《Taking Her Home》Untitled Part 19

After spending an hour shopping with her mother, Rebecca returned to work. She spent several more hours seeing patients. She was speaking with a woman who was being discharged about her follow up appointment when a nurse came in the room. "Rebecca, someone is here to see you." Rebecca nodded her head. "He's really cute too," the nurse winked. Rebecca's eyebrows scrunched together in thought as to who it could be.

"Okay I will be there as soon as I finish here," she told the nurse before turning back to the women. "Miss Sanchez, I need you to get labs done before your appointment next week. Other than that, you are free to go. Just take it easy for the next couple of days," she finished up before leaving the room.

She walked to the nurse's station and looked around looking for who could possibly be there to see her. Her eyes finally landed on Vincent. Her eyes widened in shock. "What the hell is he doing here?" she whispered to herself. "Um... What are you doing here?" She asked him when she stopped in front of him and looked up. He looked down at her and smirked.

"I was going to call you, but I was in the area and thought I would see if you had time to talk maybe?" He shoved his hands into his pockets and started rocking on heels. Rebecca thought he looked a little nervous and she smiled thinking it was pretty cute. She held back the laugh she felt coming. Opting for a firm thin-lipped look she looked at him in the eye.

"Give me just a second," she held up a finger before turning and walking behind the counter of the nurse's station to look at her schedule. She had about an hour before she had any appointments so she figured that she could see what he wanted. She walked back over to Vincent. "I have some time. How about a coffee?" He nodded in response and motioned for her to lead the way.

They both ordered a coffee and sat down at a table. "I wanted to apologize for not calling," He finally said after a short period of silence. Rebecca smiled and took a drink of coffee before waving her hand dismissively at him.

"You seemed to have forgotten that you were under no obligation to call. We both agreed that neither of us wanted anything out of the night and it was a one-time thing," she reminded him of their deal. He smiled letting a little chuckle like laugh out. He liked that she was able to make him smile. He had laughed more in the few times that he had been around with her than he had in the last several years.

"I do remember our deal, but I did have a great time with you and I should have called," he cleared his throat and looked into her eyes. "They are just as beautiful as I remember," he said so no one could hear him. Rebecca heard him but thought she heard him wrong. She looked down at her coffee. She wasn't sure what to say. "Why did he really show up?" She asked herself. She continued to look at her coffee and think of what to say to him.

"How have you been this past week?" he finally asked breaking the silence. Rebecca looked up at him and smiled. "Thank God she smiled," he thought to himself. He was horrible at small talk.

"I have been okay," she shrugged. "Busy at work and stuff. Life, you know?" She let out a little sigh. She hated small talk. She was still wondering why he was here surely it wasn't for small talk.

Vincent nodded his head, "same." The silence came back and they both looked at their coffee's.

"Why are you really here?" Rebecca finally asked when she couldn't take it anymore. She only had so much time for her break and she didn't think wasting it in awkward silence was the best way to spend it.

Vincent sighed and ran his hands through his hair, "honestly. I wanted to ask you out on a proper date," he gave her that pantie dropping smile. Rebecca was shocked into silence. She opened her mouth to say something before closing it. After several times of opening and closing her mouth like a fish gasping for water, she sent a frown in his direction.

"Didn't we just talk about our deal? I thought neither of us was looking for anything," she finally said in response.

Vincent smiled, chuckling, "you're right. Neither of us was looking for anything," he sighed, "But that was before we met each other. Maybe I just didn't know there was something to be looking for." Vincent shrugged and looked her in the eyes. He actually meant what he said. He really did and he was probably more shocked by that than she was.

Rebecca smiled at the words he said. Her mother had once told her, "sometimes what you're looking for comes when you're not looking at all." Her mother and father had been fighting. Her mother had decided to go get a hotel. When she went to grab her purse, it wasn't where she normally put it. It was on a bookshelf and when she picked it up, their wedding album was underneath it. After her parents made up her mother had given her that little quote and walked away. Rebecca never had the heart to tell her mother she had come up with the plan and it worked out exactly as she had expected. Now all these years later, those words came back to her and they fit. She giggled a little and shook her head.

"What's so funny?" Vincent asked her with a smile. "Too cheesy?"

Rebecca shook her head, "No. Just the right amount of cheese. I was just thinking about something my mother said to me once. It's nothing," she waved her hand to dismiss herself.

Vincent laughed a little, "oaky. Well is that a yes then?" He could see that she was chewing on the inside of her cheek again and smiled. Nervous meant she wanted to say yes. "Or it could mean she wants to say no but not hurt your feelings," a little voice said to him. He never felt unsure of himself before. What was she doing to him? He watched as Rebecca nodded her head at him before looking up into his eyes.

"Yes. I will go out with you. Just once. And no. Sex," she finally answered sternly to make sure he understood she was serious. Vincent raised his hands up in surrender and nodded in agreement.

"Great. I will pick you up after work?" He phrased it as a question, but Rebecca was pretty sure he wouldn't have taken no, for an answer so, she just nodded her head.

"Oh wait. I don't get off until eight tonight," she realized as she stood up. "I have to cover the beginning of a coworker shift in the ER."

Vincent shrugged, "that's fine. I can wait for you," he watched her face for any sign of disappointment in his words. He wondered if she was making it up. When she smiled and he watched her blush a little. Smiling with satisfaction, he put money on the table. Rebecca thought it was weird they had paid at the counter for their drinks and the tip jar was there. No one had waited on them, but he must just be used to leaving a tip wherever he went. She jumped a little when she felt his hand on her lower back and pulled her out of her thoughts. "I will walk you back upstairs," he motioned for her to start walking.

She walked to the elevator and pushed the button. "Shouldn't I go home and change first?" she asked turning to look at him. She watched him raise his eyebrows as if he was shocked she was questioning him. Honestly, he was a little shocked. People didn't normally question him in his life. He almost kind of liked it. Not that he would ever admit it to anyone.

"I will take care of it," he simply said and Rebecca felt as if she wasn't supposed to say any more about it. And she didn't.

When they stepped off the elevator on her floor, she watched all the women's eyes, in the area, snap to him and look him up and down. She smiled and heard a giggle before she realized it came from her. Blushing she looked at her shoes trying to get it under control before looking back up to say goodbye.

"I will see you tonight," Vincent said. He was close enough that she could feel his warm breath as he spoke and she could smell his minty coffee breath. She closed her eyes, getting herself under control again and opening them. She just smiled and nodded before quickly walking away. She could hear him chuckle. She didn't know why she got so weird all of a sudden.
