《One Last Fight》I Don't Think She Understands How Much We Love Her

While she sat out in the car, crying as she read over a letter she wasn't aware existed, I stood next to Chase as we watched over her. He wanted to make sure she was okay just as much as I did. For years, I knew Bo wanted some type of closure. She thought watching Seth receive his death sentence would make up for the loss of her mom, but it didn't.

Chase had questions about everything. They were questions I answered because I was unsure if Bo would tell him herself. I wasn't sure if she would be in the right state of mind at the moment, so I broke it down the best I could. He seemed to understand. There were questions he had that I couldn't answer. I wouldn't be able to until my curly-haired wife came in and gave them to me.

When she moved out of the car, Chase was hurrying out of the door to rush to her side. She threw her arms around him the second she saw him. I saw her back shaking as she sobbed into his hold. It made me worry. It made me cry.

I moved toward where she stood in his arms. Then her caramel eyes left his chest, and her embrace consumed me. The smile on her face made me worry even more than before. It made me wonder what happened. It made me think about the words written on the page.

"Are you okay?" I mumbled into her ear.

She pushed away to look at me. "I love you. I love all of you so much. Today has made me realize, unlike any other, how lucky I am to have what we have together. All of us."

"What did that letter say?"

"Words I longed to hear from my mom," she whimpered. "It makes me feel like she isn't so far away anymore."

I kissed the top of her head as I pulled Chase toward us. And we stood there for god knows how long. The day fell into night. Crickets were chirping in the bushes around us. Stars flashed above us as they scattered the obsidian sky with balls of gas that my family adored looking at.

For the first time, I felt small in this big world. I realized how tiny I was compared to the love I had for the two people in front of me and the third one growing inside of my wife. Until now, I have never realized how perfect things can be because I saw the world as a ball of depression.

The ocean covered over seventy percent of our earth. I made myself believe it was tears of all of the people it had done wrong. I never realized there was a sea of emotions I hadn't dived into because I wasn't wearing goggles to protect my eyes from the hatred blinding them.

As I look at the happiness falling from my girl's eyes in liquid form, I realize the oceans were created from the fallen tears of sadness. There are streams glowing in the sunlight, and brooks shining in the moonlight. Tonight, more than ever, I see the world as more than what it has done wrong to the people I love, to me, and I realized, I am not that small.

"She left me forty-thousand dollars," she chokes.

I push her away. "What?"

"Forty-thousand dollars," she showed me the paperwork in her hands.

Chase's eyes widened. "What are you going to do with it?"

Her caramel eyes focused back on me. "I am making you and Maverick savings accounts. When you both choose to leave home for college or whatever you decide, you will have access to those funds."

I smiled down at her as she looked back at Chase. "I think twenty-thousand will be enough to make sure you are comfortable."

He hugged her. "You are the best thing to ever happen to me."

A light-hearted feature settled over her face as she wrapped her arms around his waist. "How do you feel about carving those pumpkins tonight?"

"Are you sure you aren't tired?"

"I think I'll sit back and take pictures," she chuckled.

"Can we do it outside?" He asks.

"Why not?"

We watched as he raced inside to grab the supplies. I grabbed her wrist, tugging her toward me. She stared up at me with stars gleaming in her eyes. My blues searched her face as I kept silent. Neither of us said a word as we soaked in one another. My arms wrapped around her because I didn't know how else to express the feelings I have for her.

"Momma, where are the carving kits?"

"Top drawer," she yelled out. "Left side of the kitchen sink."

I could hear his feet running back across the porch as he went inside of the house. My fingers curled with her as I led her toward the porch swing. She settled on top of the yellow pillows, smiling as Chase came back out with the pumpkins.

"Are you sure you don't want to do one?"

Her head moved back and forth. "Kinnick is going to do one, though."

He grinned at me. "Which one do you want?"

I looked at the pudgy pumpkins on the porch before pointing toward the smallest one. Bo was laughing as he started digging into his own. Neither of us seemed to mind the pumpkin seeds scattered along the light blue wood of our porch. What was important was the memories, not the mess.

"How about I grab those caramel apples?" Bo stood up from her seat. "Does anybody want a drink?"

Chase called out for Bo's famous lemonade. Even though we were past summer, he insisted she continued to make it. She wasn't going to turn him down. So, there was always a pitcher full inside of the fridge with a label that said, 'made with love.'

"She waddles like a penguin," he snickers as she walked inside.

I laughed. "Yeah, she does."

"We got lucky," he looks up at me. "Didn't we?"

"Luckier than I think we will ever know."

"I don't think she understands how much we love her," he frowns. "Do you think she will ever realize it?"

"Probably not," I shrug. "But we will never know how much she loves us, either."

"I don't have to," his head moved back and forth. "I can feel it."

My body slumped as I smiled. "I can too."

"It is a great feeling," he chuckles. "I hope she feels it too."

"I think she does," I nodded to the girl walking toward us with a smile on her face.

He looked at her with happiness as she brought his lemonade. A batch of caramel apples sat on a plate, ready for us. She handed us each one, asking us to be careful as she placed plates in our slimy hold. The phone in her hand snapped pictures as she looked at us.

"This is our first Halloween together," she squealed. "I am so excited!"

"Only a few more days," I looked at her. "Then we have Thanksgiving and Christmas. Not only will be celebrating the baby's birthday but yours."

"And we have Chase's the day after we win our trial."

He looked up at her with a grin. "I don't need a party."

"Yes, you do," she nods. "We are going to eat a lot of ice-cream cake and have plenty of presents for you to open."

"Please don't sing, though," he pleads.

Bursts of laughter broke free from my lips, but he was quick to protest his statement. "You are a good singer! I just meant, you shouldn't sing because it could affect the baby."

She laughed. "You are a little shit!"

A cheesy smile stole his expression. "You do suck a little."

A gasp left her lips. "Kinnick, do you hear this?"

"He isn't wrong," I shrugged, laughing as she smacked my shoulder.

She reached for a bunch of pumpkin seeds before she tossed them at us. "Look at my pumpkins! They are the cutest in the bunch."

"Wrong move," Chase gathered a bunch of the pumpkin slime into his hands. "There is two of us and one of you."

"Chase Cooper if you throw that at me, I will be forced to retaliate."

He shrugged. "I'll take my chances."

The seeds fell from her curls as he pelted her. I laughed as she looked at us with shock. "That is it! You are getting your asses beat."

"Me?" I choked. "I did nothing wrong."

"You also didn't stop him!"

Chase shot off of the porch and I wasn't too far behind him. He ran around the side of the house to hide, but I looked around for my wife. The only problem was neither of us knows what happened to Bo. My heart raced as the night fell silent. It made me worried something happened. This is why I couldn't play around. My anxiety sky-rocketed at the idea of my girl being hurt.

"She has the hose!" Chase came running toward me with terror written on his face. "Run!"
