《Insane》Chapter 7

"And you're absolutely sure that you don't know who might've done this?" the police asked me again. They've been recording me for about three hours. I had called the police when I saw that body, and, surprisingly, he didn't appear. It was either as if he didn't think I would call it, or......he let me. He probably knew I wouldn't tell the police that I knew it was him.
I sighed. "Yes, I don't know who could've killed Louise." He and another officer standing by the door exchanged glances, then sighed, too.
"You know, Alice, we......the police thought that.....it might be the person who....who attacked you." Good guess, man. Good guess. But, for all I know, he might be listening now. If I told them, he could kill me. End my life in a split second, just as he said.
"I-it probably isn't. I mean, what are the chances that he's even in town?" I laughed nervously. They noticed this. The policeman sat down across from me, and looked at me very seriously.
"Alice, if you know anything about this...this killer, anything at all, tell us."
"I'm telling you, I don't know!"
"Alice, did you see him since the night he attacked you?" I had half a mind to tell them the truth, but weren't they the ones who caused this? They didn't catch him the first time, how could I expect anything else now? I was threatened, for fuck's sake! A murderer was practically living with me!
"No, sir. He probably doesn't even know who I am."
"Thank you, miss. Mike, take her home." The policeman next to the door motioned for me to come with him. I did. I offered Mike some tea, but he just left. My phone rang, and I answered it.
"Alice? Oh my god, Alice, are you alright?" It was my mom.

"Hey, mom."
"Don't you 'Hey, mom.' me, Alice! What happened? How did Louise die? She was supposed to be at home!" She sounded as if she had been crying.
"Mom, I don't know. She just ended up in front of my window, and I called the police. That's all that happened."
"Oh....sorry, Alice. I can't come home today. Apparently, death of a close one isn't enough to get one day off. "
I laughed a bit. "Bye, mom. And it's ok that you can't come."
"Bye, darling." She hung up. I went to my room, and realized that I hadn't had a bit of sleep for a whole day. I went to bed, and had a bit of sleep. I woke up a few hours later, and made myself some lunch, since it's about noon. Since I don't know how the fuck to cook, I made myself a sandwich. It was so long since I had had such a peaceful time. All because of him. I heard breathing behind me, and winced. I was even more scared of him now since he showed exactly what he could do.
"You shouldn't have called the police, Alice." he growled.
"There was a corpse hanging in front of my fucking window. What the hell was I supposed to do, offer it tea and cupcakes? Maybe talk about politics? That shit's been going down in the past time, anyways." I said.
"Since when would you know about politics?"
"Oh, sorry. Am I supposed to be a slut who only knows about boys? Hell no. If you haven't noticed, I don't have too many fucking friends, so I make the most out of my time by trying to learn new things."
He chuckled. "Wow. I'm impressed. Well, live smart, die young, make a pretty corpse."

My hands went up to my neck. "Are you here to tell me again how you are a ruthless killer and enjoy my fear, or did you want to say something?" I turned around to actually see him. He brought his knife out.
"As I told you, it was a wrong move to call the police. They could've had me, you know. What a shame that would've been, eh? But I guess I could spare you, since you didn't tell them who the culprit actually was." So he was there. In a moment, the tip of the knife was pointed at my neck.
"Pull off another thing like that, though, and it'll be the last thing you'll do." Moments like these showed me how crazy the guy actually was.
"Oh, so you're actually threatening me now? I can't believe it. First you place that corpse there, then you expect me to just go to sleep, thinking about ponies and rainbows? I mean, seriously? What the fuck, man? At least try to predict what could happen. Try to use whatever brains haven't been ruined by insanity."
He suddenly lowered the knife, his eyes had a blank look instead of the insanity that was usually seen. He looked confused, and a bit lost in thought, as if what I had just said had triggered something inside him. He stayed like that for a few seconds, then put his hands on his head, shaking it, as if he was trying to shake something out. "No, no, no, no, NO! It isn't real! They're lying!" he said to no one in particular, then ran out the door. I was standing there, confused. I didn't give it too much thought, and just went on my computer to watch a few YouTube clips. When it became late, I went to bed. My brain then went on overdrive mode. Who was he talking about? Who were 'they'? I wonder if I'll ever know.

I wrote this when I was 16/17 (which was many years ago now!) on a really old PC I called Phylis. I remember having to print it out on an old ribbon printer to submit it to publishers - this was back before esubs were the norm! It never got picked up and I ended up self publishing it. I hope you enjoy.
