《Nightwalker》Chapter Forty-Two

We walked into a large room that had the back wall and part of the two other walls beside it made of windows showing the expansive forested land around us. In the middle of the room was a large table and I was amazed by the sight of the intricate carvings that literally came out of the table in a physical representation of the fairy realm.

What saddened me though was that, though most of the table and the trees that are on the table which glow a bright green, a large amount that is easily over a quarter of the table was a dark, dead blackish purple. I could obviously tell that's where the orcs have successfully taken over.

"Oh my god!" Georgia exclaimed a hand quickly covering her mouth as she walked to the deadened part of the table looking horrified.

The king sighed. "It's gotten worse since I came in last night."

"They're taking over incredibly fast." Ashwini murmured walking to stand beside Georgia looking down at the table where it was the blackest, the trees that were there now no longer. "Is this where the gate is? Where they started their attack?" She asked looking up at the king.

"Yes." He answered bluntly with a nod.

Ashwini closed her eyes a hand hovering over the black patch. "Vekhat athihar (present vision)" She muttered lowly and I felt a surge in her mana. Mana started to spill from her down turned palm before spilling out into a round white plate that encompassed the darkest part of the table.

"Look." Ashwini told us while opening her eyes her hand still outstretched. We gathered around the table and I'm pretty sure everyone gasped at what they saw. Inside the thin plate of white mana, was the horrifying sight of a land of death covered in tents made out of animal skins and bones while grotesque humanoid beings walked around large fires that peppered the black land.

"They're killing everything..." Beatrice murmured pain clear in her voice. I stepped closer to her an urge to protect making both parts of my soul work together. I felt like growling in a protective warning but swallowed it knowing that it wasn't necessary because we were surrounded by friends.

"We have to stop this as soon as possible." Georgia stated her hands dropping from her mouth to grip at the table causing indents to appear on the edge of the wood.

The king placed a hand on her shoulder in a calming manner. "We will butterfly, we will."

"Do you have a plan?" Ashwini asked dropping her hand but keeping the vison plate up showing the orcs encampment.

"Can you show us the gate?" The king asked. Ashwini nodded and made a pulling motion with her right hand.

The image in the plate changed to show an opening in a cove connected to one of the few mountains in this realm. The opening of the cave was incredibly dark, darker than should be natural especially when there were fires on each side of the opening that would have lit up the inside of the cave at least even a bit. But no the cave was insistently black.

I leant forward in disbelief when the black cave opening shimmered like liquid before a large grey skinned orc with large tusks coming out of its bottom lip stepped through out of the blackness.

"That's the gate." The king answered the quiet question. "To stop this invasion we must destroy that cave."

"But it's right in the middle of the orcs camp." Georgia frowned.

"I know..." The king sighed. "It's a suicide mission but we have to get into that camp to even get close to it.

"Can't you just attack from the air?" I asked my arm wrapping around Beatrice as an instinct. I felt calmer knowing that she was beside me, knowing that I could protect her if anything were to happen. My beast soul growled happily in my mind echoing the contented feeling I had when Beatrice moved into me, accepting my arm around her.

"No, they have some kind of magic that stops any air raids being possible." The king shook his head.

"How far can you get to the camp before you're repelled?" Beatrice asked while her hand came to sit over my vest on my stomach. I felt like letting out the purr that the beast in my head was letting out.

"Close enough to at least see the cave but only as a small dot, I'm pretty sure. But they have eyes on the air at all times." He answered his eyes moving down towards her hand on my stomach. I eyed him feeling unnecessary aggressive for some reason.

"Have you tried a night raid?" Beatrice asked her hand slightly stroking the leather of my vest. It was even more calming than the effects of the necklace.

"Yes. No one returned." The king sighed.

"That's because you guys glow." I stated.

"Glow?" Beatrice asked in confusion looking at me.

I blinked at her in confusion. "You can't see it?" I asked in wonder. "The fairies. All the way here everything was glowing. The flowers, the moss, the buildings and especially the fairies. I thought everyone could see it."

Beatrice shook her head. "I knew that the flowers and moss glowed but not that the fairies do."

"But why would the orcs know that we glow when no one else does?" Georgia asked frowning.

I shrugged. "Maybe it has something to do with the magic they can somehow use."

"So how do you suggest we get into the camp without being noticed?" The king asked.

"Don't come. No fairy will be used in the initial raid of the camp." I stated bluntly. "Beatrice, Ashwini and myself will be the only ones to get into the camp. We need to figure out how to disable that shield around the camp, create a diversion to distract the guards and then your army can get in."

Everyone looked at me in surprise. "What? I've been alive for four hundred years, I've been through wars, though as a peasant and haven't remembered until recently. But I remember I was held in a war camp to help look after the soldiers when they were in my village. I was able to stay in during a few of their war meetings."

"You're four hundred years old?" The king asked in surprise.

I nodded my head. "Yeah, but I was only fully changed a few months ago."

"Don't worry father, you'll get use to her strangeness soon enough until she does something else that surprises us." Georgia joked making everyone smile softly.

"I'm not sure if that's a compliment or not." I chuckled pulling Beatrice into me more partially placing her body in front of my own, which made her shoulder and back push up against my chest.

"And you'll never know." Georgia winked at me. "But back to your plan. I think it's completely stupid."

"Oh? How come?" I asked curiously.

"Because it's completely suicidal." She stated.

"Mm, yet last time I checked we can't die." I pointed out.

"I can." Ashwini raised her hand slightly.

"That's why you'll be the one to make the diversion. Beatrice and I will drop in as close to the barrier as possible, we take out the magic orcs creating it silently while you create a distraction as far away from the gate as possible." I explained.

"There are so many holes in your plan it's not even funny." The king sighed.

"I never said I was a professional tactician." I shrugged again and found myself basically wrapped around Beatrice. I don't even know how that happened. Her back was completely pressed up against my front while my arms were wrapped around her waist keeping her close to me. Her own hands were sensually running up and down my arm much like a caress. I felt my soul purr at the affection.

I realised that I've never acted like this before, especially not with Beatrice. I'm not complaining but there must be something in this realm that's making me unable to totally hold down the affection actions that I hold for her. Maybe it's the danger and the amount of ominous feelings that were appearing inside me the longer I was here.

Either way, I love the feeling of her accepting me.

"We need to know a few things before we plan anymore." The king said finally. "We need to know who are keeping up the shields, whether it's one person or multiple. The ones who are the ones in charge. Where the sentries on lookout are around the camp. The best place, or places, to create a diversion. A way to allow my people to get in without being detected if it comes to that. And how you all will get out if things don't go as planned."

"Using the athihar we can watch how the sentries move around day and night as well as keep an eye out on the numbers of orcs that enter and leave the camp. We can also probably get a good idea on who are the leaders of the camp." Ashwini spoke up indicating the plate with a hand. "But that will take easily a couple days even a few weeks if their movements are too erratic. Plus, I can't keep up the athihar for too long or my mana will run out."

"During that time Vaden and I can go to the front line to keep the orcs back as much as possible. It'll also help us get an idea on how to kill them as quickly as possible." Beatrice agreed.

"As for you fairies and your glowing. Maybe black paint or mud will work if it's infused with magic." Ashwini suggested wonderingly.

"You still have a few people here in the capital. I'm sure some of them know at least a bit of magicks that could help make the stuff." I spoke up. "I know Divanti could be a great help. I sensed a great amount of mana and knowledge in her when I spoke to her."

"Divanti? I didn't know she was back in the village. She was my mother's royal mage who taught me how to use magicks." The king said sounding surprised but happy. "She will definitely know how to help us."

"Good, I'll go with Vaden and Beatrice to front line to help as well." Georgia decided.

"No, you'll be staying here." The king stated with a serious frown.

"What? No! I have to go father. I'm one of the best healers in the realm and you know it! I can be a great help to the injured soldiers on the front line." She argued.

"Georgia..." The king started to growl warningly.

"Having a royal on the front line can help boost morale, my lord." I cut him off remembering how the soldiers reacted when knowing one of their princes were joining them during the next battle. "I've seen it. If the soldiers see that the royal family isn't giving up and not afraid to even place themselves in harm's way, it will push the soldiers to fight harder not only for themselves but for their family too that were left behind."

The king didn't look happy but I could feel how terrified her was at the prospect of losing his only child.

"Please father, I know you're afraid for me but I'm not going to leave you. I'm not going anywhere and I'm definitely not going to follow mother. I promise you that." Georgia pleaded. "We have to show everyone that we're not giving up until those orcs are gone and punished for what they've done. They're killing our land. They're eating our people! Please father!"

The king sighed showing the turmoil he was feeling within. "Sir, I swear on my life nothing will happen to your daughter. I won't allow it." I told him seriously stepping away from Beatrice and actually kneeling down on one knee in front of the king.

"Vaden..." Georgia gasped and I'm sure they were all looking at me incredulously but I my stare was constantly on the king trying to convey to him how serious I was.

"Are you willing to swear on your blood for that promise?" The king asked.

"Father! No!" Georgia exclaimed in a panic. "Vaden stand up before you do something stupid."

"We need you, the soldiers need you on the front line and if I have to swear on my blood to get you there then so be it." I stated still not looking away from the king.

I pulled out my father's hunting knife from its sheath on my thigh and held it up to the king, its black blade gleaming in the glowing light of the sun that came through the windows making up the back wall.

The king's eyes widened at the sight of the engraved metal weapon. "I-Is that a Vojjor vishaferat (Gods weapon)?" He asked in an awed stutter.

I frowned in confusion. "A what?"

"A Vojjor vishaferat, wait, I think they're called artefacts in your realm." The king explained.

"Oh, yeah it is. It was my fathers." I smiled softly down at it though it fell slightly when I remembered the life I took with it. Sylvia...

"Are you able to do a Vojjor hethkat (God equip)?" The king asked curiously.

I frowned again. "I don't know what that is."

"Hmm, are you able to use the special power within the vishaferat?" He asked again.

I shook my head. "No. All I can do is feel the beast spirits within the blade."

"Oh! It's the rhoa az (beast blade)! That is an amazing Vojjor vishaferat! I've heard many tales about it." The king exclaimed in amazement. "It's been said that the wielder of it can take on the knowledge of the animal spirits within the blade or even shift into the beast!"

"I've only heard that I could control the spirits if I wanted to." I told him with an embarrassed shrug. "I've only wielded the blade not even a week."

"Oh yes you could possibly do that too. I've never seen it being used before so I'm not sure. That is an amazing blade Vaden, you best keep a hold of it." The king suggested seriously.

"I have used it in a way I'll never forgive myself... but it was my father's so I will never go anywhere without it." I assured him seriously. "Now, that blood promise?"

"Yes. Cut your palm with the blade and swear that you will protect my daughter at all costs." The kings amazed expression was immediately replaced with seriousness.

I lifted my left hand, palm up, and sliced the skin open with my hunting knife. Blood pooled in the small bowel of my palm. "I, Vaden, Nightwalker and servant to Lady Aviva, swear on my blood to protect your daughter, Princess Georgia, at all costs while out on the front line and in battle."

The blood in my palm glowed softly while a warmth ran up my arm and through my body. The king sighed almost like he felt it too.

"It is done. If you fail to protect my daughter your blood belongs to me." The king said seriously.

"Yes my lord." I agreed with a respectful bow of my head before standing. The wound was already healed as I licked away the blood from my palm and cleaned my knife with a piece of cloth given to me by Beatrice before sheathing it.

"You all will leave in two days." The king said next.

"I'm sorry your highness, but I think we should leave tomorrow, as soon as possible." Beatrice shook her head as I walked back to her needing to feel her close again.

"Tomorrow night. We'll travel through the night and make it to the front line by morning." Georgia agreed. "We'll start at where the most injured are and work our way along the line."

The king sighed again this time it was clear just how exhausted he was feeling at that moment. "Very well then. Orrick will show you to the dining hall where dinner will await you. I'm going to retire for the night. It has been a tiring day."

"Please sleep well father. I wish to spend some time with you tomorrow before we leave." Georgia asked him worriedly.

The king smiled softly at her before bring her into a tight hug. "I would like that my butterfly."

"May the three kings grant you rest." Ashwini bowed humbly.

"Good night your highness." I also bowed to the king.

"Sleep well my lord." Beatrice curtsied slightly with a bow of her head.

"I will see you off tomorrow night, until then you may do as you like." The king smiled at us before turning away and leaving the room. Orrick stood at the door having had waited outside while we discussed matters inside the room. I thought that was pretty silly, because what if the king was in danger by one of us? Even if his own daughter was here. Ah, doesn't matter now.

"Please, dinner is waiting in the dining hall." Orrick stepped to the side clearing the door way for us to pass, Georgia going first.

"Why did you do that Vaden?" Georgia asked as we walked back down the hallway to the stairs. "The blood promise."

"I apologise that it was against your will, but it wasn't just a promise to your father." I told her seriously. "It was also a promise to my lady. My duty is to protect what is hers. You and Beatrice are her most important people, so thus, I must protect the both of you to my last breath. That goes for you too Ash, because you're my friend and I do not wish to see you hurt either."

"Aww, thank you." Ashwini grinned before pinching my closest cheek and wiggling it strangely. I just looked at her blankly having no idea why she was doing that. "Damn, you're not cute at all." Ashwini sighed letting go of my cheek.

I rubbed it lightly because it hurt. "I don't understand." I frowned at her but for some reason that just made the other women laugh.

I don't understand...?
