《Incandescent》Chapter 10

The biker on the floor had crawled over to his gun and aimed the bullets right at us, then he pulled the trigger with the intent of administering death. The first shot doesn't hit us, but more bullets are fired as the bikes friends hear commotion outside their bar and start rushing out the doors to investigate.

"Shit, let's go!" Blake screams as he jumps onto the bike. Explosions bellow out from behind us as shots are fired through the night and I scramble onto the bike behind Blake with barely functioning limbs. I secure my hands around Blake's waist like an iron lock and tuck my head into Blake's back as if to hide from the gun shots. My muscles were cramped up in preparation to being implanted with a bullet.

Blake revs the engine and we whiz off at a speed that should have killed us, the wind whips my hair behind me from the sudden acceleration. The bike's wheels spin and slide in the water on the road as it tries to grip onto the slippery surface below, but our poor control helped us evade the gun shots as they fired at us from behind. I felt a rush of wind whip past my face and then a stab of pain on my cheek as a bullet passes not millimeters away from my face, cutting a small sliver of my skin. After a few too long seconds we skid around the corner as we finally move out of the firing line and I relax into Blake's form as I realise I wasn't hit.

Panic caused my hands to grab onto Blake and I was squeezing him so hard I was surprised if he was able to breathe in any oxygen. But he doesn't complain and continues to drive like a manic until we were out of the town limits and in the middle of the surrounding woods. Only when he was sure we were alone does he decrease the acceleration on the engine. The rain was now bucketing down and Blake and I were nearly glued together. We gradually roll to a stop and Blake switches the engine off. I tried to move off the bike and away from Blake, but my hands refused to move, I was still in shock.

Blake looks back at me from over his shoulder to see that I was in no fit state to move myself, so he gently pries my hands from around his waist. I stumble off the bike and use the stump of a tree to steady my feet as I take deep calming breaths. Blake stabilises the bike and hesitantly walk over towards me.

"Are you okay?" He asks gingerly reaching a hand out towards me but stops just short of touching me, letting it drop to his side.

"I am fine," I breathe, surprised that my voice actually works. I shake my arms and legs out to realise that I was having difficulty moving them. "Well actually I think my limbs are in a permanent state of paralysis and I wouldn't be surprised if I have peripheral neuropathy." My voice was gradually becoming filled with panic and taking a louder tone. "What the hell just happened?" I am now yelling as the hysteria finally takes hold.

"Rose," Blake gently spoke, and I was able to tune out the panicked thoughts whirling through my mind to completely listen to him. "You need to leave now," he commanded.

My mind didn't comprehend what he was saying until I actually looked around to where he had taken me to realise that this was the trail that lead to my street. I was only a five-minute walk away from home. When my wide eyes glanced back to Blake I finally grasped what state he was in, blood was dripping down from a gaping gash in his forehead from when he was thrown to the floor and his white t-shirt had now turned red from the emerging blood from underneath where he must have been shot.

"You are shot," I panicked, reaching towards his chest and shoulders where the blood was pooling. But Blake flinched away from me violently and placed his hands out in front of him to keep me away.

"I am fine, he just hit my arm," he tried to assure me, but I wasn't assured. He grasped his shirt and pulled it tighter around his wound as if he just realised it was there himself.

"Blake," I object in worry, he is not fine, and I wasn't going to stand around and just let him run off without properly treating it.

"Just go!" He snapped pointing towards the trail away from him and towards my home. The glare he set on me was something to rival that of Sarah's.

His anger sparked my own. How dare he become angry at me when he was the one who got himself into that position and I was just helping him.

"Blake," I declare his name to gain his full attention and his fierce eyes glide to mine. "I just found you stealing a bike and being beaten up by a biker who turned a gun on you." I speak slowly to reiterate the absolute madness of the situation that he was just in.

"What the hell was that about? You nearly got yourself killed just to steal a bike?" I yell harshly, the unbelief clouding my tone.

Blake shuffles his feet and digs the toe of his shoe into the floor, scraping a leaf into the ground. He was trying to avoid my eyes as he ran his hands through his dripping dark hair. I was staring at him in disbelief, I couldn't believe that this guy who was living in my house was soul intent on killing himself. Finally, his eyes lift up to meet my own disappointment ridden ones and this seems to send a flare of emotion running through him because he then snaps back at me.

"What were you even doing there?" He accuses me with a dark tone and taking a step towards me.

"Saving your life apparently," I sass back placing a hand on my hip. His blue eyes darkened as they squinted and narrowed at me.

"You were reckless, you nearly died getting yourself involved." He squares up as he towers over me. He was trying to turn this argument around onto me, I wasn't having any of it. I take a step closer to him and lift my chin up as I stare him down.

"And if I didn't you would be dead, and not to mention the fact that you would be dead." He levels my glare back at me.

"I had it handled," he protested crossing his arms across his chest. The strength of his glare made me feel like I was the idiot who interfered on a perfectly executed plan.

"Well it didn't look like that to me, what I saw was you being choking to death by the hands of a very large human that would probably be able to kill Godzilla, by the way." I gave him a flat look which he returns.

"You don't know anything," he implored menacingly.

"Well then tell me," I stomp my foot in defiance, I was sick of his secrets. His features turn impassive, he wasn't telling me anything,

"You need to stay away from me and if you ever see that again you need to stay the hell away," he barked. His eyes trying to convey something important to me. I wanted him to tell me what is was and I realised yelling at him wasn't working.

"Blake you can trust me, just please tell me what is going on with you," I speak softly and gently place my hand onto his forearm. He stares down at my arm for a long time and his harsh features smooth out and soften as he does. He seemed to make a decision as his eyes lift up to mine but a shock runs through me as I see the ice embedded there.

"It is none of your business," he snaps and yanks his hand out from under mine. Disappointment flows through me and my hand drops my my side like it had lost its way.

"Well I think it is, given I nearly died." I throw my hands up in the air in frustration.

"It is none of your business," he repeated and then turned his back on me as he walked back over to his bike. I knew then that there was no persuading him otherwise, he had made his decision. But what now? I can't just go home and pretend this never happened, I just witnessed a crime.

"I have to tell the police about this," I whispered under my breath speaking my thoughts aloud. Blake stops dead in his tracks and when he spins around on his heel to storm over towards me I actually feel a stab of fear from the deadly look on his face. He breaks to a holt right in front of me and glowers down at me with a look that made me want to crawl underneath the moss-covered rock beside me and hide from him forever.

"No, you won't," he growled darkly. I refused to bow down to him.

"Why not?" I object right back. His hands were at fists at his side as he stood over me.

"Because if you tell the police, then I will go to jail. And you know I don't deserve to go to jail and have my life ruined over stealing a bike." He was right, and he knew it. As much as I hated Blake being this person that was reckless and dangerous, I didn't want him in prison. I needed to think of another way to knock sense into him.

"Fine I won't tell the police on one condition," I start, and he looks at me distrusting. "You answer one question." He doesn't object and I realised that was permission to ask the question I have been dying to know since the moment I met him.

"Why are you doing this?" I challenged. He stares straight into my eyes with a stark intensity. As I stared transfixed back at him I could see the turmoil and pain in his eyes like whatever thought was in there was eating him up inside and tearing up every other piece of life and normality he has.

"Because I can't die without knowing the truth," he spoke his words with conviction. And as I stared deeply into his eyes I released that this was probably the first truly honest thing Blake has ever spoke to me. Even though I didn't know just exactly what that meant, he did confirm one thing.

Blake was up to something and I realised tonight just how dangerous his mission is. And because of it he is not just going to get himself killed, but also me. Because there was no way I was allowing him to face this darkness alone.
