《Killer Bay》A Killer Among Us

"Adalet, I hope Danny will have the answers we need. We've got to figure out who was really behind the Mennagio heist..." Andrea prayed as she and the captain sat waiting for Frank to arrive, "and we also need to figure out if they're the ones who stole the plutonium from the casino's vault! I don't like the idea of Frank escorting Danny on his own. I'd better radio him..."
The Chief picked up the handheld walkie-talkie off her desk and pressed the button to initiate a conversation. After hearing the deceive click into service, she spoke into the speaker.
"Frank, do you read me? What's your location?" Andrea asked impatiently.
Frank's reply was heard moments later and from the faint sound of an engine rumbling, he was still driving, "I hear you, Andrea. We're driving over the dam, we should be there in 10 minutes. That's if my whiny passenger doesn't need ANOTHER toilet break!"
A quiet "it was one time!" could be heard in the background from the convicted killer.
"What the- WHOA! Hold on, I can'-"
The radio crackled with white noise and the connection from Frank's transmission was lost.
"Frank? FRANK?! What's going on?! Answer me!" Andrea orders, her worry growing. But the other end of the transmission remained silent, "the radio's dead... Adalet, do you think..."
"I... I'm scared to check," Adalet confessed, "I can look but-"
"No," she refuses, putting the radio away, "this needs to be done in person. Frank said they were crossing the dam! Take Amy with you and get there as fast as you can!"
Grabbing Amy from her desk on the way by, Adalet briefed her partner about what had happened as they rushed to the parking garage. Driving as fast as they could to the Paradise City dam, Adalet and Amy almost skidded to a stop at the entrance. They ran across the overpass where they could see a cop car had swerved sideways just before the toll booth.
"Frank?! Frank, where are you?!" Adalet yelled, looking around for her partner.
"Adalet, can you see him?! Oh God, I hope he's alright!" Amy prayed.
"Ugh, could you stop shouting, kiddo? My head feels like a truck drove over it..."
The women turned to face the pained groan and found Frank stumbling towards them from the other side of the cop car. He looked relatively alright, but there was a nasty-looking cut above his left temple that had already begun bruising.
"Frank, you're alive!! Oh, I'm so happy!" Amy cheered, hugging the detective as tightly as she dared.
"But Danny... Danny's dead!" Adalet exclaimed, as Hunter sniffed the corpse sitting on the ground slumped against the squad car, "Frank, what happened out here?! Who killed Danny?"
Frank pulls away from the hug, "all I can remember is the car tires blowing out, and then someone knocked me out!"
She sighs, "I'm sorry but we're going to have to interrogate you. You're our only witness. And we'd better get Danny's body to Roxie and see what she can tell us, we'll also get her to check you over, Frank, make sure you don't have a concussion or anything."
He snorted, "yeah, if she didn't then Yann will, and he won't be gentle!"
"That's because you never listen to him," Adalet teased as Hunter dragged a spike strip over from where the car had run it over a few yards back, "nice job, Hunter! You also found a spike strip on the road... This must have been used by the killer to blow out the car's tires!"

"There's some kind of substance on it..." Amy noticed, seeing the orangish stain on one end, "let's collect a sample, Adalet!"
"Whoever killed Danny must have been pretty desperate to attack a police car," Adalet comments as she grabs a swabbing kit, "one thing's sure, we're up against a killer with something to hide, and nothing to lose!"
While Adalet swabbed off a sample of the substance on the spike strip, Amy guided Frank to sit down against the guard rail while they waited for Roxie to arrive. Adalet finished collecting her sample just as they saw the coroner's van driving onto the dam.
"Nice work collecting that sample from the spike stripe, Adalet. Let's get it to Yann!" Amy says as Roxie slowed to a stop beside the crashed police car.
"Frank!" Roxie yells as she jumps out of her van, "are you alright!? Are you seeing straight?! How many fingers am I holding up!?"
Frank groans as he swats her hand away, "too many! And you're too loud!"
"Sorry!" she apologized in a quieter voice, "let me grab my kit and I'll check you over!"
While Roxie returned to her van, Adalet joined her partners to ask Frank more about the attack and car crash.
"Frank," Adalet says, kneeling in front of her partner, "I need to know everything you remember about the attack!"
"I don't know what happened. One minute I was driving Danny over the dam, the next the tires exploded!" Frank explains, waving his hand at the damaged vehicle, "when I got out the car, no one was there. Then... I got hit on the head and blacked out!"
"Did Danny have time to tell you who the sixth man, the person who kept Louis informed of our progress, is?" she questioned, "is it someone from the police station?"
"He didn't say. But he told me something else. He mentioned the heist team dumping some of their equipment at the Paradise City Junkyard!" he recalled, "if the killer is tied to the heist, maybe you'll find a clue there. Not bad for an injured detective, eh, Adalet?"
She smiled, "not bad indeed. Come on, Amy, let's go check out this junkyard!"
Leaving Frank, Danny's body, and the sample for Yann in Roxie's capable hands, Adalet and Amy headed out to the junkyard the heist team had been using. Hopefully, there would be something there to help with this murder investigation. Arriving at the odd-looking junkyard (seriously, what did people in Paradise City throw away?). They began looking for clues. They found a dirty, blue briefcase hidden amongst the large metal attractions and a wooden puzzle cube not far from the entrance to the junkyard.
"Look at this junkyard, Adalet! It looks like a place where old casinos come to die..." Amy remarked as she admired the large decorations and signs, "and where heist teams dump their stuff, apparently!"
"Oh, they definitely did!" Adalet responds, showing Amy the name engraved on the briefcase.
"Nice find! The briefcase has our victim's name on it! Think you can get it open? I bet you can!" she answered her own question with a laugh, "what's that weird lump of wood you've got there? Some sort of puzzle?"
"Exactly!" she girns, "just the kind of thing a math genius like Danny might have!"
"That's right! Let's dust it for fingerprints!"
Adalet passed Amy the dusting kit while she picked up Danny's briefcase. She turned the dials on the lock around as Amy was dusting the cube, and after a few minutes, both had finished with their tasks.

"What's on that piece of paper you found in Danny's briefcase, Adalet?" Amy inquired, seeing the page the Captain had pulled out.
Adalet frowned her brows, "it looks like some super complicated design for a machine... Most of the annotations are faded..."
Amy passed her the dusting kit she had just finished using, "but I know you'll uncover them in a flash, Adalet!"
"Thanks, Amy!" she beamed, accepting the items, "great job! You managed to get some fingerprints off that puzzle game you found at the junkyard! Let's cross-reference them in the database!"
Adalet passed Amy her tablet before finishing up dusting the top of the blueprint. The title SECURE PLUTONIUM CONTAINER was printed in big bold letters about the diagram.
"The drawing in Danny's briefcase is for a machine that requires plutonium!" Adalet reported.
"D'you think this could have something to do with the plutonium that was stolen from the Mennagio's fault, Adalet?" Amy suggested, selecting the final match for the fingerprints in the database.
"Even if it's not, this is too much of a coincidence! This drawing and the heist must be related!" she decided, "let's get this to Hannah and see if she can tell us anything more about this design!"
"What?!" Amy cried, staring at the results on the tablet, "this can't be happening! The fingerprints on that puzzle game belonged to Russell?!"
Adalet's eyes widened, "there Russell's fingerprints?!"
"This must be a mistake! There must be some logical explanation for Russell's fingerprints to be on Danny's puzzle... An explanation that ISN'T him being the sixth man!" she insisted.
"I'm sure there is..." she agreed, "and hopefully he can tell us!"
She sighed, "I guess we don't have a choice. We'll have to interrogate Russell. I'm sure he'll set us straight!"
Driving back to the station with their new evidence, neither Adalet nor Amy could even think about what they might learn when they ask Russell about his fingerprints on the puzzle. They dropped the blueprint off in Hannah's lab for her to analyze while walking down the hall to the profiler's office. They found Russell reviewing a file at his large table, books and papers skewed over the surface of it.
"Um, Russell, we found this puzzle..." Amy fidgeted with the wooden cube, "we think it belonged to your victim... What are your fingerprints doing on it?"
Russell looked up, chewing on the arm of his glasses, "oh, you found that... Well, I have nothing to hide. It was a gift from Danny!"
"A gift? You knew the victim?!" Adalet demanded.
"We weren't friends or anything. I bumped into Danny when you first investigated him, Adalet. He was the cleverest person I'd ever met, and that's saying something!" he explains, putting his glasses down, "we talked, and before he left the station, he gave me that puzzle as a challenge. I solved it in two minutes and forgot about it!"
"And it somehow ended up next to Danny's briefcase in a junkyard on the other side of the city... Russell, are you sure you're telling us everything?" Amy asked.
"Amy, there's no need to fret. I had nothing to do with Danny's death, Adalet," Russell assured the women, "but I'll enjoy seeing you crack the case!"
"Whoa, Adalet, this murder is shocking! I mean, I was electrified!" Roxie cackled as she, Yann, and Hannah entered the office.
"Are you saying Danny was electrocuted? But with what?" Amy inquired.
"Well, from the burn marks on his chest, it was obvious he was zapped with a stun gun!" she answered, showing them a picture of the burn marks.
"A stun gun? But aren't they designed NOT to kill people?" Adalet countered.
"That's what's so awesome! The killer must have modified the stun gun so that the voltage will be high enough to kill!" Roxie speculated, "of course, you'll have to find the actual murder weapon to see how they did it, but one thing's certain: your killer knows electronics!"
"Ha! This killer might know their way around a circuit board, but no one is better at an old-fashioned murder investigation than Adalet!" Amy boasted.
"What about that substance, Yann?" Adalet asked.
"The substance you brought me was so potent I had to crack a window open, Adalet!" Yann jokes, "turns out this substance is whiskey, the strong and expensive kind. Where did you find this stuff?"
"It came from the strip the killer used to stop Frank's car," she answers.
"Well, that can only mean one thing! You're looking for a killer who drinks whiskey!" he replied confidently.
"Haha! Either that or Frank's actually the killer! We know how much he loves whiskey!" Amy laughs, earning worried stares from her teammates, "sorry, guys, that wasn't funny... Anyway, the killer won't drink whiskey for much longer, not with us on their trail!"
"Here's hoping history doesn't repeat itself..." Adalet muttered, turning to the team's tech expert, "were you able to make any sense of that drawing, Hannah?"
Hannah looked extremely frazzled, "Adalet, I... I don't understand. Where did you find this drawing?!"
"We found it in our victim's briefcase," Adalet frowns, "why? Do you know what the machine is for?"
"Well... yeah. It's a project I've been working on..." she confessed, not meeting her teammates' eyes.
"What?!" Amy exclaimed, "you're saying this drawing is yours?"
"Yes, but I don't understand why it was in Danny's briefcase! It should be locked in my desk drawer! Nobody knew about it!" Hannah insisted.
"I..." Adalet took a deep breath to collect her thoughts, "look, Hannah, this is too big to ignore. We'll need to officially interrogate you."
Roxie and Yann silently leave the office to give them some privacy while the two cops ask Hannah about her secret project.
"Hannah, can you explain why you're planning to build a machine that requires plutonium? And why we found the design in our victim's briefcase?" Adalet inquired.
"Look, I have no idea how it ended up in there! Danny... Danny must have stolen it when he was at the station for interrogation!" Hannah guessed, still confused by the turn of events.
"But what about the plutonium? Were you the one who stole it from the casino vault?" she asked, crossing her arms.
"Of course not! Adalet, I would never do that! Getting plutonium legally is near-impossible, but I wouldn't resort to stealing it!" she promised, "I've been working on that machine for months. It's a new type of database, so powerful that, with the right source of power, it can answer any question you ask!"
"Okay, Hannah. I hope we don't find anything else connecting you to Danny's death or the plutonium theft... I don't want to arrest a member of our team!" Amy says sadly.
"And I don't want to do it again..." Adalet mumbled under her breath.
"Adalet, I don't know what to think!" the blonde complained as Hannah left the office, "Hannah needed the plutonium for her machine... Could she have organized the heist to get it?!"
"I really can't see Hannah organizing a heist... Well, actually I could but just for fun," she admitted, "but I've had people surprise me before... But no matter what, we can't let Danny's accusations drive us apart."
"You're right!" she agrees, "it'll take more than this to make me doubt our team!
"What a morning! A few hours ago, Danny was on his way to tell us the heist's sixth man was. And now we're investigating his murder!" Amy held her head in her hand, "and the clues we've found point to our teammates! Frank was the one driving Danny to the station, but the killer knocked him out cold... Hannah can't possibly be involved! So she needed plutonium for her new database, and plutonium was stolen from the vault... but that's just a coincidence! And then there's poor Russell, getting himself mixed up in this. So he accepted a gift from the victim. What's wrong with that?!"
"I have a feeling we won't like how this case ends no matter the outcome..." Adalet complained, "and right now, this makes me worry that Danny was telling the truth when he implied someone in the police station was feeding information to Louis De Rico..."
"No. That's nonsense. No one in this police department could have been involved!" she refused to believe the dead man's accusations.
"Adalet, I just got a report that there's a spike strip missing from our armoury. Didn't you find one at your crime scene?!" Andrea demanded, holding a PBPD inventory report in her hand.
Adalet blinked, "yes, but... The spike strip we found was used by the killer to stop the car, it can't be the same one! Unless..."
"Unless our killer has access to the armoury," the Chief finished, "which means the killer is someone from our team! I think it's time we face the facts: whoever killed Danny was connected to this department! We can't trust anyone!"
"Chief, I know the spike strip the killer used to stop Frank's car came from our armoury, but still... I can't believe our team could betray us like that!" Amy argues.
"We cannot take any chances! Even more so since Danny implied the sixth heist member was part of the police! Chances are, they killed Danny to protect their secret!" Andrea reasoned.
"Oh Adalet, I don't think I can handle this pressure! We need to find a way to prove our team had nothing to do with this!" she declared.
"Well, start by going to the armoury," Andrea ordered, "we know the killer went there to get the spike strip. And leave no stone unturned!"
It was the first time since Jazz Town that they didn't need to leave the station to search a crime scene. Entering the police armoury, Adalet recalled her and Frank being in there just yesterday to get their SWAT gear to take down the heist crew. Now, she and Amy needed to search it for evidence of Danny's killer and how they managed to steal a spike strip.
Walking past the racks of sniper rifles and other long-range weapons, Adalet noticed some broken shard of metal on one of the side tables. While she was picking up the pieces, Hunter barked at one of the weapons lockers lined up along the far wall. Upon closer inspection, they could see there were dents on the front of the locker as if someone had tried to force it open.
"It's pretty weird to be searching our own armoury!" Amy remarked, coming around from behind the racks of guns she had searched through, "did you find any traces of the killer's visit, Adalet?"
"There's some broken pieces of metal that don't look like any part of a weapon," Adalet answered, placing her case on the table beside the pieces.
"I agree, those broken pieces look out of place. Let's put them back together!" she says, looking over to see what had caught Hunter's interest, "but why are you interested in that weapons locker, Hunter? The armoury is full of weapons!"
"I don't think it's the weapons she's interested in," the captain argued, "I think it's those dents she noticed!"
"Oh right, the locker's damaged. Well, I bet you know the code by heart, so I'll let you unlock it!" she said, stepping to the side.
"Why thank you."
Just like Amy thought, Adalet did know the locker code. She punched in the code UEB8QH and the locker clicked open.
"You got the weapons locker open! Anything inside?" Amy asked, curiously.
"I've got a rifle, a baton..." Adalet looked down the racks holding the listed weapons, "hold it, the stun gun is missing!"
"And we know the killer used a stun gun to kill Danny!" she mused, "and since they stole the spike strip from here... They might have taken this gun, too! What's that at the bottom of the locker? A gold coin?!"
The Turk picked up the small disk, "I've never seen this before, so the killer must have dropped it!"
"Haha! The killer left a gold coin behind! Their first mistake! Let's get this to..." Amy trailed off as she realized one important fact regarding the case, "wait, half the team are suspects. Who do we get this to?!"
"Here's to hoping Yann's only suspect appearance was back in Jazz Town," Adalet huffed a humourless laugh.
"Okay, maybe Yann can find something on this coin! I just hope we can trust him!" she prayed.
Walking back over to the table holding her case and the broken metal, Adalet found her bottle of glue. She glued together each of the pieces, careful not to cut herself on the sharp edges. When the last piece had been attached, she found herself holding a small, skull-shaped pendant that was eerily familiar.
