《Whodunnit ?》Chapter 30 - The Birds & The Bees

When the final four stepped outside. They all noticed about 40+ massive, wooden bee houses. This intrigued the guests, who had no idea how this was relevant.
"My dear guests, I will now read the riddle."
"Forty-one of these houses stand before me,
But only five hold the clue which reveals the key.
This key? Holds all the answers to your impending questions.
And reveals my ever longing aggressions,
To kill you all in the most hideous of ways.
Tell me, friends, can you make it through this maze?"
The final four each quickly realised what they needed to do. They needed to reach into the bee houses to find a key which would reveal their next clue.
Nelson & Brianna quickly scurried to the back of the maze of bee houses, thinking it was logical to start at the back and then work their way forwards.
Meanwhile, Reynold & Michelle started at the front of the maze, thinking it was logical in their mind to start at the front then work backward.
-
"This is so gross." Brianna's voice was hardly audible over the protective gear which covered her face as she talked to Nelson.
Nelson was definitely creeped out as well. He didn't like the idea of reaching into a bees house, filled with hundreds of the unforgiving insects. And also the copious amounts of sticky honey which was sticking to their protective gloves.
After making sure to thoroughly search, Nelson & Brianna excluded the first three bee houses they searched and looked through.
"Surely it can't be this hard?" Nelson queried to Brianna as they started to search through the fourth bee house.
"Well, there's like fifty of these things. And only five hold the keys." The Olympian reminded the charity worker how there were only a few houses which actually held the keys.
-
Meanwhile, Reynold & Michelle were less scared about reaching into the bee houses. Yes, the insects still scared the two of them, but they didn't want that factor to slow them down in winning the game. Because they knew that if Brianna & Nelson solved the riddle, one of them would be the next person killed.
It didn't take long for Reynold to pull out a key from the sixth bee house they looked through.

"I've got it!" Reynold celebrated as he took off back inside the Manor, Michelle quickly followed right behind him.
Once the two alliance members were back inside Rue Manor. They made sure to scrub off the seemingly endless amounts of honey which was attached to the key and reach the text which was scribed on it.
"Geraga"
"What does that mean?" Reynold queried to Michelle.
"How would I know?" Michelle said back bluntly to Reynold's face once she glanced over at the still slightly sticky, key.
After a few moments of silent staring at the key, Michelle had a eureka moment.
"Have you tried spelling it out backward. It could make a word!" Michelle knew that in her head it made sense to spell the word out backward, and see if it revealed some sort of clue.
Reynold grabbed a piece of paper and a pen from the great room and spelled the unfamiliar word out backward.
"Agareg"
"That kind of looks like agar. You know agar jelly? The stuff they use in labs and all that?" Michelle noticed how the word spelled out backward did sound a lot like the word, agar.
Reynold was very familiar with agar in his daily life. Being a doctor, he often used agar jelly to disclose a bacteria or parasite on the dish of an agar jelly. But he knew that through his time in Rue Manor, he never saw anything which was related to agar, let alone agar jelly itself.
The two alliance members decided to start looking for agar jelly somewhere in the manor. And the most obvious place for them which made the most sense was the morgue.
-
About twenty minutes after Reynold & Michelle found their key, Nelson & Brianna finally found their first key. Just like the other two guests, they scurried back inside the manor and stalled in the great room.
Brianna quickly put the word backward but didn't make the connection with agar.
From that point onwards, Nelson & Brianna stood in the great room, very confused as of what their next move would be.
-
Michelle & Reynold had been in the morgue for quite a while at this point. And they had still yet to find any agar jelly at all.

"We must be looking at this in the wrong way," Reynold concluded as he continued to search in the cold morgue beds.
"Let's just write down the word again." Michelle made the next move and retrieved the piece of paper and pen that Reynold used from her bee suit pocket.
After writing down the unfamiliar word again. both of the alliance members kicked themselves. After a little bit of unscrambling, they quickly realised that the word was Garage. And that the key they had in their hand had to of fit into the Garage's key slot.
The two quickly scaled the stairs and charged for the great room, to go out the back of the manor and run to the garage. However, they had a problem.
Brianna & Nelson were standing right in their path. Once climbing the stairs back to the great room, Michelle & Reynold had to shield themselves as their two rivals were getting dangerously close to figuring out what the scrambled word on the key actually meant. They even heard Nelson bring up the possibility of Garage at one point.
"Idiots" Reynold giggled slightly.
"How are we going to get past them?" Michelle whispered to Reynold as she hid behind him.
Reynold tried to rack an idea around his brain. He quickly got one. "We'll throw something off the wall, distract them!"
Michelle gave a quick nod in agreement before stepping aside so that Reynold could grab one of the taller and more heavier clocks in the great room. With a heavy pull, the 1920's style clock fell off the wall. And with a smash, it hit the floor. The noise immediately alerted Nelson & Brianna, and they came running in the clocks direction.
Hastily running past their past alliance members, Nelson & Brianna unknowingly gave Reynold & Michelle enough time to run into the kitchen, and escape into the back-garden in hopes to get to the Rue Manor garage.
-
"Put the key in," Michelle ordered Reynold on what to do the minute they arrived at the garage.
Upon putting the key in, and simply lifting up, the garage door opened slowly. Revealing the same large vehicle that Reynold saw in the mystery area's CCTV footage.
"Was this the car you were talking about earlier?" Michelle wondered if the car in front of them was the same car that Reynold had talked about after the investigation stage of the game.
Reynold simply nodded before approaching the car.
It didn't take long for the alliance members to notice a few blood drops on the hood of the car.
"So was he run over while trapped?" Michelle asked.
"I think so." Reynold confidently nodded. However, even though Reynold knew this, he knew Dan couldn't have died from being hit by the car. It was way to obvious, and he knew it wasn't the killers style.
Reynold and Michelle climbed into the car. And the sat-nav system sprung into life. Once again (just like in Greg's case) ARKON was used for the route. They both noticed how the route started at the garage, then went on to the little side path of Rue Manor, did a circulation and then returned back to the garage.
"Is that it?" Michelle questioned. She was definitely confused as of what caused the allergic reaction that Reynold was so confident of.
Suddenly, a small note fell from the glove compartment. Reynold adjusted in his seat before picking up the note.
"Clementine"
"That's strange." Reynold furrowed his eyebrows at the peculiar note. He didn't know what clementine had to do with the case at all. He knew that clementine was a popular name for children of today, but other than that. He couldn't think of anything else which was to do with clementine.
Michelle however had another idea about the word. "There's clementine oranges."
Reynold gave a nod. "That's definitely a good idea. There was orange trees in the crime scene as well right?"
"Yeah." Michelle said.
Suddenly, the Rue Manor bell rung. And the riddle was over. Reynold & Michelle still were a bit hazy on some parts of the crime but they knew they knew a lot more than Brianna & Nelson. They were confident that one of them would be the next person to die.

8 142Beyond the Bridge
There are many worlds, many multiverses, and you can move between them via the Federation's Bridge network - magical gateways to other worlds. The world dubbed "C'thon" by its inhabitants - or Gamma-Theta-Nu-649, if you ask the Federation's bureaucracy - was deserted when the Federation found it. The "civilized" races had all died out centuries prior, and the wilderness had grown downright feral in their absence. Now, the lonely Federation outpost of Bridgetown is under constant threat from the hungry wildlife, malicious fey, territorial goblins, and wandering undead that surround it. The town's distance from the Federation's centers of power means that it gets precious few of the resources that it needs to stay safe and afloat. Enter the Guild of Adventurers, a plucky and disparate crew who do the Federation's dirty work in exchange for coin. One team, the first of many, crosses the Bridge to C'thon looking for fame, fortune, and (if they're lucky) the answer to a newly-discovered Prophecy. They'll get much more than they bargained for, although first they need to avoid being eaten by the local wildlife. Updates weekly on Wednesday. Chapters will be as long as they need to be for them to work, which means they can vary. If anything drops below 2500 words, I'll post an extra chapter if I have one ready. [PS: This is not a litRPG, but I do borrow heavily from TTRPGs for inspiration, and the general setting and storyline is from a TTRPG campaign I'm running.] [PPS: This is my first attempt at writing long-form fiction. I'm not trying to make a great piece of literature or have a multi-novel overarching plot, but hopefully it'll still be a fun story - let me know what you think in the comments.] [PPPS: Cover image is from a free-download wallpaper by Tyler Edlin; I do not own it, and will take it down immediately if requested.]
