6: 12 PM, DECEMBER 1984

It was one month later, Y/n had came to Hawkins. It was Christmas time and she was beyond excited. She lived with the Byers because Joyce had an extra room. Y/n warmed up to the teens, especially Steve, and becoming friends with Nancy and Jonathan. Hopper and Joyce tried to keep the girls on a down low, only going out in public with a trusted person. She worked on her vocabulary with Joyce, Joyce taught her how to use things around the house and Eleven taught her how to control her powers in other ways.

Nancy took Y/n shopping and such, trying to explain teenage things to her. Teaching her how to use makeup and pick out her own clothes. Steve took her out all the time, he tried to show her around town and wanting to introduce her to the movie theater, knowing her love for movies.

It was the evening of the Snowball and Nancy came over with a bunch of things, explaining that her and Jonathan were helping out at the dance, she asked Y/n if she wanted to help and she nodded, not really knowing what the Snowball was. Nancy smile and took her to her room. Nancy showed her two dresses, a pink one and a black one. "What is this?" Y/n asked, confused.

"It's a dress! We were it to formal events, such as the Snowball, which we also have to dress up for." Nancy explained, getting a bag of makeup of and a two curling irons. "So, what is a Snowball nd a formal events?" Y/n asked once more.

"The Snowball is the dance for the middle school and a formal event is kinda like a fancy time, were everyone dresses up and looks fancy." Nancy explained wiping Y/n's face with a wipe, then doing her eyebrows.

"Oh, so everyone where's these dresses?" Y/n asked, scrunching her nose as nancy plucked her eyebrows, trying to get them their right shape.

"Not everyone, boys were something different, most girls were dresses though." Nancy explained, finishing up and curling her eyelashes. Then she handed Y/n the mascara tube. Y/n smiled, knowing exactly what to do, she applied the mascara and Nancy called Joyce in. Y/n finished up as Joyce walked in. Nancy talked to her about her plans and Joyce offered to do Y/n's hair.

As Joyce did Y/n's hair, Nancy finished her makeup and did her own hair. After Joyce finished with Y/n's hair, she hugged her and left for the kitchen. As Y/n waited for Nancy to finish, she heard Joyce call her name, she went to the kitchen to she her on the phone.

"Y/n, sweetie, it's for you! Just put it to your ear and talk." Joyce explained, handing her the phone and walked out of the room. "Um, hello?" Y/n asked.

"Y/n! hey! it's Steve." She heard through the line. "Hi Steve." She giggled. "Um, do you wanna hang out tonight? I have to pick up Dustin and drop him off at the Snowball and I have nothing else to do. I can come by your house after?" He explained.

"Uh, yeah. Nancy, Jonathan, Joyce and Will are taking me to the Snowball and we are going to help, maybe you can meet me there?" She told steve.

"Yeah, I can do that. Um, just watch for Dustin, once you see or talk to him, come outside and we can go do something." He explained, she smiled.

"Okay, I have to go finish getting ready. I will met you there." She said. They exchanged their goodbyes and she went back to her room, telling Nancy.

Nancy was happy for the two, even though Y/n didn't know anything about romance life, nor she didn't even know what a boyfriend was, though she did know what a kiss was, seeing them in movies.

"Y/n, do you know what a boyfriend is?" Nancy asked, handing her the black dress with her necklace and heels. "no." She replied, going behind the standing curtain, putting her dress on, and the shorts Nancy said to wear under.

"Well, a boyfriend is someone you care about a lot, like you enjoy their company and you are romantically involved with. It's someone you can always turn to, you can always trust them. They are very special to you." Nancy tried to explain while Y/n finished and came from behind the curtain. "Are you my boyfriend?" Y/n asked, nancy laughed.

"No, silly. A boy! It's kinda like me and jonathan, how we are always with each other and we care a lot about each other, and we are romantically involved.. kinda." She said, not knowing how to explain it.

"Romantically involved?" y/n said, unimpressed. Great, way to go Nancy, now she's gonna be asking everyone questions. nancy thought to herself while Y/n put her shoes on.

"Romantically involved, meaning they love each other and they hug, kiss, and hold hands and go on dates." Nancy corrected and explained, while changing into her dress.

"Dates?" Y/n got more and more confused and frustrated at not understanding. She normally got frustrated at herself for not knowing things. She felt bad for always asking questions, growing jealous of others her age who knew all about the modern world.

"It's okay, just maybe ask steve later, he'll know what to say." Nancy said as Y/n gave her a glare. Nancy laughed, finishing up and putting her shoes on. "You will have a great time with steve, later tonight." Nancy reassuring her. She smiled as they walked out of the door, Joyce taking pictures as always. Finally ready for the Snowball.

Joyce drove Jonathan, Nancy, Y/n and Will to the Snowball about 30 minutes early, so they can help set up the dance. Soon, Y/n and Will started to play around, Will dancing with Y/n.

After the Snowball finally opened, Y/n went to Nancy as Will went to Mike and Lucas. Hanging out with Nancy for a while. about 15 minutes into the dance, Dustin and Steve pulled up.

"Alright buddy, here we are. Remember once you get in there." Steve started, starring at Y/n through the gymnasiums doors, seeing her laugh with Nancy. Steve smiled seeing Y/n in a beautiful dress for the first time. Well, she was always beautiful to him but tonight she looked extremely nice in her dress.

"Pretend like I don't care." Dustin finished, catching Steve's eyes on Y/n, smirking at the teenaged boy. "You don't care." Steve repeated back at Dustin. "I don't care."

"There you go my friend, you're learning." Steve said, looking at her once more. "You know, you suck at listen to your own advice." Dustin said, checking his hair in the mirror.

"What?! What do you mean?" Steve said leaning back, watching Dustin fix his hair. "You like y/n and it's so obvious and you show her you care!" Dustin said, Steve rolled his eyes. "Okay, so what if I do!? It's different. I'm waiting." Steve replied. "How? How is it different exactly? What are you waiting for huh?" Dustin looked over at steve.

"It's just different, okay? she needs the care and attention, she was basically a lab rat for who know how long, she's pretty much a toddler in a teenaged girls body! she needs positive attention, and I don't mind waiting for her to warm up and understand to the real world. I'm waiting until after she feels comfortable and knows more then 80 words. God, the poor girl probably doesn't even know the terms 'boyfriend and girlfriend.' I just feel like it's the best thing to do." Steve rambled, Dustin sighed, knowing he cared for her and it's best to not get that involved, he knew Steve was right.

"Okay, you're right sorry but you do like her." Dustin laughed. "yeah, I do. she's just.. she's sweet, you know. Every time I see her, something just screams inside me, Saying to protect and take care of her. I don't know, it's complicated." Steve laughed. Dustin checked his hair one more time.

"Alright, hey. You look great! you're gonna get in there." Steve started. "Yeah!" Dustin said, listening to Steve. "and look like a million bucks and you're gonna slam them dead." Steve said.

"Like a lion!" Dustin growled, Steve made a face at him. "Yeah, don't do that." Steve said, Dustin nodded, awkwardly smiling. "Alright, good luck." Steve shakes Dustin's hand, Dustin nods. "You too." He said, hopping out of the car and entertaining the dancing. Steve parked his car on the side of the school. Wearing his skin-tight jeans and a nice red long sleeve sweater.

Dustin, making his way inside, then telling Y/n that Steve was waiting out front. She said her goodbyes to Nancy and waving at Johnathan, thanking Dustin.

She looked at the floor on the way out, smiling as Steve fixed his hair quickly in his mirror, seeing Y/n on her way, Y/n looked up, making eye contact with Steve and smiling. She waved, he smiled and laughed as she made it to him.

"Hey, Steve. What do you want to do?" She started. he smiled at the girl, laughed and grabbed her hand, heading to the side of the school. He arrived at a ladder on the wall. He climbed it, both him and Y/n in a fit of giggles.

"Common Y/n!" he said, she laughed. She took of her heels and threw them up, then climbed the ladder onto the roof of the school. It was beautiful, woods for miles and miles and you could see the town lights and hear the music from below. A muffled new song played, 'Time after time' by Cyndi lauper, Y/n turned to Steve.

"Do you wanna dance?" He asked she made a worried face. "I- i don't know how to..." She said hugging her arms, embarrassed and shivering from the cold.

"It's okay i'll teach you." He said calmly with a smile, he placed Y/n's hands on his shoulders and he pulled her close, putting his hands on her waist. Y/n blushed and smiled, resting her head on his chest as they swing back and forth.

"You know, you look amazing tonight Y/n." Steve complimented her, she looked up at Steve. "Thank you." She smiled before she made worried face.

"Steve, my stomach feels weird. It doesn't hurt but it feels weird." She said. "Do you have butterflies in your stomach?" He asked, laughing. She looked at him extremely scared, at the thought of butterflies in her stomach.

"It's- it's a metaphor, there isn't actually butterflies in your stomach. It just feels like that, it happens when your nervous." He said, trying not to alarm her. She nodded, in relief that there wasn't actually butterflies in her stomach.

"You know, I have them too." He laughed, she laughed with him, not saying anything. They stood there, dancing on the school roof to the muffled music below. They were both happy and quite, enjoying the presents of each other.

Once they got tired, Steve drove Y/n back to the Byers, hanging out in her room, talking as he laid down on her bed, she cuddled into his side, he had his hands around her, as she feel asleep.

Steve looked at her, knowing he should go home and as much as he would love to stay, he felt it would be wrong. So he got up, careful not to wake her. Putting two blankets over her, knowing it's cold in December nights, he looked at her once more.

"Gosh, I'd do anything for you." He quietly laughed at himself, knowing he was way to deep already. "Goodnight Y/n." He said, pressing a kiss on her forehead. Leaving her, and in hopes that one day they could be officially together and share the same, mutual feeling.
