It had been determined that Jackie was having a boy and she was going to name him Patrick Bouvier Kennedy. Audrey was also having a boy and she would name him Sean Hepburn Ferrer. Grace was having a girl and was going to name her Stéphanie Marie Elisabeth Rainier.

3 months later, on August 7, 1963, Jackie was bringing Caroline and John to her horse riding lessons when she was suddenly paralyzed by pains in her back and stomach. She immediately alerted Clint Hill. While driving, Clint nervously looked at Jackie who looked panic stricken. Jackie looked up at him said "Please drive quicker Mr. Hill!". They finally got to the hospital and Jack wasn't there yet. She had Patrick Bouvier Kennedy five and a half weeks early. He had hyaline membrane disease, which is a respiratory ailment. Jack goes back and forth from Jackie, who was stranded in Cape Cod, and Patrick, who was in Boston. On his second day of being alive, Jack visits his son. He knew that Patrick wouldn't survive much longer. Jack held Patrick as he took his last breaths. He stopped breathing, and Jack knew that he was gone. He cried as the doctors took Patrick away. Jack went to where Jackie was. He walked into her room, to find her sleeping peacefully. Was he really going to ruin it like this? He knew that she had to find out eventually. He held her hands and cried. He rested his head on her shoulder. She woke up and could immediately sense that something was wrong. "Jackie." Jack said softly, "Patrick didn't make it. He is in heaven now." Jackie started crying and so did Jack. They cried together and fell asleep together.

Everyone was devastated. Especially Jackie. Jackie fell into a state of depression. She spent two weeks on Aristotle Onassis' yacht, The Christina, and Jack let her because he was desperate for her to be happy again. And it worked. When she came back, she was happy again, but had bad nightmares about losing her children.

3 weeks later, Audrey had Sean Hepburn Ferrer. He was perfectly healthy. A week after Sean was born, Grace had Stéphanie Marie Elisabeth Rainier. She had breathing problems when she was born, and had to stay in the hospital for 5 extra days. She quickly recovered and went home. Jackie was very happy for both of them. She was also happy that she had John Jr. and Caroline. Losing Patrick had brought Jackie and Jack closer than ever before. Jack had never publicly displayed any affection toward Jackie. But now, he did. He held her hand, hugged, and kissed her in public. This made Jackie very happy because it was what she wanted all along.
