《Mindful Beauty》42) Their Finale

Ella couldn't stop the shaking of her fingertips as she pried open the envelope that contained the results of her blood work from last week.
Upon arriving home, Damien and Ella booked an urgent appointment with her primary doctor, who had then proceeded to do some blood work on the Spanish girl for any irregularities that seemed indecipherable on the exterior.
"Damien!" Ella quickly called, "Damien!"
"What is it?" Damien frowned, seeing Ella's teary eyes as she handed him a paper. "What is it, amore?" He frowned deeper, suddenly scared of her results. She was crying, and that wasn't a good sign.
"Read it," Ella sniffed, moving closer to him as his eyes frantically scanned the paper.
"Is this real?" Damien felt his throat tighten, his mind reeling and heart pounding. Ella only nodded, unable to speak. "I... you're having our baby?" Damien's smile was slowly but surely forming.
"I know." Ella sniffed, feeling Damien pull her in, planting a slow and deep kiss to her lips.
"You're sure this is real?" Damien chuckled, looking over the form again, but everything showed legitimacy. "You're amazing, you know that?" Damien hugged her gently, his hand going to massage the back of her neck.
"It explains the tiredness, the nausea..."
"What about your period? How come you still were having that?" Damien pulled back, guiding Ella to the breakfast stool so that she could sit.
"It happens sometimes. Crazy, I know." Ella agreed with his amazed face, her own smiling aching her cheeks.
"So you're just going to be a tired Ella for a while, huh?" Damien sighed in relief placing his large hands to cradle her face gently. "I'm so excited." Damien chuckled, his lips curving up genuinely to reveal his dimple.
"Things are going to change," Ella nodded, looking back at the paper on the counter. Damien agreed, ecstatic over the news, and he stayed statistic every single day. Even when Ella wanted to keep her pregnancy on the down-low, at least until they passed the first trimester to ensure the health of the baby before spreading news of the incoming family member.
Of course, once both sides of the family found out, they both threw Ella a baby shower, over the moon that the couple was finally bringing another little one into the family mix. Other than that, Damien tried to ensure that everyone gave Ella plenty of space and peace; he didn't want anything or anyone to even so much as give her something to frown about.
Once Selena found out... well, that was a private conversation between Damien and Selena. It was then that Selena decided she could no longer push away Damien and his newfound life. He looked genuinely happy. Like, the happiest and most content Selena had ever, ever, seen him, really. So she decided to leave.
She promised she would come back one day, but for now, she needed to heal. Perhaps, just like Damien, she had never really gotten over Vincent's abrupt death. Vincent had been their glue, their joy for such a long time that it seemed as though Damien and Selena forgot how to be truly happy and true to themselves without him there. Lucky for Damien, though, he had found Ella.

Selena needed to go away and reflect on life. So she did. She softly congratulated Damien and left, crying in her car on her way home for a lost love, one that she was realizing was never hers to begin with.
Damien returned home, slightly worried, but he had a feeling that Selena was about to turn her life around, and upon confiding in his wife about the events, Ella assured him that Selena would be alright, that they would always be there to help her.
The days after telling everyone, even Selena and Stefanie, we're pretty peaceful. Well, for Ella, mainly seeing as how it seemed Damien was going through it for her.
"Do you want something to eat? Aren't you craving something sweet? Like ice cream?" Damien suddenly questioned his wife that was cuddled up to him on the sofa situated in the living room.
"Hmm?" Ella hummed quietly, sleepily. She had been sleeping a lot more lately, which hadn't posed much of a problem for either her or Damien. She loved napping and Damien adored seeing her resting.
"Do we have ice cream? We should. You're pregnant." His deep voice rumbled, slowly sitting up, gently moving Ella off of his chest. "Sorry, my love." He kissed her forehead before moving to the kitchen.
Ella turned to her other side, cuddling into some throw pillows, returning her attention back to the TV. Damien returned shortly after, a cup of chocolate ice cream in hand and a bag of chips in his other hand. Ella gazed at him with amusement before a small laugh escaped her lips. She couldn't help it. This pregnancy had affected him more than it had affected her. She had heard of the phenomenon where the man felt sympathy pregnancy, feeling the symptoms of the pregnancy, and Damien was definitely a part of that percentage.
"Do you want some?" Damien sat back down, lifting Ella's feet so that they rested over his lap.
"No, thank you." Ella chuckled, readjusting her position. Now, with her stomach a good six months along the way, it was pretty small, but their little girl was getting there. However small she was, though, she still packed a lot of power into the kicks she would occasionally give during some of her tantrums already.
After Damien finished, he stayed still, watching the TV quietly before breaking that silence, snapping Ella's focus from the show once again. "Why are you all the way over there?" He frowned.
Ella chuckled, not even bothering to look at him thinking he was just kidding since just minutes ago, he had gotten up himself.
"Love," Damien called again, his brows pulled together in confusion.
"Yes?" Ella looked up, seeing his small pout that looked almost unreal on him.
"Why are you all the way over there?" He moved over to her, pressing himself beside her, moving her completely from her position to cuddle her once again. "That's better." He placed his large hand under her stomach. He didn't know why, but being able to hold Ella and feel the gentle weight of her bump in his hand just released any tension he could have had from his day. He saw his beginning and end there with his family.

Ella laughed, sleepily humming in agreement before dozing off not even five minutes later.
Months later, in the emergency room, Damien was nervously pacing the lobby while his distressed wife was all alone in the room, practically fighting for her life as well as their little girl's.
Just as Fransisco was about to get up to reassure his brother in in law, the doctor in charge of delivering babies stepped out. Damien didn't even wait for the doctor to invite him in when Damien rushed inside, quickly placing himself beside his wife.
"Oh, my love." Damien quickly took her hand, looking at her body hurriedly. "How is she doing?" He looked at the doctor, his other hand reaching to brush back a few of Ella's hair strands that had loosened from her two French braids.
"She's ready to start. You good there, Mrs. Petrotti?" The doctor chuckled at seeing Ella's surprisingly calm exterior.
On the outside, Ella was trying to keep it together for her husband, but on the inside, Ella was pleading that this be her last pregnancy ever.
"Come on, amore. You can do this, okay? Just a few pushes." Damien felt pathetically useless by her side, his gut churning in nervousness and excitement at the same time. The only help he could give was a hand for her to hold and telling her sweet nothings while she literally pushed out another human being into the world.
"Is she okay?" Ella quietly whispered, exhausted beyond belief. She couldn't even lift her hand to hold Damien's anymore.
"You're astounding, Ella. Absolutely perfect." Damien whispered, kissing her forehead.
Soon after, Ella fell into a deep, deep sleep that had worried the doctors and Damien, but they soon found out she was just resting. A few days later, they were back home.
It was nighttime, and their daughter, Sofia, was sleeping peacefully in the crib at the end of their bed.
Ella was lying over Damien's chest, staring at the crib with pure love and admiration of their new family member. Damien couldn't help but bring Ella's body closer to his, using his fingers to lift her chin up to him so he could kiss her.
"You scared me that day." He explained quietly, his voice low and tender just like his soft touches as he traced his fingertips over her back and arms. "I thought you had fallen into some sort of coma."
Ella chuckled, pressing her lips to his again. "It's a tough job, you know."
Damien stared into those hazel eyes he had fallen for so deeply from the start. "I know," his thumb caressed her soft chin and jaw line. "I thought you couldn't become more of a hero, an angel, but you surprised me. You're truly magnificent, my love." He kissed her forehead, right between her brows, squeezing her tightly against him.
"Thank you," Ella smiled gently, sighing in content. She really couldn't have asked for a more doting and devoting husband.
Damien had proved himself during even the hardest days of her pregnancy when she couldn't sleep during the night and he would stay up with her despite having an early morning meeting the next day. Even after the pregnancy, now, he would be the one to regularly wake up to feed Sofia, to check up on her or change her diapers, not complaining even once.
Every single day he would get home from work, greet Ella, and ask, "Sof?"
Ella would laugh, still smothered by his pecking kisses, then tell him where she was, and he would leave immediately after.
At night, Damien was sure that he couldn't end his day without carrying his entire life. During the evening, despite Ella telling him that he was going to accustom Sofia to people carrying her and not her bed, Damien still held Sofia for everything. It was a drastic change considering how afraid he thought was going to be to hold such a delicate and important human being, but now he just couldn't stop admiring his little girl. Once nighttime came and it was time for bed, he would quickly scoop up Ella in his arms.
"Damien!" Ella laughed quietly, "it's like you need to be holding something," she whispered as he tucked them into bed.
"I don't even get to see you guys all day long. We barely even get to spend time for a few hours a day." Damien hummed from behind Ella, his nose buried in her fragrant hair as he took ahold of her hand, lacing their fingers together in her front since her back was pressed to his chest.
"How is everything at the office? It's your biggest case since... well, since we met, really."
Damien kissed her neck at the memory of how he met her. He hadn't even wanted her help, thinking she was some newbie and didn't yet know what actual criminal behavior even was. Now he was glad that he had been in such a desperate situation to ask her for help.
"You know that we'll have to give Sofia her own room one day, right?" Ella turned in his arms, Damien turning from his side and onto his back instead so that Ella could settle over his chest.
"I know, but... that won't be until a long time from now." Damien reached to caress Ella's arm with his hand, "right?"
Ella laughed softly, thinking it over. "It'll be a while, don't worry."
"She'll be my little girl for a while longer... a lot longer." Damien sighed, already fearful of how fast their little baby was growing. It felt like just yesterday was the day she brought even more joy to his life.
His heart felt swollen with love, but he wouldn't have it any other way.
