《Killer Bay》Programmed to Kill

"Adalet, there's been a break-in at the Meteor Systems robotics factory!" Andrea informed the captain.
"Another problem at Meteor Systems?!" Adalet exclaimed, "but the killer of their last CEO has only just been put to trial."
"That company's security is weirdly inefficient..." Amy commented, "when you think of what they're experimenting on: robots, cloning... You'd expect them to protect those inventions!"
She snorted, "clearly they've never invested in security innovation!"
"Yes," Andrea agrees, "and think of what might happen if this technology falls into the wrong hands! Adalet, get over to the Meteor Systems' robot factory, and make sure nothing's been stolen!"
"Will do, Chief!" Amy saluted, "Adalet, let's go to the factory! But let's be careful! Who knows what we'll find there?"
Adalet grabbed her keys, "I almost don't want to know!"
With their sirens blaring, Adalet and Amy speed off to Meteor Systems' robot factory. When they arrived they found the place deserted of people so they let themselves into the factory. They walked through the large building and stumbled upon the only sign of life in the entire place... Or what had been a sign of life.
Kneeling on a robot assembly platform was the body of a man being held up by the robotic assembly arms. The body was littered with gaping holes allowing the cops to see the man's internal organs and bones in some places. Even stranger than the staging of the body was its glowing red eyes that glowed so brightly they couldn't even tell what colour his eyes were.
Looking around the room Adalet found the control panel for the assembly platform while Hunter was interested in a crate of robotic parts off on the side of the room.
"Oh my goodness, Adalet! We came looking for a burglar, but we found a body!" Amy exclaimed, already calling Roxie and back up to come to get the body.
"Those robotic arms were holding this man in place... Was he being tortured?" Adalet wondered as she approached the body, "and check this out, his eyes are glowing red!"
"And his body is filled with holes...Ugh, it almost looks like something tried to eat him!" she stuck her tongue out in disgust.
"Wait... Haven't we met this guy before?" the captain questioned.
"You're right, this man does look familiar... Didn't we interrogate him in the murder of Ernest Turing?" the rookie questioned.
Adalet gasped, "that's Bob Levene! The man who co-founded Meteor Systems with Turing, before Turing took all the credit for it!"
"But what was he doing here... And who killed him? Could it be whoever broke into the factory?" Amy suggested.
"Speculations aren't what we need right now, what we do need are clues!" she says, getting Loki to attach themself to the control panel, "the killer must have used that control station to operate the robotic arms which were holding the victim up!"
"Think you can unlock it?" she asked.
"Loki's almost got it hacked!" she reported, listening to her pet chirping away in their binary-based language.
"And Hunter found a bunch of robot parts!" Amy says, approaching the crate, "come on, we've got a murder to solve!"
While Lokie finished hacking into the control panel, Amy and Hunter dug through the crate of robotic parts. Most of what was inside were old pieces of robots most likely kept for spare parts, but underneath all the old and weather parts Amy picked out something much newer: a small puck-shaped object with a tiny screen displaying the play button.

"Loki finished hacking the control panel," Adalet says as she disconnects the panel from the machine, "since the station was used to control the robotic arms which held Bob Levene, it could contain essential information! We need to get this control station to Hannah for analysis right away!"
"What's this doo-hickey Adalet?" Amy inquired, holding up the puck-like object.
The captain looked over, "oh! It's a hologram machine! Like the one we found while investigating the murder of Ernest Turing!"
Her eyes lit up in understanding, "I need to press this button to watch the recorded video, right?"
Amy pressed the button on the front of the device, and they watched as a hologram lit up above it with the image of Meteor Systems' newest CEO.
"Oh my goodness, Adalet! That's Karen Knight!" Amy gasped and the hologram's recording began to play.
"This is Meteor Systems' CEO Karen Knight with an urgent message for all Meteor Systems employees," Karen instructs, "if you see Bob Levene on the premises, do not engage him. Call security immediately! This is an order!"
The device turned off after the message finished playing.
"That's the end of the message. Why did Karen Knight single out Bob Levene as a threat?" Amy wondered.
"Whatever the reason is, this is a serious lead. We need to ask Mrs. Knight about her grudge against our victim," Adalet says as Roxie appeared with some backup.
Once the factory was secured, Adalet and Amy left for Meteor Systems' headquarters to ask Karen about her hologram message to her employees regarding the victim.
"Mrs. Knight, according to a hologram we found," Adalet held up the puck, "you wanted your employees to report Bob Levene to security. We'd like to know why."
"Because Bob wouldn't leave us alone! As soon as I became CEO I fired him. He didn't fit the company anymore. But he wouldn't go away!" Karen rants, "Bob's been caught trespassing multiple times at our facilities, so I had all personnel on high alert. Not that it helped much. He managed to bust his way in again! I'm sure he's behind today's break-in!"
"Well, even if he broke in, he won't be a threat to your security anymore. Bob was murdered in your factory," she informed.
"What?! Bob is dead?!" she cried in shock.
"Yes, Mrs. Knight," Amy affirmed, "and you'd better keep your schedule clear until Capt. Adalet finds the killer!"
"So many suspicious things have happened at Meteor Systems over the last few weeks..." Amy comments as they left the CEO's office, "Bob's murder is the icing on the cake!"
"Which is why we should have a look around the headquarters and see if Meteor Systems is hiding anything more from us!" Adalet says as she pressed the elevator button.
"Lead the way!"
Riding the elevator down to the ground floor, Adalet and Amy exited out into the lobby. They searched around the entrance of Meteor Systems for any signs of Bob's visits or his killer's. They found a pile of science magazines stated beside a bench, and a small, realistic scale model of the victim himself.
"So did you find any clues at the headquarters? Magazines and brochures? I'm sure you can rummage through these and find something useful!" Amy reasoned, "but why did you pick up that scale model? The detail is impressive, but..."
"Amy, check out the model's face!" Adalet handed it over to her partner.
"Wait, you're right! That scale model looks just like Bob Levene!" she says, examining the model further, "and there's a tag attached to it! It's faded, but I'll get your dusting kit so I can unveil all the information!"

Adalet opened up her case and Amy grabbed the dusting kit out of it to retrieve the missing inscription on the victim's figurine. Meanwhile, Adalet sifted through the pile of science magazines and brochures until she found something out of place. Written on a scrap piece of white paper was a note addressed to the victim.
"Listen to this, Amy, "Bob, looking forward to working with you!" This was addressed to our victim!" Adalet read out loud, "it wasn't signed, but it looks like the author left a nice fingerprint on it!"
"I bet you can find a match in the database in no time at all, Adalet!" Amy grins, shaking off the excess powder.
She grabs her tablet to begin searching the database, "what did the tag attached to that Bob Levene model say, Amy?"
"The message reads: "Thanks for creating me!" and it's signed by... Aphro-Dyte!" she reported, "isn't Aphro-Dyte the robot we met in our previous investigation? She was Teresa Turing's personal robot! So our victim is the person who built Aphro-Dyte?"
"If he built her, then we'd better have a talk with her about her creator!" Adalet says as she found a match for the fingerprint, "so the fingertip on the letter to our victim belongs to a certain Ambassador Lee..."
"Oh yeah... We know him! He was a suspect in the murder of that cloning researcher, wasn't he?" Amy recalled, "he had hired Ruth Campbell to work for his country, the People's Republic of North Freonia. He wanted her to create a clone army for them! So what did the Ambassador want Bob Levene to do for him? And why do all the people he hires end up dead?!"
"Wondering will get us nowhere, but questions Ambassador Lee will!"
"You're right, Adalet! We need to talk to Ambassador Lee right away!"
Since they were still at Meteor Systems' headquarters, Adalet and Amy gathered up their new clues before heading in search of Aphro-Dyte to ask her about being created by the victim.
"Hello, Capt. Adalet! Yes, I did this SCALE MODEL. Bob is my CREATOR. And I'm grateful to him!" Aphro-Dyte answers after they asked her about the model, "he is a kind CREATOR and visits me at Meteor Systems as OFTEN as he can. Even if he made me the personal ASSISTANT to Teresa Turing, I wanted to show him that I'm still LOYAL to him!"
"Well, someone was not loyal to him, Aphro-Dyte. Bob was murdered..." Adalet informed the robot.
"My CREATOR is no more? A second HUMAN to whom I am close has been UNMADE?" she sounded shocked, "HUMANS are so FRAGILE. How can they BREAK so easily?"
Leaving Aphro-Dyte and Meteor Systems, Adalet and Amy tracked down Ambassador Lee to the local hotel that he was staying at to confront him about his work with the victim.
"Ambassador Lee," Adalet greeted the military man, "we found a letter that you wrote to Bob Levene... something about looking forward to working with him?"
"That's outrageous! I have never written a letter to this Levene you speak of!" Ambassador Lee denies.
"You may have not signed it with a pen, but I matched the only fingerprint on it to you, so what's the story?" she asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Fine. Comrade Levene and I were in contact about working together in a way that could be beneficial for the People's Republic!" he admitted, "but it didn't work out. Comrade Levene had a change of heart."
"He had more than a change of heart. Bob Levene was murdered!" Amy tells them, man.
Ambassador Lee snapped into a salute, "Comrade Levene was murdered?! I'm sorry to hear it. Even if he did not want to work with us, the People's Republic respects geniuses."
"Adalet, this may be the weirdest autopsy I've ever performed!" Roxie announced as she and Hannah entered the office.
"Did you find what happened to Bob Levene, Roxie? What made those holes in his body? And why are his eyes glowing red?!" Amy demanded.
"Well... It's going to sound crazy but bear with me. I, too, was baffled by the gaping holes in the victim's body, so I ran a sample under the scanning electron microscope," as the coroner spoke, Hannah pulled an image of several spider looking robots up on the screen, "and under the microscope, I saw... nanobots! Your victim's blood was crawling with them, and they were still attacking his blood cells!"
"Nanobots? Those teensy robots that could help us stay healthy all the time? Didn't we find documents about that before, Adalet?" she inquired.
"We did," Adalet confirmed, "Roxie, are you telling us that, instead of healing Bob Levene, they KILLED him? The nanobots are the murder weapon?"
"Looks like it!" Roxie replied, "that's also why his eyes are glowing red, by the way. The nanobots are causing more light off the interior surface of his eyeballs!"
"I can't believe it... So Bob Levene was... eaten from the inside by microscopic machines?!" Amy gags, "that may be the scariest thing we've seen so far, Adalet!"
"I still get freaked out thinking about the Puppeteer..." Adalet chewed her lip, "but this is certainly in my top ten!"
"If I may butt in, the nanobots didn't decide to attack him on their own! The killer programmed them to murder Levene!" Hannah reported, "when Roxie told me about the nanobots, I scanned some of them to see how they were operating. And they've been reprogrammed with binary code to become weapons!"
"So you're telling us that the killer has found a way to create a weapon so tiny that nobody would notice it until it's too late? This is chilling!" Amy shivered, "Adalet, we need to catch whoever did this to Bob Levene, right now! What if they program nanobots to attack other people! We must stop them!"
"And at least now we know that the killer knows binary," Adalet updated the killer's profile, "let's hope it helps us zero in on them!"
"I had a look at the control station you found at the crime scene. The station was last used at the time of the murder, which proves the killer used the robotic arms to restrain Bob Levene," Hannah moved on to the other lab sample, "at first, it looked like the killer had just pressed random buttons, like they didn't know how to use the controls... Until I noticed a pattern. And when I fed the pattern into my database, I realized it matched a famous chess endgame study by Leon Lebowsky!"
"Wait, you're telling us the killer made the robotic arms move by following a chess play?" Adalet questioned.
"Yes, whoever uses this play wins no matter what the opponent does. It's like the killer wanted to prove that they'd beaten Bob!" she says confidently.
"And it also means that the killer plays chess! Well, Adalet will ensure that this is the last checkmate they ever made!" Amy declared.
"Adalet, trying to resolve Bob Levene's murder is doing my head in!" Amy complained, cradling her head in her hand, "who could have done this? We know Karen Knight saw Levene as a threat and wanted him stopped at any cost!"
"What about Ambassador Lee? He wanted to work with "Comrade Levene"... Did something go wrong?" Adalet suggested, "then there's Aphro-Dyte... She was created by Levene. And we've already seen one robot turn against its creator..."
"Adalet! I just received an email from the victim!" Hannah yells as she runs into the room.
"How could you have gotten an email from Bob Levene?! He was killed by nanobots!" Amy reminded her teammate.
"No kidding. He programmed the email so it was sent at a later date," she deadpanned, taking over the captain's computer, "anyway, there was a video inside the email, and it's addressed to you, Adalet! Here, I'll show it to you!"
Amy gasped, "so Bob knew he was in danger! But what's this story about someone wanting to... control humans through nanobots? That sounds insane... and dangerous! Especially since the nanobots didn't control Bob, they killed him! What if they attack other people?! We need to stop this killer, Adalet! We need to find more clues!"
"Well, you're in luck. I've already figured out where your victim filmed his video! It's from the Meteor Systems' helipad!" Hannah points to the picture of the helipad she had pulled up on the monitor.
"Great! Amy, there's not a second to lose! Let's go to the helipad," Adalet said, grabbing her case and keys, "Bob may have left more info for us there!"
Heading out the helipad, they quickly searched the area for anything Bob might have left behind while he was filming his video. Adalet found a locked tablet sitting on top of a storage container while Hunter barked to signal she had found something. Amy walked over to the dog and picked up a black small badge with a green powder symbol painted on it.
"Adalet, did you find anything at the helipad?" Amy inquired, looking over, "a tablet? Great! it's locked, but that won't stop you. And this badge..."
"That's Bob's badge! He always wore it!" Adalet says as she gets a closer look at the badge, "there's some kind of brownish substance on it..."
"The clock is ticking, Adalet! Let's collect a sample, quick!" she said as she retrieved a swabbing kit from Adalet's case.
While Amy was swabbing the victim's badge, Adalet hooked the tablet she had found up to her own and launched the hacking program. After a few moments of reconstructing the missing sections of the passcode, the tablet unlocked and lines of code were displayed on the screen.
"You unlocked the tablet you found at the helipad so quickly, Adalet. Let's get it to Hannah for analysis!" Amy says as she finishes collecting her sample.
"And you grabbed a perfect sample of that substance on the victim's badge, Amy!" Adalet praised, "let's get it to Yann!"
"Adalet, the tablet you found at the helipad was encrypted. As you can see, there are just lines of code here," Hannah shows them the codes she was referring to on one of her monitors, "but I managed to decrypt those lines of code into... a video! Trust me, you need to watch it!"
"Nanobots?! That man's talking about the murder weapon!"Amy exclaimed.
"We know him from our previous investigation! He was experimenting on pets!" Adalet glares, "so Dr. Rascher was trying to sell "healing" nanobots to the public? Amy, that's suspicious! Let's go talk to him!"
Leaving the station, Adalet and Amy headed out to the research lab Dr. Rascher was working at to ask him about his commercial for nanobots.
"Dr. Rascher, Capt. Adalet found your video on the healing merits of nanobots and-"
"Yes, nanobots are truly amazing! If programmed to repair existing human cells, nanobots can provide eternal youth!" Rascher explains excitedly.
"Except that Bob Levene was just murdered by nanobots! They clearly didn't make him immortal!" Adalet argues.

The Gods are dead As they bled dry, so did the magic which gave them birth. In the new era of technology, its pathetic remnants must hide in the shadows or be locked away. In the ancient era of magic two beings often stood out: Galileo, an immortal scholar obsessed with knowledge and Angelica, the most loyal servant of the greatest among the now dead Gods. But why are they worthy of mention? Because after millennia of isolation, the two emerge in the new world beyond their reckoning. The entire story is told from the third person, however, each chapter will be told from the perspective of only one of the characters. This will be signified by the first letter of their names after the chapter number to avoid confusion. I submitted this fiction as a [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] as well as a participant in National Novel Writing Month. The original challenge had been to finish this entire faction within the month of November reaching the 55.5k word minimum. This goal had been achieved. I do not own the cover picture
