《A Dragon Rider's Element》Me and My Shadow ( 49 )

I woke up to the cold cropper taste of blood. My body ached and I opened my eyes, looking into the dim-lit ruins of the tome clouded by layers of dust. I coughed as I breathed in the thick dust. Everything hurt when my body shook violently.
I recollected myself and tried to stand. I failed and only managed to get on my hands and knees. The effort made me breathe heavy which made me cough again, causing more pain.
When the pain passed I looked around the ruins in the hope of finding someone. In the dim light, it was hard so I tried to lit my fire, but my power failed me when I bearly managed an ember.
I forced myself to stand and I painful did. I cursed to myself as I limped across the uneven stone and marble chucks that were once a floor.
I called out into the darkness for the others but I dreaded the answer of silence.
While I limped along I stepped on a weak chuck of stone and it gave under my feet. My already weak ankles rolled and I fell cutting my hands as I attempted to cushioned my fall.
I cursed as I tried to stand again, only to fail. However, from my new angle, I saw a hand sticking out in the rumble.
Fearing it was one of my friends I rushed over to them, ignoring the pain. They were covered in dust and rumble. I quickly dug and pulled the rocks away.
After pulling away, a large rock I was met with a pale and unconscious Ophelia.
Her helmet and armor were cracked beyond reasons and she was covered in her black blood. I know she's my enemy but looking down at her, helpless and bloody, I felt bad for her. I reached down and felt for a pulse.
I could feel the slow and faint rhythm of her heartbeat. My fingers rested on her neck while I let out a sigh.
Then Ophelia's eyes shot open and grabbed my hand that was resting on her neck. I didn't have time to react before she got up and pushed me onto my back. Her hands were instantly around my neck. I gasped for air as she straddled me.

Her silver-gray eyes were bloodshot and bloodthirst as she glared down at me with a wicked grin.
"It will be an honor to give Lord Zeref your head", She laughed.
I crawled at her hands trying to pry them off, but I failed as I struggled under her. I tried to summon my fire but I was too weak and it died from my lack of oxygen. I fought back against her death grip as my vision hazed and black spot clouded my vision.
I dropped my right hand and searched the ground for anything heavy enough to hurt her. My hand found a large chunk of rock. I gripped it and crashed it into Ophelia's skull.
She rolled off of me and I rolled on top of her then pinned her under me. Adrenaline rushed through me as I smashed the rock into Ophelia's face. I lost myself as I stuck her again... and again until she was still.
I returned as huffed breathlessly. My hands were covered in black blood and Ophelia's face was unrecognizable. I dropped the bloody rock and scrambled off of her. I fell and hated myself as I stared at the lifeless body before me.
I covered my mouth as water graced my cheeks. I muttered a hopeless apology that only I bore witness to.
A familiar voice in my head pulled me back to reality.
"Larisa!", Athena called.
"Athena?"
"Thank the stars. As soon as you enter the portal I lost all contact with you. I only regained shortly after the ground collapsed. Are you alright?"
"I'm as fine as I can be right now. Where are you now?"
"I'm with Raikou on top of a large golfball."
"The others?"
"We were separate."
"What happened?"
"Shortly after you left Strom turned on us. I was his target and I was unable to defend myself. Raikou stopped before the injures became, however, he was greatly injured in the process. He will not be flying anytime soon. So when the ground collapsed he couldn't fly away."
"And you wouldn't leave him."

"Yes. I carried him here, but the others were lost in the chaos. I'm sorry."
" It's okay. Stay where you are, Raikou needs you. I'll be fine."
"What will you do?"
"I'm going to find his rider."
Athena wished me luck as I stood and made my way threw the rocky ruins.
It wasn't long before I found signs of my blonde lightning boy. The golden glitz of his deadly spear guided me in the darkness.
Ty was nowhere near but the trail of smeared blood made it clear someone was dragged through here. I picked up the spear from the rubble and followed the trail.
A distant light marked my path when I got closer I heard the hisses and growls of multiple Askari. I peeked out from the rumble to just catch several Askari enter a set of metal doors. In bright red letters, a sign on the front of the door read: Storage BT-274.
Before the door closed completely shut I hoped over my cover and looked through the crack.
The room was brightly lit by overhanging shop lights. Cage like storage units lined the side walls. In the closest one to the door sat Alex and Roy, both were gagged and tied to one other, but they seemed fine.
I finched when a pained scream echoed from the room. I pushed my luck and opened the door a little farther.
I bite my tongue to keep myself from crying at the new sight before me.
Ty and Sardis were both chained up by their hands to the back wall. Both were in cover in sweat and blood with exhausted looks on their faces. However, it seemed Sardis had passed out or at least far passed the point to form full sentences.
Zeref's laugh froze me as he walked into my view and stood in front of Ty with a drill in hand.
"I've always been a traditionist but today's tools just makes this so much fun", He laughed as he spun the drill and drove it between Ty's ribs. I gasped and pulled back, but my noise was drowned out by Ty's screams.
Even with through the metal doors I could still hear Ty's cries and Zeref's laughs.
I couldn't move until his cries stopped. I opened the door slowly once more while I tried to form a plan, but my heart stopped when I saw what Zeref was now holding. A pair of black and red Linesman pliers.
Zeref ranched up and gapped Ty's right hand that was chained above him. He tried to pull away but his strength had all but left him.
Zeref set the pliers under Ty's fingers nails and pull agonizing slowly. Ty cried out desperately as his nail gave.
"One down nine to go", Zeref laughed.
Ty had no strength to answer as Zeref moved on to the next finger.
I had no plan but I couldn't let him continue to torture Ty. I crept into the room, Ty's wails hiding my footsteps. I had my way over to Roy and Alex who had yet to notice see for their eyes were glued to Ty.
"That's nine."
The cage they were in was locked and I couldn't free them without alerting the Askari. I tried to think but my thoughts were scrambled and tears fell as Zeref's voice rang out again.
"Eight."
All I heard was Ty as I clutched his spear in hands.
"Seven."
I prayed to anyone who would listen while Zeref continued his countdown.
"Six."
I felt the heavy spear grow hot in my hands.
"Five."
I looked down and saw it was encased in white light.
"Four."
The spear began to pulse with power.
"Three."
I stood up from my hiding place. My body knowing what to do before my mind could catch up.
"Two."
No one noticed me as all their eyes were on Ty. But the room was silent as two exhausted electric blue eyes fell on me. Then he smirked weakly.
"On-"
Before Zeref could finish the last number I threw the spear with everything I had. The spear hit its mark with destructive power and suck itself into Zeref's back and pierced his chest.

The Chronicles of Artharian Dagworth
Back in 2020 there were many theories on how the world would end. From the many religions apocalypses, nuclear wars that would leave the planet inhabitable, global warming doing the same, biological weapons getting out of control, viruses mutating into unstoppable diseases to the dead raising to prey on humanity, either due to a virus or just because hell filled up. Also, aliens, from the war mongering kind to the ones so advanced they didn’t see us as more than worms. And of course there was the fail proof theory that the world would end when the sun died. In a bunch of billion years give or take. Althougth some new scientist were discussing if the end would be on the take side, since when the sun started dying things would go haywire on the entire solar system and we would collide with mercury or maybe mars way before the expanding sun engulfed earth. But I digress… Now, those were the mainstream theories that the everyday Joe, who didn’t know the big secret, worried about. So, if you were to ask me which theory was correct I can tell you that I haven’t seen any little green man, at least not from another planet, and so far the sun is still shining, although it’s been only 9 years since everything went to hell, not the few billions (give or take) the scientist predicted, so that one isn’t ruled out yet. These two aside, I'd say all of them. Hey everyone, this is my first attempt at writing. I have been planning to do it for a really long time, and while this is not the one epic fantasy idea I ever wanted to write, I think it's a good one. The plan is to write an end of the world urban-fantasy series. Think a world like Dresden Files, Alex Verus, Iron druid, where magic is real but exist hidden from society meets the apocalypse. It will be written in first person in the Dresden Files style, no plans for other POV for now. As you probally alredy guessed from my style, english is not my first langague, so while google corrector helps, expect grammar errors, and I'd be gratefull for anyone to point them. I plan to write 2 to 3 chapters a week, 2000-4000 words each. Might change as I get more experience and depends on my free time. Cover image from the colections of getwallpapers.com
