《■ Helpless ■ Gilbert Blythe ■》The school house(s)

That Monday morning both Victoria and Edward had to wake up earlier. It was their first day in the school of Avonlea and Victoria felt beyond excited.

Victoria was always good at school and loved going with all her heart. Her mother would always brag that she had one of the brightest minds there is. Back in England, the schools took Shakespeare's works seriously and they started reading through all the plays during her time in school.

Victoria picked out a dark green dress which matched her eyes and made them pop out more. She pulled her hair into a braid, as back in England the other students would complain about how they couldn't see anything because of her very messy, curly hair.

Edward entered the room, looking smart in his elegant clothing just as Victoria was tying the end of the braid with a matching green ribbon. "You're looking smart today," Victoria commented as she looked at her brother who had a worrying look on his face.

"Is something wrong?" She asked as she kneeled to be levelled with him. Edward shook his head but that didn't even begin to fool her. She was going to push him to say something else when she heard their mother call them down.

The two young Edwards walked down the stairs together and entered the kitchen were the other family members were. "Well, don't you two look fit," Hamilton commented as he placed the cup of tea down.

Victoria smiled but Edward didn't, making Victoria worry even further. They sat down in the empty seats. Victoria grabbed a teacup and poured steaming water from the kettle.

"The schoolhouse is only about twenty or thirty minutes away. You best be going as soon as you finish." Benedict explained as he bit out of some toast. "It is not very difficult to arrive there, just go straight into the woods. If you keep heading north you shouldn't find any problems."

Victoria nodded as she took a bite out of her toast. "Duly noted and don't worry, I'll take care of my brother and we both will behave."

The rest of the breakfast went like that, with the additional taunts from Hamilton as he mocked them for still having to go to school. Hamilton was twenty years old and studying to become a doctor.

"It's best if you two leave, you wouldn't want to be late on the first day, do you?" Hamilton said with his eyebrows raised.

"Of course we don't. Come on Eddie." Victoria said as she wiped the crumbs off her dress. They passed their mother who was at the door. They were handed a bag with a slate, a few pieces of paper, their books and a pot of ink for each one of them. "Good luck." Their mother finally said as she straightened out Edward's clothes.

The two siblings left the house and made their way towards the woods. The first thing that Victoria did was take the bag Edward was holding, for her to carry and took his hand.

After five minutes of walking in silence, Victoria uttered her first word. "Alright, what's wrong with you?" Edward didn't talk at first, it was when Victoria asked again that he started getting things off his chest.

"What if they don't like me?" Edward said. Victoria chuckled. "That's what's been worrying you. Well, I can assure Eddie, they won't. Everyone likes you."

"Sure they did. In England!" Edward exclaimed as he kicked a rock out of the way. "Over here, we're different, weird. They don't get our accent or our words. We're outcasts. What if they make fun of my name? Edward Edwards, that's just horrible."

Victoria scoffed. "You have a great name. You're named after our dearly beloved King, you should be proud to share a name that is used in royalty." Victoria explained. "Well, you're named after our Queen but your name isn't Victoria Victorias." Edward continued to contradict.

Victoria sighed. "You have nothing to complain about, you are well aware that our brother is named Hamilton, right?" That statement made Edward nod his head slightly, not completely disagreeing with his sister.

"Mother and father also thought about calling you, Balthazar. Let's say that it was a good thing you were born a little while after King Edward the seventh took reign. Their heart was very set on Balthazar."

"Well, at least I have that to be grateful for. Where are we? Shouldn't we be there yet?" Victoria stopped as soon as her brother said that. She looked at her surroundings and bit her lower lip in thought.

"No. We must have to walk a bit further." Victoria stated and that's exactly what they did. They walked for another ten minutes but there was nothing but trees. "We're lost, aren't we?" Edward stated. Victoria shook her head. "Not lost just... misplaced."

Edward raised an eyebrow at his sister. "Oh, right we're not lost. I'm sure the school in Avonlea loves to do their lessons while sitting in a tree."

Victoria glared at Edward. "Don't get sassy with me. I'm sure we're not that far away, we must have fallen behind because we were taking to long. Let's make a run for it."

The two ran for five minutes and they finally found the end of the forest. As soon as they got out they could see the two schoolhouses. "We're late but that's nothing to be worried about. Just apologize and say that it was your first time coming here." Victoria explained to Edward as they got closer to the houses.

Edward frantically shook his head. "I can't do that, I wouldn't know what to say. Please, I'm scared." Victoria groaned. "Fine. Let's go. We don't want to be later than we already are."

The Edwards made it towards one of the schoolhouses and Victoria looked into the windows to see which is which. When she saw the young children there she knew that it was Edward's place.

Victoria handed Edward his stack of books and knocked on the door which was already opened. The teacher who seemed to be very old stopped writing on the board with chalk to look at the two. The young pupils' gaze fell onto the two of them as well.

Victoria cleared her throat. "I'm sorry to disturb you but today was our first day and we got lost on our track," Victoria explained. The old man gave a smile. "Well that's alright, come in, my boy. You can sit next to Mister Allen over there." Victoria smiled at her brother and urged him to go in. When he got seated Victoria smiled and thanked the teacher and headed towards her schoolhouse.

Victoria hoped that the teacher would be as kind as the other one but before she arrived she heard a male voice shout. Well, looks like she was wrong.

She waited a while until the shouting eased a little and then went to knock on the door which like the other one, was open. Everyone turned to stare at her as soon as she knocked on the door the first time.

"What do you want?" The teacher asked with a bitter tinge in his voice. "Sorry. It's my first time coming here and I got lost on the way, it is not like me to be late." Victoria explained with a shy smile on her face.

"Oh, yeah, I had word that you should be joining us. What are you doing just standing there? Get inside." Victoria did what she was told and entered the schoolhouse. The other boys and girls didn't stop staring at her as she took off her coat.

"I'm only allowing you to enter because it's your first day, if you are late again you wouldn't be allowed to enter. You understand?"

"Yes sir."

"Take a seat next to Miss Barry over here." Victoria's gaze fell onto the only empty seat there was only the girl's side. She sat next to a girl with dark brown hair and a blue dress.

"Remind me of your name again." The teacher asked. "Umm... Victoria. Victoria Edwards." The man nodded his head. Victoria could still feel all the eyes on her.

What, have they never seen a British girl arrive late?

"Do you have all your books?" He asked and she nodded her head. "Yes, they're right here."

"Good now let's continue. Unless you want to interrupt us again?" The teacher said with a bitter look on his face. Victoria shook her head. "Of course not." The teacher turned to look at the board and continued to write mathematical sums on the board. Victoria took out the slate when she saw everyone writing on theirs.

As she started copying everything down on the slate, she heard someone trying desperately to grab her attention. She groaned and turned around when she saw that he wasn't going to stop anytime soon.

"What is it?" Victoria hissed at the boy who was annoying her. The boy merely smiled.

"Welcome to Avonlea, your Majesty." He said with a smile as he winked at her. Victoria responded with an exaggerated eye roll in his direction to make sure that he saw it which caused some of the other boys to snicker.
