《Killer Bay》Dead Carpet

"Adalet, tonight's the night! It's the Ivywood Film Awards ceremony!" Roxie proclaimed excitedly.
"You can give me an award for being the best-dressed police officer!" Frank laughed pulling on the collar of his Hawaiian shirt, "a bottle of Gold Stag would make a nice prize!"
"We don't have time to gossip about the Ivywood Awards!" Adalet reminded him.
"Listen to Adalet," Amy ordered, "we know the Utopians have planned something for Awards night: they've made a film to brainwash the entire population of Ivywood!"
"That was when the Utopians still had a leader. But now Holly Hopper's dead, surely we have nothing to fear?" Frank reasoned.
"Leaderless or not, the Utopians are still dangerous! Remember what they've done to Andrea? She's still on sick leave!" Russell chimed in.
"What do you propose we do, then?" he asked.
"Well, we know what Andrea would want us to do!" Adalet mused.
"Adalet's right: if Andrea were here, she'd tell us to check the Awards Theater for suspicious activity!" Amy agreed, planting her hands on her hips just like the Chief does.
Frank whistled, "holy booze, it's Amy's therapist who deserves an award! I've never seen the kid so confident! She's bossing us around like she's the new chief!"
"I heard that Frank!" she said pointing her finger at him, "Adalet, I'll go walk the red carpet with you, you need a serious partner tonight!"
"We were right to be suspicious, Adalet! This man is dead, without a doubt! It looks like he suffocated..." Amy remarked as she glanced over the body.
"I know him," Adalet says as she recognized the face, "his name is Tyler Snakes, he's a famous Ivywood producer..."
"Oh, I've read about him! Tyler Snakes was in charge of organizing the Awards ceremony!" she remembered.
"So what are the chances he would drop dead on Awards night?" she wondered.
"Agreed, Adalet, we're dealing with another murder here!" she announced, "the Awards organizer is killed before the ceremony, right when the Utopians were planning to brainwash the population... Could the two events be linked?"
"I won't doubt it," Adalet responded, "the Utopians could still be planning to brainwash people! And maybe they didn't hesitate to kill one of their own members in the process!"
"Let's have a look at the clues you found. The movie posters in that envelope must be tonight's Award winners, we should have a look inside!" Amy said, "and what about this picture? Hey, isn't that Velma Bannister? The actress who tried to seduce Frank?! This woman has shown she cannot be trusted... Do you think you could retrieve the faded message on this photo, Adalet?"
Adalet nodded as she got to work. She picked up the envelope first and noticed that it was stuffed full of different movie posters, some for the movies that had been involved in previous investigations. After sifting through the posters she found a piece of paper that stuck out as different from the movie posters. It was a map of the awards theatre, with a few annotations added onto the page.
"Is this a map of the Awards Theater? What was it doing in that envelope?" Amy wanderers.
"We may never know," Adalet answered, "but look, there's the Utopian symbol on it! And it's pointing to the TV room; it must be where they film and broadcast the Awards. And if this is the case, then the Utopians would need that room to broadcast their brainwashing movie!"

"There's not a second to lose, Adalet: let's investigate that TV room immediately!" she decided.
Unfortunately, that investigation would have to wait a little longer. They still needed to examine the photo of Velma Bannister they had found near the body. Adalet dusted the faded writing along the top of the page and recovered the message.
"And the award for the fastest reveal goes to Adalet!" Amy praised with a wink, "the message on Velma's photo says "Tyler, I want to walk the red carpet with you."
"We know Velma Bannister flirts to get whatever she wants. She likely tried to draw Tyler Snakes under her spell, too," Adalet mused, "therefore, we must ask Velma what went on between her and the victim!"
On their way to the TV room, they managed to come across Velma among the crowd of award show attendees. They took her off to the side so as to have a more private conversation, away from the listening ears of nosy reporters.
"Tyler Snakes dropped dead on the red carpet? How dramatic! That's how real men die!" Velma exclaimed dramatically.
"Mrs. Bannister, you may have fooled Frank, but you can't fool us! We know you were flirting with the victim," Amy told her, showing the picture as proof.
"Sure, I admired Tyler. He was powerful and charismatic. Who could resist him?" she asked.
"And now he's dead. You don't sound very upset," Adalet deadpanned.
"Honey, it's better to have loved and lost than having to train another man not to leave the toilet seat up. I already have a husband for that kind of thing," Velma smirked, taking a puff from her cigarette, "my heart bleeds for Tyler, but the Ivywood Awards are announced tonight, and I have to rehearse my acceptance speech. Maybe you'll get a mention in it, Capt. Adalet..."
Adalet and Amy left Velma and continued onto the TV room. Once inside the high-tech room, they began to search it for any possible clues that could help in their investigation. They located the surveillance terminal for all of the CCTV cameras in and around the theatre, along with some torn paper on the desk. They also discovered Tyler's ID badge hanging from one of the monitors.
"So this is the TV control room, where the Awards will be broadcast. The Utopians must have wanted access to air their own brainwashing movie!" Amy theorizes, "there's no sign of a Utopian movie... But you've found our victim's access badge!
"The killer must have taken the badge from Tyler's body to access the TV room! We need to send this badge to the lab immediately!" Adalet decided, "and this is the CCTV control unit."
"Isn't that where they store the security camera data?" she questioned, Adalet nodded in confirmation, "they may have recorded the murder! Can you crack the security code so we can access it?"
"Shouldn't be a problem," Adalet replied, examining the lock.
"As for that torn poster... I know you'll fix it in a flash, Adalet!" Amy beamed.
Adalet examined the lock of the CCTV terminal closely. It has a simple keypad that only takes a couple of tries to figure out the passcode for it. She opened the doors and they could now see inner mechanics of the device.
"Adalet, you've unlocked the security camera terminal! Let's send it to Hannah so she can retrieve the footage from the crime scene!" Amy says as they disconnected the terminal from the wall outlet.
Next, Adalet picks up the torn pieces of paper. In no time at all, she had taped them back together. It turned out to be a promotional poster for the Utopians, with a smiling man displayed front and center under the heading.

"Adalet, the poster you restored is a Utopian poster! It says "The Utopian Prophecy is fulfilled tonight!" Amy reads out loud with a frown, "a prophecy? Could they be talking about their plan to brainwash everyone in Ivywood tonight?
"It would make sense," Adalet agreed, "but we should question the man on the poster!"
"Isn't that Brett Nolan the Utopian actor you met on that Western movie set?" she asked.
"Your right, it is!" she remarked, recognizing the man without the cowboy getup.
"Glad I got it right! Let's ask Brett about this Utopian prophecy, Adalet!"
They tracked down the actor among the gathered attendees and brought him to a secluded area to talk.
"Mr. Nolan, we found this Utopian poster with your face on it, which mentions a "prophecy." Care to explain?" Adalet asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Oh, I... don't know much about it, Capt. Adalet. The Utopians like to use my pretty face, but they never tell me anything important," Brett explained.
"Don't play dumb, Nolan," she advised, "you've been a Utopian for years, you must know about this prophecy!"
He began to sweat slightly, "well, it's... something about the Guiding Light leading the departed souls back to Earth, or something. I never really understood it."
"The prophecy doesn't talk about sacrificing the organizer of the Awards ceremony on the red carpet, by any chance?" Amy questioned.
Brett gasped in shock, "Tyler Snakes is dead!? See, they never tell me anything! They wouldn't warn me if the world was ending tonight!"
"Guys, this murder makes me feel like I'm in a movie!" Roxie commented with clear excitement.
"A disaster movie," Amy corrected, "unless we stop the Utopians in time! Have you found anything useful on the body?"
"Yes! Tyler Snakes was killed exactly like a character in a famous movie: A Puff of Death!" she explained.
"What do you mean, Roxie? The killer copied the murder from a movie?" Adalet inquired.
"Exactly! In the movie, the victim dies from inhaling monomethyl para-amino-sulphate: a highly toxic chemical. It is mixed in his tobacco, and he smokes it," Roxie reached over with her gloved hands to hold up the victim's lungs, "I've found the same poison in Snakes' lungs, mixed with regular cigarette smoke residue!"
Amy gagged slightly, "so he was killed with a poisoned cigarette? That's insane! Who'd think that up?"
She puts the lungs down, "someone who's seen it in A Puff of Death! Adalet, I guarantee your killer has seen that movie!"
After thanking Roxie and making a note of the info on their killer's profile, Adalet and Amy moved onto Yann's lab.
"Hello, Adalet. I've examined the victim's badge you found in the TV room and found a molecule left behind by the killer..." Yann tells them as he placed his coffee mug down on his table looking nervous, "but before I could identify this molecule, my wife called and... This is embarrassing. Look, Adalet, I'm really sorry, but my daughter got sick and my wife needed me to take her to the doctor."
"So you didn't have time to identify the molecule the killer left on our victim's badge?" Adalet inferred with a gentle smile.
"Don't fret about it, Yann. We both know Adalet can identify this molecule in the database in a flash! Can't you, Adalet?" Amy says.
The captain dropped into the empty computer chair, "already on it..."
Yann helped Adalet to find the correct database in order to compare the molecule he had found with the ones that had on file. After a few minutes of comparing and debating sections of their molecule, they had discovered a match along with an identity for the unknown molecule.
"Adalet, you've identified the molecule the killer left on the victim's badge: it's Nevrax, an antidepressant!" Amy says as she wrote down the name, "so our killer takes Nevrax... Maybe they're depressed because they know you'll catch them, Adalet!"
With that done, Adalet and Amy crossed the hall to Hannah's office to see if she had gotten something from the CCTV terminal.
"Adalet, I hope you solve this case before the Awards ceremony starts, I want to know the winners!" Hannah said as they entered the room.
"Then hurry up and tell us what you found on the CCTV terminal! Did any of the cameras record the murder?" Amy inquired impatiently.
"No, the footage only shows Tyler suddenly collapsing, all alone. But a few minutes before, something interesting happened on the red carpet..." she pulled up a short clip on the monitor, "grab some popcorn and make yourself comfortable, Adalet! I'll play the tape!"
"Hey... The poor guy thrown out of the red carpet is Russell's dad!" Amy remarked.
"Isn't that the best plot twist ever?!" Hannah laughed.
"Hannah, it's not funny!" she scolded.
"If Jupiter Crane was at the Awards Theater around the time of the murder, we have to question him!" Adalet decided, already going to call the man into the station.
Once Russell's father had arrived, Adalet and Amy ushered him into an interrogation room to confront him about being kicked out of the Awards Theater.
"Mr. Crane, we have proof you were kicked out of the Awards Theater right before Tyler Snakes was killed. What were you doing there?" Adalet questioned.
"I was trying to speak to Mr. Snakes about the future of the Utopians! After our great leader's demise, Snakes fancied himself the new leader. But he had lost sight of his Guiding Light!" Jupiter told them, "Snakes only used our religion to rub shoulders with rich investors. He was giving all Utopians a bad name!"
"So you illegally entered the premises to harass Snakes? Or did you decide to kill him to protect your religion?" Amy asked.
"My conscience is clear," he proclaimed, "it's the Guiding Light that punished Tyler Snakes, not me!"
"Tonight was meant to be about the excitement of the Ivywood Awards, but instead we're dealing with Utopians again... and a dead man!" Amy cried, "Tyler Snakes was going to supervise the Awards ceremony, but someone poisoned him on the red carpet."
"We've found proof that Velma Bannister tried to seduce him, but we don't know how that played out," Adalet continued, "as for Russell's dad, he got kicked out of the Awards Theater for harassing the victim..."
She chewed at her nails, "and there's this prophecy, too. I agree it must have something to do with the Utopians' plan to brainwash ever-"
"Adalet! The Prophecy has started! The Guiding Light is shining on us! The end is nigh!" Hannah shouted as she skidded to a stop in front of them.
Amy gasped, "Hannah?! Have you joined the Utopians, too?!"
"Of course not! I've just hacked their servers. The Utopians are saying the Guiding Light has visited their temple! And that a new world starts tonight!" she clarified, "Adalet, you must check out this Utopian temple to learn more about the prophecy, and how it's linked to the brainwashing plan!"
"Going to the Utopian temple? But what if we get brainwashed?!" she worried.
"We must face the danger, Amy," Adalet spoke up, "if we want to foil the Utopians' plot, and find out which one of them killed Tyler Snakes. So let's get to the temple!"
"So this is the Utopian temple. I expected a crowd," Amy admitted as they looked around the impressive space, "but it's empty! I wonder where they've gone... Did you find anything, Adalet?"
"A shrine," Adalet reported, "and it has our victim in the picture!"
"I agree, we should search through it!" she responds, "and you've found a torn photograph, too! We haven't come to this temple in vain, after all! Quick, Adalet, let's put it back together."
"Check this out, Amy," she said, showing her partner the box she had discovered, "it's Nevrax! We know the killer takes Nevrax, so this box of medication could make or break the case!"
"There's a doctor's ID on the box, but it's illegible. Can you decipher it? Please hurry, we're on the enemy's territory!" she gulped.
Adalet examined the doctor's ID on the box of Nevrax first. She deciphered the missing pieces of the ID and wrote it down on a sticky note, then attached it to the front of the box.
"Perfect! Now that you've deciphered the doctor's ID on the Nevrax box, we can get it to Hannah!" Amy grins, taking the box.
With Amy now holding the box, Adalet was free to move onto the shrine. She began looking through all of the items that had been placed before the picture of the victim, and soon she discovered a card that did not seem to be written with Tyler in the best light.
"Adalet, you found a card in the shrine, addressed to the victim! It says: "Tyler, you're finished: my victory is written in the stars!" Amy gasped, "Adalet, it sounds like a threat! Possibly from the killer!"
"We need to find out who wrote it," Adalet declared, "can you get this card to Russell? Hopefully, he can read between the lines!"
"I'm on it!" she promised with a salute.
Lastly, there was a torn photo that needed repairing, and it didn't take Adalet long to do so. In the picture, which looked to be taken in front of the Awards Theater, it could clearly be seen that Tyler Snakes and Brett Nolan were engaged in a heated argument with each other.
"So the photograph you found in the Utopian temple shows two men arguing on the red carpet..." Amy muses.
"The one on the left is obviously the victim!" Adalet pointed out, "and the other man looks like Brett Nolan!"
"And he's really angry with the victim!" she commented.
"Which is exactly why we should talk to Brett about this," she replies.
As they drove back to the station, Amy called Brett in to meet them there. Once they arrived, Adalet brought Brett into an interrogation room while the blonde woman sent the evidence to their respected labs.
"Mr. Nolan," Adalet greeted, "we found this photo of you and Tyler Snakes arguing on the crime scene! What were you fighting about?"
"Snakes never liked my acting. He said I should learn from Dick Shakespeare in A Puff of Death. I watched that film twenty times, but I still don't get it!" Brett complained, "but then he started criticizing that poster you found, saying I had no charisma! That the Utopians needed a new face!"
"So Snakes mocked both your acting career and your position among the Utopians?" she deduced.
"Exactly! He criticized everything I did, Capt. Adalet! It was causing me severe anxiety. Not even Nexrax helped!" he cried.
"Adalet, this card you found in the Utopian temple made me see the light! The stars! The constellations! It's all written in the stars!" Russell exclaimed in delight.
"The stars?" Amy gulped, "Russell, you don't mean the... Guiding Light, right? You haven't gone back to being a Utopian?"
"I'd never go back to the Utopians, Amy! I'm talking about the card: "my victory is written in the stars." It's this week's horoscope for Capricorns!" he explained, "furthermore, look at these little red dots on the card, Adalet. If you draw a line between them, it shows the Capricorn constellation!"
"Of course!" Adalet slapped her forehead, wondering how she could have missed it, "so whoever wrote this threat and left it in the victim's shrine is a Capricorn?"
"Yes," Russell confirmed, "and I'm positive it's the killer! Capricorns avoid direct conflict: just think about how your victim was killed! Poisoned, without any direct contact by the killer..."
"Which means that Tyler's killer is a Capricorn!" Adalet concluded.
"One more thing, Adalet: put my father right at the top of your suspect list. He was born on the 30th of December!" he tells them.
