《The Other Side Of The Lens》07. He's Outside

Waking up on Saturday is the best. I get to sleep in, not worry about school, and most of the time I don't have to go out because Alison comes over or I go to her house.

As I rub my eyes with the back of my hand, I grab my phone off my night stand and look at the time. I read that it says 1:27 in the afternoon. This week was really tiring since teachers started passing out more work.

I click on my messages to see that I have multiple from Alison.

I read the message in confusion and continue reading the others.

Oh gosh. What did I forget? I click on her messages because I clearly don't remember what today is. Was today our bestie trip to the thrift store? No, it can't be she would've already been pounding on my door so I can wake up.

I sent her a quick message letting her know I am awake and I did not forget about today.

*beep*

I rolled my eyes at the message and continued reading other messages and my eyes widened as I read a message from Mateo.

THAT'S WHAT TODAY WAS! Oh gosh how could I forget. I type a quick reply so he doesn't think I'm going to bail on him.

I literally don't know how I forgot. Maybe I should stop blaming my tiredness on school and blame it on myself. Last night I decided to stay up and watch all episodes of season two of Grey's Anatomy. It was worth it though to say the least.

*beep*

Well good to know he doesn't sound upset over text.

I send him my address and put my phone back down on my night stand and just look up at my ceiling. Freshman me would never believe me if I told her I was going to hangout with Mateo. Maybe I should get out and have breakfast. I get up from my very comfortable bed and make my way downstairs.

As I'm walking down the stairs I hear Mom talking to someone. I wonder who it is. What if it's Christopher. When I'm on the last steps I stop for a minute not knowing if I should risk being seen. I stop overthinking when I hear the deep voice that belongs to my Dad.

I walk into the kitchen and see Mom and Dad sitting by the island we have in there.

"Buenos Días Vero," Dad tells me with a smile I have missed seeing. Mom just smiles at me and I smile back.

"Good Morning Dad, I thought you were going to work today," I say with a hint of curiosity in my tone.

"Well I got the day off today. Why do you want me to go back to the hospital? I can if yo-,"

"No Dad I was just asking," I playfully rolled my eyes at him and he chuckled.

"I was just asking since you've been working a lot of hours at the Hospital lately," I clarify what I was trying to originally say.

He just smiles at me and looks down at his phone. I decided not to ask him anything anymore since it isn't my business. I make my way to get some cereal. I pull out Cinnamon Toast Crunch my absolute fav and take it to the island where I pour some in a bowl with milk and sit down to eat.

I didn't want to tell Mom about hanging out with Mateo in front of Dad. Since Dad usually spends most of his time working at the hospital I don't really talk to him that much. I don't mind, I know he loves doing what he does. But sometimes I can't stop the thought that he likes to spend more time at work than here.

I turn to face Mom and decide to put my big girl pants and just ask her. I am 17 years old after all. Just a few more months till I turn 18, which is scary. Why can't we all stay the age we want to be. Anyways enough of that let me just get this over with.

"Mom, I uh, wanted to ask you if it's okay that I go out with a friend today," I say down at my cereal bowl knowing both of my parents are looking at me.

"That's fine sweetie. Who's this friend," she says and I hear Dad clear his throat next to her.

I know I can just lie to them and say that I'm hanging out with Alison but I have always told my Mom ahead of time when I'm going out with Ali.

"You remember how I told you about Mateo? Well he asked me if I wanted to hangout with him and I said yes," I finally take a glance at my parents and see Mom smiling while Dad has a serious face.

"Go ahead Vero, just make sure your phone is charged and don't arrive home after 12," I nod and smile at her. Dad doesn't say anything he just looks back down at his phone doing whatever he's doing.

I wonder why he didn't say anything.

Once I'm finished with my cereal I put my bowl in the sink and head back up to my room. Time to see what I'm going to wear. It usually takes a good hour and a half to get ready, and that's not counting the extra 30 minutes it takes me to pick out an outfit.

I grab my phone from the night stand and take a seat on the bean bag I have in the corner of my room. It's barely 2:30pm so I decided to just be on my phone for 10 more minutes than I'm going to hop into the shower.

After the 10 minutes are up I grab my towels and make my way to the restroom. I turn on the water and wait a few seconds for it to warm up, when it's warm enough I step into the shower and close my eyes.

The hot water is so relaxing it makes me just want to crawl back into bed and take a nap. I open my eyes and start washing my hair with my grapefruit scented shampoo and conditioner and continue with the rest of my shower routine.

When I'm done I wrap a towel around my body and walk out the bathroom and head straight back to my room. I make my way up to my closet and open it to find out what I'm going to wear.

I finally decided on a simple outfit which consists of light blue baggy jeans, a beige crew neck, and my beige high top Converse to match the crew neck.

After I'm done changing into my outfit, I take a seat at my vanity and start doing my hair. Since my hair is sort of wavy it has its days where it wants to look wavy and today is not that day. So I just take out my blow dryer brush and curl my hair.

For makeup, I really don't put on a lot. I fill in my eyebrows, put on some mascara, and some lip gloss and I'm done.

By the time I'm done it's 4:30pm, so I grab the remote to the TV and sit back down on the bean bag and put on Grey's while I wait for Mateo to get here. What's surprising me is that I'm not really nervous, I mean it is a hangout and this will help us get to know each other more.

Halfway through an episode my phone vibrates and I unlock it to read the message. Now the nerves are starting to kick in.

He's outside. Oh gosh he's outside my house. I stand up and look in the mirror to make sure I look okay. Once I give myself the okay I turn off the TV and start walking out my room and down the stairs.

"Mom," I called out. "I'll be back later,"

"Okay be careful please," she shouts back from the kitchen.

"I always am," and with that I start walking out the door.

I step outside and close the door behind me and look up to see a nice black truck with a very attractive guy leaning on it.

"Hello," I tell him with a smile as I start getting closer.

"Hey, you look nice," he smiles looking down at me which causes me to look somewhere while my cheeks heat up.

"Not bad yourself," I tell him as I look at his outfit. He's wearing a grey long sleeve that accentuates his chest, blue jeans, and white Nikes.

"So are you ready to go?" he asks me as I look back up at him.

"Yes, but you never told me where we're going," I wondered.

"We're going to play laser tag," he exclaims as he starts walking to the drivers side.

Oh no.
