《Things Left Unspoken (SandersSidesAU)》Chapter Forty-Nine

Roman was waiting for the cue after he smiled at Virgil. He never told the song he chose Virgil because he wanted it to be a surprise. He was grateful for Alisha who let him practice in her dorm every few days the last few weeks before auditions. Virgil was sitting looking bored and Roman knew he was the head for the makeup department now so he had to attend. He had to assign people and make sure they worked well. Or at least that was what he was told. Roman is pretty sure Thomas had made him come to help him out, like Virgil wasn't going to already because of Roman.
Roman started to sing while looking up at the balcony section. The auditorium was big. It could fit about 154 on the first floor and the balcony was slightly smaller that could fit about 100 people. That was usually the student section. Everywhere else was for family and friends. The seats were red velvet and older. The top had a catwalk where tech would work with the lights and sound. The sound booth was right across from where he was standing.
He could make eye contact with the tech that was in there. He was going to play up the romantic side of things. After all, this song was about gaining the trust of someone who was not trusting. Roman couldn't help but relate, seems that Michal was right. Virgil didn't trust easily, and Roman was determined to make him see that he was worthy of Virgil's trust.
He didn't know the song well but between Alisha giving him a place to practice and Micheal helping him with the words, he picked it up quickly. When Micheal would get tired of hearing him he would seek out Alisha who did not care and would sing along with him.
He didn't know why but he did, it was like he connected with something when he sang it. He figured he was relating emotionally but this time when he sang it felt different. But not in a bad way. He felt he held power over his audience. He was back, and thanks to Virgil.
"Some people stay far away from the door
If there's a chance of it opening up
They hear a voice in the hall outside
And hope that it just passes by
Some people live with the fear of a touch
And the anger of having been a fool
They will not listen to anyone
So nobody tells them a lie,"
Roman glanced down at Virgil. He saw recognition cross his face. Roman smiled. Would Virgil catch the message? He hoped that he did. Roman was able to move the mic and start moving toward the edge of the stage where Virgil was sitting. He was really hoping that he got the Phantom. That way he could sing the songs to Virgil as he studied or while Virgil drew.
"I know you're only protecting yourself
I know you're thinking of somebody else
Someone who hurt you
But I'm not above
Making up for the love
You've been denying you could ever feel
I'm not above doing anything
To restore your faith if I can"
Roman crouched down to Virgil's area. He smiled as he sang the rest of the chorus.
"Some people see through the eyes of the old
Before they ever get a look at the young
I'm only willing to hear you cry
Because I am an innocent man
I am an innocent man
Oh yes I am"
Roman got back up and walked back to the mic stand. He could see Virgil was getting uncomfortable. He started to get anxious. He really hoped that it was alright he did that. He practically just pulled him into the audition without saying anything. It put him on the spot. Roman then felt a sudden wave of calm flow through him and he saw Virgil mimic a deep breath, probably to remind himself.

Virgil was alright, he could continue. Just a few more verses and he was finished. He almost felt guilty about making Virgil anxious, but he still felt he held power. He figured that all actors felt that way at one point or another as conceited as it sounded.
"Some people say they will never believe
Another promise they hear in the dark
Because they only remember too well
They heard somebody tell them before
Some people sleep all alone every night
Instead of taking a lover to bed
Some people find that's it's easier to hate
Than to wait anymore
I know you don't want to hear what I say
I know you're gonna keep turning away
But I've been there and if I can survive
I can keep you alive,"
Roman felt the music. He smiled and got into it. Something compelled him to do so, he knew that he had almost everyone enthralled with his voice. How could they not be? Roman was good at what he did.
Roman didn't notice the waves of magic he was giving off, but if he did he didnt care. Why?
It was waves of attention so he could entertain them. His voice picked up as he finished the song. Finish strong. That's what he had to do. Keep them enthralled so they didn't see who he really was.
"I'm not above going through it again
And although this is a fight I can lose
The accused is an innocent man,"
With that last thought, another wave of calm flooded through him. He looked back down at Virgil. His eyes were widened and his mouth was opened slightly. Roman was singing to him, but did Virgil know that?
"I am innocent man
Oh yes I am
I am innocent man
Oh yes I am"
Roman finished his song and Thomas was staring at him and Virgil blinked and got up. Roman wasn't sure if it was nerves or how the lights hit his eyes, but everything had a light red tint to it. It quickly settled once he blinked a few times.
"Thank you Roman, you may leave. I may need you to read a monologue later." Thomas told him. Roman nodded and thanked him and walked off the stage. Patton smiled at him and gave him a thumbs up. He didn't see Virgil.
He made his way to the backstage rooms, he opened the door to see Virgil sitting on the chair in front of the mirror. He looked up and saw Roman. Roman smiled and walked up to him.
"So, how'd I do?" Roman asked.
Virgil had already written a note for him. Roman looked down at Virgil's lap as he moved it closer. How did you do that.
Roman was a little confused "What do you mean?" Virgil shook his head.
It doesn't matter. He wrote.
"Did you like the song?" Roman asked. Virgil shrugged. "Are you upset with me?" Roman asked. Virgil looked at him in the mirror. He was wearing just eyeliner today instead of eyeshadow under his eyes. He was confused.
Why would I be? He asked. Roman nodded, so he didn't get that the song was for him.
"You just seem a little off, that's all." Roman told him.
Well you did just enchant the entire auditorium. It's the after effects of that. Roman was shocked to hear that.
"What?" Roman asked.
You didn't realize that? Roman shook his head. Virgil was shocked to say the least.
"What did I do?" Roman asked.
Just kept us where you needed us. Virgil told him. Roman nodded and thought for a second.

"How did it affect you?" Roman asked. Virgil shook his head and got up. "No, please answer it." Roman needed to know if he did something to hurt Virgil so he could avoid it.
It was nothing, don't worry about it. Just some paralysis and focus on you. Maybe emotional linking as well, but that's okay. Virgil wrote to him. He started to leave.
"Do you have to go?" Roman asked. Virgil nodded.
My uncle needs me. We are fine, seriously. You had no idea you did it, calm down. Roman took the note and looked back up and he was gone.
He looked through his bag for his phone.
Roman wasn't sure why but he almost felt that he was in trouble or he got Virgil in trouble with what he pulled.
"Roman? Headmaster needs you." One of the techs said. Roman nodded.
"I'll be there in a bit, thank you." Roman responded and put his phone away. He left the room and took his bag with him to put it with Virgil's when he had to wait for him to be done with Thomas.
Roman didn't have to but he wanted to do that. He had been content here for so long but seeing his friends from back home and Remus again, was almost a wake up call. He would have to make a choice soon.
What he would choose was based on so many things but he just had to find the right one to focus on. One of those things was sitting in the front row next to the headmaster while spinning a pen looking bored.
Roman didn't think he could get any cuter. He sighed and went to talk with the tech that would tell him which group he would be paired with.
He was just walking along without Roman towards his own dorm minding his own business. His hands hurt because of how much he was signing to get his people in line. He really hated dealing with girls but one of them had a deaf sister so they were able to translate for Virgil. Thank god they did because he would have been in hell otherwise. He just wanted to get back to his dorm and change.
Funny thing about life, it doesn't always go the way you want it to.
Virgil was pulled into a dark corner. He yelped until he saw who it was. Janus had pulled him into a dark corner.
"What the actual fuck dude?" Virgil whispered out.
"What?" Janus said quietly. Virgil rolled his eyes.
"Why the fuck did you grab me? Don't you know that is super creepy behavior and could get you punched one day." Virgil responded and shook Janus off. He then fixed his sweatshirt.
"I need to talk to you about something. Besides, Remus is into that kind of stuff." Virgil cringed. He did not care what his friend and Roman's brother got up to as long as it didn't involve him. "You look uncomfortable."
"Thank you Captain Obvious, I just listened to basically say that your boyfriend has a kink that I would rather not discuss. Also I accidentally took Patton's when doing laundry and we are close in size but not comfortably." Virgil told him and walked off. Janus followed behind him.
"You know what Remus would say." Janus smiled widely and Virgil rolled his eyes. Janus kept bringing up Remus. He was really getting attached and he was happy that Janus found someone but he could get tired of it. It was a good sign that Janus never corrected him when he said boyfriend so Virgil assumed it was going well.
Virgil opened the door and walked over to his closet. He threw his bag down and grabbed some sweatpants and Roman's sweatshirt he kept leaving at Virgil's dorm. Virgil smiled at that.
"Get comfortable, I'll be right back." Virgil told him and walked into his bathroom. He changed his clothes, he scrunched his nose. The sweatshirt still held Roman's cologne but not much. He would have to give it back soon.
And then steal another one.
Was that weird? And isn't it common for someone to steal their boyfriend or girlfriend's clothes? He had seen that somewhere he was pretty sure. Did that signal to people that he and Roman were dating even though they weren't? Virgil sure hoped one day they would be but right now the weird platonic thing they had going was good enough.
And he was content. Mostly.
At least Virgil thought it was.Virgil was getting tired of the endless boyfriend jokes that Janus and Remus had made and Patton had picked up on. Virgil just had to focus on talking again, then he could date Roman. And possibly have it crash and burn.
Because he's ever the optimist about love.
But he wasn't going to focus on that. He walked out of the corner and Janus rolled his eyes. "Could you two get any worse?" He asked.
"Says the person who had a vivid wet dream about his twin two days ago." Virgil responded. Janus was surprised and VIrgil was sure that he didn't expect Virgil to pull that out.
"I told you that in confidence!" Janus said. Virgil looked around.
"I do not see a singular other person here. Now, want to tell me why you grabbed me like ya used to or am I supposed to guess?" Virgil asked while hoping over the couch. He did it often even though both Patton and Logan told him to stop. Roman has too but hasn't moved to actually enforce it.
"Roman told me what happened today at the auditions, but before that I am still a bit thrown." Janus said.
"Why?" Virgil asked.
"You have an accent? " Janus asked. Virgil looked at him. "What, I am still getting used to this whole talking thing with you."
"I usually talk to you, you are my friend." Virgil pointed out. Janus glared at him. "I also grew up in New York."
"You know what I mean. When did this start happening? Like I said before, I expected you to have talked to Roman before me." Virgil shrugged.
"I met him last, also we have a deal that's a little worrisome so I am trying to put it off until after he makes his choice." Virgil said.
"You made a deal? What is this, Once Upon A Time?" Janus asked. Virgil rolled his eyes and got up to go to his fridge. He knew he should have never introduced Janus to that show. His favorite character was Rumplestilskin and for "obvious reason" according to Janus. Virgil suspected that Janus just liked the fact that he was clever about the deals that he made.
"It was a promise, nothing like mine and Patton's." Virgil said.
"I still can't believe you two did that, it's super dangerous for experienced witches, what made you think you could do that?" Janus wasn't incorrect. When Virgil made the deal he was less experienced than he was now but he had always been strong. He learned fast and that was important, Patton was smart in his own way.
Patton was skilled at gardening and kitchen magic as well as emotional manipulation. That's what made him powerful. What made Virgil powerful hasn't been found yet, all he knows is that he can cross the Veil with almost no effort. He was also highly versatile in magic.
Virgil was dangerous in his own rite. Some people just refused to see it. "We were young and nothing bad happened, did it?"
"Your parents divorce?" Janus asked. Virgil sighed. He was over on the couch again.
"You really think that came about because of that deal? You do realize I still refuse to admit he likes me despite the constant flirting and obvious signs. I am just not good at that shit." Virgil opened his iced tea. He had gotten one for Janus but it remained on the table.
"And you think I am? I am currently trying to convince his twin brother that maybe dating someone long term isn't so bad." Janus said. "We are a mess." Virgil nodded.
"You still haven't gotten to your point yet." Virgil said.
"What did Roman do?" Janus asked.
"He sang a song and put some magic into it without knowing, we both know it happens a lot." Virgil said.
"Yes, untrained magic is more tied to the person's emotions and actions. What you do influences the people around you. So I ask again, what did Roman do?"
"Nothing that was too bad or I couldn't handle." Virgil said.
"But you almost didn't. That's the point." Janus insisted. Virigl knew he was getting upset but he didn't want to say anything. He still had to figure out how to combat what Roman pulled. And the fact he pulled it without trying was nerve racking for Virgil. Janus was getting upset and so was Virgil.
"Listen, I am not used to music or creative magic. It's rare on this side of the world, so excuse me for being a little rusty with it." Virgil responded.
"We know he had creative magic, that's not the issue." Janus reminded him.
"It is when he somehow figured out how to use a siren's voice." Virgil told him. Janus stopped. "It sounded just like him, but you could feel the drawl."
"Sirens aren't native to the East coast. Or even to this part of the world, they prefer a more humid environment." Virgil looked at Janus.
"I know. Twins are born, one with magic and one without, and then he pulls some siren routine?"
"How did he learn?" That was the question. Virgil had no idea. There were so many questions and Virgil didn't know the answer to any of them.
"Why would I know? Why are you asking? You hated him until a few weeks ago." Virgil pointed out.
"Strongly disliked, I got a weird vibe off of him when we first met outside of seeing Remus. Now we know that it was suppressed magic."
"Suddenly he's fine now?" Virgil asked.
"No, he's still a dick. But his vibe is much better." (Janus, the Vibe Queen)
Virgil rolled his eyes. "You are insufferable sometimes. Talkin' about vibes and shit." Janus smiled and then sinkered, no doubt at the slip up. Virgil was aware that it came out more when he was tired and he was emotionally and physically tired.
"Sometimes I forget that you are as smart as Logan. Then you say shit like that and I am reminded." Janus said.
"I just don't show it as much because I don't talk often." Virgil smiled. "You have to pay attention to it. I keep people on their toes." There was a knock at the door. Virgil walked over and opened it.
"Hi." Roman said. Virgil waved and let him in. "I didn't know you had company. Am I interrupting?" Virgil shook his head.
"Don't worry about it, I am leaving." Janus said. He nodded toward Virgil. Roman looked at him.
"Are you wearing my sweatshirt?" He asked, Virgil shrugged. "It looks good on you." Virgil knew he was fucked a while ago.
But now he truly was fucked. He hoped Roman stayed, but he didn't want to think silly things.

8 1108The Stars Have Eyes
The universe was a vast, empty, dark, and uncaring place. Then life happened, and the universe was changed forever. Only a teeny-tiny bit, but definitely different. Then again, the universe changes a teeny-tiny bit every second of every day. For instance, if someone were to get off the couch and randomly drink a glass of milk? Bam! One less glass of milk in the universe. Changed forever. Well, excluding any time-travel shenanigans, but anyone who puts a big old hole in the time-space continuum just to un-drink a glass of milk should really reevaluate their priorities. Unless, of course, they were attempting to prevent some massive catastrophe vis-a-vis said glass of milk. Such a scenario is by no means impossible, as one should never underestimate the importance of calcium. Another important tip for any life forms out there is to keep things in perspective. Some look at the vastness of creation in relation to themselves and go, ‘Man, this sucks!’ These people really need to narrow their focus. Sure, they will never affect anything happening on the other end of the galaxy, but so what? That’s way the heck over there, where it doesn’t matter. Therefore, in order to maintain a healthy mindset, it is important to narrow one’s perspective to the things and people that affect them, and that they can affect in turn. But what happens if one is an unfathomable cosmic being from beyond the veil of reality? What happens when such an existence is capable of influencing entire swathes of the universe just by its presence? A creature such as Magh'rathlak the Observer? That particular entity is only about average as far as reality-warping creatures from the dawn of time go, so its influence over the fabric of reality is rather limited. And it still struggles to keep things in perspective. That, among other things, is why it decided to narrow its worldview a bit by compressing the maddening vastness of its being into a single corporeal form. Magh'rathlak had never tried such a feat, but that wasn't about to stop it. After all, how hard could being human possibly be?
