《Killer Bay》The Ties That Bind

"Adalet, I can't believe Spangler told us he helped an alien escape! As if we'd ever believe that crazy talk!" Frank grunts as they drive out to the festival site, "and now he wants to meet him in some sort of festival in the middle of the desert?"
"He never said what type of festival it was," Adalet recalled.
"I checked, it's a gathering of weirdos who get their kicks from drinking beer and then burning a big statue, I know, Adalet, it makes zero sense. But you know, kids these days..." he rolls his eyes, "makes you wonder, what is Spangler really up to? Why would he go to a place like that? And why does he need you? Something doesn't seem right."
"I might not follow theories about aliens, but we need to find out what Spangler is up to!" she responded.
"I don't believe in aliens either, but I love a good mystery. Let's go to that festival!" he grins, making a sharp turn to the right.
"What the hell is up with this place, Adalet? Looks like those hippies just passed the ultimate acid test!" Frank exclaimed, looking around the deserted area, "and of course they didn't clean up after themselves when they left! The place is a mess!"
"I don't see Spangler though," Adalet frowned as they approached the festival grounds.
"I really don't get why Spangler wanted us to come here. Can you have a look around and see if you can find him?" he asked.
"Hunter! Bulmak!" she ordered and the dog ran off in search of Spangler.
While Hunter was searching for Colonel Spangler, Adalet and Frank split up and began looking around the area as well. Adalet found a faded flyer blowing around in the breeze and a video camera one of the festival attendants must have forgotten. As she picked up the items she heard Frank calling for her from near the main festival grounds.
"What is it, Frank?" Adalet asks as she stepped up on the raised platform.
"Can't we visit a place without tripping over a dead body?" Frank complained, gesturing to the corpse Hunter had found.
She gasped, "it's Colonel Spangler!"
"You think it's Colonel Spangler?" he frowns, looking closer, "those medals... that mustache! No, that's impossible! We've known Spangler for ages, he's always been around! And now you're telling me he's dead? I just can't believe it! Sure, I didn't like the guy, but he didn't deserve to end up burnt to a crisp like this, it's so undignified!"
"No one does," Adalet agrees, noticing a footprint near the body.
"Why did he want us to come here? Did he know he was in danger?" Frank wondered.
"It's possible," she replies, "but to know what we're up against, we need to solve his murder!"
"Hopefully this video camera you picked up will give us a visual on what happened here, You'll just have to unlock it first!" he added, seeing the lock icon on the screen.
"This footprint is fresh," she remarks, "it's not yours, is it?"
He shook his head, "nope! But you're right, and it's facing away from the murder as if our killer fled the crime scene! Can you run it through the database, Adalet?"
She pulls out her table, "I'll have the results in a minute! And check out this flyer, it's definitely missing something!"
"Don't expect me to work on that piece, you're the one with magic skills," he smirked.

"I would expect nothing less from you, Frank," she teased, "and check this out, the footprints the killer left at the crime scene are from military boots!"
"So the killer wears army boots! They think they can walk away from us, but I promise I'll soon put my own feet in their face!" he vowed.
Adalet added the piece of evidence to the killer's profile before moving on to the video camera she had found. She plugged it into her tablet and began cracking the code. Surprisingly, the code was short and simple to crack, which made it even more surprising when Colonel Spangler's face appeared on the small screen.
"On a roll, Adalet!" Frank cheered.
"There's a video running and Spangler's in it!" Adalet says as the video begins auto-playing, "we'd better watch it."
"Now that's unexpected! So Spangler was willing to die to save another person's life? He doesn't sound like a bad guy after all, don't you think, Adalet?" Frank remarks.
"No, he certainly doesn't..." Adalet agrees, packing up the video camera.
"But all this alien stuff still sounds crazy... and it also sounds like it cost Spangler his life!" he sighs, "he said we would find answers at the oasis..."
"And we should head there immediately!" she says, but first picked up the flyer to work on.
After dusting the flayer with her carbon powder, Adalet noted that it was actually a promotional flyer for the festival. It featured a UFO flying above the burning man statue, and the title of the festival along with the name of the one hosting it was written in a groovy font beside the images.
"I guess I should say that's work, Adalet, you've recovered this flyer's contents! So what's it about?" Frank asks.
"Peace, Aliens, Music: Alien Festival," Adalet reads.
"So this is all about aliens, huh?" he raised an eyebrow, "the flyer also mentions the festival is hosted by a certain Ezra Hope."
"Oh know him!" she says, "I met Ezra when Amy and I investigated Bruce Green's death!"
"Well, let's go bust Ezra's chops, then!"
Once Roxie had come and taken the body away, Adalet and Frank headed out to talk to Ezra and then go to the hidden oasis. They found the hippie not far from the festival, in fact, he was just outside the fairgrounds.
"Groovy, Capt. Adalet," Ezra greeted, "you came to join the festival! When we light up that big statue, the aliens will come and spread peace all over Earth! It's gonna be off the hook!"
"So much for peace! An Army Colonel has been murdered at your festival. His name was Colonel Spangler," Frank informed.
"Woah, bad karma!" he laughed, "he was a military guy, you say? We don't see many of those around here! We're all about peace and welcoming the aliens to our planet, nothing to do with war!"
"You keep talking about the aliens coming... You know they don't exist, right?" he asks.
"Rude, dude!" he glares, "listen, I don't know anything about this Spangler guy and I don't want trouble. I just hope you catch whoever did this so the festival can go on. Namaste and good luck!"
After locating the location of the oasis Spangler wanted them to find, they drove out to the area to search for clues. The oasis was a beautiful place, with almost crystal clear water flowing from a rippling waterfall, and stones and trees surrounded the river. Searching the area, Adalet found a crate full of weapons with the name "SPANGLER" marked across the front of it. Meanwhile, Hunter found a faded paper sunk underneath a small rock.

"Wow, is that a crate of weapons? Looks like Spangler came here prepared for war! If you want to search through it, be careful!" Frank advises as he picks up the paper Hunter found, "but what about this paper? It was addressed to Spangler, but the rest of the message is faded."
Adalet opened her mouth.
"I know, we should recover what this message says..." he says for her, "and when I say "we", I mean you!"
She laughed, "well then, hand it over!"
Frank passed the paper to his partner while he decided to search the crate of weapons. Adalet dusted the faded area of the paper above the photo paper-clipped to it and recovered a short message addressed to Colonel Spangler. But the signature was just a five-digit code, no other name was mentioned on the page.
"You're done wasting time on retrieving messages from old letters, Adalet?" Frank inquired, pulling something out of the box.
Adalet smirked, "well this letter was addressed to Spangler, and it says: "Meet me here". I think "here" is the oasis, considering the picture. But there's no name, just numbers."
"Numbers are Hannah's specialty! Let's send her this letter right away!" he decided, "and I've decided Spangler was beyond paranoid, he carried enough army gear for a whole squad!"
"What's that you picked up?" she asked, seeing the GPS-like device Frank was holding.
"This device looks like a tiny radar... seems pretty useless, anyway," he says, shaking the device, "I never know how these things work! Maybe shaking it will do something?"
"Freeze! Nobody move!"
Adalet and Frank leapt to their feet, spinning around and drawing their guns on the new arrival. Agent Z greeted them, standing on one of the higher rocks, his own gun trained on them.
"Woah, drop that gun, whoever you are!" Frank orders back.
"Agent Z, so nice to see you again!" Adalet says sarcastically.
"What, Adalet, you know that man?" the other detective frowns, "Oh I see, that's the Agent from the Government Investigation Authority, the GIA!"
"I just got a signal from one of the trackers I put on Colonel Spangler!" Agent Z says in place of further explanation.
"Easy, cowboy. Spangler's dead," Frank says, holstering his gun, "but please stick around, we got some questions for you."
"So Agent Z, you put a tracker in Spangler's belongings that kept you updated on his every move, why?" Adalet asked, following her partner's lead.
"I am not entitled to share this information with you," Agent Z answers, finally putting his gun away.
"Hey, just because you're a fancy GIA agent in a $10,000 suit doesn't mean you can play smart with us!" Frank barked.
"Ah, I guess it doesn't matter now that he's dead. Spangler went rogue recently. He allegedly stole material from his research and development site for a personal agenda," the other man tells them, "you know how sensitive the GIA is about secrets. We don't take chances. If a Colonel disobeys, well... It means we have a situation. Spangler was under surveillance, hence the tracker, but it looks like he's not a problem anymore."
"Hey Adalet, I'm sorry about Spangler... How are you holding up?" Roxie inquiries lacking her usual flamboyant personality.
"It's sad but he won't want us standing around crying," Adalet smiles, "we have a murder to solve, and I hope your autopsy will give us a clue to who killed him."
"Right. Anyway, I'm not sure how the fire started, but it was violent. I'd say a Molotov cocktail, but you'll have to find remnants to be 100% sure," she started, "Spangler would have had more chance of escaping the fire if he hadn't been strapped with a spelunking harness in the first place."
"Spell-o-what?" Frank repeated incorrectly.
"Spelunking," Adalet corrects, "or caving if you like. It consists of exploring natural caves."
"Not for a city slicker like you!" Roxie teased.
"So the killer enjoys exploring caves? Well, I hope they can also dig tunnels because that's one skill that could be helpful in prison!" he joked.
Adalet's face fell, "aw man, I got something in common with the killer?!"
Roxie laughed, "that's right, you've gone spelunking before!"
"Don't worry, Letty, I'm sure there are worse things to have in common," Hannah assured her, "and I gotta admit the numbers on that letter which was addressed to Spangler tested my resourcefulness!"
"How so?" Adalet asked.
"I ran a battery of tests, binary, post binary, floating-point algorithms... Until I mistakenly tapped the number into our database and it gave me Chief Marquez's profile!" she exclaimed, clearly still shocked by her results, "these numbers correspond to Chief Marquez's service number! She's the one who wanted to meet with Spangler!"
"ANDREA? Andrea wanted to meet up with Spangler? At his secret hideout?" Frank clarified, "that better not be for a secret date or I swear I'll..."
"Frank!" Adalet cut in, "you can't re-kill the dead, and even if you could it wouldn't solve anything!"
"Sorry, Adalet, I know, temper and all," he apologized.
"It's alright," she smiles, "well, that is, the fact that we now need to talk to our Chief, however..."
"... as a suspect?" he finished, not wanting to believe it, "I guess you're right, we do need to treat Andrea as a suspect. It just seems so unbelievable..."
They thanked the two for their results, then headed over to the Chief's office to confront her about meeting with Colonel Spangler just before his death. After knocking on the office door, Andrea called out that they could come in.
"Hey Andrea," Adalet says as Frank and she enters the room, "there's something we would like to talk to you about..."
"Is it about Spangler's case? You found the killer and we can call it a day, is that what you came to tell me?" Andrea looked worried as she asked them the question.
"Not exactly. Adalet found this letter you sent to Spangler," Frank holds it up, "and well, you know the drill: collect clues, interrogate suspects..."
"Oh, I understand. It's perfectly fine," the Chief reassured them, "I will answer anything you ask me. And it is true! I met with Spangler."
"Why would you need to see Spangler? And why in the middle of the desert?" he demands, obviously confused.
"I said I would answer all your questions, but I never said I would do it now," she sighs standing up, "sorry, Adalet, I just need some time. But be sure that sooner or later, you will know everything."
"But Andrea..."
"This is not up for debate, Frank! A killer is roaming free, why are you still standing here?" she demands, shoving them out of her office.
"What do you think Andrea's hiding from us, Adalet?" Frank pondered as they returned to their desks.
Adalet sighs, "I don't know... But what I do know is that it's highly suspicious and frankly upsetting but right now we should focus on the facts and see how this investigation unfolds.
He nods in agreement, "come on, let's get back to work."
"Okay, Adalet, Spangler used to ruin our day, but him getting killed is the frosting on the cake! I mean, we've been dealing with such weird stuff!" Frank complains, "top of the list: Andrea's behaviour is decidedly odd. She admitted she met with Spangler before he died, but she won't tell us why. There's also Agent Z, who was tailing Spangler and seems relieved that someone else took care of him."
"Adalet, here you are! I've got something big, you gotta see this!" Hannah declares, stopping in front of the cops' desks.
"What's with all the noise, kid? Deliver the facts already!" he ordered.
"I know where Spangler's alien is hiding!" she announced, "I found encrypted footage on the video camera you found near Spangler's body! In it, Spangler says the alien he's protecting is hiding in a cave!"
"More nonsense from this old man!" he cried, throwing his hands in the air, "this alien gig is starting to get old!"
"But no matter how crazy Spangler sounds in this video, that cave is a solid lead to follow to solve his murder!" Adalet insisted, "Hannah, do you have the location for that cave?"
"I've sent the cave coordinates to your tablet," Hannah answered, "and I suggest you wear the right equipment because you don't go caving in a Hawaiian shirt, Frank!"
"Okay, you got me," Frank grunts, standing up, "let's gear up and go explore that cave!"
After grabbing some spelunking gear, the two headed out to the hidden cave Hannah had discovered. Adalet needed to help Frank get situated in his gear, but after a quick lesson in repelling, they began descending into the cave.
Luckily the sun could still shine into the cave from some cracks in the stone, so it wasn't too dark yet. Looking around the sandy space, Adalet found a broken item that was unidentifiable, a pile of rocks to perfectly stack to have been made naturally, and a drawing that was slightly faded from being in direct sunlight.
"I gotta say, Adalet, crawling through there was a real pain but the juice was worth the squeeze. This cave is amazing!" Frank remarks, adjusting his helmet, "nice catch, this broken item looks promising. You think you can fix it?"
Adalet grabs her glue, "it was broken into some rather large pieces, so just give me a minute..."
"This pile of rocks is way less inspiring, though... Don't expect me to search through it, I'll leave that to you!" he says, "the same goes for this faded drawing, I don't care if it reads "Leave that orb", don't expect me to retrieve the rest of the message for you!"
"Can you at least hold this for me?" she smirked, holding the cube-shaped artifact she restored.
"Amazing, Adalet!" he said, taking the cube, "this strange device you restored looks like it was taken from a sci-fi movie! But we're far from Ivywood, aren't we? Let's send it to Hannah!"
With Frank holding the cube, Adalet began moving the stones out of the pile to see what was hidden underneath. Under the rocks, she found a blueprint for how to make a Molotov cocktail!
"Is this a guide to... making Molotov cocktails?" Adalet blinks, examining the instructions.
"Still on the right track, Adalet! Since we know our killer used a Molotov cocktail to off Spangler, it's likely they read this guide to prepare!" Frank reasons.
"There's a strange mark on the document," she notes, swabbing the pink stain on the paper, "we should send it to Yann!"
Placing the sample into her case, Adalet grabbed her dusting kit before moving on to the faded paper she'd found. She dusted the faded half of the paper and recovered a sketch of Colonel Spangler with a slashed circle above him. There had also been a message written, and it was signed by one of their suspects.
"Good work, Adalet! So, what was written on that paper?" Frank inquired.
"Leave that orb, army not welcome", and it was signed by Ezra," Adalet answered.
"Wait, is that drawing supposed to be Spangler? He looks even more dumb than the real one!" he teases but his laughter faded at the glare he received, "sorry, Adalet... It means that Ezra didn't want Spangler to come to this cave!"
"Then let's go ask Ezra about this threat!"
Leaving the cave with their clues in hand, they dropped the samples off at the labs before returning to the festival grounds to ask Ezra about his threat against the victim.
"Say, Ezra, Adalet found your little drawing. Threatening a Colonel? Doesn't sound very peaceful to me!" Frank remarked.
"Woah, easy there dude, Spangler and I had a beef going on about the cave alright, but this drawing I made is nothing to get upset about!" Ezra assured, pulling out a cigarette, "that cave has ancient mystical powers, it's a gateway to alien civilizations! You bet I wanted to keep it safe from the military, they turn everything into a weapon!"
