《Killer Bay》No Honor Among Thieves

"Adalet, thanks to your work we finally have proof the heist team is going to target the Mennagio casino!" Andrea smiles proudly, "you'll team up with Frank and intercept the heist team before they break into the vault! Catch them red-handed!"
"We're on it!" Frank salutes, "c'mon, Adalet, let's get into tactical gear! We've got master criminals to arrest!"
"Bulletproof vests here we come!" Adalet grinned.
"I'm afraid it's already too late!" Hannah yells, running over while turning her tablet for them to see the screen, "there's been an explosion at the Mennagio! The casino's vault has been broken into!"
"WHAT?! They've broken into the vault?!" Frank shouts, seeing the breaking news clip Hannah's tablet displayed, "dammit, they must have heard we were onto them and rushed their plans!"
"You can still catch them before they run away! Go to the vault, NOW!" Andrea orders.
Frank and Adalet saluted before running out of the office. They stopped by the station's armoury to grab some tactical gear and put on their bulletproof vests and SWAT hats while running to their car. Speeding over to the casino with lights and sirens ablaze they ran inside and down to the casino's vault room with their guns drawn.
"Now we've got them! Nobody move!" Frank yells as they burst into the room behind the exploded vault door.
But there was not a person insight to greet them. Well, that's inaccurate, there was no living person insight to greet them. Dead, however; slumping against a large stack of money was Louis De Rico with an ashen complexion and blood running from his nose and mouth. Clenched in the dead man's hand was a gas mask but by the limp hold he had on it, he was beyond saving.
Frank looked around in confusion, "... Wait, this place is empty. Adalet, where is the heist crew? What's going on?"
Adalet walked around the stack of money to get a closer look at the body, "there IS someone here."
"Oh, except he's dead as a doornail," he quipped as he joined her in staring at the body, "it's Louis De Rico! Louis's dead! Why is Louis holding a gas mask? And where are the others? Did they leave him to die?"
"Too many questions and not enough answers yet, Frank," she replies, noticing a rolled-up blueprint on top of the stack of cash Louis was lying against and a note on the ground just a few inches from the dead man.
"Quickly, what have you found?" Frank inquired as he saw her picking up the clues, "a map of the sewers? And that big "HQ" in the middle... that must stand for "headquarters"!"
Adalet hums as she unrolls the map, "the swears are too big and would take me forever to look through... But the database can compare it to the full plans in seconds!"
"You think you can run that map through the database and pinpoint which part of the sewers Louis based his headquarters in?" he summarized, "ambitious, but worth a try! And you found some stationery... with a threat to our victim! "Louis, I told you: double-cross me and you're dead!"
"There's some kind of imprint underneath the message..." the captain noticed the smudged mark at the end of the page.
"Get your dusting kit, Adalet!" he replied just as the sound of heels clicking furiously reached their ears.
"That crumb bum! He did it! Louis pulled off the heist!" Eugenia spat appearing in the entranceway, steam almost bellowing out of her ears.

"Ms. Hestentrope! Get back behind the police tape!" Frank ordered, "you're interfering with a crime scene!"
"This is my casino and I will do whatever I want in it!" she fired back.
"Oh no, you won't!" he barked just as loudly, "you're a key player in this investigation and Capt. Adalet will interrogate you!"
"So, Louis De Rico blew right through all your fancy security..." Adalet remarked, eyeing the burn marks on the vault door.
"Like I need to be reminded! I could've sworn we had the jump on that creep, but he pulled the heist anyway!" Eugenia fumed, "I was so sure the casino was safe that I was all the way across Paradise City looking at a new property to develop."
Frank snorted, "nice alibi, sister. It would be interesting to know why you had one prepared..."
She glared, "believe me, Officers, all I cared about was protecting my casino from that heist! I've barely slept in weeks!"
"Well, Ms. Hestentrope, you'd better hope we don't discover your security plan included murder, or you can kiss the high life goodbye!" he assured the woman, flagging a newly arrived beat cop to escort the woman out of the vault.
With Eugenia now away from the crime scene, Adalet took the note and placed it on top of the stack of cash. She dusted the bottom of the page and recovered the impression that had been made on it. But the strange black shape was nothing they could identify.
"So, what were those markings underneath that threat sent to our victim?" Frank asked.
Adalet showed him the page, "I have no idea."
"This doesn't look like anything..." he grumbled, "no time to play riddles, let's get this paper to Hannah! Now, let's see if you can pinpoint the location of those sewers in the database, Adalet! Finding the heist team's headquarters would be a big break!"
With that vote of confidence, Adalet grabbed her tablet and found the database containing maps and blueprints for Paradise City. After pulling up the map of the sewer system, she compared it to the map found inside the vault. After a few minutes of going back and forth between both maps, she found the location on the main map that matched the one for the heist crew's HQ.
"So were you able to match that sewer map from the vault to anything in the database?" Frank asks as Adalet rolls up the map.
"Yup!" Adalet confirmed, showing him the spot she had marked on her tablet.
"You were? Great!" he grins, taking the tablet for a closer look, "I see, that branch of the sewers goes underneath the Mennagio Casino! So Louis' headquarters are close-by! There's not a second to lose! Let's go have a look at those headquarters, Adalet!"
Leaving the vault and casino, Frank guided Adalet towards the nearest sewer drain entrance. The Captain lifted the manhole cover and climbed down the ladder, the Senior Detective following after her while Hunter remained above ground as the lookout. Adalet made a small flame on her hand to illuminate the area and followed the wall for several meters until they stood in front of the reinforced steel door leading to the heist crew's HQ. Surprisingly, it wasn't locked so Frank and Adalet let themselves inside to the large room lined with tables, cabinets, and chairs scattered around it.
Splitting up they searched the room for clues connected to either the heist or the murder. While Frank was checking out the information displayed on the various monitors around the room, Adalet looked around the other half of the room. She found a torn picture on one of the tables and an orange sports bag overflowing with supplies on another table.

"Wow! Louis really had the heist headquarters decked out! Look at all this equipment!" Frank says, noticing Adalet placing the items down on one of the empty tables, "a sports bag? Well, you're bound to find something good in it! Looks like there's a torn photo, too! I know how much you love restoring those, and it's bound to give us more information about the heist crew!"
Adalet dumped out the contents of the sports bag first. Clown masks, gloves, smoke bombs, and handguns tumbled out of the bag and one of the last things to fall out was a red bra with a lace black overlay and a tag attached to one of the straps.
"Yowza! Look at that bra!" Frank whistled.
Adalet raised an eyebrow, "yeah... No, happily married over here, Frank."
He blushed, "kinda hot in a trashy way... I mean, if that's what you're into... which I'm not... Hey, look! There's a tag attached!"
She snickered, "smooth... We'll need to retrieve the message, it's faded..."
"If you need help handling that bra, don't hesitate to ask, Adalet!" he volunteered.
"I have years of experience with these, Frank," she smirked as his blush deepened, "but thanks for the offer!"
While Frank tried to make his blush go away, Adalet dusted the tag attached to the bra. For a small tag, the writer managed to get a fair amount of words on it.
"Jez, wear this to distract the guards!" And it's signed by Louis!" Adalet read what it said on the tag.
"Jez... What is that for a name?" Frank wondered.
"It could be short for Jezebel!" she suggested.
"Oh yeah, you're right! Jezebel Lopez was a suspect in the murder of Stacy Lovely!" he recalled, "and if she needed to distract guards... it means she was part of the heist crew! Adalet, let's go talk to Jezebel about this lovely lingerie from Louis... and her involvement in the heist!"
Adalet rolled her eyes as she picked up the torn photo. She arranged the pieces into their correct order first and then taped everything together so that the photo could be seen.
"So does the photo you put back together tell us anything new? I recognize the victim, but who's the kid? He looks familiar..." Frank pondered, cupping his jaw in thought.
"That's Danny Moto! He was a suspect in the murder of that croupier!" Adalet reminded her partner.
"He and Louis look real friendly! How did a boy genius like Danny get involved with a hardened criminal?" he wondered.
"Louis can't tell us," she replies, "so we'd better ask Danny about his relationship with the victim and his involvement in the heist!"
Leaving the sewers to rejoin Hunter on the surface, Adalet and Frank headed over to the strip club Jezebel Lopez works at to talk to her about her involvement in the heist. The club was closed when they arrived but after banging on the glass door, the bouncer let them in with no complaint once he saw their badges. He directed them to the back room where the dancers got ready and they found Jezebel sitting at her vanity, scrubbing at an orange paint stain on her right shoulder.
"So, Ms. Lopez... We found some..." Frank coughed as Adalet placed the bra on the vanity, "intimate apparel for you from Louis De Rico. The message attached said something about distracting some guards?"
"In my line of work, lots of people offer me lingerie! So what?" Jezebel asks, lowering the cloth she was scrubbing with.
"Don't play coy. We know you were part of the heist crew. Now Louis is dead, and we want answers! What happened? Did Louis plan to hang you out to dry? You found out and killed him!" he accused.
"No! I mean, yes, I was part of the heist crew... Louis recruited me to get information and distract security... but I didn't kill him!" she cried, sweating nervously, "I just played my part! I distracted the guards and then I got the hell out of there!"
"Well," Adalet pulled out her handcuffs, "I'm placing you under arrest for your part in the heist. We'll follow the evidence and see if we need to charge you for murdering Louis, too!"
After taking Jezebel into custody, Adalet and Frank returned to the station while calling Danny Moto in to ask him about his involvement in the heist. Once the stripper was in the hands of the holding officer, they grabbed Danny from the lobby and brought him to an interrogation room.
"You and Louis look pretty chummy in this photo, Danny!" Frank commented dryly as he tossed the photo down on the table, "I thought you were afraid of him after you reported him to the police for burglary?"
"I WAS afraid... And Louis did come after me! But... Instead of harming me, he told me I could be useful to him!" Danny explains quickly, "he knew about my card counting and told me he could use a brain like mine on his heist crew! I was scared of him, so I said yes! But you know what? I'm... kinda glad I accepted! For the first time in my life, I was part of a team! My talents were finally being appreciated!"
"Quite a change of personality you went through, Danny Boy. And all you've achieved is that you're under arrest for your part in the heist," he informed him, "time will tell if we also book you for killing Louis De Rico!"
"Hello, Adalet. I've found the cause of death for Louis De Rico.," Roxie reports as she enters the office, a coffee cup in hand.
"What? No awful pun for us today? Roxie, are you feeling alright?" Frank asked when he noticed the rather gloom look on the coroner's face.
"Not really... I've just received some bad news," she sighs, taking a sip of her coffee, "anyway, Louis was poisoned by his gas mask. I ran a sample from the mask's filter and found traces of ammonia and chlorine. Louis wore the mask to protect himself from the smoke in the explosion, but those two chemicals in the mask interacted to create chloramine gas. By the time Louis got the mask off, it was too late. The gas mask that was supposed to save his life asphyxiated him!"
"So the gas mask was the murder weapon?!" he cried, shocked.
"Yes. But the killer did leave us some evidence... In addition to the chemicals INSIDE the mask, I found traces of mucus on the outside!" she held up the bag containing the gas mask, "the killer must have left the mucus behind when they tampered with the gas mask. Whoever it is has one heck of a cough!"
"So the killer has a cough! Well, no cough syrup will keep them out of jail with Adalet on the case!" he joked as Hannah joined the small group.
"Adalet, I analyzed that paper you found in the vault. The weird shape on the bottom was a happy accident!" Hannah laughed.
"Why do you say that?" Adalet inquired.
"You see, the shape corresponds to a set of lock picking tools. The killer must have had them out when they were writing the threat," she reasoned, "the killer thought they were pretty smart by not signing the message, but those lock picking tools left an impression in the paper that Adalet's powder revealed!"
"So the killer knows lock picking!" she deduced, "well, they'd better be good at it! They'll have to pick their way out of jail when we're done with them!"
"Adalet, I can't figure out who could have asphyxiated Louis De Rico... I'm fairly certain that it's a member of the heist crew, but what an odd bunch!" Frank remarked as he looked over the current suspect lineup, "Jezebel Lopez was involved in the heist up to her... bra. And we all know there's no honour among thieves... Danny Moto seemed really proud to be in the heist crew. He seems more confident, too... But was he confident enough to kill?"
"As for Eugenia Hestentrope," Adalet looks at the last suspect, "she had a big motive to kill the man who wanted to rob her, and her alibi of her being nowhere near the casino is a bit too convenient if you ask me!"
"Adalet, drop everything and rush to the airport!" Andrea orders, storming out of her office, "Amy's in trouble! She needs your help!"
"Wait, what? What's going on? What kind of trouble?" Frank inquired.
"Is she alright?!" Roxie asked.
"While you were investigating Louis' murder and catching half of the heist team, I sent Amy to the airport, just in case the remaining members tried to flee the country!" Andrea explained, "I didn't expect her to end up in a stand-off with an armed criminal, which is exactly what happened! She's standing her ground but she called for backup. She needs you guys!"
"Damn it!" Frank cursed, "Adalet, we can't leave the kid alone! Let's go to the airport, now!"
"We shouldn't have taken our gear off!" Adalet says, running behind her partner.
"For the last time, sir, drop your weapon! Put... put your hands behind your head and get down on your knees!" Amy orders, her hands shaking slightly as she stands in a stand-off against a buff man wearing a creepy clown mask.
"I'll never give up! I'll never surrender!" the man declared, aiming his rifle at the blonde.
"You're either coming with me or you're going down! What... What's it gonna be?" she asked, stuttering slightly.
"Answer the lady, dirtbag!" Frank shouted as he joined Amy at her side and Adalet snuck up behind the mask-wearing man.
"Oh thank God, you're here!" Amy let out a breath of relief.
"You'll never get me alive, copper!" the clown yells, not noticing the Captain behind him.
But Amy did, "quick, Adalet, grab him!"
With a running start, Adalet used a nearby rock like a springboard and leapt into the air, throwing her arm around the gunman's neck in a headlock. With the enemy confused, Frank took the chance and rushed forward, knocking the rifle out of his hands and helping his partner tackle the gunman to the ground.
"Got him!" Frank grunts as the gunman struggles fruitlessly to get away, "now let's get this mask off and see who the lucky loser is!"
Taking initiative, Amy joined her teammates and ripped the unknown man's mask off his face. The glaring face of Papa Quansha stared back at them as Adalet and Frank managed to get some handcuffs on Papa's wrists and ankles.
"Wait, we've seen you before!" Amy gasped, "you're Papa Quansah! Being a suspect in the murder of Merv Waylon wasn't enough? You were in on this heist, too?!"
"I'm not saying another word!" Papa spat while Adalet and Frank hulled him up onto his feet.
"That's what you think! Once Capt. Adalet starts interrogating you, Quansah, you'll have plenty to say!" she declared.
Frank dragged the criminal down the airport ramp to where their cars were parked to wait for a patrol officer to arrive and escort Papa to the station.
"Thanks for having my back, Adalet. Not sure how that would have ended without you guys..." Amy smiles tiredly, "anyway, I'll go back to the station to debrief. I hope Frank can help you have a look around the airport, check out Quansah's crashed van!"
Amy left the airport ramp and Adalet looked around the wreckage of Papa's van that had crashed into some cacti near the fence. She found a gas mask identical to the one Louis had been holding, except this mask had an orange stain on the forehead. She also spotted a locked wooden crate that must have flown out of the van when it crashed because it was almost a quarter of a kilometre away from the crash site. While she was dragging the crate back towards the crash site, Frank returned from the end of the ramp.
"You found a gas mask in the wreckage of Quansah's getaway van?" Frank picked up the mask to examine his, "looks a lot like the one Louis had in his hand, you're right! And if you can't get a sample of that orange stuff on it, no one can!"
"And here's hoping that whatever is in this crate really wasn't fragile," Adalet says, examining the padlock on the crate.
"And you think that wooden crate holds a clue to finding Louis' killer? Then what are you waiting for? Crack that padlock open!" he grinned.
Adalet froze the lock and shattered it by quickly clenching her hand around it.
Frank blinked, "not the way I was thinking, but it works... Don't let me get in your way, Adalet, have at the contents!"
Flipping open the lid of the crate, Adalet began digging through the ski masks, knives, tasers, and handguns. Towards the middle of the crate, she felt something that reminded her of marbles. Pulling out the three items she felt, she nearly threw them at Frank when she saw what they were.
"What the heck did you find in that crate? Heist equipment and... eyeballs?! That's disgusting!" Frank gagged, seeing what Adalet was holding.

Magic. Math. Not a whole lot of context. Two months ago, I was a wormhole navigator, ripping open a hole in the universe to save a ship of people who only vaguely tolerated me. Two weeks ago, long story short, I threaded an impossible path through the void between dimensions to crash-land into a dungeon. You know the kind: monsters to defeat, corridors full of traps to avoid, and magical powers to earn. I'm not ashamed to admit that it's been two weeks of loneliness, fear, adrenaline, and constant injury. But I'll make it out of here by myself if I have to, or my name isn't Adam Leviathan James. ... too bad the Levi doesn't stand for Leviathan, huh. AN: Expectations should include in medias res, violence, smut, friendship, and powers/progression systems with absolutely an insufficiency of context and (at least at first) no definitions or explanations, and magic-as-programming/engineering (with something of an emphasis on "what if magical runework were an analogue to circuit diagrams").
