《Her Terrifying Love》Part 29

Lyla flailed desperately, her hand catching the stair railing halfway down the staircase.
Ryan burst into the entryway and rushed to his daughter. "Are you okay?"
She sat on a stair, rubbing her aching elbow. "There was a bird in here. Flew right at my head," she groaned. She rose and felt a sharp pain in her tailbone.
He helped her downstairs to the kitchen. While she went to the cupboard in search of Tylenol, he checked the house but found no evidence of a bird.
"Maybe you want to take the day off?" he suggested.
"I'll be okay." She offered a tepid smile.
"I'm worried about you."
"You always worry about me."
.............
At school, as usual, Carissa's fangirls buzzed around the hallways, drawing attention to themselves.
Where were Jack and Carissa? If Lyla could see them together, perhaps then she could dispel the gossip. She would know with certainty that the story was a fabrication, simply another rumor set in motion for the sake of high school drama. Throughout the school day, she didn't catch a single glimpse of the school's anointed power couple.
When Lyla emerged from the bathroom stall, she found Darcy at the mirror combing her bangs.
"So?" she asked as she washed her hands in the bathroom sink. She checked the bruise on her elbow.
"Total mystery." Darcy tucked the comb into her bag then exited the bathroom.
Lyla was alone, or so she thought until she noticed boots beneath the door of the bathroom stall behind her, men's boots like the kind Keenan wore. She turned, her back to the sink, her eyes fixed on the boots. The bathroom stall door slowly drifted open. There was definitely someone in there.
BANG! The door slammed.
She bolted out of the restroom into the bustling hallway.

You're doing this to yourself.
She steadied her nerves as she headed to class.
Don't tell Darcy. She already thinks you're crazy.
As the week dragged on, Lyla could neither confirm nor deny the break-up. There had been reported sightings of Jack and Carissa, but none of Lyla's friends had seen them together.
Aubrey stuck to her story and embellished it to the point of suggesting that Carissa might be pregnant.
"Does Aubrey even know how science works?" Darcy face-palmed. "If they'd only hooked up a few days ago there's no way anyone could tell if she was pregnant or not. Not yet."
Lyla needed more. "So, what have you heard?" Darcy was usually very good at getting to the source of a rumor and conducting a thorough investigation.
"I don't even have time to tell you how many annoying people I've talked to," Darcy sighed. "Harper said that Carissa's family has been so shamed that they're moving out of the state. She seriously believes that."
"No, she doesn't." Lyla shook her head.
Darcy nodded "Someone said Carissa ran off and married the dude. But I just saw her in Trig yesterday. So there's that. And, get this. Savannah is convinced that "the incident" turned Jack gay."
"What?! She seriously thinks guys turn gay because their girlfriends cheat on them?!" Lyla shrieked. "That's so messed up I can't even."
"Don't forget." Darcy giggled. "Savannah's the one who said in seventh-grade science class that it must have been hard to invent electricity before there were lightbulbs."
"I remember that!" She cracked up.
Darcy teased. "Well, the last I heard, Jack is coming to my party tomorrow night, so we can ask him then."
"Don't you dare!" She took a playful swing. Darcy ducked out of the way.

Richie approached. "Hey, girls." He pushed Darcy's bangs out of her eyes. "These bangs need a serious trimming, girl."
"I know it." She smoothed her bangs.
Richie tilted his head, "Why are you always hiding those pretty eyes?"
Darcy leaned in and whispered to Richie. "What are the chances that Jack is gay?"
Richie nearly choked on his gum.
"Jack Bentley? That would be a dream come true." Richie grinned. "And if that were true, Jack should win an Academy Award for best actor in a school district."
Lyla laughed.
"Don't worry. "He rested his hand on her arm. "I think your dreamboat is safely docked at the heterosexual port."
She blushed.

Obligate of a Self-Ordained Sorcerer
Come join the Discord! It was a typical late-night friday for Mara, secluded in her apartment in front of a digital expanse, relentlessly mashing code into a keyboard. An introverted workaholic, but this was what she wanted - what she had strived so hard to achieve. So why did she feel so lost? Her life was productive, comfortable, satisfying. Plenty had it worse but she still felt... ungrateful? Stunted? The right word escaped her, but she could feel the general revelation settling upon her. With it came a choice that would set events in motion far beyond the meager scope of a 'New Game+'. So taking an intrusive portal to god-knows-where, Mara will come to find that her new world offers boons and banes with equal abandon. Magic, skills, and unforgiving difficulty. For a frail human shut-in, finding herself stranded in the middle of a sprawling dungeon was one of the least desirable outcomes. Food and water would be the least of her problems, why oh why couldn't she just get summoned by some pervy king to slay a demon army or something? This is a story of magic and adventure with skills and stats galore. A litrpg / isekai epic that I've been inspired to make after years of wonderful works like "So I'm a Spider," "Rimuru the Slime," "Azarinth Healer," "Negima!?," and plethora of other isekai and fantasy novels and animes. Special shout-out to Douglas Adams, a big influence on narative humor that's had a non-insignificant effect on my writing style. I hope you enjoy joining Mara on her journey as I attempt to scratch the itch they left behind.Chapters target 3-6k~ words. Though I'm personally aiming for a chapter every couple weeks, I think I can at least promise one a month with how busy work's been. I made a Patreon due to requests, if you'd like to support me there I'll be using it to fund artwork and RR ads for increased exposure.

The Ingress Estate
Jonathon Eucole. Soldier. Scholar. Now an Initiate, the dedication without dedication, he finds himself both prisoner and master of an arcane edifice, the Ingress Estate, which can neither be escaped, nor controlled; only diverted, maintained, and pacified. This is a gothic fantasy story, set in a world in which gods and the afterlife are not only real and known, but were both established in living memory of some of the inhabitants after millennia of arcane warfare with the being who constructed the mundane reality the humans occupy. But this isn't the story of those who colonized the afterlife at the cost of their own humanity, but a somewhat more ordinary man, in somewhat extraordinary circumstances. This is also a LitRPG-lite, which means there's a system of sorts, fragments of which can be observed through Jonathon's eyes. Don't expect level-up screens, or statistics, or indeed numbers much at all, beyond those the inhabitants of the world itself apply to understanding their own reality. It pretty much doesn't matter to the story, I mention it so those who don't want to read LitRPG at all can successfully avoid it here. I don't have any particular plan here, just some ideas inherent in the genre. This is a character concept I toyed with some years ago; an old man, bright of mind but weighed down into apathy, both by his past and his responsibilities for a terrible estate that cannot be left without stewardship. Don't expect any kind of overarching plot or story, because that's really not what this is about. Also don't expect much dialogue. Or character development. Or much of anything, really, because I've planned nothing in the way of an actual book, here. Other relevant information, if you've read this far for some reason: The MC isn't super-powerful to begin with, and probably never will be. He's a veteran with some useful skills, and the insight on how to use them, so can deal with the world's ordinary threats reasonably well, but not too much beyond that. --- Currently on hiatus, as currently the story has a rather poor ratio of effort-to-personal-payoff. I may return to this once I have a clear idea of how to get the stories where I want them. I've started a more standard LitRPG using the same system. But if you like intelligence characters who cleverly min-max their classes, it probably isn't the story for you; it's the story of a rather ordinary guy who winds up in a very similar universe.
