《Killer Bay》Uncivil Rights

"Hey, Adalet. I heard about your last case... Are the rumours true? The killer was a robot?!" Frank asked.

"Oh yes!" Adalet confirmed, "Dante ordered the robot's chip to be wiped, it was strange, to say the least..."

"I can't believe it! There are thinking robots in Innovation Valley, and they can kill people! This is insane! I'm getting suspicious of my coffee machine!" he exclaimed, side-eyeing the machine in question.

"There's a difference between robots and machines, Frank! Some people around here are even talking about giving the sentient robots rights, just like humans!" Hannah argues, "the Mayor of Innovation Valley, Annette Arbor, even based her recent campaign on robot rights! She got re-elected, and she's now planning a law that would recognize the most evolved robots as members of society!"

"The Mayor wants to give civil rights to machines?! Great. Next thing you know, they'll be taking our jobs!" Frank spat.

"It's already happening, Frank. A lot of people are accusing robots of stealing jobs from human workers," Andrea sighed, "there's a lot of unrest because of that proposed Robot Act. And that's why I want you to patrol the Android Graveyard, Adalet. It's the perfect place for people to plan trouble!"

Adalet blinked, "robots have graveyards?"

"What, do they conduct robot funerals, sing robotic hymns, that kind of thing?!" Frank inquired, throwing his hands up.

Andrea pinched the bridge of her nose, "... Adalet, take Frank with you to the graveyard. And while you're at it, try and find a robot to replace him!"

"I'll see if I can find one that runs on whiskey!" Adalet replied, grabbing Frank's wrist and tugging the still ranting man along behind her.

Heading to the scrap yard Andrea had directed them to, Adalet and Frank arrived after a quick drive. The scrapyard was rather large so Adalet set Hunter loose to investigate the area for anything that smelled strange. Meanwhile, she and Frank followed at a slower pace, looking around as they walked.

Reaching the compacting area, Hunter seemed to be interested in an object crushed into a cube, so Frank approached the dog to see what it was. As the detective did that, Adalet looked around and noticed someone had locked the control panel of the crane, and a torn poster on the ground in front of the cube.

"What the..." Frank stopped as he got a good look at the cube, "please tell me this isn't what I think it is, Adalet? It's not a body crushed like a used car, right?"

Adalet came over, "alright, I won't tell you."

"I think I'm going to be sick," he gagged, "Adalet, what's the deal with the sash on its... I don't even know what that bit is supposed to be, everything's squashed together!"

"It's a mayoral sash!" she gasped, recognizing the red, white, and blue stripes.

"Which means this... this is Annette Arbor, the Mayor of Innovation Valley!" he concluded, "Adalet, these are dangerous waters! A politician found boxed into a cube-like an old Chevy? Someone's trying to send a message! And they must have used the graveyard's car crusher to turn her into such a perfect cube! That's our murder weapon!"

"Then they took the body out using that crane..." she continued, walking over to remove the crane's control panel, "which means we should examine the crane's control panel!"

"I'm more doubtful as to why you picked up those bits of paper," he nods to the pile of torn paper Hunter was guarding, "but you're the genius, not me. Let's piece it back together!"

While Frank called in the murder, Adalet took a closer look at the control panel. It had a keypad on the touch screen, and she noticed faint smudges of grease or something else on some of the buttons. She pressed those buttons, and it took a couple of tries to select the correct order, but soon the control panel flashes green and unlocked.

"Good going decoding that control panel you found in the android graveyard!" Frank praised, ending his phone call, "we know the killer used this control panel to operate the crane to take Abhor out of the crusher. Let's get it to Hannah to find out more!"

Placing the control panel off to the side, Adalet picked up the torn pieces of paper. She taped each piece back together, and they saw that it was a promotional poster for Mayor. But it wasn't the victim's face that was on it but rather a middle-aged man's.

"Nice catch, Adalet. That paper you found at the graveyard was some sort of political campaign poster! The poster says "It's time for a change. Vote Boehner for Mayor"...," Frank, reads, "didn't Hannah mention our victim had recently been elected Mayor? This poster must date back to the election campaign!"

"Which means we've just found our victim's opponent, and the guy who lost the election against her!" Adalet replies, reading the name of the opposing party, "let's go talk to this Mr. Boehner!"

After waiting for Roxie to arrive and take away the body, while cracking a few square jokes, and the control panel, they all left the scrapyard. After searching up an address for the man on the promotional poster, Adalet and Frank drove out to the political office building to ask Howard Boehner about his political connections with the victim.

"Great to meet ya, Captain!" Howard flashed her a bright smile as he shook her hand after introductions were made, "please, call me Howard. I'm not like the other politicians, you know. I'm a regular Joe."

"We came here to talk about Annette Arbor, the woman who beat you in the Mayoral race. She's been murdered," Adalet informed him bluntly.

"She's dead? Dang! I mean, she had her share of enemies," he explained, "but I can't believe someone actually killed her!"

"You mean she had enemies other than you?" Frank asked.

"We weren't enemies, just political opponents. I actually like Annette, even though her ideas were completely misguided," Howard chuckled, "she made a lot of people unhappy with her talk of a Robot Act. Many hard workers felt like she didn't care about their problems... Maybe you should look into it, Capt. Adalet."

They thanked Howard for his time, then left the political office.

"I don't trust that Boehner guy one bit," Frank announced, "but he does have a point. Our victims probably made enemies by befriending those soda cans they call robots. Let's go have a look at City Hall! Annette's office should tell us more about who her enemies were."

Heading over to city hall, they were immediately escorted to the Mayor's office and given full access to the room. Frank and Adalet searched around for any clues that might identify people connected to the victim, especially those who held a grudge against her. At her desk, they found a faded gold medal on top and a torn photo on the floor underneath.

"Look at this place, Adalet!" Frank spreads his arms, "this is where our tax dollars go. On a bunch of nice stuff for the Mayor!"

Adalet rolls her eyes, "if I remember correctly, we're here to solve a murder, not cretic politicians!"

"Sorry, I'll focus... And great, more ripped-up paper. You've got a fetish for that stuff. I'll let you piece it back together..." he smirked, "but it's nice of you to give me a medal! Does it say "Frank Knight: Best Cop in Town"?"

"You think I'll give you a medal after trying to guess my fetishes?" she gave him a half-hearted glare, "try again."

He flushed, "haha, just kidding. Alright, let's retrieve whatever's engraved on this medal!"

Adalet shakes her head as she dusts the medal. Once the powder had sunk into the engravings, she shook the medal to remove all of the excess powder then flipped it over to read the engravings.

"The medal reads, "The Annette Arbor Award for Excellence," and it's been awarded to a certain Sunny," Adalet reads, "We should figure out who this is!"

"You think this Sunny is worth interrogating? Alright," he takes the medal from her, "let's get this medal to Hannah so she can track them down."

While Frank held on to the medal, Adalet taped up the torn photo they had found. In the image, they saw their victim, who looked to be several years younger, holding a little girl in her arms. While the victim was smiling at the child, the young girl had a deep scroll on her face and it was clearly directed at the Mayor.

"So that paper you found in the Mayor's office was a photograph of the Mayor. She looks much younger," Frank remarked, "who's that angry kid she's holding? Why would our victim keep such a photo?"

"She must have kept it for a reason..." Adalet mused, "so maybe the child in this picture is important!"

"Well, why not have a look in the database, find out who she is?" he suggested, "she must be all grown up now."

"Great idea, Frank!" Adalet agreed, grabbing her tablet.

After she uploaded a copy of the young girl's face into the database, she compared the child's features to those of some auto-generated aged images. After matching up the features, the database provides her with a name and basic information about the girl.

"That was quick!" Frank comments, "so, the girl in that picture is a certain Colbie Arbor..."

"The same last name as our victim! She must be her daughter!" Adalet reasoned, "we'd better go talk to Miss Arbor!"

They ended up not having to go far to talk to Colbie Arbor about her mother's death. They nearly ran into the young woman as they were exiting the Mayor's office. After some quick introductions, and an explanation as to why they were there, they began asking Colbie some questions.

"I just can't believe Mom's dead..." Colbie sobbed, "I never got to tell her h-how much I loved and r-respected her!"

"Colbie, we're really sorry for your loss..." Adalet says sincerely, "but we need to ask you some questions."

"I'll help in any way I can," she promised, "We never really got on, but she was still my mom!"

"So this picture Adalet found is pretty accurate?" Frank guessed, holding it up, "you didn't get along?"

"We didn't. Her career always came before her own daughter. And when robots started evolving, she was fascinated; it was like I didn't exist anymore!" Colbie cried, cleaning her glasses with a blue rag, "of course, now that I'm older, I've come to understand her decisions. Getting ahead in politics is hard work! I just wish I'd had time to tell her I f-forgave her!"

"Seriously, Adalet, you are such a square! Whoever killed the Mayor obviously thought outside the box!" Roxie laughed.

"Roxie, could you carry on with the autopsy without referencing squares, cubes or boxes?" Frank asked, still irritated.

"I'll try... Anyway, I found something interesting in your victim's mouth... A coin!" she held up the gold object, "I didn't know what to make of it, but I thought the boy wonder might have an idea on the subject..."

"Oh no, don't tell me you called Russe-"

"Hello, Adalet!" Russell cut in, knowing the Captain would be happy to see him, "I'll cut right to the chase: this coin was deliberately left in your victim's mouth by the killer!"

"And how can you be so sure of that?" Adalet inquired.

"Because that coin isn't an ordinary coin. Its two faces are the same!" he explained and Roxie flipped the coin a few times to show them the identical faces.

Frank snorted, "ha, that'd be a good thing to have when playing heads or tails! You'd always win!"

"My point exactly," Russell smirked, "the killer left this coin in your victim's mouth as a message: "You gambled and lost"."

"So our killer is a gambler?" Adalet deduced with a hum.

"Well, they shouldn't have started gambling with people's lives- the game only ends with Adalet sending them to prison!" Frank joked.

Thanking Roxie and Russell for the information, Adalet and Frank moved onto the tech lab to see what Hannah had discovered about the control panel and award medal they had sent her.

"I've seen control panels like the one you found at the graveyard before, Adalet. When I was a kid, I broke into a scrapyard and crushed some cars... happy days," Hannah sighs recalling the memory.

"Thanks for the weird memories Hannah," Frank grunted, "but can you tell us anything about the investigation?"

"Well, there were no fingerprints," she starts with, "but I can tell you one thing: this control panel is made for professionals! It's not like anyone could just turn it on and make the crane move!"

"So you're saying... Nah, I have no idea what you're saying," he gave up.

"I'm saying that your killer has advanced knowledge of mechanics! That's the only way they could have used that control panel!" she clarified.

Adalet nods, "so the killer knows advanced mechanics... What about the medal?"

"That medal you found at the Mayor's Office packed quite a surprise, Adalet!" Hannah replied, picking up the medal, "it turns out Annette Arbor awarded this prize... to a robot! I imagine it was part of her campaign to give robots equal rights."

"Awarding a medal to a piece of metal... Nonsense! That's a dead-end, Adalet," Frank complained.

"Not at all! Sunny can talk, just like Per-Sephone. And he works at the android graveyard! He's tasked with operating the crusher!" Hannah explained.

"...You're telling us a can of tomatoes is an actual lead? That we have to treat it as a suspect?!" he cried, the tech nodded, "great. Adalet, you're doing the talking. There's no way I'm interrogating a... an object!"

Adalet chuckled, "aliens you can live with, but robots are where you draw the line? Fine, let's go!"

Returning to the android graveyard, Adalet and Frank searched for Sunny. Hannah had shown them a picture of the robot, so it was relatively easy to find him amongst all of the machinery.

"Sunny does not have time to TALK. Sunny has WORK to do!" Sunny says, the moment he caught sight of them approaching.

"Jeez, who knew toasters could get so aggressive?" Frank complained, shielding his face from the flying tools the robot's many arms were brandishing, "we just want to ask you a few questions about the Mayor!"

"Sunny LOVES the Mayor. She is a HERO. She says, "Robots are people too"!" he proclaimed.

"Well... She's dead," he reported.

"NO. This cannot be! Mayor was a FRIEND. She gave Sunny a MEDAL, to say "thank you" for Sunny's WORK!" he cried, his green optics turning red, "she was building a better WORLD, for humans and robots. Now she is DEAD? Sunny wonders what will happen next. VIOLENCE, maybe..."

"Is that a threat?! You toasters had better not be planning revenge for this murder!" the detective warned.

"Frank!" Adalet grabbed her partner's arm to hold him back.

"Robots are peaceful. Sunny is PEACEFUL. It is HUMANS you should be WORRIED about," Sunny declared.

"I don't like this, Adalet. The Mayor crushed into a bloody cube... That doesn't bode well! I'm sure it's got something to do with her robot activism! Giving rights to robots, what a crazy idea!" Frank rolls his eyes, "and talking about robots, I still can't believe you made me talk to one, Adalet! I felt like a right fool! As for our victim's daughter... My heart breaks for the kid. Even though they didn't get along, she still looked devastated."

"Adalet, we have an emergency! Riots are breaking out in Innovation Valley! People are rising against robots!" Andrea announced, exiting her office.

"What?!" Adalet cried.

"Whoa, you mean people are actually fighting about robots?! Who'd have thought pieces of metal could cause so much trouble!" Frank remarks.

"Do we know who is rioting, Chief?" she inquired.

"The people responsible for this are the members of the Anti-Robot League, also known as "ARL." They've been campaigning against your victim's Robot Act," Andrea informed them, "they've never been so violent before, though... I fear the Mayor's murder is adding oil to the fire! Adalet, go to the Anti-Robot League headquarters. I'm sure their sudden uprising is linked to your investigation!"

"Robots steal our jobs! Say no to robots today!" the groups of rioters chant, brandishing their signs and fists.

"What the..." Frank says under his breath.

"I'm not sure..." Adalet whispered back.

"Say NO to the Robot Act!" The rioters continued, showing no sign of backing down.

Adalet covered her ears, "Frank!"

"Say no more!" Frank replied. He cleared his throat before facing the rioters, "EVERYONE SHUT UP!"

The rioters quickly hushed up at the detectives shouting, immediately dropping their hands and lowering their signs.

"Good. Now pack up your stuff and go home! There won't be any rioting today, d'you hear?!" Frank yells.

"Your headquarters are now part of a murder investigation!" Adalet took over, "now make yourselves scarce so we can have a look around!"

Once the rioters had cleared the area, Frank and Adalet entered the ARL headquarters and began looking around. They found a wooden crate full of protesting items tucked behind a desk, a faded newspaper article that had fallen onto the floor, and a broken sign near the entranceway.

"This place is a mess! These guys should spend less time rioting and more time tidying!" Frank grunted, "anyway, did you find anything connected to Annette Arbor's murder, Adalet?"

"A newspaper, a broken sign, and a wooden crate!" Adalet listed, already digging through the wooden crate of protesting supplies.

"A newspaper article? Who knew protesters liked to read... Reckon you could clean it up and find out what it's about?" he glanced at the faded article, "and what's that? If you're collecting kindling to set this place on fire, I'm with you!"

Her hand closed around something hard and cold, "we are not committing arson, Frank, I think the pieces are connected to the murder!"

"Well, you'd better put it back together then," he replied, "and that crate looks like it's stuffed with all sorts of protest things!"

"Plus some bonus items," she says, showing him the robotic arm she has discovered.

"What the... Why is there blood all over that robotic arm, Adalet?! And what was it doing in the Anti-Robot League's rioting gear? Is that like a war trophy?!" he wondered.

She holds it out towards him, "want to hold it, Frank?"

"No, I'm not touching it!" he refused, backing up, "just send that arm to the lab, let them deal with it!"

Adalet laughed as she placed the robotic arm down. Moving on to the pile of broken wood, she used duct tape on the backsides of the pieces to hold them together. After securing the pieces with one last trip of grey tape, she flipped the sign over to see what was painted on the front.

"Nice work, that broken object was a protest sign. It reads, "Arbor! Give us back our jobs!" Frank read out loud, "look at that skull and that drawing of the Mayor! Whoever made this sign really put their heart into it!"

"And if this sign was used at a protest, Hannah might be able to track down the one who used it!" Adalet suggested.

"That sounds like a challenge," he smirked, taking the sign and resting it on his shoulder, "she'll be thrilled!"
