《Mindful Beauty》3) His Hostility

Damien was walking to his office early morning on Monday. The cool weather had him in a decent mood this morning, he even had given the janitor a greeting, something out of the normal for Damien.
"I feel horrible for her..."
"I hope she wins this case..."
"She just began her practice up again..."
Damien heard the women in the office, with the exception of Oliver who was also in the huddle, gossiping while staring in the direction of Kim's office. Damien shook his head in disapproval.
He hated people butting in into his business, therefore he hated nosey people. He completely ignored the group and went straight to his office where he knew he could work in peace thanks to the blinds that he had installed to maintain some sort of barrier of privacy between the transparent, glass walls and him.
"Damien!" Oliver's hand appeared from nowhere, and Damien, taken aback by the bold action, didn't have time to shake the other attorney off. "Look, that's Kim's granddaughter!" Oliver pointed blatantly at the glass office where was Kim was, indeed, meeting with a younger and petite woman.
Damien looked at Oliver's hand in warning and boredom, and Oliver quickly removed his hand, almost flinching from how annoyed Damien looked.
"Sorry, sir." Oliver automatically apologized, then mentally reprimanded himself for acting like a scolded kid when he had done nothing wrong. "I heard you were taking Ms. Ella's case."
"You heard wrong." Damien grunted, his mood was dampening now that he was having to interact with his gossiping colleagues.
"Are you sure? Because Kim said-"
"I just told you, you heard wrong." Damien moved away from Olivier, retreating back to his office where he settled down. Just as he got to work, his office door swung open.
"Damien! How are you doing, son? Good? Great, me too. Look," Mr. Kim brightly gestured to a young woman who stood beside him, her cheeks flushed. Damien looked at them through unamused eyes. "Meet Ella. She's the new case that you will be taking." Kim moved forward, pulling Ella by the wrist until she was right in front of Damien.

"Mr. Kim," Damien sucked in a harsh breath, ignoring the perfume that itched his nose for a sneeze.
"Yes, I know- you're very excited about the case. Take care of it well, thanks!" Mr. Kim rushed out, leaving Ella confused at the sudden turn of events.
"Um... hi, I'm Ella Cortesa." Ella extended her hand forward, hoping to somehow reduce a bit of the awkwardness that Kim had left behind.
"One moment." Damien ignored her hand and abruptly left, leaving her to feel even more awkward and tense.
"Okay, then." Ella dropped her hand, chuckling softly at how silly she must seem. Instinctively, she looked around, catching sight of the other attorneys that Kim Jihye presented her to only moments earlier. She watched as they scrambled to become busy, not expecting her to catch them in the act of spying. She turned around, pretending to not have noticed them crashing into each other or making a huge ruckus about meetings and pending faxes and copies. Biting her lower lip to prevent herself from smiling and laughing, she opted to look around the office.
There were plenty of papers scattered along, yet each one seemed like it had been methodically placed. There were only two pens with the accompaniment of a neon yellow highlighter. Coincidently, the rest of the room only consisted of very neutral colors like black, white, and a few greys. A series and firm man, Ella though. She didn't get to admire the office more before the office door opened again, and she turned around.
"I apologize for the sudden turn of events, but it seems as though your grandfather has made a mistake and is currently sulking in his office." Damien rounded his desk, picking up a file and ignoring Ella's confused look. Her black brows were pulled together, her hazel eyes curiously looking over the file that Damien had just handed to her. "I will not be the attorney in charge of this case, Miss Cortesa."
"Oh," Ella pouted her lips a tiny bit, realizing why Damien had been a bit hostile. It seemed that he didn't want this case just as much as her. "I see." She fixed a kind and polite smile, looking at Damien straight in the eyes. "Thank you anyway, and I, too, apologize for the mixup."

"Right." Damien nodded, directed her towards the door.
"Have a good day, Mr. Petrotti." Ella left, and Damien wasted not a minute more before closing his office door and returning to his work. Ella felt a little taken aback by his hostile personality, but nonetheless, she shrugged it off and left to find Jihye.
"Ella," Mr. Kim greeted her bashfully as she entered his office. "I'm really sorry about that."
"It's alright. It's not like I was really expecting someone to gleefully take on this case." Ella couldn't help but feel defeated. Sure, she had high hopes that everything would be resolved, whether it turned it out good or bad was another factor entirely, but the case would be resolved eventually.
"Actually, that's exactly what we were talking about!" Oliver perked up, smiling reassuringly as he moved to sit on the sofa across Ella. "I will be taking your case."
"You are?" Ella and Kim simultaneously questioned, and Ella looked at Kim in mild concern upon hearing his uncertainty. While she was grateful that Kim was resolving this for her free of charge, she also didn't necessarily want someone to do a really bad jab and end up making her look worse in front of the public eye. While she didn't sincerely what people thought of her, she didn't want those rumors and fake news about her to ruin her practice of helping people; she loved her job.
"Of course, I am! Isn't that right, Mr. Kim?" Oliver turned to look at his boss with a hopeful expression, his blue eyes almost gleaming.
"Um... that is still to be discussed-"
"Nonsense! There's no one better for the job."
"No one but maybe the janitor." Kim grumbled, disappointed by how everything was turning out.
"I'll pretend I heard nothing." Oliver dismissed everything. "Think about it, I'll do a great job with Ella."
"Ella's case, Oliver." Mr. Kim walked to his seat, using a magazine he had lying around to smack the back of Oliver's head. "Oops." Ella fought the giggle, instead looking at Jihye. "What do you, Ellie?"
Ella looked back warily at Oliver. He couldn't be a bad lawyer if he was hired by Jihye, right? "You really wouldn't mind? I don't want to hinder your schedule."
"Of course not. I'll happily defend you, Ellie-"
The magazine Kim had in his hand smacked Oliver loudly on his face.
"Geez, the magazines these days are getting more complicated to read." Mr. Kim grumbled, and Ella raised a hand to cover her mouth as Oliver closed his eyes and breathed out heavily in annoyance.
"Thank you, Jihye and Mr..."
"Oliver or Ollie-"
"Pruette," Mr. Kim stood up, grabbing a throw pillow, and Oliver visibly flinched.
"Mr. Pruette." Ella concluded, standing up to follow Jihye out of his office to the front lobby where the two front desk secretaries were chatting over coffee.
"Miss Cortesa," one of the younger secretaries noticed her, smiling brightly as she neared them.
"Is this what I pay you for?" Mr. Kim grumbled, noticing their computer monitors were off.
"We do our job, though," the older secretary mumbled, touching her glasses in a self-conscious way. Mr. Kim sighed, waving his hand to dismiss it.
"Ella is leaving now." Their boss announced louder than necessary, acting as a barrier between her and his curious secretaries that were still fawning over the young lady. "Get out of the way, yes. Move... farther, Oliver." Kim grounded out as he managed to get Ella into the elevator despite everyone wanting to say goodbye.
"She is so pretty."
"She is so nice."
"How could anybody sue her?"
Mr. Kim stood there with a proud smile on his face upon hearing all of the compliments from his employees for his adopted granddaughter. He soon clapped his hands in order to draw the attention back to him. "Alright! Enough of this. Let's get back to work, everyone! I don't sign the paychecks just for you guys to sit there and look ugly."
