《Edge of Glory | Supergirl 1》Chapter 4

Katie sat up abruptly at the sound outside of the room she was currently in, "Kara?"
Kara suddenly flew past the clear wall in front of her, punching an alien in the face, making Katie jump off the bed, the IV pulling out of her skin. She flinched covering where the needle once was. Katie pushes herself off the ground, pushing the door open when the alien flings across the room.
"Katie, stay inside."
Katie gaped at the alien, "Uh, yeah, good idea." She released a scream when the alien hit the glass beside her, as she ducked back into the room.
After Kara defeated the alien, she walked into Katie's medical room, "Hey, sorry about the noise."
"No, it's fine." Katie waved it off, watching the agents take the alien away, "Do you know when I can leave? Winn has left me over a hundred messages."
"Just leave." Kara shrugs, "I mean, I do all the time."
"But-"
"How about I fly you home?" Kara grins, clapping her hands together, "Come on, this time you have a heads up."
"As long as Henshaw doesn't kill me for leaving, then yeah, let's go."
Kara held Katie's wrist, pulling her along, "When we get outside, hold onto me okay. I'll catch you if you fall, but I don't want to have that accident."
Katie nods slowly, "I hope to dear god I don't fall, if I do I'm never flying with you again."
Kara landed in her room, Katie's grip on her tight, "Katie-Katie, death grip."
Katie released her, "I am so sorry."
Alex's mouth dropped open, "Katie... Uh, Kara, you shouldn't have brought Katie, she should be in the DEO-"
"She was cooped up in there." Kara says, "She needs to get out."
"She somehow has powers that were given to her by a man, who clearly knew this would happen to her." Alex sighs, pushing her hair from her face, "I already have a lot to worry about right now, what happens if she loses control? We do not know the full extent of her powers, she absorbed a radiation blast as if it was nothing."
"So she's a metahuman." Kara shrugs off, "I'll keep a close watch on her, please, Katie isn't a DEO agent, she can't be cooped up inside that building like a prisoner."
Alex bit her lip, hands on her hips, "Fine, but mom is about to show up."
"Oh, Mrs. Danvers is going to be here." Katie smiles, "Is it for Thanksgiving?"
Alex nods, "Yes, I'm sorry. I'm just... I'm freaking out."
"Alex, I have seen you take down a human-sized bug without a weapon. This is going to be fine." Kara laughs.
Katie's eyes widen, "You have reached a new level of badass in my eyes."
Alex laughed, shaking her head, "Last year, she was mad at me for you not dating enough. Okay? I can't even imagine what she's gonna do to me for you coming out as Supergirl. And how do you think she is going to react when she finds out you told more people?" Alex moves her hand to refer to Katie.
"She seemed fine on the phone. At least she's making pie."
"Yeah." Alex groans, "I'm sure your favorite."
"Chocolate pecan pie is the best dessert in the galaxy. And as someone who's been to twelve different planets, I mean that literally."
Katie's mouth drops open, "You've been to twelve different planets? Oh wow, that is just awesome."

"Yeah, you should-"
Kara's sentence is stopped by a knock at the door. Alex grabs Katie by her arms, "Oh, God." Kara happily skipped over to where their mom was standing behind the door, "No, you need to change out of that..."
"It's fine. It's fine."
When the door opened, Katie walked over, smiling kindly, "Eliza!"
"Katie, it's nice to see you again." Eliza gave Kara a hug, "My girls! Oh, my best, favorite, wonderful girls!"
"Oh..."
"Alex, come here." Eliza hugged Alex, but only for a brief moment, "It's so good to be here. Oh! You both look so great. You always looked great in blue." Eliza gave Alex a side glance, "And you look a little tired, sweetie. Is the lab keeping you busy?"
"Yeah." Alex looked a little upset.
Katie noticed and hopped in, "Eliza, how was your flight?"
"Um, it was a little bumpy."
"Ooh." Katie cringed, "I hate when that happens."
"Yeah, I hit some crazy air pockets when I was flying back from the... The... The place I was at."
"You're doing great, Kara."
"You really... Do you really think so, Mom?"
"Of course."
Katie's phone buzzed, "Oh, radio podcast is going on right now. Do you mind if I listen to it?"
"No, not at all. It would be nice to speak with my daughters."
Katie smiled, "Kara, I'll be in your room."
"This is Leslie Willis, coming to you alive and wired from Catco Plaza. The week of Thanksgiving, which means... Ah, it is time for my annual list of Things I Am Not Grateful For, and this year's list is only one item, Supergirl. The blue-and-red abscessed tooth in the otherwise gleaming smile that is National City! How much do I despise, I mean loathe, her whole, "Look at me, I'm a-dork-able" thing. And that hideous, like, rejected-from-the-Olympics figure skating outfit she wears? I mean, a skirt and tights? Puh-lease. Seems like overkill, especially since no one is trying to get in there. And who would that be? You know, who's hombre enough to puncture the Chastity Belt of Steel? Or is what's required a softer touch? I mean, she does kind of give off a Sapphic vibe, with that big ol' butch "S" chest plate. I mean, how would that even work with an alien? I mean, is everything the same down there, or are we talking tentacles? Maybe it's time for a break. Or a makeover."
"Oh dang." Katie mumbles, pulling her headphones out, tired of listening, "That girl has problems."
♕~♕~♕~♕~♕
Winn ran over to his sister, picking her up off the floor in a hug, "Oh thank God you're okay."
"Yeah, I'm just fine."
Winn pulled away from her, staring down at her, "Did they find out what's wrong?"
Kara shook her head, "Alex said her blood sample analysis should be done by the end of the day, hopefully."
"So, how was breakfast with your mom?"
"Foster mom. And great. She's amazing. But Alex keeps waiting for this, like, bomb to go off. And maybe I'm oblivious, but...What?"
"It's just... It's nice when we talk about a metaphoric bomb for a change." Winn laughs.
"So, have you figured out what you two are doing for Thanksgiving?"
Katie's mouth turns into an 'o', leaning back in her chair, "Yeah, uh, orphan Thanksgiving."
Winn nods, "Literally, Thai food and Orphan Black marathon."
"Alone? What about your family?"

Katie and Winn glance at one another, "Core wound, Kara."
"Friends?" Kara's becomes shocked when the two just shrug awkwardly, "Winn! Katie!"
"What?"
"No!"
"Yes."
"No, that's crazy! You're coming over. We're gonna have a Friendsgiving."
Katie shook her head, "No, Kara, really it's fine. Winn and I always do this. You don't have to."
"Well, I want to. Seriously. You can be a buffer between Alex and Eliza. And we can watch Orphan Black after."
Kate cuts her off by mistake, "What is Leslie Willis doing in Cat's office?"
"Super hearing friend?" The elevator behind them beeps, it was Cat's private elevator. Kara was too busy listening to Leslie and Cat talk that she didn't notice the blonde that waltzed in the room. Winn's mouth drops at the sight in front of him, "Oh wow..."
Katie smacked Winn's chest, "Staring."
The girl smiled and looked down, walking past them and headed towards Cat's office. Kara blinks when Leslie leaves the room, stopping in front of the woman.
"Oh, look, the Princess is here."
"Nice to see you too, Willis." The blonde crossed her arms over her chest, "Let me through."
"As you wish." Leslie gave her a mock bow, before storming out.
"Leah!" Cat gave a genuine smile, as she gave the female a hug.
Katie's jaw dropped, "Leah..."
Kara stared at the blonde, looking as if she was about to burst into tears, "Ka..."
"Wait, did I miss something?" Winn questions, looking between his sister and Kara.
"Leah is from Krypton," Katie answers when Leah suddenly turned her head to stare at the three. Her eyes fell on Kara before she turned back to her foster mother.
"Another... Kryptonian..." Winn blinks rapidly and shakes his head, "Okay... Wow."
Kara began to listen to the two in the office.
"Honey, what are you doing here?"
"I am in need of a job and thought you'd be the best person to work under."
"She's getting a job here." Kara breaths out.
"You want to work under mommy?"
"Yes, mother, I want to work here. It's a good start."
"Fine. Kerah!"
Kara flinched her head back, "Ow." She speed walked into Cat's office.
"Find my daughter a job." Cat walked to her desk. "Leah, Kerah, Kerah, Leah."
Leah took her hand out, smiling, "It's nice to meet you, Kara."
Kara took a step back, not expecting her to say the correct name, "Uh... yeah, Ka-Leah!"
Cat raised an eyebrow, "Right."
Kara and Leah left the room, with Winn and Katie watching them, but the twins decided not to follow.
Kara turned to face Leah when she suddenly was engulfed in a deep hug. "Kara. I thought-"
Kara returned the hug, wanting to cry, "Ka."
"It's Leah now." Leah pulled away, putting her hands on Kara's cheeks, "Look at how you've grown."
"Right back at you." Kara laughed, a tear slipping down her cheek, "The last time I saw you, you were twelve."
"And so were you." Leah cried, but it was covered with laughs, "So you're being like your cousin? Supergirl?"
"And you're wearing lead glasses."
"My mom questioned me when I requested them made like that." Leah smiled, taking the golden rims off, "But the mom, of course, had to style them."
"We need to catch up!" Kara exclaims, "Come to my Friendsgiving, the more the merrier."
"That sounds amazing." Leah gave Kara another hug, "As long as you don't make me a suit."
"Tell my friend Winn that." Kara laughs, "He'd probably make you the next superhero."
"That cute man that was beside that gorgeous girl?"
"Yeah, they're twins." Kara looked around, "Uh, I'm actually about to go get food, would you like to come?"
"Sure." Leah tugs at her hat, "I'd love that."
♕~♕~♕~♕~♕
Leah stopped at the entrance, her hand pressed against the door before Kara could walk in, "My mom, she's still alive isn't she?"
"Yeah, you just saw Miss Grant-"
"I mean my real mom, Kara." Leah crossed her arms over her chest, "Astra."
"How did you?"
"Kal-El told me," Leah says quietly, her heart beating fast.
Kara looked down, the two grew up together, the girls even stayed together after Astra's disappearance, like sisters, "I didn't know he knew."
Leah pulled the door open, allowing Kara to walk in first, "She's fighting against you."
"I don't want to talk about it."
"She's my mother, Kara."
"And she's my aunt." Kara points out, "We're family, and that is something we can talk about later."
Leah noticed how Kara paused when she walked in, she glanced over at the male sitting down, "Oh, I see."
"Huh?" Kara twisted her head towards her cousin, "What? See what?"
"You like him." Leah giggles, pulling her in for a hug, "How I missed this."
"I missed you too Ka." Kara glanced at James, "Uh..."
"Go talk to him. I'll get the order."
Alex suddenly walked in, pulling Kara aside, close to Leah, "Okay. I figured it out. Mom is furious that you've come out, but she's pretending that she isn't."
Leah smiled, taking the bag, "Thank you."
"Have you considered that Eliza really isn't mad? It's not like we're still kids that she has to worry about." Leah leaned against the counter, watching the two.
"She has always come down hard on me for not protecting you."
"Then maybe it's time for you to come out. Tell her who you really are. What you really do." Kara states.
"Okay, wait. You want me to tell her that I'm a DEO agent? No way. I can't. Officially, we don't exist."
"Look, if she is mad at you 'cause she thinks that you're not looking after me, then tell her the truth. That your entire career, everything you've ever done in your life, it's all been to protect me. You've got to give her a chance."
Alex smiled, looking down, "Protecting you isn't my actual job."
"Yeah, but you have fun when it is." Kara glanced at Leah, "Oh and Alex." She walked around Alex, putting her hands on Leah's shoulders, "This is my cousin Ka-El."
"But I prefer Leah now."
Alex stands in shock, "Oh, uh, I'm Alex Danvers." Leah shook Alex's hand.
"It's nice to meet the person who has been taking care of my cousin."
"It's nice meeting the woman who Kara spoke about quite often when we were kids."
Kara pushed Alex, "Don't tell her that."
"All good things I hoped." Leah laughs when she suddenly hears the sound of screaming coming from outside. "Kara."
The three ran out, a helicopter was going haywire in the sky. "Clear the street." Kara ran off in the opposite direction. Leah stared up, refusing to leave, "Leah, come on-"
"I have the same powers as Kara, I'll be fine."
Kara went for the helicopter but the man fell out of it, Kara was preoccupied trying to get the woman. Alex stares wide-eyed, "SUPERGIRL!"
"I won't reach him in time!" Kara yells out.
Leah's eyes widen, she pulls her glasses off and hands them to Alex, "I've got this."
"Leah-"
Leah flew into the air, her hat falling off, hair flying around after the ponytail fell out, she pulled her coat off as she flew towards the man. She caught him, "You're going to be okay."
The man's grip became tight as she landed, her eyes widened when people took out their phones, snapping photos, but she quickly flew back up to Kara. When a bolt of lightning hit Kara, making Leah scream out. "NO!"

Blood Quest - A LitRPG
Leon's family has been diagnosed with a new type of incurable blood disease. It's an absolute death sentence and when it turns aggressive, you only have a few more years of painful life left to live. His mother has just begun the last years of the disease when a person supposedly comes back from death with supernatural abilities. He talks about a choice you get after death--get an extra chance to come back to life, or die. Even with Leon's diminishing life span, he won't consider the option of going there, until he meets another survivor who had the same goal as him and succeeded. Leon has a choice to make—die now for a chance to save his mother, or die in a few years, where the disease rapidly melts his muscles from his own body. He enters a game-like world, a sort of limbo, where his ultimate goal is to climb the tower of Katastroph before his mother's time runs out. There are a few problems with this though. The tower is almost impossible to beat, if you die you won't revive, and only three people in over twenty years have actually made it back. Leon has two years to climb the tower, with the help of the few people willing to try, while Ai, the tutorial guide, makes things harder for them. ***** The story starts pretty dark but goes onto a lighter tone. Then (more) dark again. Disclaimer: This story is an experimental project and I hope to get any and all feedback you can give me. Warning: First draft. Chapters tend to be between 3400-4100 words long (about 8-11 A4-pages). Mentioning it since I've seen it in other fictions :P Sometimes they're shorter, sometimes they're longer. ******************************** CHAPTER RELEASES UPDATE: As the first "book" in the series is done, I'm going to release coming chapters somewhat sporadically, and when Writathon ends, I'll probably go back to publishing one chapter per weekend. We'll just have to wait and see! I hope you enjoy the story! I really appreciate all comments and feedback, so if you have anything to say, feel free to voice it :) ************ [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]
