《Things Left Unspoken (SandersSidesAU)》Chapter Forty-Four

Virgil had locked his uncle's car and they made their way back up to his dorm. Virgil unlocked the door and Roman gasped. The bed was over the couch but it was covered in a purple sheet that had fairy lights all around it. There were also a bunch of pillows on the underside so it was all comfy.
"Virgil, this is amazing." Roman said. He realized Virgil was putting the ice cream away. "Did you do this?" He nodded.
Roman was in awe, but he still set up the computer and the tv as Virgil changed into his onesie. Virgil came out slowly and Roman turned and smiled at him.
"See I knew you'd be cute." Roman said, Virgil smiled and hid his face in the hood. Roman chuckled and went over to Virgil. He picked him up bridal style and Virgil yelped softly. He held on to Roman tight.
"It's been a while since I did that, huh?" Roman asked. Virgil nodded and refused to let go. Roman hugged him to his chest and then smiled. "I guess I don't need the octopus huh? I have a teddy bear right here." Roman smiled as Virgil's face went a deep pink.
Virgil put the hood up to hide from Roman. Roman chucked. "Alright, I am going to get changed. Grab something to eat. We haven't had a lot today." Roman said as he put Virgil down. He grabbed his onesie and went to the bathroom.
Once he was there he sighed and slid down the wall quietly. Did he really just do that? Surely Virgil would not want him to stick around after the night was over. He heard a small burst of air blow past him and he sighed again.
He needed to focus. Change and then get back out there. He put his onesie on and smiled. Virgil was a funny one wasn't he? He went out of the bathroom and saw Virgil was frowning at the tv. Roman moved around the room quietly but Virgil heard him and looked up.
"Need help?" Virgil nodded and Roman walked over to the couch. The computer was put on a small table Virgil used as a bedside table. Roman opened the DVD port and put in their first movie, Nightmare on Elm Street.
The two started the movie night sitting next to each other and by the time they finished the horror movie section of the night, Roman was behind Virgil hugging him close. Next they moved on to Disney movies. They started with the most recent one they could get and went backwards.
Roman sang quietly to the songs and Virgil smiled as he did. When they got to Big Hero Six, Roman didn't sing Immortals.
Roman. Virgil wrote.
"Yes?" He asked.
Why aren't you singing? Roman shrugged.
"I guess it doesn't feel right for me to sing this one." Roman responded.
Why? They abandoned the movie. Virgil had turned to face Roman. He had the hood of the onesie up but it was slightly crooked because it was slightly too big for him. Roman almost couldn't breathe, Virgil was too cute. He had a worried expression that was almost too much for Roman.
Roman decided he was going to flirt a little and see where it got him. The two did flirt from time to time but never enough that it was too much for either of them. Roman shrugged and then smiled at Virgil.
"I guess because I don't have the right voice for it." Roman said. Virgil shook his head.

I'll bite. Who does have the right voice for it? He wrote. Roman smiled at him.
"Despite not knowing what it sounds like, I think that would be you." Virgil blushed immediately and Roman chuckled and hugged him. "You don't have to answer that. I believe you will talk when you can. When you can talk to me just know that I am totally making you sing Immortals."
Roman could feel the energy shift he just didn't know what it meant. All he knew was that it felt like the time stopped when they were like that. The movie seemed to slow down and it was just the two of them sitting surrounded by fairy lights and blankets. Roman let his eyes shut as he gave in to the warm feeling.
Sure this was something that Roman wasn't used to. He specialized in the seduction of random guys he hooked up with at parties. He had a steady relationship once upon a time but it ended badly. It happened when he was building his persona so he just got dubbed a heartbreaker.
The breakup he endured was messy. He figured out he wasn't bi, but gay. The girl he was dating didn't take it well at all. He had told her in person because he wasn't heartless, he just listened to his own heartless thoughts back then.
But when it came to romance, Roman was a sucker and he didn't want a girl to treat people like shit after he broke up with her over a text.
The breakup was just a few simple words. "I don't have the same feelings you do." He tried to put it nicely, but of course since he had the persona it came out much more monotone than he meant it.
He was a freshman in high school when it happened. She yelled and screamed, demanding to know if it was another girl he was seeing or even if he found someone who would sleep with him. She offered to have sex with him but he refused. She begged him to tell her why, and it was simple to just 'I'm gay' but he didn't say it and moved on. He refused everything she accused him of and walked out.
He also unknowingly handed her the opportunity to tell everyone any reason why he broke up with her. She happended to choose that he was gay. Once the rumor started, guys fell all over him more and even girls did. But his ex had it out for him. She tried everything to get Roman back, even trying to pressure him back into a relationship by saying she would tell everyone he said she looked like a guy.
Roman wasn't blind, she was toxic. When she told everyone that a few of his upperclassmen friends that he had made over the few months she had been trying to get him back told him to say something. So he stood on the table with Remus watching fearfully as he told everyone quite loudly that he was in fact gay and had broken up with his ex because she didn't look like a guy.
Did he make it worse for her? Kinda but Roman felt it was a nice kind of karma. She was basically blackmailing him and was not a nice person, his friends had told him that and it was clear.
But still Valentine's Day always gave him hope for love, he just assumed that he would have to wait longer to find it. Would he have to wait longer? He had what he always wanted in Virgil. They just weren't a couple. It also made him wonder if the things they were doing were strictly platonic. They were hanging out as friends and from what Roman had heard, Virgil wasn't a touchy kind of person. Roman was.

Not as much as Patton, but he appreciated a hug from time to time. If he hadn't had a brother like Remus who was a hugger as well, he would be much more touch starved. He could tell by certain shudders that Virgil had been when they hugged that he was worse than Roman. Maybe that's why Roman had started to crave Virgil's touch.
Anything he could get he would. Maybe it was because Roman felt he needed to be that way to help Virgil. He knew Virgil was burying into him. If it was out of embarrassment, fear, or anxiety, Roman couldn't tell. He could ask and get a nod in return or he would wait until Virgil was finished.
Roman kept his eyes closed when he felt Virgil move his head up. He could imagine how Virgil was looking at him. Each one was a little worse than the other until he looked down and saw Virgil was smiling at him.
"What?" Roman asked while letting Virgil go. When he did, time resumed to normal and the feeling was gone. He almost sighed at the loss but he knew that Vrigil needed to write.
You believe I am going to talk again? Roman read it and looked at Virgil concerned. Did Virgil not believe that he could or would?
"Of course I do. You might need some more time and if there was anything I can do that will make it easier for you then I will. I believe that you, Virgil, could be a voice actor. A singer. You can draw like no one's business and you are going to take a story building class next year, it makes sense you could be a great poet." Roman told him. Virgil rolled his eyes.
I actually suck at writing poems. Logan asked me to write one for Patton and I could only manage a simple rhyme sequence. Virgil wrote.
"I don't think that. You just need to nurture it. I mean that's how I do it." Roman said without thinking before he realized what he said. Virgil immediately got interested.
You write poetry? Roman awkwardly chuckled and shook his head.
"I didn't say that exactly. I said-" What was he going to say? He didn't actually write it? That was a lie, a lot of it recently had been about Virgil. He could express his feelings without having to worry about it. "I don't do it often anymore. Barely, I went through a phase last year where I did." Roman shrugged.
Can I read some? Maybe more recent? Virgil asked hopefully. He had his eyes and cute freckles that Roman could barely stand to say no to. Roman shook his head.
"I don't have any right now." Roman told him, frowning. Virgil's expression fell and he looked down. Roman quickly recovered and moved his face back so Roman could see it. "None of that now, but when I write some again you will be the first to see it. Not even Remus will see it before you."
Virgil seemed confused. But saw that Roman was sincere, Roman figured it was his eyes that told him. Virgil had once told him that his favorite part of a person he liked was his eyes, but always got over crushes quickly when he saw that their eyes held another truth. Virgil liked to see people's eyes to know they were being truthful. The eyes of the soul, he claimed once.
With Virgil's expression and how he lit up, even his eyes seemed to sparkle when Roman told him that, Roman had to agree with him. The two turned their attention back to the tv where the ending of Big Hero Six was playing out, and it seemed time didn't stop. It just felt that way.
As Hiro found the chip that held BayMax's programming, Roman held Virgil only slightly tighter. He dipped his head to his shoulder and watched the movie from there. He smiled.
Maybe he wouldn't have to wait as long as he thought for love.
He just need to find hope again.
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
After the very intense half hour they shared, Virgil was feeling lighter than air. The connection they felt was only something he had read about and not very thoroughly. When witches or Wiccans find the type they work well with, their connection is intense.
But he was told that it only happened after both parties were in their full power and if they found a type before they hit the full power it wasn't supposed to be as intense as that just was. Maybe it wasn't anything like that connection.
It was called a Variety Tie. Virgil figured he had to look into the other types of connections, but that really wasn't him.
So as they watched Frozen, Virgil made a list of connections to look at and where he could find them. A visit to the library was to be in order.
He could skip the research and ask his grandfather but he was not about to do that. Last time he tried to take the easy way out, he got a lecture that meant he was in a meditative state for two hours and freaked Patton out. He knew when it came to learning about things he should've paid attention to, he was on his own.
He then got thinking, did he really learn about all the connections or was it just the Variety Tie when they were learning about the classifications of Wiccans? He then didn't focus on the movie and started to make a list.
Lists were his savior sometimes. They kept him organized and calmed him down. In the middle of him making a ton of different lists, Roman got his attention.
"Are you alright?" He asked. Virgil snapped out of it and looked at him. Virgil nodded. "Are you sure, you spaced out pretty intensely over there." Virgil nodded. He then held up a finger and got off the couch.
He did have to leave the comfort of Roman and he hated the tug he felt when he got up. He really didn't want to be this dependent on Roman. Roman was his friend who might just be long distance come next year, he shouldn't be so dependent on him.
He got spoons he had and turned to Roman, who smiled. Virgil didn't even check the time. "I like how you think." Roman said. Virgil smiled and they got the ice cream out. Virgil sat with it in his lap; they passed it back and forth.
During the entire movie, Roman would insult the movie despite fighting to have it on the list they watched. Finally, Virgil changed his tune.
********
I mean the magic is gonna fade when Elsa dies so prolong the inevitable? Virgil wrote when Roman said what kind of message they were trying to give.
"What? How could you say that?" Roman said. Virgil rolled his eyes.
We literally watched the sequel and that was literally what happened, Roman. Virgil insisted.
***********
Roman frowned and grumbled. "You didn't have to point it out." Roman then sat and pouted for a little while before Virgil got the message. Roman wasn't upset, he was being difficult. At least he thought he was.
Aren't I supposed to be the brat here? Virgil asked. Roman read it and sighed.
"Why do you have to be so smart?" Roman asked while hugging him again. Virgil was happy to be back in the embrace.
I am just lucky I guess. Virgil responded and they didn't have an issue until they got to Tangled. The movie went on and they were sitting and watching it nicely. Virgil had to admit, he liked Tangled more than he would ever say. Then the scene before the kingdom dance came on. Virgil swayed with the beat slightly and smiled.
It gave Roman an idea. When the dance part started Roman climbed out from the fort that Virgil had built and Virgil gave him a look.
"Come on." Virgil shook his head. "Yeah. Come on, it's a duet but I am not going to make you sing. But I am going to need a partner to dance with." Virgil frowned.
He dances but he doesn't particularly like to. Roman was giving him a look that Virgil couldn't say no to. Virgil blew the bangs out of his face and put the hood to his onesie down. He got up and Roman smiled happily. Virgil rolled his eyes.
Roman took his hand and spun him around so he was in his arms. Virgil made a face and Roman laughed a little. Virgil moved with Roman as he sang both parts. Virgil smiled as he did.
Virgil had never had a real relationship before, he wasn't sure what they felt like. He was just going along with whatever Roman did. Virgil knew he was being more clingy with Roman than with his other friends but he didn't care. Virgil felt that the rules were different for him and Roman.
Roman didn't judge when he found out Virgil couldn't talk. He didn't push him to make a sound around him. He didn't even ask questions about unless he got confirmation he could. He just accepted it and moved on. Virgil was just another person to him.
Isn't it how it should be? It confused Virgil at first.
Everyone else treated him like glass. Even Janus! But he had a reason to do so. It didn't excuse it, but they did it. They were scared and if there was anything Virgil could understand it was fear. Roman didn't. Roman didn't care he went through some shit. Roman stayed when Virgil had a panic attack despite knowing him for months rather than years like the others. Virgil was sure Roman was going to change his tune when it happened.
Roman didn't. Roman only really changed after the situation with his friends. And even then the change was so small you couldn't see it. They had obviously moved past that now as far as Virgil was concerned.
Roman wasn't fragile and he knew Virgil wasn't either. Maybe that's why Virgil had such a drive to talk again. Being friends with Roman was what showed him that he was still capable. That someone was sure he was.
But that brought him back to the thought of were they friends? This felt very comfortable, was a friendship like this? Roman never made contact with his other friends. But then again, he was kind of a dick when he first got here. So it made sense, Roman was always open and a little calmer with Virgil.
Was that to make him more comfortable? Virgil didn't care. Roman made him comfortable. Virgil smiled softly as he looked at Roman. Roman had a smile on his face as he sang the song. Roman's eyes were slightly closed but Virgil could still see the color. It was dark in the room and it was lit softly by fairy lights and the tv.
Each time they crossed a better lit part of the room, Virgil could see the light blush on Roman's face. Roman was hot normally but this was a whole different side Virgil didn't recognize but had gotten a glimpse of. Someone who was just as confused and maybe a little scared as he was. He was just another person, despite the fact he was hot as all hell.
This was the real Roman shining through.
Between the ending of the song and Virgil's own emotions running rampant, Virgil was breathing slightly heavier. The lighting, the song, Roman's voice, it was driving him crazy. When Roman sang the last word, they had stopped moving and made eye contact.
Virgil looked at Roman's eyes. Searching for something that could tell him that it was an act. Virgil couldn't find anything. It was comforting and scary. Roman kept his eyes on Virgil, but dropped his hand that he was holding and put it on Virgil's waist. Virgil put his own on Roman's shoulder. Roman looked down to Virgil's lips and then quickly back to his eyes.
Virgil felt like he couldn't breathe in the best way. Roman leaned in towards him....and then there was a shout from the bathroom.
"Hey! We are home!" Patton said. Virgil and Roman jumped back from each other. Roman composed himself and responded.
"Alright!" Virgil nodded. Did they really almost do that? Virgil sat down in their fort again. Roman crawled into it after him but he didn't sit behind Virgil like he normally did. Virgil gave him a look. "What?"
Virgil rolled his eyes and laid down on Roman's chest. He felt Roman suck in a breath and then let it go. He wrapped his arms around Virgil again. And that's how they fell asleep.

Sanguine
The Coles are probably the definition of a small dysfunctional family, even if they weren’t the worst in existence; they would probably be lauded as an example of the term. The Coles were a small family though. The father, Oliver Cole, was an asshole ex-football jock who bounced around in small paying jobs after wasting most of his life drinking, drugging and whoring. The daughter, Stacy Cole, was smart, but had many issues including anger, trouble with authority, and occasional suicidal thoughts, and was kicked out of many a school for disruptive behaviour. The son, Mike Cole, was innocent, and tried his best to be kind to anyone and everyone, however his own speech impediment, and slow nature only aided people to bully and belittle him, including his own father. The Coles were indeed a dysfunctional family. At least they were, until they got to the small town near the border between the United States and Canada, Sanguine. Welcome to Sanguine. You will stay. With the exception of the first chapter, each chapter only follows one character. The first chapter is the only chapter in which I will include 'Sides' where it follows a different character. This is a short Lovecraftian story, it won't go above seventeen chapters. Note: the book cover is my first attempt, it might not even remain like it is, I was just tired of seeing the standard 'no cover' thing on it.
