《Killer Bay》Crystal Death

"Hey Adalet," the captain looked up to see Frank enter the office, missing his shirt and towel drying his hair, "is it me, or is it too hot out here in Rhine Canyon? I had to dip in the pool so I wouldn't sweat to death!"
"Wait, we have a pool?!" Adalet exclaimed, "why am I just now finding out about it?! Also, I think you're forgetting something..."
Frank grins, "what, are you going to go tattle on me for not wearing a shirt in the office?"
"Adalet!" Andrea calls as she rushes out of her office, "quick, there's been a train crash!"
Adalet's eyes widened, "Woah! How did that happen?!"
"A truck was abandoned on the tracks, causing a train to derail! The vehicle was blown to smithereens!" she answered, "luckily it was a freight train so no reported casualties. But I still want you and Frank to go secure the scene!"
"We're on it, Andrea!" Frank salutes happily.
Andrea did a double-take when she saw the detective's state of dress or undress in this case, "Frank! Where's your uniform?"
"Err..." he pulls a fresh shirt from his desk drawer, "I was just about to put it on."
"Need I remind you about work dress code?" she glared, "now get to the train wreck site immediately and find out why that truck was on those tracks!"
Frank whistled as they surveyed the scene, "jeez! What a train wreck! There's enough to get hot and bothered about without me having my shirt off!"
Adalet covered her mouth to muffle the choked laugh she made hearing his remark.
He chuckled nervously, "this one goes without saying... Let's dig around, but make it quick before I get all sweaty and scratchy again!"
They split up and went in opposite directions of the crash. Frank walked along the length of the train while Adalet and Hunter climbed over the fallen cargo car to get a better look at the mess on the tracks. Adalet approached the raised tracks and noticed a broken sign had fallen from one of the support beams, and a car door that must have flown off the transport truck that had caused the crash.
While she gathered up the two items, Hunter began barking up a storm and the captain looked over to see what had caught the dog's attention. Rammed onto a wooden stack was a severed human head, blood dripping from the neck onto the ground and spattered on the top of the head from where the spike was poking out of.
"Frank!" Adalet yells, "you might want to get over here!"
Frank grunted as he climbed over the cargo car, "ay, caramba, Adalet! You found a head on a pole? What a grotesque murder! This guy's been beheaded! Where's the body?! I don't want to touch that head, you can send it off to Roxie!"
Adalet looked around, "no body, Hunter doesn't smell it! But these clues might help us find it!"
"Looks like you found a truck door! Seems to be the only thing left of the abandoned truck after the train crashed into it," he says, having been unable to find the vehicle.
"Well, the door has some kind of a faded image on it," she remarked.
"Why is that interesting?" he questioned before slapping his forehead, "oh, I get it. This door could tell us who the truck belonged to! Maybe they were involved in the murder too... And you also picked up some broken sign, Adalet? Well, what the heck, might as well restore it while you're at it!"

While Frank called Roxie about the head, Adalet repaired the broken sign she had found. After gluing it back together, she saw that it was a warning sign ordering people to keep out. But someone had written a message over it in Spanish in what looked to be blood.
"Think you're amazing, restoring that sign from the train wreck so quickly, Adalet? It's nothing but a "keep out" sign"," Frank snorted.
Adalet turned it around for him to see better, "do most keep out signs also come with messages written in blood?"
"Whoa, you're right!" he exclaims, "it says: "estás Muerto"... Yikes! Let's get it to Russell, he loves creepy stuff like this!"
Placing the sign aside, Adalet moved on to the car door. She ended up using quite a bit of powder to recover the missing logo, but it was worth it once it was repaired.
"That logo sure looks familiar... Makes me hungry for some reason..." Frank comments.
"Is it from a restaurant or something?" Adalet wondered.
"It might be..." he thought for a minute, "yeah, I think it's Tacos Niños?"
"Is that a taco joint?" she questioned.
He nods, "I've eaten there before. Their slogan is something like "fresh from across the border" since all their ingredients are delivered fresh. But I like it because it's cheap."
"Well if they deliver across the border, then that means the abandoned truck on the tracks was a Tacos Niños delivery truck," she reasons.
"But where did the driver go? Maybe he saw the victim's head and ran away?" he suggests.
"Our best bet would be to speak to the Tacos Niños franchise owner," Adalet did a quick search on her phone, "it says here that it's a Mr. Gustavo Salamanca."
"Alright then, let's go ask Gustavo Salamanca if he knows who was driving that truck!"
After Roxie arrived to take the head, Adalet and Frank drove out to the Tacos Niños restaurant that was Gustavo's main office and base of operations. After introducing themselves to the sombrero-wearing man, the CEO smiles.
"Captain, I'm glad you happened to stop by. One of my company's delivery drivers and his truck have gone missing," Gustavo informed them.
"Oh really? Well, we're here to tell you one of your trucks was demolished on the train tracks this morning," Adalet replied, nodding to Frank who pulled out a close-up picture of the head they found, "any chance you recognize this man? He was found murdered right by the accident."
He examined the picture, "yes! That's my driver, Manny Sanchez! Why was his truck on the train tracks? Where's the truck now?"
"I'm sorry Mr. Salamanca," Frank says, putting the picture away, "but it was completely demolished in the train wreck. We still have the door..."
"But Manny's route is through border control to bring back ingredients to make our fresh tacos. He should never have been on the tracks in the first place!" Gustavo frowns in confusion, "that idiot! Now I've lost a driver, a truck and a ton of ingredients! Think of the costs! Excuse me, officers, I need to think this one through."
"Well, turns out my idea of going to talk to Gustavo Salamanca was a huge breakthrough!" Frank brags as Gustavo leaves, "let me put the puzzle pieces together! So he identified our victim as Manny Sanchez. He was a Taco Niños delivery truck driver, but Mr. Salamanca didn't seem to have any idea why the victim would be near the train tracks."

"Mr. Salamanca did mention that the victim Manny Sanchez normally drives through border control, not over the train tracks," Adalet added, "so something might have happened to change his route..."
He nods in agreement, "I guess this means we should investigate the border control station!"
After driving out to the Mexico/American border, Frank and Adalet searched it for any signs of their victim being there. Adalet managed to find a border control sheet bearing the victim's name in the cab of the border control truck, while Hunter and Frank stumbled across a box filled with car supplies.
"What did you manage to scrummage up here?" Frank asked as he carried the crate over, "a border control sheet with our victim's name on it? Well go on, reveal the rest of the information!"
"And that box of car supplies, let me guess," Adalet smirked, "you to want me to dig through it?"
He chuckled, "well, don't look at me, get digging!"
Frank set the crate down and Adalet kneeled beside it to dig through the supplies. There were car batteries, jumper cables, hoses, and gas cans inside the crate, but there was one thing inside the crate that obviously was not used in fixing cars. A colourful lama-shaped piñata.
"Not too shabby, Adalet, you found a piñata in that car kit... Can I smash it open? Please?!" Frank begged.
Adalet holds the piñata in a protective hold, "no, its evidence!"
"Fine I won't... yet. This piñata must be from our victim, the tag reads "Love, Manny."," he points to the tag, "the name "Rose" is written on the piñata... maybe it's for his lover?"
"If I let you make guesses, we'll be here all day," she teases.
He holds his hands up in surrender, "if you don't like my guesses then send it to Hannah!"
Placing the piñata beside Hunter for her to guard, Adalet grabs the faded paper she found. She dusted the faded box beside Manny's name and recovered the name of the patrol officer who signed the paperwork.
"Nice job uncovering the rest of the text on that border control sheet, Adalet! Now we know who let our victim through border control," Frank says, taking the paper, "a man named Timothy Chubbles was the one to let him through... Maybe he knew the victim. Let's talk to him!"
After putting the piñata in the back of their hummer, Adalet and Frank walked over to the border office to find Timothy Chubbles. They found the officer just as he was leaving the office to begin his patrol, and stopped him before he could walk away.
"Howdy, officers! It's mighty fine to chat with fellow protectors of Pacific Bay! What can I do you for?" Timothy asked.
"Mr. Chubbles, we have some questions about a man named Manny Sanchez that you let through the border," Adalet said, showing him the paperwork.
"Hmm, we've got folks the world over coming through daily..." he hummed, trying to remember the man.
"He would have come through in a Tacos Niños truck," Frank chimed in helpfully.
"Oh, right! Taco guy! A real nice fella! He always says hello," Timothy tells them.
"Did he ever do anything suspicious?" he questioned.
"No... But I'll let him know next time he comes through that you stopped by."
"Actually Mr. Chubbles," Adalet cut in, "Manny Sanchez was found murdered this morning."
Timothy gasped, "he's dead? Well, that's a gosh darn pity. He'll be in my prayers tonight! Good luck finding the criminal, Capt. Adalet!"
"Whoa, this murder investigation looks like it's going to be a tricky one, but don't lose your head over it... our victim's already done that!" Roxie laughs.
"Roxie," Frank rubs his temples, "sometimes your humour makes me want to barf."
"Well, don't make a mess in here! So, it appears that your victim's head was hacked off with a sharp blade, though you'll have to find the weapon to be sure," she explained, "but where's the body, Adalet? Or did you just bring me the head as some kind of challenge?"
"That's all we found, Roxie, the head jammed onto a post..." Adalet responded truthfully, "at least tell us you've found something on it."
"You're lucky I'm good at my job. I examined the puncture point in his neck, where the head was pushed onto the pole. I managed to find traces of one of our common interests, Frank... Tequila!" Roxie beamed, "and not in the victim's throat but on the pole, meaning-"
"Meaning, let's take a shot to our new piece of evidence... The killer drinks tequila!" Frank finished.
Adalet chuckled as she began making the profile, "you two can go celebrate later..."
"Well will," Frank promised, "but moving on, what can you tell us about the sign Adalet found that won't bore us to death, Russell?"
"Aren't you fresh, Frank! Well, the message is written in blood that matches your victim, undoubtedly by the killer," Russell starts, "the sign reads "estás Muerto," which is Spanish for "You are dead." Basically, the killer wrote a death threat in Spanish!"
"Wait, Russell, you mean to tell me that we waited all this time to learn that the sign was written in Spanish?! A simple dictionary would have sufficed!" he complained.
The profiler winked, "well no one's stopped you from using a dictionary, Frank!"
"Don't get smart with me, blondie. Adalet and I are working all day while you're sitting around on your-"
"Alright, enough!" Adalet yells, stepping between the two and holding her arms out, "Frank, stop bickering with Russell! And Russell, stop setting him off!"
"What, Adalet? I'm not bickering!" Frank denies, "I'm just saying, if we've got a Spanish-speaking killer on the loose, then Russell better step up to help find them!"
She rolls her eyes, "sure..."
Hannah cleared her throat to get everyone's attention, "Adalet, did you send me this piñata so that Frank could eat the candy inside? Well, what I found in there is way better than candy!"
"What's better than candy? Scotch?" Frank hummed wishfully.
She snorted, "nope. Money! And lots of it! Close to ten thousand dollars!"
"Ten thousand dollars!" Adalet's eyes bulged.
"How the heck did Manny, a truck driver, get that kind of money, and why put it in a piñata?" Frank wondered.
"Tell me about it. Considering the name "Rosa" written on the piñata, I ran the name and found a Rosa Sanchez who is a chemistry teacher here in Rhine Canyon," Hannah reported, handing Adalet a printout of the woman's information.
"Hmm, same last name..." Frank remarks, "good chance they're related. Alright, Adalet, we better talk to this Rosa!"
They called Rosa into the station and brought the teacher to their interrogation room to see what she knew about the victim and him addressing a piñata full of money to her.
"Ms. Sanchez," Frank greets the woman, "we're investigating the death of a man named Manny Sanchez and we need some answers. Do you know anythi-"
"What? Manny is dead?!" Rosa cries, cutting the detective off, "he was my brother! Mi Hermano! Dios mío!"
"Oh..." Adalet whispered, "we are so sorry for your loss. We are hoping you can help us, can you explain the money in the piñata he meant to give you?"
"He always sent money to support me," she sniffled, "when I first moved to Pacific Bay, I had nothing. I was a poor teacher, a single mother, but Manny helped me settle down comfortably."
"Ten thousand dollars is a lot. How does a delivery guy make that kind of money?" Frank inquiries.
"He told me not to ask, so I didn't!" Rosa answered, biting her nails, "he said he'd worry about the money and I should just be grateful. Which I was! But now I've lost him! My guardian angel! Mi Hermano! What will I do now?"
"Well Adalet, feels like we're in over our heads with this case... though at least we've got our heads, unlike our victim!" Frank joked, "it was Manny's truck that caused the train wreck, but how does that connect with his beheading? And his missing body?"
Adalet shrugs, "unfortunately, we don't know. And we barely know anything about our victim, other than he supported his sister Rosa with suspicious amounts of money."
"And his employer Gustavo Salamanca seems upset about Manny's death, though almost more concerned about the destroyed truck," he grumbled.
"Adalet! Have I got BIG news for you!" Hannah announces, entering the office.
Adalet smiles, "well don't keep us in suspense, tell us!"
"I researched your victim Manny Sanchez, and I managed to find property in his name way out in the boonies. So I dug deeper and discovered something about your victim..." she paused for dramatic effect, "Manny Sanchez was manufacturing drugs! The victim's property was a meth lab, a drug laboratory that produces highly addictive and dangerous methamphetamines."
Frank spat out his coffee, "WHAT? Our victim made drugs? So he wasn't just a delivery truck driver! Things just got a whole lot crazier. Come on, Adalet put on a mask and let's get over to that meth lab!"
"Hfao alkjdkfl..." Frank mumbled through the gas mask he was wearing.
"Frank, I have no idea what you're saying," Adalet complained, "you don't need to wear the mask, the air was tested and deemed safe to breathe!"
"Well, we'll see who's the idiot when you get poisoned!" Frank vowed after removing his mask, "but holy guacamole, Adalet! You found a headless body in the meth lab! Is this the body of our victim, Manny Sanchez?"
"If it isn't, then I'm not sure I want to know whose it is!" she replies, "but looking at it, we better get it to the lab before it falls apart!"
"I'm afraid to know what else you found. Some torn paper seems harmless, though we'll see for sure once you restore it!" he adds, "and that lab equipment box... I'd rather not get my hands dirty, but go ahead and sieve through it, Adalet!"
Adalet carefully tipped the crate of lab equipment on its side and began pulling the items out. After pulling out several beakers, vials, flasks, and gloves, she pulled out a brown bag labelled TOXIC with the biohazard symbol above it.
"Well, where's your mask, Adalet? This bag of chemicals you found inside that lab equipment box could be dangerous!" Frank reasons.
Adalet checked the bag, "it's perfectly sealed, pretty much airtight!"
"What's that weird red symbol on it?" he wonders.
"I'm not sure, but Hannah can find out for us!" she answers.
Putting the bag down, Adalet picked up the torn paper next. After taping the paper back together, they saw that it was a copy of the periodic table of the elements. Additionally, someone had written their name in the top left-hand corner, Tiffany Dunn.
"Way to work quickly, Adalet. You've restored... a periodic table of elements? Haven't seen one of those since my high school chemistry class... which I slept through!" Frank laughs at the memory.
"Well someone wrote their name on this one, Tiffany Dunn is scribbled on the paper," Adalet reads, "and if it's in the lab, then she probably knows the victim."
He nods, "let's have a chat with this Tiffany Dunn!"
After sending Manny's body and the bag of chemicals to the lab, Adalet and Frank tracked down Tiffany to an alleyway she frequents. The young woman had clearly been taking drugs for a while given the haggard look she had and the nervous stitching she was constantly doing.
"What? Manny's dead? How come nobody tells me nothin' around here!" Tiffany cries after being informed of the murder.
"Ms. Dunn, we found your name on a periodic table in Manny's meth lab. You were involved in his drug operation, weren't you!" Frank demanded to know.
"Drugs? I don't know nothin' about that..." she mumbles, biting on her nails.
"Drop the act, Ms. Dunn," he ordered, "unless you prefer to talk to us in jail!
"... Okay, fine. Manny made crystal, and I bought it. No problem. But then he started raising the prices so even I, his best customer, couldn't afford it no more! I told him he was being a jerk, and guess what he did? He offered me a job, to help him cook his crystal! You know, pour chemicals, weigh it, bag it. Nothin' bad!" she explains, "he tried teaching me that science stuff, but I didn't really care as long as I got what I needed. But I don't gotta tell you cops nothin', I got bigger problems now that I got no more crystal!"
"Glad you're not going about this case like a headless chicken, Adalet! Speaking of headless-"
"Enough with the headless jokes, Roxie!" Frank ordered.
