《Edge of Glory | Supergirl 1》Chapter 27

Leah groaned in her sleep, groggily opening her eyes, "
Leah grabbed her bed sheets, staring at the robot, "Wh-what are you?"
Leah looked around to the room, "Where am I?"
Leah moved closer to it, "This was my Aunt's tunic. She used to wear it when she would put me and Kara to bed at night." She lifted the material, "Where did you get this?"
"I gave it to you."
Aunt Alura's voice startled Leah, "A-aunt Alura? How could you be here?"
"I stayed home every day while you recovered from the Argo fever. I tried to convince Kara, but she is much too stubborn."
"This can't be real. You died with the rest of Krypton."
"Oh, sweet Ka... You must have had terrible hallucinations from the fever. But it's over now. You're awake. You're safe." Alura pulled her niece in for a warm hug, "You're home."
Leah moved away from Alura, her eyes staring out the large window, "I'm on Krypton."
🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆
Katie had spent the night at Alex's apartment since it was closer to the DEO. She was sitting at her desk at work, "So Leah stayed with Kara last night?"
"Yeah." Winn looked up at the TVs as they released static.
"Where is Ker-rah? And why isn't she answering her cell phone?"
"Uh, you know, maybe she can't... We're actually in the middle of the worst solar storm in recorded history. It's just been scrambling communication signals all morning. I'm sure there's a... There's a good reason." Katie knew all too well about the solar storm, it was causing her bracelet to flash every few minutes, it was absorbing too much solar radiation, which was causing Katie to absorb more as well. She felt more lively because of it though.
"I know the reason. She's avoiding me. She's obviously afraid that I plan to retaliate because she drove my son away right when I was repairing my relationship with him. But I am a professional. I do not do upset. So you can tell Ker-rah that it is safe for her to resume her duties."
When Cat turned around, Winn sighs, spotting James, "Hey, hey, have you seen Kara? She, she still hasn't come in yet."
"No. I haven't been able to reach her either."
Katie stood up from her chair, walking over to them, "Okay, that is so not like Kara. How about Leah?"
Winn shook his head, "I haven't heard from her since last night."
All three spoke at the same time, "We should call Alex."
The group rushed to the apartments, Katie actually flew, she might as well use her powers when there was a lot of solar radiation in the air. She landed behind the complex, getting in her normal clothes, following them in.
"They're not out on DEO business."
Winn sighs, "There is nothing on the news about Supergirl or Captain Marvel."
"I got a bad feeling about this. Katie, you have your key?"
"Yeah-" Alex kicked open the door, "Nevermind. That works too."

"Kara!?" Alex calls out, pulling her gun out just in case.
"Oh my God!" Katie ran over to Kara and Leah, a weird alien connected to their chests.
"What... what is that?" Winn points at it.
"Don't touch it!" Alex demands, pulling her comm out.
Winn points at them, his body shaking, "They... they're still breathing. I-"
"This is Agent Danvers. I need a medical evac now."
Katie dropped down next to them, not listening to Alex and touched the parasite on Leah, it whipped out at her hand, "Oh my God! Can I light it on fire?"
Alex pulled Katie away from them, "No, you don't know what that could do to Kara and Leah."
A medic evac soon came to the room, taking Kara and Leah. Surprisingly Alex allowed James and Winn to come with them. Katie flew to the DEO right behind them.
"They were found unconscious. The organisms are gripping their torsos with over 100 pounds of pressure." Everyone rushed behind them, soon staring through a glass wall as the medics worked on them.
Hank came in, anger flashed on his face, "What the hell are these guys doing here?"
"Where Supergirl and Captain Marvel goes, we go."
"This is a top secret facility, Mr. Olsen. You think I'm gonna let the media waltz through here?"
Winn's hands went in the air when the gun was pointed at him, "Actually, I'm in IT. So, definitely not worth, uh, shooting. P-plus that's my girlfriend in there."
James faced Hank again, "If something happens to her, I'm coming back for you."
"Yeah, what he said," Winn speaks up but immediately recoils at the expression Hank had.
"If anything happens to her, I won't stop you. Get them out of here." Alex and Katie were pacing around the two girls, "You are clearly in need of a refresher course on base security protocol."
"You don't know them like we do, sir." Katie snaps up at him, "They're family."
Hank sighs, "And what's their condition."
"They're unresponsive to outside stimuli, but their brain activity is still normal. It's like their bodies are unaware that anything is wrong."
"What the hell is that thing?"
"I have no idea." Alex breathes out, her worry for her sister showing on her face, "But I think we know someone who does."
"Maxwell Lord?" Katie questions, following Hank and Alex, "You're joking. I don't believe that man did this to them."
"We don't know that." Alex snaps, pushing open the door to Max's cell room.
"Agent Danvers and the infamous Solar Flare. What a surprise. You haven't visited since you threw me in my collectible display case."
Alex stood calmly waiting for his glass door to open, once it did, she zoomed into the room, taking him down easily, "How do I get those things off of them."
"You may have to be a tad more specific."
"Don't test my patience, Max. You tried to kill Kara with Bizarro. I'm guessing you designed this new freak to finish the job and take out Captain Marvel."

"I'm flattered that I've made such a lasting impression on you, but the truth is I don't know what you're talking about."
Alex pressed her arm further against his neck, sneering in his face, "I advise you start to make yourself much more useful. And fast!"
"Alex, stand down!"
"He's got to be behind this. You know what he's capable of."
"Come on!" Hank snatches her away, "Come on! I also know that Max is a survivor. If he knew anything, he'd tell us to save his own neck."
"I never thought I'd say this, but... Thanks for the assist."
Hank glared down at him, "If we find out you're lying, Solar Flare gets to come back down here... Alone. And she likes to play with her fire."
Katie walked out next to Hank, "It's an alien parasite."
"What?"
Katie inhales deeply, "I'm a huge nerd like my brother, so-" She pulled her phone out of her pocket, opening her Tumblr page, "I've seen a picture of this thing before... It was only a drawing but-" She scrolled to the post, handing him the phone, "It only says alien parasite in the description."
Hank purses his lips, handing Katie her phone back, "I suggest you go back to your workspace for the day. We've got this covered."
🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆
Leah paced back and forth in the room, "This can't be happening. I have to get out of here."
Leah tried to fly, making her Aunt jump over to her, "Ka, please calm down."
"I don't have my powers. Whatever's behind this is mimicking the effects of Krypton's sun."
"We are on Krypton."
"What?" Leah looked at her Aunt incredulously, "No, someone is manipulating me by using my memories against me." Leah stopped in her tracks, her eyes falling on a small trinket on the table, "Do you see that?" She slowly walked over and lifted it up from the table, "I made it for my father when I was eight." She let out a small chuckle as nostalgia ran through her, "I even remember getting upset I couldn't get the wings right."
Alura put her arms on Leah's shoulder, "And Non told you it was perfect. And that he loved it, and you, with all his heart."
"He made me feel so proud. And so happy." Leah chuckled softly, "Like he always did."
"See?" Alura wrapped her arms around her, "You do remember."
"But I also remember saying goodbye to you on that launch bay. And hugging you so tight. Never wanting to let go. Because I imagined you were my mother that day. I've fantasized about all of this every day since I left. I don't know how this is happening, but I'm going to find out. And when I do, I'm going home."
🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆~🎆
The elevator pings, James, Winn, and Katie walk out of it. Winn was shaking his head, "It just feels wrong pretending everything is fine when Kara and Leah are back there fighting for their lives."
"Winn, this is their lives, okay. We all know that better than anybody. This is why we have to protect it for them."
"Ah, it's not just that. It's like... Leah and I just began this amazing relationship, and I never got to say I love her before she was attacked, and I never got to propose. Or have kids. Or grow old-"
"Winn." Katie put her hands on his shoulders, "Please don't think like that. They're gonna be fine, okay?"
Winn was fighting back tears, "Mm-hmm." He pushed past them over to his desk.
"Who allowed this cheap arrangement in here?" Cat took the bouquet of flowers off the table, noticing Winn, "And where have you been? And where is Ker-rah?"
"Kara, um..."
"Use your words."
"I... Yes, I... I... You know, I did see Kara, Miss Grant. She was bitten by a tic. She's had a horrible allergic reaction. Yeah. So, swelling, vomiting... Oh, God, she had these swollen ankles, it was awful. And I... You know, you should've seen the size of this tic. This thing was like... She... It was normal size. It was... You know, small... It was actually a bunch of little... Little ones like lice. It was... Kara's lice."
Katie slammed her hand against her face, quickly going over to Miss Grant, "Ignore my brother, he's just nervous for his date tonight with your daughter." She gave her a tight grin, "Kara is currently with Leah."
"Doing what?"
Katie glanced at Winn, cringing, "Leah is giving her fashion advice..."
"Hmm." Cat squinted her eyes at them, "Well, with my daughter or not. You tell her that she is expected to be back at her desk within the hour or she can kiss this little mediocre job goodbye."
"Yes, Miss Grant." Katie turned to Winn, "I'm gonna call, Alex."
"Yeah!"
Katie hurried off into a private space, "Alex, hey... So Miss Grant is going to fire Kara if she doesn't show up for work in the next hour."
"I-I'll think of something. Is she asking about Leah at all?"
"No, not at the moment. And hopefully, she doesn't."
"Okay, I'll figure something out. For now, please try to cover as much as you can."
"We're trying."
🎆~🎆~🎆
"Kara?" Winn questions, making James and Katie shoot their heads up in that direction, "Hey! You're back!"
"Sorry to disappoint you, Mr. Schott, but Miss Danvers is still incapacitated."
"Well... Well, then, who are you?"
J'onn looked back at Katie, knowing she figured out who he was, "An agent of the DEO sent to maintain Miss Danver's cover until she's able to return herself."
Winn moved his finger up to poke her face, "So, is that like an organic biomass?"
J'onn's hand shot up, gripping tightly on Winn's wrist, "Touch my face, lose your hand."
"Mmm-hmm. Mmm-hmm."
James walked in front of 'her', "Do you know what you're getting yourself into? I mean, have you ever been an assistant before?"
"I'm an elite agent of an intergalactic paramilitary force. I think I can handle Cat Grant."
Katie watched as he walked off, she released a groan, "Oh God, he's so screwed."
"He?" James and Winn question at the same time.
