《Killer Bay》Blood in the Blender

"Adalet, I have an unusual assignment for today: you have to go to a juice bar and sit there for an hour. Have a carrot juice on me!" Andrea ordered.

"Er... Not that I don't like smoothies, but why, Chief?" Adalet inquired.

"It may sound trivial, but make no mistake: it's a very important surveillance operation. That's why I have to send you," she explained.

"Hahaha, carrot juice on a surveillance gig! Don't expect me to go with you, Adalet," Frank leaned back in his chair and propped his feet up on his desk, "I'll be busy monitoring suspicious beer consumption at the bar!"

"Suit yourself, Frank, I was going to send Amy with Adalet anyway. She takes better notes than you," Andrea smirked.

"Don't take it personally, Frank," Amy pats the detective on the head as she walks past, "so, what's the assignment, Chief?"

"A woman named Ruth Campbell, a renowned scientist has been receiving death threats, and she came to us for protection. She thinks a stalker is following her to the juice bar she goes to every day. Which is why I'm sending you there, Adalet," Andrea informed, pulling out a picture from her pocket, "here's her picture. Memorize her features. You mustn't make contact with her, but lookout for any suspicious behaviour from other patrons."

Adalet accepts the picture and takes in the young brunette woman's face, "duly noted, Chief! Amy, let's go to the juice bar!"

"Adalet, the juice bar's closed!" Amy cried as they entered the empty bar, "where is everyone?"

Adalet scratched her head, "no clue... But it smells like someone's been making smoothies and broke the blender!"

"I guess we should go back to the station... We can't carry out surveillance on Dr. Campbell if she's not here," she says, turning to head back out the door.

"Hold it, Amy!" she grabs the officer's shoulder, "I'd still like to have a look around, someone must have been here recently!"

"Does something not feel right?" she inquired.

She hums, "possibly..."

"Alright, let's search the place!"

Walking further into the Juice Bar, Adalet and Amy came across a sickening sight; three blenders were lined up along the bar counter overflowing with a red liquid. Floating at the top of each blender was a body part, a dark-haired woman's head was in one and her limbs were sticking out of the other blenders. Looking beyond the bloody blenders, Adalet noticed a pick card had fallen on the ground while Hunter seemed to have discovered a cooler of juice-making supplies.

"Oh no, I think I'm going to be sick..." Amy covered her mouth as her skin turned green, "there's a human head in those blenders!"

"Hold on a second," Adalet says, approaching the blenders, "take a closer look at the head!"

"No, I don't want to take a closer look, Adalet!" she refused, "the blenders are filled with body parts, it's horrible!"

She moved to stand in front of the other blenders, "just look at the head, Amy, that's all I ask."

"Alright, I'll... I'll look!" she peeked through a gap between her fingers, "the h-head's got dark hair... glasses... Oh my God, you're right! It looks like the woman Andrea wanted us to help! It's... it's Ruth Campbell's body! It's too late to help her! Oh Adalet, this is horrible! Who'd do such a thing to her?! They blenderized her body!"

"Someone with access to too many blenders," Adalet quipped, "but jokes aside, we have to find out who did this!"

"I see you've picked up some juice supplies. We'd better have a look through them," Amy said, refusing to look at the blenders again, "and those pink vouchers advertise a "romantic trip"... for someone called Ruth! That must be our victim! There she was, planning a romantic trip... And now she's turned into purée!"

The captain picked up the card off the floor, "if we can retrieve the rest of the writing on this voucher, it may explain how she ended up in a blender instead of on vacation!"

"And while you do that..." she began walking to the door, "I'm going to call Roxie about this over... Here!"

While Amy called Roxie from a safe distance, Adalet searched through the cooler of juice-making supplies. Digging through the ice cubes, glasses, slices of fruits, decorative umbrellas, and bottles of juice, she found a paper hidden among the items. Someone had drawn a picture of a blender filled with red liquid and a tapped picture of Ruth on top of it. Below the blender, someone had written PREPARE FOR DEATH, MONSTER, in red marker.

"I have a threat addressed to the victim!" Adalet yells over to her partner, "someone pasted her picture on a drawing of a blender, and wrote: "Prepare for death, monster"!"

"The only person who could have done this is the killer!" Amy reasoned returning with newfound determination, "which means this white powder smeared on the image might help us catch them! Let's collect a sample!"

While Amy held the paper over a glass dish, Adalet scraped off the white powder into the dish. Once they had collected enough of the powder, Adalet snapped a lid on the dish to prevent losing any of the powder.

"Great, Adalet, we've collected some white powder from the killer's threat. Let's send it to the lab!" Amy says as Adalet placed the dish off to the side for Roxie to take to the station.

As they continued to wait for the coroner, Adalet picked up the faded voucher. She dusted the faded area and recovered the name of the person with who Ruth was to go on the trip, and discovered that they shared the same last name.

"So the romantic voucher was for Ruth and Nigel Campbell," Adalet read, "Nigel Campbell must be our victim's husband!"

Amy's face fell, "we need to tell Nigel that his wife's been brutally murdered... I'm not looking forward to it, but let's go!"

After waiting a little while longer for Roxie to arrive, Adalet helped the coroner load up the victim's body parts and blenders into the back of her van while Amy carried the dish containing the powder sample for Yann. After informing the owners of the Juice Bar that their business was now a crime scene, Adalet, Amy and Roxie left the building; the coroner to return to the station, and the detectives to head over to the victim's home to inform Nigel Campbell about his wife's murder.

"Ruth is dead?!" Nigel cried after hearing the news, "but... she was everything to me! She was the love of my life!"

"We're sorry to bother you at such a time... But do you have any idea who could have wished your wife harm?" Adalet asked as gently as possible.

"I don't know! Ruth never mentioned anything being amiss... whenever she came home from the lab, she just wanted to forget about work," he sighs, "she was such a brilliant scientist! I wanted her to focus on her career, to change people's lives! So I gave up my job to take care of the housework."

"Not many men would have done that. What kind of research was your wife involved in?" Amy inquired.

"Oh, something to do with genes... but I'm not a scientist, all I know about DNA is that it looks like fusilli pasta.." Nigel confessed sheepishly, "but Ruth spent all her time in her lab. Maybe her vials and tubes and screens will mean something to you..."

"Yes, we'll check that lab. Thank you, Mr. Campbell," Adalet says before making their exit.

Amy checked the victim's file for the address of her lab once they had gotten back into the hummer. Adalet followed the directions given by the GPS to the lab, and the cops made their way inside to look for anything that might help their investigation. The lab was very high-tech with rows of glass cylinders lining the sides of the room filled with green liquid and what looked to be human bodies floating inside. There was other equipment around the room, but neither Adalet nor Amy could make heads or tails of what they might be for.

Walking further into the lab, Adalet saw some broken red and gold pieces of metal on the floor. Picking them up. They looked like they might have been a medal originally, but she couldn't be sure until it was repaired. Holding the pieces in her hand, she walked over to join Amy in front of one of the glass vats.

"Adalet, are those... are those real people, in the vats?! What... what was the victim working on, exactly?!" Amy exclaimed, watching the blurry body inside float up and down.

"I don't know, but this brings back memories I didn't want," Adalet shivered, "but this might be of use!"

"Let's focus on those broken pieces you picked up! I rea-"

"Who are you? What are you doing here?!"

Jumping slightly at the voice, Adalet and Amy looked around for the source of it. Peering around a vat down the line from them was a man... Or who they assumed to be a man. His skin was a sickly grey-green colour covered in warts and his grey hair was severely balding. Most startling was the third arm growing out of the side of his head where his left ear should have been, and the two center fingers on his right hand were fused together.

"Adalet, look out! There's a... with an arm in..." Amy began hyperventilating at the sight before them, "aaaaaaah..."

Amy slumped into a dead faint, Adalet just managing to catch her partner before she hit the ground.

"Amy, we have got to stop doing this," Adalet grunts, slowly lowering the younger woman to the ground.

"I'm sorry, I did not mean to scare her!" the man squeaked.

"It's alright," Adalet smiles, "you just... Surprised her, that's all. She'll be fine in a few minutes. I'm Capt. Adalet, who are you?"

"I am Milo!" Milo chirped, "this is my home!"

"It's nice to meet you, Milo."

"Miss, are you feeling better?" Milo inquired as he watched Amy wake up from a safe distance.

"I... I think so. I just... Your arm... I'm sorry," Amy apologized, holding her hand to her forehead, "I shouldn't have freaked out, I just didn't expect..."

"Mother God warned me that people would be afraid. That's why she never lets me out. Mother God didn't create me right, you see," he explains, shyly waving his third arm.

"Someone... created you? How could th-"

"Let's not get into genetic engineering right now, Amy," Adalet advised, "it's confusing, even for me! But we'd better interrogate Milo properly."

"And let's not forget to have a look at the broken pieces you found in the lab!" she says, standing up, "so, Mr... Milo... You... mentioned being "created" by a... a Mother God?"

"Yes, Mother God made me. I was her first experiment in cloning," he tells them proudly, "it went a bit wrong, as you can see. But Mother God promised to look after me anyway because I was her first creation!"

"Did I... hear that right? You said you were an... experiment in cloning?" she questioned.

"She cloned my DNA in a test tube, using human genetic material! Then she grew my body in a vat until I was this big!" he points to one of the vats then to himself.

"But that's not possible! You can't create a human being in a test tube!" she argued.

Adalet gave her partner a look, "then what am I? Pinocchio? A golem?"

Milo gasped, "you were created by Mother God too?! She builds living things from a few strands of DNA! She grows me new organs in a jar, too, whenever I get sick! She's really good at it now!"

"No, your Mother God didn't create me, Milo, someone else did," she explained, "though I never called them God... But Milo, she won't be able to make you new organs anymore, Dr. Campbell's dead!"

"Mother God is dead? But... that can't be! Who's going to look after me now?" he asked before running off with tears streaming down his face.

"Milo!" Adalet cried, "oh, he's gone now..."

"Gosh, Adalet, that poor man, I don't know what happened to him, but surely he can't be the result of a failed attempt at cloning?" Amy says, "I really can't wrap my head about this!"

"Remind me to talk to you about my "birth" again," Adalet shakes her head with a smile, "but if Dr. Campbell really managed to create a whole being out of DNA strands... Then she really took Human science a step further!"

"Unless Milo made up this story to cope with his deformities..." she theorized, but didn't sound too confident, "I guess the only way to reveal the truth is to investigate further!"

Given that they couldn't ask Milo any more questions, Adalet began working on the broken pieces she had found. She glued the metal back together and saw that it was a red and gold medal with the word People's Republic above a crossed sickle and rake.

"Adalet, the object you restored looks like a military medal! It's an odd thing to find in a science lab..." Amy commented, "the medal is engraved with "People's Republic"... It doesn't ring a bell."

"Me neither," Adalet agreed, "but maybe it will for the database! It should tell us more about the medal... and the person who lost it here!"

Grabbing her tablet, Adalet pulled up the database for international military medals and submitted a basic description of the medal they had found. After comparing images the database had generated of possible matches, she figured out which country the medal was from and a list of who it had been awarded to.

"According to the database, the medal is a unique Medal of Merit, awarded to a certain Ambassador Lee," Adalet read the only name on the list, "the file says Ambassador Lee represents the People's Republic of North Freonia: a small country led by a military dictator!"

"Dictatorships are never good news, but we can't let anyone intimidate us!" Amy declared with determination, "let's ask Ambassador Lee how his medal ended up in our victim's lab."

After getting the address for the hotel the Ambassador was staying at, Adalet and Amy left Ruth's lab to go ask Ambassador Lee how his medal ended up in their victim's lab.

"Ambassador, I'm Capt. Adalet," Adalet flashed the man her badge, "my partner Amy and I found your medal in Dr. Ruth Campbell's lab. Could you tell us how it ended up there?"

Ambassador Lee snapped into a salute, "I must've lost it when I visited Comrade Campbell's lab. She is a great scientist. The People's Republic is very proud of her."

"Comrade... er, Dr. Campbell was working for the People's Republic?" Amy inquired, confused.

"The People's Republic is a great supporter of science. And Innovation Valley is the cradle of cutting-edge technology. We sponsored Dr. Campbell's research!" Ambassador Lee explained happily.

"Really? And what did you wa-"

"Long live the Republic!" he shouted, cutting off her question, "this information is classified, Comrade Adalet! Our Beloved Leader will shoot me if I talk!

"Alright. Well, you should know that Dr. Campbell is dead. Her research has just come to a halt," Adalet responded.

"Dead, you say?! This is terrible! I must find a new scientist now, or our Beloved Leader will kill me!" Ambassador Lee exclaimed nervously.

"Adalet, you know I'm not squeamish about the human body. Not even when it's turned into pulp in a blender... but mixing it with beet juice? That's disgusting!" Roxie fake gagged.

"Roxie, can you please not joke about this..." Amy pleaded uncomfortably.

"It's not a joke! The killer first cut Ruth into pieces, probably with some kind of saw... But the killer didn't just throw random fruits into the blenders! The ingredients form a perfect balance of acidic and alkaline compounds," she explained seriously, "you see, Adalet, smoothie making is a science. The killer chose fruits that attack the flesh, which made it easier to turn the body into pulp. This wasn't luck, this was a recipe!"

"Oh God, Roxie," the rookie was looking a little green, "I hope you're not about to tell us that the killer actually drank from those blenders!"

She laughed, "I doubt it. Nevertheless, this killer knows their smoothies like a bartender knows cocktails!"

"So a smoothie enthusiast killed our victim? Alright..." she made a note of the fact, "I hope this case doesn't put me off my five fruits a day forever, Adalet!"

"And hopefully Yann's results are less gross!" Adalet laughed, turning to the forensics expert, "right, Yann?"

"Don't worry, Adalet, the white powder you collected from the killer's threat was a pharmaceutical cocktail!" Yann replies happily, "the powder contains epinephrine, hepcidin, motilin... A mix often given to people suffering from global hormonal deficiencies."

"So the killer is taking hormones?" she deduced.

"Well, the killer may be trying to reach a hormonal balance, but the balance of the law will tip against them once we've caught them, Adalet!" Amy declared.

"Adalet, this case is a nightmare! A woman blended into a pulp, a three-armed man who claims to be a clone... It's madness!" Amy cried.

"Deep breaths, Amy," Adalet orders, "we can't lose control now!"

"You're right, I'll get a grip. The basic principle of science is to rely on the facts alone. What do we know for sure?" she asks, focusing on the monitor containing their suspect lineup and profile, "Dr. Ruth Campbell was gruesomely murdered. She'd requested police help because she thought she was being followed."

"Her husband told us Ruth worked a lot. But their relationship was happy: Nigel supported her career, and they were planning a romantic vacation," the captain takes over, "her research must have been important, although we aren't sure what it was about. Milo says Dr. Campbell experimented with human cloning, but it's hard to believe!"

"Adalet!" they turned to face the Chief as she entered the office looking confused, "there's someone here demanding to talk to you! And she says her name is Ruth Campbell!"

Adalet frowns, "but... but Ruth Campbell's dead! Who is thi-"

"Capt. Adalet, I'm Ruth Campbell! Why do I keep hearing that I'm dead?!" a woman who looked just like the victim except for her red hair appeared behind the Chief.

"What?! That's impossible! You can't be Ruth Campbell! Adalet found her pureed remains in blenders!" Amy argued.

"Well... alright... I'm not... exactly the Ruth Campbell I appear to be. But I can only explain it to you in private, Capt. Adalet," Ruth replied nervously.

"What is this nonsense about? We're investigating a murder and we don't even know who is dead? I'm not having this on my watch!" Andrea announced, "Adalet, I want you to go to the victim's house and untangle this mess! And Miss "Campbell", don't leave the station! Capt. Adalet will interrogate you further."

"Right away, Chief!" Adalet salutes.

Leading the woman claiming to be Ruth Campbell out of the office and into an interrogation room, Adalet directed her to sit in one of the chairs while Amy and she took the pair opposite of the suspect.

"Alright. I know this will be hard to believe but bear with me Capt. Adalet... I'm a clone," Ruth confessed.

"A clone? Like Milo? But you look completely normal!" Amy remarked.

"That's because with me, Ruth used her own DNA and the experiment was successful. Perhaps too successful..." she muttered under her breath, "the real Ruth Campbell is dead, but if her killer finds out I exist, what's stopping them from murdering me, too? I don't want to die because of her!"

"You look exactly like the victim," Adalet agreed, "except for your red hair."
