《Her Terrifying Love》Part 6

"I didn't even see him." Jack swallowed his words. "He just... Oh, Jesus."
Lyla squinted into Jack's car. "Where's Carissa?" she asked.
"I left her at the party. When I saw that dude freaking out and going after you again, I knew something really bad was gonna happen." His eyes went to the body sprawled on the pavement.
"Well, you saved me." She offered a gentle smile and looked into his deep, brown eyes. "He would have killed me or beaten me so badly I'd wished I was dead."
Lyla filled her lungs with the cool forest air and exhaled slowly. This gorgeous guy that she had often fantasized about had come to her rescue. Her heart raced.
He produced his phone and held it in his trembling hand. "Damn! No signal."
"No, wait. Wait. Don't call. Just think about this for a minute."
"Think about what?! We need to report this."
Lyla placed her hand over his phone and stepped closer. "Look, you've been drinking."
He nodded.
"Didn't you get tagged for a DUI last summer?"
"Who told you that?"
"People talk."
Jack took a quick glance at the body, then hung his head.
"You can forget about a scholarship. And football," said Lyla. "With the DUI and then something like this on your record, there's no coming back from that one."
"Well, then you call the police."
"And tell them what? How do I leave you out of the story?"
"Don't do it for me."
"I'm also doing it for me. You know why Keenan was so f'ed up? His mother. She's seriously deranged. I'm more scared of her than I ever was of him. She actually went to prison for stabbing some woman."

"No way."
"Totally true. His whole family is a bunch of psychos. If they find out I had something to do with this, they'll kill me. And they'll come after you, too."
"So, what are you saying? We just leave him here on the side of the road?"
"Maybe we dump him and his car out here somewhere."
Jack's jaw dropped. "That's insane. We need to call the cops and tell them what happened. It was an accident. There was nothing I could do. You saw it."
"And then what? You think everything goes back to normal? No way. This changes everything. Everything."
She experienced a moment of clarity, the effects of the drug abating.
"Look around, Jack. We're in the middle of nowhere. Nobody is ever gonna find him out here."
"We can't. We just can't."
"Yeah, we can. We need to."
He looked deep into her eyes and considered her words carefully. They jumped when they heard a scuffing sound from the shoulder of the road. Jack advanced toward the body.
"Wasn't he facing the other way?!" He eyed the corpse, his heart beating faster.
"No. No," she insisted. "He was just like that. He was."
They stared at the body for a full minute, watching for the slightest indication of movement.
"Maybe I'm a terrible person for saying this, but if anybody deserved to die..." She directed her eyes from Jack toward Keenan's body sprawled on the roadside.
"Oh, my God." Jack wrapped his arms around Lyla and rested his head on her shoulder.

Ph. D. In Sorcery
Follow Anastasia, the unlucky physicist turned wizard, as her reality gets turned upside down and she is plunged into a world of gods, magic, swords, and adventure. Short and sweet description, anything more would be a spoiler and I detest those. Now, what you can expect from reading: This is my first time writing, or better said allowing someone else to read that mess so don’t raise your expectations too much. Still, I will try to keep the story flowing, while also devoting as much time as I can to editing. In my opinion, the story is written at a faster pace than normal with time skips here and there. I will do my best to not allow the faster pace to ruin the story by using those time skips to raise the skill of the main character. I am mainly looking for feedback while I test myself in new and unexplored waters. I did put a lot of thought into worldbuilding and the magic system, it is something that has been mulling inside my head for years before I sat down to write anything down. First and foremost I am an engineer and not a writer. I will try to do my utmost to make the world logical and consistent, but sometimes I might not express that in a way that’s clearly understood. I have a rough outline with several possible endings, but the story will change and evolve as I do. But in case I have to stop for whatever reason, the story will get an ending. It will be done even if I have to send coded messages from a bunker. I am a big fan of the Dresden Files so you can be certain that everything mentioned will in most cases be used, with a few red herrings sprinkled in the mix. But that also means I will enjoy putting the main character through the meat grinder while I eat popcorn and laugh from my evil lair. Physics, and to be more precise electromagnetism, quantum field theory, general and special relativity are very interesting topics for me that I research in my spare time. That means that the premise of the story will be using that research to bring logic to magic. Stupid I know, magic is magic, but to me, there is no reason why there shouldn’t be a concrete set of rules there. But it is still magic and that allows me to play with some things that shouldn’t normally be possible. I will focus on evolving the main character and having her react as anyone normal would, from my perspective. There will be scenes of battle, gore, and sexy times, but I will not go into too many details, counting on your imagination to fill the gaps. There will be plenty of combat, even battles ranging from a few dozen, a hundred, and thousands of participants. I could go on but there isn’t much to say that would convince anyone to read, either you thought the title was cool or you liked the poster. Or not, but after several days in photoshop, that’s the best I could do. And the title was originally Sorceress with a Ph.D. The new one makes a little less sense but I like the ring of it more for some reason. I just hope someone enjoys what I write as much as I do. In the end that is the reason, I am doing this, because I enjoy putting my thoughts on paper and seeing the outcome. Credit for the art: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/e0o8nw

Beyond the Bridge
There are many worlds, many multiverses, and you can move between them via the Federation's Bridge network - magical gateways to other worlds. The world dubbed "C'thon" by its inhabitants - or Gamma-Theta-Nu-649, if you ask the Federation's bureaucracy - was deserted when the Federation found it. The "civilized" races had all died out centuries prior, and the wilderness had grown downright feral in their absence. Now, the lonely Federation outpost of Bridgetown is under constant threat from the hungry wildlife, malicious fey, territorial goblins, and wandering undead that surround it. The town's distance from the Federation's centers of power means that it gets precious few of the resources that it needs to stay safe and afloat. Enter the Guild of Adventurers, a plucky and disparate crew who do the Federation's dirty work in exchange for coin. One team, the first of many, crosses the Bridge to C'thon looking for fame, fortune, and (if they're lucky) the answer to a newly-discovered Prophecy. They'll get much more than they bargained for, although first they need to avoid being eaten by the local wildlife. Updates weekly on Wednesday. Chapters will be as long as they need to be for them to work, which means they can vary. If anything drops below 2500 words, I'll post an extra chapter if I have one ready. [PS: This is not a litRPG, but I do borrow heavily from TTRPGs for inspiration, and the general setting and storyline is from a TTRPG campaign I'm running.] [PPS: This is my first attempt at writing long-form fiction. I'm not trying to make a great piece of literature or have a multi-novel overarching plot, but hopefully it'll still be a fun story - let me know what you think in the comments.] [PPPS: Cover image is from a free-download wallpaper by Tyler Edlin; I do not own it, and will take it down immediately if requested.]
