《Edge of Glory | Supergirl 1》Chapter 37

"What was once a symbol of hope is now a symbol of fear. Early this morning, Supergirl arrived at the scene of a crime at West National City Bank. But instead of the usual cheers, Supergirl's intervention was met with skepticism and fear. Some say Supergirl was under a mind-altering drug when she attacked the city. But she turned against our people once. The question on everyone's minds, what's to stop her from turning against us again?"
Cat shut off the T.V. turning back to the group of people in the room. Winn and Katie stood next to each other, almost like conjoined twins. Cat's eyes peer around the room, "First Sandy Bullock steals my bike at spin class and then the juice bar runs out of chard, and now this? I knew people would be slow to forgive Supergirl, but this is ridiculous. And now the crime rate in National City is up a whopping 40%."
Winn stutters out his question, "Do you think Supergirl has lost the public's trust for good?"
"Well, I suppose if Mel Gibson can present at the Golden Globes, then Supergirl can win the city back. This too shall pass." Cat waves for everyone to leave, "Ker-rah, go find me a juice bar with an abundance of chard." Winn rolls his eyes, leaving the room to get back to work.
"Uh... Miss Grant." Katie interrupts, "I already told you, Kara's out sick today."
"That was at 9 am."
"Generally, when people are sick it lasts the whole day."
"Well, that is unacceptable. Who will man the phones? I guess I will." Katie's cell phone vibrates, revealing a message from Siobhan to meet up with her, "Oh. You know, just as soon as I get back from this thing I have to do." She gave James a small smile before running out of the room.
Katie opened the door to Noonan's quickly spotting Siobhan sitting down, "I ordered us some drinks."
"Oh..." Katie sat next to her, "Okay. Was there something-"
"That four-eyed bitch in a kilt ruined my life."
Katie sighs, "Look, what's really going on?"
"No one will hire me. I've sent my resume out to every media outlet in town. And when I call to follow up, they're polite on the phone until they hear my name and then, dial tone."
Katie leaned on her hands, watching as Siobhan drank some more, "That's weird. Why?"
"Because that blond mean girl ratted me out to the Queen of All Media."
"Come on, Siobhan. That's crazy-"
"No. What's crazy is that I've spent my entire life trying to be a journalist, and in one fell swoop, Kara Danvers dashed all my dreams. I hate her, I hate her, I hate her."
"Okay." Katie grabbed Siobhan's hand before she could grab another drink, "Okay. Okay, listen. You just had a setback, okay? And you know what? All powerful people have setbacks. So, you just focus on what you really want. You know what? Once you have a goal, nothing's gonna stop you from going out and getting it."
Siobhan smiled at her, "You're right. Nothing can stop me. Thanks, Katie."
"It's no problem, Siobhan. You can always talk to me when you're upset." Katie grabbed Siobhan's hand, holding it softly.
🔥~🔥~🔥~🔥~🔥
Katie walked beside Kara and Alex, her eyes found Lucy, "Major Lane?"
"What are you doing here?"
"She's with me."
Alex turned around, "And who are you?"

"Colonel James Harper. United States Marines Corps."
"The Pentagon ordered a joint task force to investigate J'onn J'onzz's infiltration of this agency," Lucy says, her arms crossed over her chest.
"They wanna know what he's done and who knew about it. So everyone here will be interviewed. All activities, all communications scrutinized."
Katie rose an eyebrow, "Sounds like a witch hunt."
"This is an internal investigation done by the book to identify, remove and ultimately prosecute enemies of the state."
"And you're here as our legal counsel to protect our civil rights?" Kara questions, pointing at Lucy.
"She's here because this investigation required someone familiar with the players, someone, the government could trust to help cut through the subterfuge."
"I'm concerned everyone here has been compromised by him. You should be too." Lucy adds, looking at Alex.
"Which is why we need to figure out who knew what when and uncover anything J'onn J'onzz and his confederates were planning. We'll deal with the question of your loyalties later. Take the Martian to the interrogation room. We start with him."
Katie glanced at Alex, "You okay?"
"I'm worried." Alex admits, she turns to Kara, "What can you hear?" Katie watched as Kara tried to listen in, but she released a groan, "What? What's wrong?"
"They've done something." Kara states, "They're blocking me out."
🕐Time Skip🕐
Katie kept her arms crossed over her chest, "They've been in there for hours. We have to get in there."
"And implicate ourselves as accessories? We won't be any use to Hank if they lock us up with him."
Kara glares at the screen, "I'd like to see them try and lock me up."
Katie turns her head when she hears a commotion coming down the corridor, "They're taking him out of the room."
Once that was heard, Alex darted in that direction, "Where are you taking him?"
"Hey, you need to step back"
"I've worked for that man for the last two years." Alex states, "He's never endangered this planet. He's protected it."
"Two years?" Harper muses, "This alien is over 300 years old. Two years is like a coffee break to him."
"He saved my life more times than I can count. He's the best, most honorable man that I know."
"Where are you taking him?" Katie asks with force in her voice.
"Where he belongs. And Danvers, since you have so much to say about him, you're next."
🔥~🔥~🔥~🔥~🔥
Katie heard her phone buzz, she checked it to see a text from Siobhan, 'I think I might have fixed my problem.'
She quickly typed a response, 'That's good to know. You can tell me more about it later. I'm a little busy with my second job.'
Kara looks as the soldiers walk away, allowing her to whisper, "Vasquez, I have to hear what's going on in that room. Can you disable the sound-dampening tech they're running to block me?"
Vasquez stops typing at her computer, "I can't disable it. I won't. Colonel Harper and Major Lane have a job to do." She pulled off her earpiece and set it on the table, "And frankly, ma'am, I suggest you let them do it." She walked past Katie and Kara.
Katie's eyes fell down to the earpiece with a small smile, "Kara, do your thing." Katie watched as Kara listened in on the conversation, her eyes flickering around the screen. Suddenly, after long excruciating minutes, Kara's demeanor changed. She quickly turned around, "Supergirl!"

"Hey! What the hell is going on? You can't do this. Where is she going?" Kara demands, walking closer to her sister. Katie not far behind her.
"Same place I'm taking your little green friend. Project Cadmus."
"Cadmus?" Katie questions, her eyes squinting at him, "What is Project Cadmus?"
"What is Project Cadmus?" Kara questions, louder than Katie did, watching as they took her sister away.
"It would be a good time to have Captain Marvel here," Katie grumbled.
Kara turned her head to Katie, "Where is she anyway? I thought she said she'd be coming back a few days ago."
"And she did say that, but Winn is worried because she hasn't contacted him in a few days."
🔥~🔥~🔥~🔥~🔥
Katie looked at Kara, her arms crossed inside of their apartment, "Are you sure we should do this?"
"I'm sure." Kara states, "It's what we need to do."
A knock comes from the door, James moves forward to get it. Lucy slowly walks in, "I don't have time for this."
"So you're back in the army."
"And you're back in Kara's loft. I guess nothing's really changed for either of us." Lucy crosses her arms over her chest, her gaze moving to Katie and Kara, "Just tell me what was so important that I had to come here. What is this all about?"
Kara got off of the stool, "There's something you need to know." She unbuttons her shirt, revealing the large S underneath, and took her glasses off. Katie pulls her glasses off as well, igniting her hands in flames, then letting them extinguish.
Lucy gasps, looking over at James, "It all makes sense now. I just didn't wanna put it together. I didn't want it to be true."
"I'm sorry you had to find out this way," Katie says quietly, clasping her hands together.
Kara looked from Katie to Lucy, "But you're the only person that can stop Hank and Alex from being sent to Project Cadmus."
"Why would I help you?" Lucy questions, "You and Hank... Why do you all lie?"
Kara sighs heavily, "When you're an alien, and you've lost your world and you're dropped into a new one, you don't have a choice."
"And mutants are considered defects to other people, because we are born human, with problems in our DNA."
"When you are different, you're willing to sacrifice anything, everything, betray your fundamental instincts just to fit in. To belong somewhere, to find your place in this world."
Lucy kept her arms crossed over her chest, "If you have a problem fitting in, it's because you lie to people about who you really are."
"Lucy, are you really willing to let Hank become a science experiment? And who knows what they have planned for Alex."
Katie sighs, holding her arm with her hand, "I know you're feeling betrayed and alone, but if you go along with Jim Harper just to feel like you fit in, to feel like you belong somewhere, ultimately the only person you're betraying is yourself."
"It wasn't easy for me to show you who I really am, but I did it because I trust who you are, who you really are, under that uniform. And I trust you'll do the right thing."
"Okay." Lucy finally says after a long wave of silence, "Okay."
🔥~🔥
Katie pressed on the pedal of the motorcycle, she's never rode one before, and it was kind of refreshing to do something different. Although, she was uncomfortable with the fact that she was currently being shot at. She zoomed forward, stopping her motorcycle in front of the moving vehicle, praying that they actually stop. The brakes are heard being slammed down on, the men get out of the car, about to shoot Katie, when Kara rushes forward, knocking them out.
Katie gets off of the seat, pulling the helmet off, "Let's get them."
Katie stood back with Lucy, watching as Kara said her farewell to Alex. She watched as the brunette neared her, "Don't act like you're not going to get a goodbye hug from me too."
Katie laughs, bringing her in, "Good luck."
"Thank you."
"Don't worry. She'll be okay."
"I know." Kara nods, tears still in her eyes, watching as J'onn and Alex get on the motorcycles, "She has you. We both have you."
🔥~🔥~🔥~🔥~🔥
Katie was about to head back to the DEO with Kara and Lucy when her phone rang, "Hello?"
"Kathy, good, I need you back at CatCo, I would have asked your hobbit brother but he seemed to be busy with something else."
"May I ask why you need me back at CatCo?"
"I got this email from Ker-rah, but I'm sure it's not truly from her. Computer genius, come figure it out. I know you are good friends with Ker-rah so I am sure you can solve this for me."
Katie opened her mouth to respond but Cat hung up on the other end, "Okay..." She turned her gaze to the two females, "So-"
"Go." Kara spoke, "We'll handle it back at the DEO."

Katie walked into the office, almost no one was there and it kind of was nerve racking to her.
"Good." Cat says when she notices her, "Come here."
"What do you want me to do?"
"You did that study on typing, correct?"
Katie blinked, "You actually read my transcript? I mean-" She nodded, "Yeah."
Cat rose an eyebrow, "Sit." Katie sat down, "Found out who actually wrote this."
"Oh okay..." Katie worked silently as Cat watched her intently. She was nervous the whole entire time, she has fought aliens and this lady made her more uncomfortable than Indigo did. "The patterns match... Siobhan..."
"I figured as much." Cat pursed her lips, "Stay here."
Katie kept sat down, she watched as Siobhan walked in a few hours later, she stood when she saw Cat wave her in.
Siobhan turned her head to her, "Katie?"
Katie looked solemn, "I analyzed the typing speed and patterns on the hard drive. It didn't match Kara's, but it did match yours."
"I don't have very many regrets, Siobhan, but I do regret firing you the first time. I wish to God that I could fire you again with feeling."
"Miss Grant, I can explain-"
"No." Cat waved her finger in Siobhan's face, "Save it for the police. Because that's who you'll be talking to if you ever pull something like that again. Now, get out of my office and never come back."
🔥~🔥~🔥~🔥~🔥
Katie chased after Siobhan, trying to find her. She saw her go into one of the buildings, "Uh, do you know where a brunette went? About this tall. She looks really pissed." The man pointed up, handing another person a glass of whiskey. Katie ran upstairs, to see Siobhan by the edge of the building, a rumble of fear echoed inside of her, "Siobhan, no, no, no! Stop. Stop."
"Seriously?" Siobhan turns to her, drinking more of the alcohol in her hand, "I have too much self-esteem to kill myself. Killing someone else, on the other hand..."
"I'm sorry." Katie sighs, "What did you expect me to do?"
"I don't know. Not rat me out to freaking Cat Grant."
"You lied, Siobhan, okay? And you committed mail fraud or email fraud, which is potentially, like, a federal crime."
"You were supposed to be on my side."
"I was!" Katie cries, "I still am. Except, you know, Kara is my best friend. And you know what? No, I did this for you too. Because if this woulda worked, you would have regretted it. And I know that deep down you are a good person."
"You don't know me. You don't know anything. You said that I could have whatever I wanted and I have nothing. No job, no friends..." Siobhan backed up until she was pressing against the small edge, "I just want to scream-" Her heel snaps, causing her to fall back, releasing a loud scream as she did.
Katie ran forward, "Oh, God. No! No!" She was about to reveal her powers to her, when she saw that Siobhan's scream saved her, but caused the ground below to break apart.

Black Wind, White Lotus
In this world, there are haves and have nots. The former are pureblooded humans, some of whom are capable of manipulating qi, the mysterious energy that flows through every living creature, to miraculous results that defy the laws of nature and physics. Wen Feili was one such cultivator. However, she allied with the have nots- the anthropomorphic hybrids incapable of channeling qi-and dabbled in forbidden demonic arts, seeking to change the very composition of reality. This did not end well for her, and she was consumed by her own flames. A decade later, far in the northwestern mountains, her daughter Wen Fengli is working as a lowly servant of the minor Shuangshan sect. In between sweeping the floor and avoiding bullies, she secretly trains with a wooden sword, hoping to become a warrior cultivator at some point in the future. However, since she's part-human, part-wolf, it's just a pipe dream. ....or so she bitterly thought. However, one day a mysterious amulet that belonged to her mother falls into her hands. A deranged old master, a terrible conspiracy, a mysterious past? None of that matters to tomboyish wolfgirl, who only seeks to become stronger. She embarks on a journey of adventure and self-discovery, towards the mysterious southern lands where pure demi-humans are said to live...as spectre of war once again envelops the world of man. This is a Chinese-themed fantasy story set in a fictional world. You can classify it as xianxia, if you wish, but it's a rather low fantasy variant; the heavenly realm is silent, no one reached immortality in generations, and magical artifacts of old are locked away and feared. Magical beasts and spirits have been driven to the corners of civilisation, and "ordinary" abilities such as flying or controlling swords through telekinesis are considered spectacular feats. The main plot of this book revolves around a kemonomimi girl who seeks power, no matter the cost. This story also features multiple character pov, and will not always follow the perspective of the mc- there are two major plotlines, one connected to conspiracy and war ongoing in the political background of the presented world, and the other focusing on the main character's physical and metaphorical journey.
