《Killer Bay》Wild Wild Death

"Hey there, Adalet! Remember Horace Foster from our last case? The movie producer we suspected of killing that Glass Princess actress?" Frank asks.
Adalet looked away from her computer screen, "of course, what about him, Frank?"
"He gave us passes to Abitbol & Sons Studios to see how a movie is made! His latest production is a Western, "The Ornery Die Last"!" he explained showing her the matching lanyard passes, "I really love Westerns! I grew up on them! The world is so simple in that type of movie. You know who the good guys are and who the bad guys are... So what do you say, Adalet? Ready to head into the Wild West?"
"Definitely!" she smiled grabbing one of the passes.
"I cannot believe this! Horace Foster has been dismembered!" Frank exclaimed as they stood before the body, or body parts to be more precise, "who could have done this to him? Roxie's gonna have a field day with this..."
"No kidding," Adalet says as she kneeled beside the victim's head, "she'll be telling this story for years!"
"At least you found the victim's briefcase, there's "Horace" written on it. Go ahead, I know you're just dying to dig in!" he smirked picking up the other clue they found, "but what's with this torn up photo? Was it used in the movie or something? You'll piece it back together as always, I'm sure. There goes our chance at showbiz, huh? Back to the dirtbag world of murder..."
While they waited for Roxie to arrive and take the body sway, Adalet opened the victim's briefcase. Inside she found an assortment of files, paperwork, stationery, and portfolios relating to the production of Horace's new movie. But hidden within all of the supplies she found a set of four playing cards; 8 of spades, 8 of clubs, Ace of clubs, and the Ace of spades.
"Alright, so you found a bunch of playing cards in the victim's briefcase. I'm not sure what you're trying to prove with this, Adalet. That our victim was a player?" Frank theorized.
Adalet shook her head, "I don't think so, if that was the case then this would be a full deck, not just four cards."
"You think these cards didn't belong to the victim? Honestly, sometimes I think you're just bluffing," he teased.
"So you don't think that we should send these to Russell?" she argued.
"Alright, alright!" he gave in, "we'll send these cards to "Boy Wonder" Russell and see what he says!"
With the cards set aside for Russell, Adalet picked up the torn paper. She quickly taped together the photo and discovered that it was of a woman who was clearly a wrestler if her muscular build and clothing were anything to go by. The card was signed by the woman in the picture, and it was addressed to the victim.
"You're outdoing yourself already, Adalet!" Frank praised, "c'mon don't you know who the woman in this picture is?! She's a Mexican wrestler -- that's why she has the mask! Luz Lucha is also known as La Calavera. That's Spanish for skull... Her aerial wrestling style is amazing!"
Adalet blinked, "you sure know a lot about wrestling, Frank!"
"So I watch a little wrestling now and again! It's not a crime! I love wrestling and Luz Lucha in particular..." he mumbles, "anyway! Back to the photo! Well spotted, Adalet! It looks like an autograph to Horace Foster! Luz Lucha called him her "biggest fan". Horace probably was her biggest fan... literally!"

"We here to solve Horace's murder, not criticize his weight!" she reminded.
"Sorry, Adalet!" he apologized, "I'll get my head in the game. If Ms. Lucha knew our victim, we need to talk to her."
They called Luz Lucha into the station so that they could ask her about her autograph to the victim. Once Roxie had collected the body, they all returned to the station. Adalet and Frank dropped off their other evidence that needed analysis, before heading into the interrogation to meet their first suspect.
"Hey, handsome! Want me to sign something for you?" Luz asks winking at Frank.
"With pleasure, Ms. Lucha! My name is Frank. F-R-A-N-K..." Adalet elbowed Frank in the side, "sorry, Adalet! Ms. Lucha, we want to ask you about the autograph you signed for Horace Foster. We found it near his body. As in, dead body."
She gasped, "Horace was murdered?!"
"Yes," Adalet confirmed, "we've never heard of anyone dismembering themselves... How did you meet him? Were you working on the Western doing stunts or something?"
"No, hombre. We met at a restaurant. Horace came over to my table and said he was a fan of mine... that he loved Mexican wrestling," Luz hums remembering the day she met Horace, "he said he wanted to develop a film project for me. But I guess that will never happen now..."
They thanked Luz for her time and showed her out of the station.
"Even though she's a wrestler, I just don't see Luz Lucha going after Horace Foster... Besides, she said he was her fan!" Frank said as they walked towards their car.
"Well, we still don't know that much about our victim..." Adalet ponders flipping through the file she had gotten on their victim, "we know his address. What do you say we go look around his mansion?"
"Great idea!"
Adalet and Frank drove out to the victim's mansion and made their way inside to Horace's trophy/sitting room. They investigated the room and found a few items that could help further their investigation. The first was a faded piece of paper that had fallen under the couch, and the second was a safe set into the wall near the window.
"Did our victim have class or what?" Frank questioned admiring the decor, "I mean, look at that cowboy statue! It's HUGE!"
"Were not here for decorating ideas, Frank," Adalet reminded her partner.
"I know... We have a job to do. Well, what have you found then?" he inquired looking at the items, "a safe, huh? You can learn a lot about victims by what they choose to stash away. No doubt you can crack the code! You also found an accounting document addressed to the victim from Abitbol & Sons Studios? Be still my beating heart!"
"There had been something written on it, but it's faded," Adalet says placing the paper down on the coffee table beside her opened case.
He shrugged, "have at it, Adalet. You'll uncover all the information we need, I'm sure..."
Adalet recovered the missing writing on the faded paper first. She dusted the blank spade below the letterhead, and recovered a short, to the point message addressed to their victim.
"So who sent that accounting document we found at the victim's mansion?" Frank asked.
Adalet frowned, "no idea, it's not signed!"
"You don't know? Don't worry, Adalet, there's a first time for everything!" he reassured, "oh wait... You don't know because no one signed it! But you did find a message: "Horace Foster, you're in big trouble"... Horace must have done something really bad to tick off an accountant... Let's get this to Hannah. I bet she can track down who sent the message!"

With the paper now inside Adalet's case, she turned to the safe. It had a digital keypad, so she looked for the numbers that had the most deterioration to them, and once trying a couple of orders, the door unlocked with a loud click. Adalet opened the safe and inside they found a single piece of jewelry, a gold pendant shaped like a cattle skull and embedded with jewels.
Frank whistled, "wow! That's some fancy jewelry you found in the victim's safe! But wouldn't Horace Foster have more in his safe than this jewelry? Plus it looks like a unique place... And unique jewelry usually has a unique story to go with it."
"Which means we can run the jewelry against the register and find out more about it," Adalet says as she unlocked her tablet.
Once she had pulled up the jewelry registry database, she began matching up the jewelry to the images the program suggested for her. In a matter of minutes, she discovered who the pendant was registered to.
"That jewelry you found in Horace's safe is registered to a certain Eva Grant?" Frank says as he read the file from over her shoulder.
"The file says she's an actress," Adalet said as she skimmed the file, "and her most recent job is listed as the female lead in Horace's latest production!"
"I don't know about you, Adalet," he grins, "but I'd sure like to know what her jewelry was doing at the victim's house! Let's go have a chat with Ms. Grant."
They packed up their supplies and evidence before heading back over to the studio to find Eva Grant. Once they had found the actress relaxing outside of her trailer, they asked how her pendant had made its way into the victim's safe.
"Horace gave that pendant to me for my 22nd birthday..." Eva told them, "Horace was always rescuing strays and I was one of them... When he discovered me, I was sleeping in my car! He gave me a new life! He was like a father to me. He even gave me the lead female role in his latest production!"
"Excuse me for interrupting your eulogy, but if Horace gave YOU the pendant, why was it in HIS safe?" Frank asked.
"The pendant fell off at a party and I spent hours looking for it. When I found it, I decided it would be safer in Horace's care..." she explains playing with her coffee cup nervously, "oh poor Horace! How can the show go on without him?!"
"I can tell you guys are chomping at the bit for more information, but you need to rein in your enthusiasm..." Roxie laughed at her own joke, "sorry about the horsing around, Adalet, but your movie producer was ripped apart by horses! This qualifies as the most unconventional murder weapon I've ever come across!"
"Do you mean Horace Foster was still alive when it happened?!" Frank exclaimed in shock and disgust.
"Unfortunately, yes. But he was drugged. The toxicology report showed both whiskey and ketamine in his system... The killer wanted Mr. Foster really drowsy in order to tie him up," she explained consulting her clipboard, "in addition, there was bruising shaped like shoe prints along the victim's ribs and they show that the killer wears cowboy boots!"
"That's really going to narrow down the pool of suspects on a Western movie set, Roxie. Thanks..." he sighed.
"But just because it's a cowboy movie set, doesn't mean that everyone will be wearing those boots!" Adalet argued, "thanks for the evidence, Roxie!"
They left the morgue and walked across the station to where Russell was waiting for them with the results he had found regarding the playing cards they had sent.
"Hi, Adalet! Way to go finding those playing cards in the victim's briefcase! The four cards you found signify the "Dead Man's Hand". They're what the infamous gunfighter "Wild Bill" Hitchcock was holding when he was shot during a poker game in 1876," Russell rambles before Adalet and Frank could even say hello, "these cards are often used in Westerns to foreshadow death. However, there's no trace of this type of foreshadowing in "The Ornery Die Last"'s script. That said, poker players get a chill down their spines when this configuration comes up..."
"Why the heck would anyone walk around with these four cards in their briefcase?!" Frank demanded to know.
He pulled his glasses off, "exactly... Given the victim's current state, these cards had to have been a message from the killer. And that killer knows their poker..."
"So whoever killed Horace Foster plays poker? Here's hoping we get a full house of suspects, Adalet!" he grins.
"And a royal flush of evidence," Adalet smirked, "now, let's go talk to Hannah about that letter."
They thanked Russell for the evidence he had found then headed down and across the hall to Hannah's lab.
"So Frank, were you afraid of the big bad accountants?" Hannah snickered.
"I never have done well with people who manage money..." Frank grumbled.
She smirked before turning to her computer monitor, "I had a look at the victim's accounts and noticed that he was transferring money into his personal accounts... from an account assigned to Abitbol & Sons Studios!"
"So now we know what the "You're in big trouble" refers to," Adalet nods, "but did you figure out who sent the message to our victim?
"Of course," Hannah answered, "Leo Brooks is the head accountant at the studio and he was responsible for the budget of Horace's film!"
"We're on the same track, Adalet. Let's go talk to this Leo guy!" Frank decided.
Adalet and Frank got the account's office address from Hannah and drove out to the building as fast as they possibly could. They entered the office and Leo gestured for them to have a seat in front of his desk.
"How can I say this Capt. Adalet? Horace Forster was always... problematic about understanding the studio's budgetary constraints," Leo decided on, "he was spending the studio's money on things that were totally unrelated to his film! Renting a 130-foot party yacht comes to mind..."
"So you threatened him. What exactly did you mean by "big trouble", Mr. Brooks?" Adalet inquired.
"Money going "missing" is big enough trouble on its own! That message was just my way of warning Horace to halt his expenditures!" he shouted, pulling out a handkerchief to dab at the sweat beading along his forehead, "I'm in charge of his budget for "The Ornery Die Last" and it's my job on the line when the studio executives start looking for someone to blame!"
"Thanks for being willing to recap at the studio, Adalet! Gives me a thrill to pretend I'm in a Western!" Frank says happily admiring the set, "but the murder we're solving is downright medieval! I'm still having a hard time believing someone tied Horace Foster to horses and quartered him!"
"So far, Leo Brooks is the only suspect we've met who seems upset enough at Horace to have him killed..." Adalet mused, "he said his job was at stake due to Horace's spending..."
"I don't believe for a second that Luz Lucha would have done it. She said Horace was a big fan of hers!" he added with a look of love on his face, "I'm more suspicious of Eva Grant. She said he was like a father to her, but I seriously doubt he thought of her as a daughter considering the jewelry he gave her..."
They jumped at the sound of a fight breaking out just around the corner from them.
"What the heck was that?! A good ol' Western brawl?!" Frank exclaimed sharing a look with his partner.
"It came from the center of the studio lots..." Adalet says as Hunter was already on the way towards the fight, "let's go see what's going on!"
"Damn roach coach did it again! This food truck ought to be condemned! I'm gonna call the dang health inspector!" a grizzly-looking man was whipping a poor food truck while cursing towards the sky.
"Simmer down, hoss!" Frank ordered as they got closer, "what's the problem? Did they run out of chile con carne?"
"Everybody around this studio would be better off if they did! I have never been so sick in my life!" the man yells.
"Well, busting the place won't help any! Say, your shirt says you're a member of the animal staff. What exactly do you do?" he asks noting the embroidery on the shirt.
"These days, I'm in charge of all the horses for "The Ornery Die Last"." he answered shouldering his whip, "Tex Houlihan the name, regaling horses is my game!"
"All the horses for Horace's final film? Even the horses used to rip him apart?" Adalet questioned.
Frank grinned, "you know what you sound like to me, Tex? A prime suspect! Capt. Adalet has some questions for you!"
"Plus since the food truck is right by the movie set, we should look around for more clues!" she added, "now Tex, you were in charge of the horses for Horace Foster's final film?"
Tex smirked, "final's the word for it alright..."
"Given that Horace was ripped apart by horses, you can imagine how this doesn't look great for you..." Frank says with a raised eyebrow.
"You think I could have killed Horace Foster? Why on earth would I have done that? Horace was more than my poker buddy," Tex told them, "he was the only guy in Ivywood who still believed in the Western genre! I'd rather sell my favourite cowboy boots than hurt that old cuss! If it weren't for him, I wouldn't have a job!"
As Tex left the area, Frank and Adalet began searching the food truck for clues. They managed to find some new pieces of evidence that they could use; a torn pile of papers and a wooden chest overflowing with props.
"Did you find anything at the food truck other than chips and cookies, Adalet? Slim pickings, huh?" Frank remarks as he looks at the clues, "well, that prop crate doesn't seem so weird. We are at a movie studio after all. But go for it, rummage through the crate if you think it's worth it. And I'll get this torn paper to the recycling bin for you, Adalet..."
Adalet grabbed the paper from his hands, "and then you can be the one to explain to the Chief why we're missing evidence!"
"What, you actually want to piece together that paper? Alright, be my guest!" he says holding his hands up in surrender.
Adalet placed the torn paper at a safe distance before she dove into the prop chest. Bandannas, fake guns, cigars, hip holsters and boot spurs filled the chest to the brim, but it was the one odd item out that caught her attention.
Frank gags, "you found those bloody gloves in that prop crate near the food truck? How unhygienic..."
"We should send this to Yann," Adalet states as she dropped the glove into a bag.
"By all means, we've got to get these gloves to Yann quickly! Before we catch a disease from them..." he shivers.
Adalet picked up the torn paper next. She taped up the paper piece by piece and discovered that it was another picture of Luz Lucha. But this one was a shot from the wrestling ring, with Luz pinning her opponents to the floor. However, someone had glued a cut out of Horace's face over the opponent's face, and had written YOU ARE NEXT! In the empty side of the picture.
"Whoa!" Frank cheered getting a closer look at the picture, "That torn paper from the food truck turned out to be Luz Lucha doing a Camel Clutch! That's a really painful wrestling move!"
"And it looks like someone wanted our victim to experience it!" Adalet exclaimed, "they cut off Horace's head and glued it over Luz's opponent! The message next to the image reads, "You are next!" Luz must have written this message as a threat!"
"But this image doesn't quite fit with that Luz told us before about Horace being her biggest fan..." he frowns, "we better meet up with Luz for a little discussion."
Adalet and Frank returned to the station while calling Luz back in for more questioning. They sent the bloody glove to the lab before going to confront the Mexican wrestler about her threat to her "biggest fan".
"Ms. Lucha," Frank greeted, "Capt. Adalet and I wanted to ask you about this... collage we found of you and Horace Foster. What was this about?"

Forced Immortality
Guy dies, transmigrates and then dies some more. Contrary to what you might think, this is actually a story about an OP protagonist. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Things to keep in mind before reading: - I have never written a story before so this will most likely end up being pretty bad. - I have done zero planning for this story. - This is mostly something i wanted to try out in my freetime so updates are going to be sporadic at best. - Chapter length will fluctuate until i figure out this whole writing thing. - I have no idea if there will be romance. Might add it in the future if this story somehow doesn't end up as a failure. - There will be some stuff from the Star Wars Universe but this is NOT a Star Wars fanfiction. - The story will be pretty explicit in the gore department so if your squeamish, beware. - This story will be a slow burn. - If any of the above changes, i'll update the synopsis and i might make a seperate chapter just detailing these points. - Last point, English isn't my native language so have some mercy on my poor soul, ok? If none of the above has scared you away then i invite you to join me on this catastrophic ride. It'll probably be kinda fun.....hopefully... This story is also on Scribblehub and Webnovel.
