《The Unwanted Mate》Chapter 7

Mark's point of view:
I listen to the guards talking. I listen to the other inmates. I have heard through the grapevine that Hunter has been keeping Arianna under house arrest. That's a good thing. That means it'll be easier to get to her. Once a week, we are allowed to shift and walk inside a caged courtyard for 15 minutes. I don't have any time to prepare. I quickly thought up an escape plan.
"Mark! Let's go!"
Two guards come to take me to the courtyard. I will shift there. Over the years, I have been building up a tolerance to wolfsbane. Nobody knew that, except me. Wolfsbane is supposed to weaken a wolf's strength. They give it to me when I get my 15 minutes of time. I pretend it weakens me, but it doesn't. I can easily get through their defenses. We arrive at the courtyard, and the guards administer an injection of wolfsbane. I pretend to be weakened by it. I shift slowly, and when the guards aren't paying much attention to me, I make my move. I run head on for the far corner of the courtyard. The fencing looks weakest there, and just as I thought, I burst through without any issues. As soon as I do, the prison alarms go off. I take off running at full speed through the nearby forest. I know my way back to the mansion easily. I have hidden weapons and supplies in an old tree trunk close to the property grounds. I have to shift back to collect what I need. Clothes and shoes in a backpack. A couple of guns, a knife, and money that I have been saving here. It's not much. About $2000. Enough to get away on my own, but now I must think of Ari. I quickly got dressed. By now, the mansion has been alerted to my escape. I am sure that Arianna has additional guards posted to protect her. I make my way quickly and quietly around the forest until I get to the clearing that is closest to her cottage. There is nowhere to hide from this point. I see 6 guards around her cottage and possibly more inside. So far, there is no sign of the Alpha. He could be there inside with her. I have to take that chance. I pull my guns and step out from my hiding spot. I shoot the first guard I see and the gunshot has now alerted the others. They start shooting, but luckily, I pick off two more. One gunshot grazes my arm, but I barely notice it. As I got closer, I managed to grab a guard, using him as a shield and take out another guard. The last guard comes running and I easily pick him off as well, then snap the neck of the guard I am using. No other guards come running and I bolt into the cottage. I was correct in assuming there were more guards. Two more of them come at me, and I use hand to hand combat to take them both out. I head to the bedroom, where I find Arianna cowering behind the bed. She peeks up at me.

"Mark?"
Arianna:
I hear gunshots outside and fighting. The front door bursts open and I can hear fighting in the living room. The house sounds like it is being torn apart. I am terrified, so I am trying to hide behind the bed. When the bedroom door bursts open, I peek my head up to look into Mark's eyes.
"Mark?"
"Ari…"
He runs over to me and pulls me up and into his arms. He cups my face and kisses me.
"Are you okay? Did they hurt you?"
"No..really."
"Come with me now. There is no time to explain. I can get us out of here, but we must leave now."
I do not hesitate. I nod my head.
"Lead the way."
HUNTER:
When the alarms sounded in the prison, I was informed that Mark had escaped during his shifting time.
"How did this happen? Was he given his injection of wolfsbane?"
"He was my Alpha, but he still got away."
"Find him! NOW!"
I knew he would go for Arianna. I sent additional guards to her cottage. If eight guards can't stop him, then nobody can. I have to find him first. My tracking skills are better than any other wolf. Once I am outside, I shift into Aden and sniff the air. I can smell all the wolves around me. I hone my hearing, and hear gunshots coming from the cabins.
Arianna...Mark…
I take off in that direction. By the time I have Arianna's cabin in view, I see her and Mark running toward the treeline.
How did he get past 8 guards?
I can catch up to them. I take off toward them. I can just sense her wolf's presence. She has shifted. Her and Mark must be running for it. I push myself to run faster and catch up with them. I can just see them up ahead. Unfortunately, Mark has now spotted me and forces Arianna into another direction. I know where they are headed. There is a train yard in this direction with many freight cars heading across the pack territories. If I don't catch them before they make it onto a train, I may not be able to find them.

Arianna:
My legs hurt, but Dean pushes me on. We must outrun the Alpha. Just up ahead, I can see and hear some trains. I think I know what he has planned. I am amazed that we've been able to outrun him so far.
We can do this Eva. Push...we must outrun the Alpha and get away.
I am with you Ari...together..
With a surge of adrenaline we push harder and burst into the train yard. Dean runs toward a freight train that is at full steam. One of the cars is open and we run for it. Dean leaps into the car and looks back at me. I am still running for the car. I may not make it. He shifts into Mark.
"Come on Ari!"
He reaches for me and grabs me by the scruff of my neck and yanks me into the car just as the Alpha nips the air right where I was. Luckily for us, the train car is faster than him, and we speed away fast from the Alpha. He is still trying to catch up, but as we get farther away, he slows and finally stops. We can just make out his booming howl as we speed away.
