《Taking Her Home》I'm Being Followed

The next week, Rebecca went about her days as she usually did. She went to work, hung out with Joni and Tobin, and watched tv and fell asleep on the couch. On her way to work on Tuesday, she felt like someone was watching her, but brushed it off. By Thursday she was almost positive that she was being followed. She saw the same man in the lobby of her apartment building and the lobby at the hospital. She tried her hardest to tell herself that it was just a coincidence. That happened three days in a row.

Saturday rolled around Rebecca had a lunch date with Joni and Tobin. After they had all ordered she told them about the weird feelings she had been having.

"What if it's Vincent?" Joni says. Rebecca wasn't sure if she was worried or she thought it was sweet that he may be stalking her. Joni looked between her two friends who both gave her a look. "What?" she shrugged, "you barely know him. You looked hot the night of the gala. Maybe he got hooked."

Rebecca rolled her eyes and looked at Tobin who was sitting beside her. "I don't think that Vincent would do that," Tobin said. He regretted it almost immediately when he saw both girls sit up straighter. He knew he had said too much already.

"That's right you know him," Joni pointed at him. Tobin looked down at his hands trying to think of what to say to get out of the questions he knew where coming. Joni wasn't known for dropping things until she got answers and they usually needed to be the answers she wanted to hear.

"He owns the club remember. I told you that our dad's work together. I know of him. We aren't buddies," he sighed.

"Well, you know more about him than we do. Is it true he doesn't date?" Joni asked rushing the words out and starting to think of what her next question would be.

"The entire city knows that he doesn't date," Tobin said in a duh tone.

Joni rolled her eyes. "Okay. Fine. Do you know why?"

Tobin took a deep breath before rubbing the back of his neck he wasn't really sure. There were a ton of rumors that circulated around the family. Everything from he had his heart broken or was gay to he just liked not being tied down or didn't have any respect for women. He was pretty sure that it wasn't the last one. He had seen how he tried his mother and sisters he knew he had respect for women. The number of women he had been photographed with said he wasn't gay and he had grown up in the family he had never seen him with anyone long enough to get his heart broken. Maybe he just didn't want to be tied down.

He looked up at Joni whose eyes were boring into him. He didn't know what to say that would get her off his back. Maybe if he didn't give her anything, she would get bored. "I don't know," he shrugged.

Joni sighed. She had a question she wanted to know for a while. It was a crazy one. It was a rumor that the whole city seemed to want to believe, but it was straight out of a movie so, it couldn't be true. "All the more reason to ask," she told herself. "Is he really a member of the mafia?" She asked almost excited to hear the answer.

Tobin's eyes started to grow, but he caught his reaction before either girl could see it. "What?" He asked a little louder than he meant to. "You are crazy. You really believe that craziness that is floating around the city?" He laughed trying to not sound nervous.

The look on Joni's face told him that she was not happy with his answer and she had a follow-up question coming. Before she could open her mouth, he stood up. "Sorry girls. I have to get going. I forgot I have to meet my dad for a thing," He reached in his pocket, pulled his wallet out and threw enough money on the table to cover all their bills before quickly walking away from the table without another word. He knew that he was going to have to answer for this later, but he figured he might be able to buy himself a few days and think of something.

Rebecca looked at Joni and raised her eyebrow. "What the hell was that?" She laughed.

Joni shrugged, "I have no idea, but you know that I am going to find out!"

Rebecca laughed and rolled her eyes. "You are not going to badger him. You know he hates that."

Joni looked at her best friend like she was crazy. She could do anything she wanted and no one could tell her any different. "Anyway," she waved her hand at Rebecca, "let's talk about how we are going to find out who your stalker is?"

Rebecca looked at her food and pushed it around on the plate, "I didn't say I had a stalker. For sure," she looked at her friend.

"Sure, you're not sure, but you have seen the same guy several times. I know you're not crazy so, you must have a stalker." Rebecca rolled her eyes and laughed at Joni's logic. She loved her best friend more than anything but she spent a good amount of her free time coming up with some sort of scheme. Rebecca tried her hardest to not get involved in them, but Joni usually was able to drag her into them somehow. "I know you're thinking this is going to be another one of my crazy schemes, but it's not. I think the first thing you should do is send a text to Vincent."

Rebecca shook her head, "no. No way am I texting him. We talked and neither of us wants anything serious. I. Told. You. This. I'm not going to freak him out by texting him to ask him if he's a crazy stalker," She practically shouted across the table. "Besides I saw the guys face. It's not him."

"Yeah, but if he is a part of the Mafia, like I think, then he could have hired someone to follow you around. I mean I'm sure he's busy. He wouldn't be able to do it himself." Joni continued to eat her lunch acting as if this was a normal conversation. For her, it kind of was, but Rebecca shook her head in disbelief anyway.

"You are a complete crazy person," Rebecca said finishing her salad and looking at her watch. She had to meet her mother. It was her grandmother's birthday. Rebecca was horrible when it came to picking presents for people so, her mother always helped. "I have to go. I'm meeting Momma to get a present for Grandma before I have to get back to work," she stood up, counted the money Tobin had left to make sure he covered everything plus a tip, then hugged her friend and walked towards the door of the restaurant.

As she reached the door, she got the same feeling she had been feeling and turned around. The man that she had seen several times wasn't quite fast enough and she caught a glimpse of him as he ducked behind a waiter bumping him into a customer and causing a commotion. Rebecca took this chance to run out of the restaurant hoping to lose him. She didn't know why he was following her, but she hoped she wouldn't have to find out.
