《Nightwalker》Chapter Nine

I heard a gasp from behind me and I turned while opened my eyes to see Sylvia standing there in shock. I smiled at her happily as the smell of the food on the plate and the blood in the cup mixed with the smell of the wild life and plants the wind brought in through the window.
"It's such a nice day, why are all the shutters closed?" I asked her looking back out the window to the clear blue sky that had birds playing under it.
"Does the light not hurt you?" Sylvia asked cautiously walking towards me.
I turned my smile to her again. "No it doesn't, why do you ask?"
Sylvia froze in front of me again and I could hear her heartbeat beating frantically in her chest as she looked at me. Her eyes held something I couldn't read in them when she looked at me, I saw her hands begin to tremble. "How do you get more beautiful each time I look at you?" She asked in a whisper and I blushed.
"I don't know what you're talking about Sylvia. I might feel different but I don't think I look that different from before." I looked away from her embarrassed.
"But you do, you look amazing." Sylvia told me and I could hear the sincerity in her voice.
I shook my head not believing her. "What did you mean when you asked why the sun isn't hurting me?" I went back to the previous topic.
"Well, it usually takes a very long time for one of your kind to build up resistance towards the sun. You've only been awake for a month, well technically a day since you were asleep for most of the month anyway." Sylvia answered me as she turned away from me and placed her tray onto the table.
"Well, I have been told I am a very strange and different person." I smiled with a laugh as I walked to her and picked up the glass of blood. I felt my teeth lengthen and my senses expand making the mana around me more prominent. I sipped at the blood and waved my hand around in the air feeling the mana. "It's very dull in here." I mutter feeling the mana in the hall was very dusty and dark while the mana that seeped in from outside was full of brightness and life. I waved my hands at the windows using the mana to push both the windows and shutters open so that new and fresh mana could come into the room.
Sylvia gasped from beside me. "How'd you do that?" She asked blinking hard against the sudden light in the room as the wind put out the fires in the fireplace and torches along the walls.
"I can feel the mana around us, I just nudged the mana in the direction of the windows to push them open." I shrugged not entirely sure how to do it properly but it worked so I'm happy with that.
Sylvia shook her head a small smile on her lips. "You really are a strange one. Even I have heard of mana and it is very difficult to feel and move it around. How can you just nudge it in the right direction when most people have to train for years to even feel it around them?"
I shrugged tipping back my glass swallowing the last of the drink before moving onto the food. "I just feel it and let it do whatever it wants inside and around me. In return, I can move it with a nudge with my mind." I smiled at her as I felt the mana within and around her. "You could probably do it too if you accept it within you."

"Accept what?" She asked.
"The mana. Let it do as it pleases within you and it will allow you to do what you please to it." I told her with another shrug. "It's what I do anyway."
"Well, I wasn't asleep for a whole month to do something like that." She drawled at me and I laughed.
"Alright, but I still don't entirely know how this happened." I told her finishing my breakfast. "Have you told lady Beatrice that I'm going to meet her in the library now?"
"Yes I have, she was surprised she didn't feel you wake up." Sylvia answered.
"Feel me wake up?" I asked her as I headed towards the door leaving the plate, tray and cup for another servant to clean up.
"Yeah, I don't understand it very well, but I think it's like how you can feel mana. Lady Aviva and lady Beatrice can both feel when you or anyone they have changed has woken up. Like during the month you were asleep the rare times you woke up both lady Aviva and lady Beatrice appeared without anyone going to grab them." Sylvia explained while showing me towards the library. "I think she was surprised that you were awake because she didn't feel you wake up and lady Aviva looked very surprised as well when she saw you, meaning that she didn't feel you wake up either."
"Hmm, I wonder why?" I murmured to myself and realised that this time I could see people staring at me like before. "Sylvia, did you see me straight away when you walked into the hall?"
"What? Why?" She asked shooting me a confused look.
"Well when I was walking from my Mistress's office to the dining hall no one seemed to stare at me like they are now and a girl even ran into me like she didn't see me." I told her with a frown. "I even stopped and leant against the wall as a boy passed. I pinched his arm but when he looked around his eyes skipped right over me like I wasn't even there."
I saw Sylvia frown deeply before she started to nod. "I didn't see you straight away when I walked into the dining hall. The only reason, I think, I saw you was because the window was open and I looked in that direction and saw you there. It was like I could see you there right in front of me but if I looked away then back again you'd have disappeared. Actually even right now I have to keep a conscious effort to see you, I mean, I can't hear your footsteps nor can I feel your heat right beside me."
I lifted a hand and placed it over her's making her stop. "Can you feel me now?" I asked in concern.
She smiled and squeezed my hand. "Yes I can, but I admit, I'm afraid to let go because I can't feel you unless you're touching me."
I hmm'd in thought wondering why all of a sudden I'm like a ghost to those around me. "I'm going to have to ask lady Beatrice." I stated looking back up at Sylvia who nodded.
"She'll know what might be happening." Sylvia agreed and started walking again and I slipped my hand from hers.
She looked back at me in panic and I smiled at her. "I'm still here." I assured her and she blushed.

"Sorry." She apologised and looked away embarrassed.
I smiled at her back and kept following her till she stopped in front of large wooden doors that had gold leaf intricately engraved into the grain of both doors and had golden handles. Sylvia opened the door to a large library that had floor to ceiling shelves that were full of books, tombs and scrolls along all the walls and rows of book filled shelves taking up most of the floor space in the room. I followed Sylvia to the back of the double story room where an open space with a large wooden desk sat facing the books and its back was against the back wall that had shuttered windows in it. The desk was covered and surrounded in books; some open, some closed and some were bookmarked or had pieces of paper sticking out randomly through the pages.
"This is where lady Beatrice does most of her work." Sylvia explained picking up a few books that covered a smaller desk beside Beatrice's larger one. To the left of the desk was a fireplace that had a plush rug sitting on the ground in front of it and two comfy chairs facing it. More shelves lined the wall to the right of the desk. I breathed in and expanded my senses feeling the mana in the room. With a wave of my hand all the windows and shutters in the large library opened and allowed fresh mana inside along with light. The fireplace and all the torches, that were lighting up the room before, went out.
"I don't think I'm going to get use to you doing that." Sylvia breathed as she looked around the now very bright room full of history, facts and fiction.
"I like it." I told her with a laugh and smile. "I'll wait here for lady Beatrice. I still believe that there is water on the floor of my room. Can you go and clean it up and open up the widows in there too please."
"Are you sure you want me to go?" Sylvia asked worriedly.
"I'm not going to go to sleep for another month Sylvia don't worry. I'll be fine on my own here." I told her as I picked up one of the chairs near the fireplace and placed it in front of the now open window on the back wall before sitting down to look out at the garden that surrounded the mansion.
"Okay, have a good lesson then." Sylvia nodded and with a goodbye wave from me she left. I moved the chair I was sitting in so that I could still see outside but I could also see the rest of the library.
I watched as the breeze rustled the flowers in the garden and breathed in the mana and life that came into the room with the air. I was staring and daydreaming when I felt a presence enter the library. I stood up and looked to the door to see lady Beatrice looking around in surprise at the open windows and bright light before her eyes landed on me and they widened even further.
"What is the meaning of this?" She demanded as she walked quickly towards me and I was caught by her beauty. She is an absolutely stunning woman.
"I apologise if the light hurts you my lady, I'll close the windows if it bothers you." I apologised awkwardly as her silver eyes narrowed at me.
"It doesn't bother me but how can you stand it?" She asked me standing in front of her desk.
"It feels nice." I answered with a smile. "The windows in here have been closed up too long. The mana in here was becoming dirty and needed to be replaced with new mana from outside."
"How did you know mana needs to be replaced by newer mana?" Beatrice asked me.
"I can feel it." I answered her and expanded my senses till I could feel the mana against and inside me. I waved my hand through the air. "I can feel the mana that was in the room greeting the new mana and replacing each other to make the life in the room fresher and calmer. Ever since I woke up I could do this."
Beatrice stared at me before shaking her head with a sigh. "You are indeed a strange thing."
My shoulders slumped and I shook my head in disbelief. "Not you too." I groaned. "Everyone's calling me strange and different, it's not my fault I can do what I do faster and better than anyone else." I muttered dejectedly.
Beatrice giggled and I looked up at her to see a small smile on her face and I realised that it was the first time I had seen the woman smile. I said stunning before, when she smiles she's bloody mind glowingly gorgeous. I smiled back at her before bowing to her. "I'm sorry I didn't greet you straight away but, good morning lady Beatrice, I'm here for your tutelage on the written word and in how to control mana."
Beatrice nodded her head. "Yes, well, I guess we should get to it." She said and came around her desk to start moving books and writing utensils around. First she told me the alphabet before showing me how each letter looked on paper. She handed me the paper and I traced my fingers over the letters. I smiled as I felt mana running through the ink.
"Each letter has a different feeling of mana." I murmured more to myself but Beatrice heard me anyway.
"Really?" She asked and came to my side to run her own fingers softly against the paper before frowning. I clenched my jaw as her scent wafted around us. She smelt like the books in this library, old and earthy, her mana inside her also felt earthy and much like her sister, I couldn't believe how much she held within her. "I can't feel it." She said sounding disappointed.
I placed my hand over hers and I felt her tense beside me but she kept her hand where it was. I opened up her senses slightly and allowed the mana from each letter to flow through her fingers. I moved her hand to the first letter then the next then the next and so on and so forth till the end where she gasped in surprise. "Did you feel it?" I asked her in a whisper.
"Yes." She nodded her head keeping her fingers to the paper and my hand over hers. "You're right, each letter has a different feel to it. Each is unique."
