《Mindful Secrets》Chapter 2 - The New Kid

I arrived at school about ten minutes ago. I was checking my schedule to see what I had today. I had homeroom in Algebra with Mr. Connen. Then, I had Chemistry with Mr. Lyoen for an hour. After that, Geography with Mrs. Kirkley for about an hour followed by PE for an hour and a half with Mr. Albern. Lastly, I had Calculus with Ms. Ginfrey for about an hour and a half.
Lunch happens right before Geography and that was about it. There was about half an hour before I would actually need to go to homeroom. I decided to go to my locker and wait over there. It was closer to homeroom actually. I just don't know why I can't learn anything else.
I've already learned all of the things in high school. I'm not say I'm like a genius but everything is literally the same and even if it isn't, you can literally find the answer by looking at the past year. There's nothing new to learn for me. I don't know what's in store for me in college though. It might be the same or it might be different.
It doesn't make a difference actually. Suddenly, I felt something hit me and a quiet 'umph' sound. "Ah, I'm so sorry!", I heard someone say before they ran away. I didn't even get a good look at their appearance at all. They just appeared and dissappeared so quickly. I did notice something odd though.
There was a book on the ground where the fur had ran into me. I grabbed it and checked for a name. No name on the front cover nor the back. I don't advise anyone to snoop around but I decided to open the book to see if there was name there. I didn't find a name.

I did find drawings and they varied from every species. There were bears, dogs, horses, sharks and a lot more. It was always signed with a JR symbol at the bottom of each drawing. Probably their initials. Looking at the drawings, it got me thinking about something. Why are they all shirtless?
No, seriously. Every page I turn shows a muscular fur with no shirt on and a very, very defined bulge in their pants. I know artists have the ability to draw anything they want but I think this goes a bit too far on the imagination scale. I close the book and placed it in my bag. If I find them, I can at least return their book.
I made it to my locker after a few minutes and decided to open it. Looking inside, there wasn't much in it. I wasn't the type to hoard stuff and put it into my locker. I like to keep my place clean and organised. I grab some books in my bag that I didn't really need and placed them in the locker.
I closed my locker and leaned against it, waiting for the bell to ring. In the meanwhile, I take out my phone and decided to search stuff on the Internet. I don't really have any friends and I'm not willing to give my phone number out to anyone. I'll only ever give it to furs I trust with my life. I won't give it to those that just wants an apparent 'popularity boost'.
I still don't see what others see in me. Scrolling through the Internet, I find some interesting blogs and some books that interested me a lot. I scrolled through forums that chatted about different topics varying from games to worst memories. I didn't even notice the time. When I did, I turned off my phone and placed it back into my pocket.

After that, I headed into the classroom just as the bell rang. I was the first inside since no one wants to come in early to class. I pick the desk at the far back since I don't want to be the center of attention. I sat there silently as I waited for everyone to come in. It was about 10 minutes before the class was filled.
Even then, only one desk was left unoccupied and it was at the far front. The teacher comes in about two minutes after everyone had settled in. He greeted us with the usual good morning but before he took our attendance, he made an announcement. We were having a new student join our class.
A new student, huh? What happened at the old school to enroll here for senior year? Anyway, he invites the new kid in and in they came. The new kid looked to be a wolf similar to me but very different in a lot of aspects. First of all, he looked like he was about 5'9" tall and he was somewhat skinny.
He had black hair with black and white fur all over his body. Though, what got me was his eyes. He has heterochromia. In his left, he had an iridescent orange while in his right, it was a dazzling sky blue. It looked really beautiful actually. Though, some furs couldn't appreciate that at all since I overheard some nasty comments.
"Hey, look at his eyes. He's a two eyed freak", one said. "Ha, yeah. Bet that's why he had to move. No one wanted to even be near him. Like we want to be friends with him", another said. "Ew, look at those eyes. What's wrong with them?", an obnoxious popular girl said. "He better get those fixed", her friend chimed in.
"Okay, everybody! Settle down! Just because his eyes are different doesn't mean you can make fun of him. Now, I want you all to be nice to him or you'll be getting detention for the rest of the school year", the teacher said sternly. "Now, tell us about yourself", the teacher said to the new kid but this time, in a softer tone.
"Oh, um. My name is J-Jasper Reddem... I moved here from Illinois...", he said in a soft voice. Then, silence. It went for a bit before the teacher thanked him for introducing himself. He sat down in the only chair available in the whole class. After that was over, the teacher decided to take our attendance.
When he came to my name, I said "here" in a lazy voice. He ticks it without any questions nor retorts. I sat there for a bit, maybe twenty minutes, before I realised something. Jasper Reddem. JR. Wait, this is his sketchbook. But, I can't exactly stand up for no exact reason and I don't want to scare the guy.
Plus, I know what these guys would do if I went up to him. They'd gang up on him, thinking I wanted to beat him up. I don't condone bullying and I would literally kill them if I could. I'd just have to wait when there's a time when we're alone or something. Anyway, I decided to wait the time out.

The Last Science [SE]
[SE has the same content as the original story, split into smaller chunks for easier reading. This story is on a temporary hiatus due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. I work in healthcare and unfortunately no longer have the freetime to continue posting on a regular basis. As soon as our workload decreases, I will return. Thanks for reading! 💙] No one ever knows the whole story. Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, the fading town of Rallsburg stumbles upon an amazing discovery—magic itself. Faced with potentially world-shattering power, the people of Rallsburg keep the secret for themselves. Led by Rachel DuValle, a perpetually underestimated college student with grand ambitions, they seek to found a new society. The world beyond suspects nothing, but magic cannot stay hidden forever. A train arrives in Rallsburg carrying Alden Bensen, a directionless high school graduate. To him, magic could represent meaning for his life, an explanation for his empty existence. This potent force offers anyone the power to change humanity forever—or send it cascading into swift and total annihilation. The Last Science is an ongoing science-fiction / low-fantasy web novel series, focused on the modern world with a twist. New societies bud and grow, but the people who make them up are imperfect and flawed. The story includes elements of mystery, action, crime, interpersonal drama, relationships, philosophy, sociology, politics, and much more, all centered on the perspective characters driving the tale. This is the "Scraps Edition" of the story, where the chapters have been split up into bite-size chunks (roughly 1500-3000 words), for your convenience. The prose has been edited from its original form, with some improvements, but there are no content differences from the original. New chapters will be posted throughout each week starting on Friday and appearing on multiple days thereafter, depending on the length of the chapter. Content Warning (by request): This series delves into some topics and situations which may be upsetting for some readers. In American rating parlance, the narrative would be rated PG-13 (except for language), but some have noted the story can get pretty dark on occasion. Please use your best judgment, and don't be afraid to take breaks and come back later. I'll still be here! [Discord] - come hang out and chat!
