A Twin Gweynneth Rosenwyn Morvoren and presumably her birthday August 16th love Cayla Kerensa Chesten and on the back it read, 'No matter how far apart we are one thing will never change, is that we were sisters by chance friends by choice.' "That's a nice pendant Gwen is Cayla your sister?" Bones asked trying to start a conversation, "Oh, um, she's my twin we're identical she has the other half only her's says Cayla Kerensa Chesten and love Gweynneth Rosenwyn Morvoren and Always a twin," "Is that your full name?" Spock asked in a rather cold way but that was Spock for ya, "Yeah not many people can pronounce my middle names," "Rosenwyn Morvoren, fair rose and sea maiden right?" "Yeah Cayla had rather easier names on the tongue but Chesten is our equivalent to Christine or follower of christ and Kerensa means love. She was my bestie."
The fact that she was tightly gripping the pendant sent alarm bells ringing. Arriving at Port Issac Gwen immediately recognised everyone and vice versa. Spock noticed how at the first chance she got Gweynneth slipped away towards the church on the hill, "Hey Spock have you seen Gwen?" James asked, "Yeah, she went that way," June, a post woman, shouted across to the pair, "She's probably up in the old church yard who can blame her after what she went through," "What do you mean?" "Oh you better ask her she's meeting Cayla."

An idea sprung to mind, they were an official couple (though not in public) now so why not tell her sister. Following their directions he hiked the hill to the old church yard, it wasn't hard to miss her head poking out from over a grave. "So Gwen where is your twin Cayla?" She looked up at him and steadily lifted her hand to point at the headstone, "Cayla Kerensa ChestenCongdon-Williams a loving daughter, big sister and twin who left her other half alone to soon. Oh I'm so sorry," "And to think if it wasn't for me she would still be alive." Kirk's ears pricked up at that as he sat on the grass next to her, "Go on I'm listening?" "We were out in the bay taking our sailing boat, we'd saved it from the scrap yard and did all the repairs ourselves. We were in the harbour by Issac's island, it's towards the back of the bay closer towards the cliff. Me and her were the only two who knows how to get to the island so we would disappear for days on end and camp out there. We were on our way back when she started splashing me, so I splashed her back then asked her take over steering while I get the oars out the wind was already dying by that point. She kept splashing me so I splashed her one back, she lost her balance and slipped. As she slipped she banged her neck on the metal sail bar broke her neck instantly, I thought she'd just hit her head so when she went in the water near the rapids I panicked, there's a reason why those rocks are called Demons Rocks they are brutal at high tide. I couldn't keep the boat steady and pull her on board so we capsized, the ship washed up and I piggybacked Cayla onto the highest rock away from the sea before finally calling the RNLI. One of the rescuers took Cayla from me and when he shook his head while feeling for a pulse I lost my other half. I wasn't myself for weeks, I was locked up in our room doing nothing but drawing all the memories I had of Cayla she was the singer I was the drawer. We both had graduated from the academy so after a month I left Kernow on my bike and never looked back. I then joined the Enterprise and became a different Gweynneth."

He noticed the tears stream down her cheeks and out of know where presented this tissue packet for her. "Thanks T," "Is that my new nickname?" "Maybe. I haven't been out in the water since especially not on our boat. I also refused to tell anyone how to get to the island so no one has been there either," "Well why don't you go back there. You've been burying this for a long time. Go to the island say goodbye to Cayla you did the right thing you can not mourn forever. But I think you should have the right to say goodbye."
She took those words to heart. By morning she was face to face with their old boat, it took multiple attempts for her to gain the strength to board it. A great feeling washed over her, one she'd missed. Her pulling the boat out from it's corner at the abandoned lifeguard station created a racket that drove everyone out onto the harbour. One by one people of all ages came out to watch Gwen sail out towards Issac's island, "Go Gweynneth!" They yelled cheering after her. She looked behind a sense of pride bubbled as her home town came out to wish her well. With the cheers behind her she opened the sail to pick up speed, she missed that feeling.
Glancing at the now bare demons rocks she was surprised to see a silhouette on the rocks just pleasantly reading as who else still read books other than Port Issac's residents, it had to be Kirk, "Thanks for the advice!" She yelled sailing as close as she could, "Your welcome it did you some good," "If you come with me I can show you the best spot for reading?" "I'm down." He chuckled picking up his satchel, "Permission to come aboard this fine vessel?" "Not as fine as your ship but permission granted," she chuckled throwing his bag in the cabin and ceiling the hatch, "Why?" "Round this corner there are rapids theres a calm spot right through them but you still get wet hold on!" She dropped the sail and brought them steadily through the rapids and into a small sandy bay. It was like nothing he'd ever seen before, such tranquility and beauty, "Give us a hand will ya we need to drag up out of the way of the waves," she nervously laughed pulling it most of the way up the beach.
After making sure they weren't followed she led him up through a cave hidden by moss. He had to admit this cave had so many widening tunnels it was easy to get lost in but she clearly knew them well. "Alright these stairs are steep and slippery so hold onto the rope we put down the middle," the well opened up onto a ruined courtyard that over looked the whole area, the walls of the once magnificent castle were crumbling but offered shelter from the harsh western winds, "Welcome to my secret hide out," "Now I can see why you don't want people here. What are you doing?" He asked as she moved aside fallen bricks, "I knew it was still here, it's a natural spring that runs from the cliff. There is nothing like it anywhere else," they sat on the grass listening to more stories of the cornish way, James found a new favourite Widow Women.

Alex was dying, and all the millions his father had left him meant nothing. The life he had been so eager to embrace, to do the memory of his father proud, would soon come to an end. Cancer. That ugly, terrible word. He had tried to be strong for his mother, even when the treatments left him violently ill, his body wracked with pain, his friends and even his girlfriend leaving him almost as fast as his once impressive physique wasted to nothing under the ravages of his illness. And just when he thought all hope was dead, a couple discrete referals placed by high-powered friends of his family got him an exclusive spot at the most sophisticated cryonic facility in the world. He didn't know if there was such a thing as an afterlife, but part of the package included uploading a copy of his cortex into a digital universe filled countless worlds to explore, where he could embrace whatever class or profession he could dream of. All of which sounded hell of a lot better than the miserable death waiting for him in the real world. In the end, he signed the paperwork, putting his pathetic flickering life in the hands of potential quacks and charlatans. After all, with death just days away, what did he have to lose? Even if he could never be successfully revived, he could at least adventure his heart out. (Authors Note: Books 1-6 are now live on Amazon and here is a link if you wanted to check it out!
