《Killer Bay》The Young and the Lifeless

Andrea greeted Adalet excitedly with her hands on her hips as the captain was walking into the office, "hello there, Capt. Adalet! Hope you're as excited as I am to head to our next district!"
"Hi, Adalet. I'm here too. Ready to get back to some police work . . ." Amy says with a nervous waver in her voice.
"Amy! What are you doing here?" the chief demanded just noticing the cop, "after everything that happened in White Peaks . . . What happened with your brother . . . You should be resting!"
She sighed, "I'll admit, I've had better days, but I know that getting back to work should clear my mind . . ."
"That's nonsense. You need to rest, Amy. I'll assign Frank to show Adalet around Ivywood," she said ushering the rookie out of the room.
Frank shoots up in his seat like a rocket, "me? But I can't stand Ivywood!"
"Oh please, Frank. It's sunshine every day in Ivywood! It's where all your dreams come true!" Andrea smirked at the man's annoyance while crossing her arms, "there are movie sets galore with new films being made daily . . . Adalet, you might even run into celebrities!"
"I'll have to remember to ask for autographs," Adalet laughed.
"No thanks," Frank grunted, rubbing his temples as he felt an oncoming headache, "all those people with their tiny barking dogs and fake smiles-"
"Frank! You do your job or I'm sending you back home . . . without pay!" Andrea warned.
"Alright!" he held up his hands in surrender, "I'll do it, relax! Come on Adalet, let's go before I get a whoopin'!"
"Well there you have it, Adalet, the best view of all of Ivywood . . . and also the best place to take a nap!" Frank added with a grin as he parked the car as close to the sign as he could, "if you don't mind, I'll just be snoozing right over here . . ."
But before he could make himself comfortable, Adalet grabbed him by the arm, "Frank, what that hanging on the V?"
"What's that, Adalet? Something seems wrong by the sign?" he squinted to see what she saw, "I don't see anything..."
But Adalet and Hunter were already out of the car and on their way towards the sign.
"Oh fine," he grumbled to himself hurrying to catch up with his partner, "let's go investigate. Why do I have a feeling that this isn't going to be the relaxing day I was hoping for . . ."
Adalet and Frank approached the Ivywood sign and got a close-up look at a gruesome sight. Someone had nailed the body of a young woman to the V of the sign, blood was dried on her hands and face, where a wicked smile had been carved into her skin. Around the area they found some clues that could jumpstart the investigation, fresh tire tracks were leading away from the sign, and a broken pile of sparkly plastic.
"Jeepers! That girl tied to the sign's been killed! And that smile cut into her face? That's nasty to the third degree!" Frank whistled.
"This killer is a creeper!" Adalet remarked checking the victim's pockets, "... and no identification on her . . . we're off to a bad start. Hopefully Roxie can tell us something useful."
"And those pieces you picked up were broken when you found them, right? Not like you stepped on them? Either way, have fun putting them back together!" he smirked as he looked over the clues they had, "and this fresh tire track . . . at first I thought you were just playing in the mud, but now I think you're onto something, Adalet!"

"And given that there's no car here," she gestured around the empty hill, "the killer must have left this track while driving away!"
"If you match the tire track to identify the vehicle, we'll know what type of car the killer drove!" he concluded, "come on, Adalet, let's make the killer feel sorry for leaving such a clue for you!"
Adalet began working on the tire tracks first. She uploaded a clear picture of the marking to the vehicle database. She began comparing sections of the tracks to the closest match on file until she had some results.
"Nice going, you matched the tire track we found on the crime scene to a convertible car!" Frank grinned looking over his partner's shoulder, "good thing we have an expert investigator here . . . me! Just kidding, this one's thanks to you, Adalet. Our killer definitely drives a convertible!"
With the tire tracks taken care of, Adalet picked up the broken pieces of sparkly plastic. She glued each piece back together and soon had quite the ugly pair of sunglasses. The right eye had a blue and gold butterfly wing framing the side, while the left was framed with a yellow star-shaped piece.
"Well Adalet, you restored a pair of . . . What the heck are those? Sunglasses?" Frank wrinkled his nose, "I can't stand all this glittery, sparkl-"
"Those would be my sunglasses," Adalet and Frank turned to find a blonde woman approaching them from the hill, "good thing I have another pair because it looks like you broke them."
"First of all, lady, you should be thanking Capt. Adalet for fixing them. Second, why were they on our crime scene?!" he demanded.
"Precisely because it is a crime scene, darling. I was here to cover the murder before anyone else!" she beamed as Adalet returned the women's sunglasses.
"Then we will need to question you on how you knew that before the police!" Adalet responded with a raised eyebrow.
"Sure, but make it quick. In case you didn't know, I'm Holly Hopper," Holly introduced, "Gossip Columnist and every second away is a precious scandal story untold!"
"Spill the beans, Ms. Hopper. Your sunglasses were on the crime scene. How did you know about the crime before the police, and why didn't you report it?" she asked.
"Oh please, sugar. It's my job to find scandal. You don't expect a journalist to spoil all her secrets, do you?" he smirked, "and of course I would have reported the crime . . . right after publishing my article! It's called "Broken Dreams on the Horizon."
Frank growled, "you're going to need to speak to our Police Chief about publishing that. We still need to verify the victim's identity and-"
"Oh silly man, I've already done all that. Her name is Felicia Steppingstone, another actress who came to Ivywood to become a star. She hit the spotlight a couple months back for winning that reality show "Pretty Simple Life," and she's been all the gossip since! Want the advice of a professional?" Holly inquired, "I'd check the Imperial Theater where she signed a star yesterday for the walk of fame. Take the tip or leave it, just don't forget to read the Holly Hopper column for all the hottest gossip!"
They watched Holly leave their crime scene and didn't speak until they saw her disappear around the turn of the hill.
"That Holly Hopper thinks she knows everything, huh? Even about our victim signing a star at the Imperial Theater," Frank remarked.

"We should take her word for it," Adalet pondered.
"Well if you insist," he shrugged, "I guess we can take a look there!"
Once the body had been taken away, Adalet and Frank found their way over to the Imperial Theater. They began searching the area and found some interesting items. There was a larger rd crate overflowing with refreshments supplies. They also found a CD with some faded writing on one side,
"Well, Adalet, you managed to pick up some potentially interesting clues. Is that our victim's face on that CD? Can you reveal the rest of the faded text?" Frank asks, "And do you mind if I go watch a film while you look through that refreshment box?"
"Hate to break it to you, Frank, but the theatre is closed right now," Adalet smirked pointing to the large red CLOSED sign hanging in the windows.
He laughed, "I'm kidding, I'll stick around to see what you find in it!"
Adalet moved picked up the CD first. she dusted the faded text of the disc and recovered the writing that had been marked on it.
"I'll admit, you revealed the text on that CD rather quickly. It reads "Songs 4 My Luv." Frank says out loud, "wow. Whoever made this CD for the victim couldn't even spell the word "love" correctly! Oh well, better send it to the lab to see who this idiot is!"
Placing the CD aside, she began digging through the refreshment box. It was filled with small bags of candy, popcorn boxes and pop glasses, and wrapped up chocolate bars. Under most of those, Adalet pulled out a golden star-shaped picture frame, with B.F.F. written across the top above a circular-shaped picture.
"Not too shabby, Adalet, finding that picture under all those delicious snacks. The girl on the left in this picture looks familiar, doesn't she, Adalet? The blonde hair, the necklace . . ." Frank commented deep in thought.
"It's Felecia, Frank," Adalet told her partner.
"Oh, of course, it's our victim . . . I knew that!" he assured, "the frame reads "BFF" . . . What the heck does that mean, Adalet?"
"Best Friends Forever"
"Really? It's so girly I can't stand it!"
"If they're such good friends, we'd better try and find a match for the other girl in the database!"
Adalet scanned a picture of the two women and cut off their victim from the image to make the search easier. She compared the features of the woman from suggestions from the program and soon had her name and basic information.
"Great work, Adalet. You matched the face of our victim's "Best Friend Forever" to some girl named Abbi Absinthe," Frank reads.
"That brings back memories," Adalet quipped.
"She's a reality TV star," he noted, "just like our victim! Must be one of those rich kids without any talent. Well, you're going to be the one to break it to her that her gal pal's dead!"
It ended up that they didn't have to go far the find Abbi, the reality star was exiting a cafe just around the block and they nearly ran into her on the way back to their car. Adalet broke the news to the woman as quickly and gently as she could.
Abbi gasped and held her dog tighter to her chest, "what? Felicia's dead? No freaking way. That's like, totally not cool."
"From the photo, Adalet found it seems you two were "BFF," and yet that's your only reaction?" Frank inquired suspiciously.
"I don't cry unless I'm wearing waterproof mascara. It looks bad on camera and clogs my pores. But yes, we were like, totally besties," she confirmed, "it's thanks to me that she got accepted into the celeb scene because I told her about the right clubs, the right auditions, everything. So yeah, sure, it sucks for me that she's dead. She was someone I could trust, and that's hard to come by here in Ivywood with everyone being jealous of me all the time."
"People are jealous of you? Well, that might be the biggest revelation you shared with us today, Ms. Absinthe," Adalet says.
Abbi beamed proudly, "call me Abbi, Abbi with an "i" . . . I spell everything with an "i" because I'm a star and everybody knows it!"
"Youch! Someone must have told our victim to smile from ear to ear because she certainly took it word for word!" Roxie laughed at her own joke.
"A bit harsh, don't you think, Roxie?" Frank asks with a raised eyebrow.
She winked, "why so serious, Frank? Anyway, the victim died of blood loss from all the cuts slashed into her body. By how thin the cuts were, I'm thinking the murder weapon had to be some kind of razor. But Adalet, you'll have to find it to make sure!"
"We'll keep our eyes open for them, Roxie," Adalet promised.
"On the victim's skin, I did manage to find some type of powder, which being on the surface of the wounds could only have come from the killer. I looked at the composition of the powder, and found immunoglobulins, beta-lactoglobulin, and also traces of bovine serum albumin," Roxie rambled.
"Can you translate that into English, please?" Frank deadpanned.
"They are the ingredients in whey protein," she clarified, "which is the powder used in protein shakes. That means your killer drinks protein shakes!"
They thanked Roxie for the information before making their way across the station to ask Hannah about the CD they had sent her to analyze.
"Adalet, I hope you didn't bring me this CD to tell me I have bad taste in music!" Hannah teased, "anyway, I listened to the CD which was just a mix of terrible songs using the victim's name, Felicia."
"Oh young love," Frank faked gagging, "it makes me sick to my stomach!"
"The lover boy you're looking for is a DJ and a bad one at that! I was able to match the voice and beats to one Reggie Perez," she says, handing them over a paper with the suspect's info, "besides his bad mash-ups, he's known for having quite a temper. He has been publicly dating Felicia for a few months now."
"A sappy DJ with a bad temper?" he smirked, "I'm just dying to talk to this Reggie fellow . . . Not! Adalet, you better take the reins on this one!"
Adalet rolled her eyes, "can't let you have all the fun can I, Frank?"
They tracked down Reggie to the nightclub where the DJ work. They found him setting up his table for later tonight, and luckily for them the dance floor was empty. After explaining to him why they needed to speak to him, he exploded with rage.
"Who did this to my girl? Do you know who did it? Because I'm about ready to bust a cap up someone's a-"
"Whoa, cool it, kid. Don't want anything broken here, especially not me," Frank said in a calm voice.
"Felicia was my boo, my shorty, my everything and anything. We were madly in love, yo! We were 'bout to hitch it, ya know, like grown-ups and stuff," Reggie smiles momentarily forgetting his anger and sadness. But it didn't last long, he soon started crying, "but now my sugar boo is gone! I ain't got no one to sing love songs to no more! I swear, I'm gonna find the killer, and they are gonna regret ever messing with Reggie Perez. That's DJ Reggie P for ya . . . and I'm getting revenge!"
"I'll be honest, Adalet. Dealing with this homicide and a bunch of lousy suspects was not what I had planned out here in the sunshine!" Frank complained, "one thing's for sure. I sincerely hope my kids don't end up like that brainless Abbi or that angry Reggie character."
"I don't think you have to worry about that, Frank," Adalet reassured him.
He nodded his thanks, "and Holly Hopper? She thinks she can just storm in anywhere and take over the show? Ugh, the longer I'm here the more I can't stand this district!"
"Adalet, if you want, I can take over the case," Amy offered coming over from her desk, "I know Andrea wants me to rest, but people say the only way to feel better is to get back to work!"
"Hold it one second there, Amy Young," ordered Holly appearing suddenly in front of them, "I need to snap some quick photos for the article."
"An article? What article? And why do you need photos of me?" she asked clearly puzzled.
"Because you're famous, Amy! Pose right there, honey! You're a star!" she praised snapping picture after picture with her camera.
She gaped in shock, "what? Me? I'm famous?"
"Smile for the camera, Amy Young!"
"Um, okay . . ."
"And just how is Amy famous exactly," Adalet inquired.
Holly paused long enough to tell them, "don't you see? It's the perfect spin on the unsolved murder of Felicia Steppingstone! Officer Young here looks exactly like Felicia! Murder victim and cop identical . . . it'll make headlines! You'll make headlines, Amy!"
"But I'm not related to the victim! Wouldn't that be false information?" Amy questioned.
"But haven't you always wanted to be famous darling?" she beamed continuing her snapshotting.
"That's enough!" Frank yells stepping between Holly and Amy to block the camera's shots, "I'm putting an end to this right now. Amy, go home and rest. And you, Ms. Hopper, Adalet will need to ask you some more questions!"
"Oh be a good sport," Holly pouted, "I'd love to have Ms. Young pose by the pool where Felicia was last night for her TV show premiere!"
"In your dreams, lady," he glared, "Amy's leaving and Adalet and I will investigate the pool ourselves once we're done with you!"
"First the crime scene, now you're trying to exploit the police team as well? Who exactly do you think you are, Ms. Hopper?" Adalet demanded as Amy made a quick but silent exit.
"I'm someone who knows a good story when she sees one. Ivywood is a jungle, everyone clawing to get on top. The only way to survive is to come up with the next big thing! I've managed to maintain a reputation for three things: driving a gorgeous convertible, making the best protein shakes, and delivering stories. But it's been a while since something hot to trot happened, and less and less people have been reading my column," Holly sighed, "now the magazines are telling me they want someone newer and younger instead. They don't think I have what it takes anymore. But people will be reminded soon enough . . . They need Holly Hopper because I break the news first . . . every time!
After seeing Holly out of the station, Adalet and Frank headed out to the pool she had told them about. While the senior detective snuck away for a quick dip in the cool water, the captain and k-9 searched around the area for anything useful. Adalet found a cellphone on top of one of the small tables, and on another, there was a golden trophy, while Hunter pushed an overflowing pink and silver beauty box out from beside a couch.
Frank rejoined them while drying his hair with a towel, "nice finds, Adalet! Hope you don't mind that I went for a little dip while you were searching around!"
"Not at all Frank," Adalet says with sarcasm dripping from her voice, "you were a great help."
"Oh come on," he smirked placing the towel around his neck, "of course I'm helping you! See, I bet you can reveal something interesting on that faded trophy you picked up! Though if you don't, I'll keep it for myself!"
She moved it out of his reach, "paws off."
"I'm kidding, Adalet! But yikes, "Felicia" is spelled out in rhinestones on that beauty box. It must be the victim's, but no way am I going through that! You'll have to tell me what you find inside!" he tells her firmly, "and the victim's on that phone you picked up, so no doubt it's her . . . I think I'll go blind with all the pink. Good luck unlocking it!"
Adalet unlocked the victim's cell phone first. Once she had gotten it to the home screen, she disabled the passcode so that Hannah wouldn't have to worry about it during her analysis.
"Nice work unlocking the victim's phone, Adalet! Send it off to the lab, will ya? Not that I'm being lazy or anything . . ." Frank grinned, Adalet shoved the phone at him with a smirk, "okay . . . Maybe a tad bit lazy . . . but you're doing such a great job!"
"Flattery will get you nowhere, Frank."
