《Killer Bay》End of the Night

"Adalet, do you think I should take Amy's shift today? The kid's been through so much, she needs a break!" Frank says, "Amy's hometown is not the sweet and innocent place I imagined... Her brother's in a wheelchair, her mother's a harpy... Not to mention her ex is a cannibal, and her best friend got killed! If it was me, I'd be drinking by now!"

"Thank you for your concern, Frank," Amy says having caught the end of the conversation on her way over, "but my family and past are none of your business. Or are you trying to say I'm not fit to work?"

"Amy!" he gulps, "I didn't see you... but it's not what I meant!"

"Well, good, because Chief Marquez expects me to do my job. And so does Adalet." she glared, "all I need is fresh air, and I'll be fine! Adalet, shall we go for a walk before our shift starts?"

"Adalet, was I harsh with Frank?" Amy asks as they reached the bridge, "I'm sure he meant well, and... it's true, I've been through a lot."

"I'm sure Frank didn't take what you said to heart, Amy," Adalet reassured her partner, "and even if he did, he would get over it quickly."

"But work is the best way to forget personal woes. And I'd hate to let you down. A little walk will do me good, and..." she stopped talking as a shocking sight greeted them when they reached the other side of the bridge, "oh, no! Is that a... Sorry, Adalet. Deep breaths. I'm... fine. Totally ready to have a closer look at that bridge, over there."

Adalet and Hunter began searching the area around the bridge while Amy taped off the area around the body. They managed to find a mobile phone lying on the ground just feet from where the body laid, and a paper boat floating along the edge of the river.

"Goodness me, we know this man! It's Roberto Vasquez, the guy who tried to make me his queen in the Love Village!" Amy gasped as she got a good look at the dead man's face.

"I just saw Roberto," Adalet sighs sadly, "during the last case... he claimed to have caught the Night Walker on film! He wanted to prove that the legend is true."

"Well, he's certainly dead now! I'll get the body to Roxie!" she promises pulling out her phone as she looked to see what the captain had found, "wait, you found a paper boat? With the word "walker" written on it? Quick, can you retrieve the rest of the writing that got washed off in the water? And is that the victim's phone? Do you think you can unlock it and see..."

"Hey! What was that?" Amy wondered as they turned to where the snapping of a twig had come from.

"Hello, Capt. Adalet! Hi, sis!" Duncan's smiling face greeted them as he wheeled onto the scene, "oh, wait... is that a body there? Now I'm in trouble, aren't I? Sorry for wandering into your crime scene, Capt. Adalet. I know the drill: you'll have to question me now. I'll wait here until you're ready."

"Nows a perfect time then ever," Adalet replied.

He smiled gently, "Capt. Adalet, don't let Amy treat me differently just because I'm her brother. I know I must be questioned. I was a cop once, remember?"

"But... I don't know what Adalet could ask you, Duncan. It's so absurd to assume you could have killed Roberto!" Amy says in his defence.

"Well, I know a few things that might help: Roberto was fascinated with the Night Walker. Capt. Adalet, I was with you when you found his photos, remember?" Duncan brought up.

Adalet nodded, "I was."

"Roberto must have crossed the Night Walker's path! Everyone who digs too deep into that legend ends up digging their own grave!" he shakes his head sadly, "be careful, Capt. Adalet! And Amy, you know what happens to cops who take personal risks... But I know you'll make the right decision when the time comes."

With those ominous words, Duncan wheeled himself off of the crime scene, leaving Adalet and Amy alone to work in peace. The captain picked up the locked cell phone so that the paper boat would have more time to dry. She brushed some snow off of it to get a look at the lock screen. She typed in the passcode most likely used by Roberto, and it turned out to be the correct one.

"Amazing, Adalet, you've unlocked the victim's phone!" Amy cheered as Adalet handed it over to her partner, "alright, let's send it to Hannah."

With the phone now out of the way, Adalet picked up the dried paper boat and set to work on recovering the words someone had written on the side of it. She gently dusted the paper with her brush and the carbon powder clung to the faint markings that were there. She blew away all of the extra, unneeded dust so that she could read the boat.

"Adalet, you restored the writing on the paper boat you found by the victim! Can I see?" Amy inquired.

Adalet passed her the boat, "sure, I need to pack up my kit anyway."

She frowns as she read the message, "wait, I know these words! "If the birds are 'fraid to sing... and a chill the wind does bring... a shadow moves just out of sight... the Walker visits us tonight!" It's an old lullaby about the Night Walker! Parents sing it to children so they stay out of the woods! Scared me stiff when I was little!"

"Well, if this is used to scare children, I think this message is the killer's attempt to scare us," she smirked not fazed by the eerie message.

"But then we need to find out where this boat came from!" she says as they heard their back-up approaching the bridge.

The older woman hums in thought, "since the paper is a little soaked, the boat must have spent a few minutes in the water... Long enough for the writing to fade... But not long enough for the boat to sink!"

"And if the boat was launched about five minutes upstream from here," Amy pointing in the direction she was referring to, "then it must have come from the mountaintop! Amazing feat of deduction, Adalet! We should go there!"

Once their crime scene had been taken over for them, Adalet and Amy followed the stream north up to the mountains. They scaled the snowy mountainside and found some interesting things along the way. The first was a very scary scarecrow, while the second was a pile of papers that had fallen off of a wooden signboard.

"Adalet, you've found a pile of paper under that information board? You think it might hide something interesting?" Amy wondered.

Adalet nodded, "there's always something interesting under a pile of random papers!"

"And goodness me, what is that... thing?" she asks seeing the other clue.

"A scarecrow," she answered, "very popular during the Halloween season."

"A scarecrow? But... that face! It's the Night Walker's face!" she gasped.

"Which is why we should take a sample of the fabric it's wearing," she replied already taking a closer look at the shirt it was wearing.

"You want to take a sample of the fabric? To see what this thing is made of?" she guessed, "ugh, OK..."

Adalet pulled out some of the loose fibres from the shirt and placed them into a small plastic baggie. With those now ready to send to the lab, she turned to the pile of papers they had discovered. She sifted through all of the flyers and information papers until she found a poster that stood out from the rest of them.

"Adalet, you've unearthed a poster from under that pile of paper?" Amy inquired as her partner pulled it out, "let's see: "Notice: The Night Walker doesn't exist!" Who could have put up this sign on a hiking trail?"

"I don't know," Adalet answered as her eyes skimmed the poster, "but there's a stamp at the bottom!"

"Adalet, can you look up the stamp in the database, so we know which town hall issued this warning?"

Adalet nodded as she pulled out her tablet. She took a picture of the stamp and uploaded it to their database. She compared parts of the stamps to similar ones on file, and soon they had the results they were looking for.

"So, the stamp you found on the poster by the hiking trail is from the Mayor of the Love Village?" Amy blinked.

"We've already met Mayor Bower in a previous investigation..." Adalet reminisces, "and his constituency, the Love Village, is right by the mountains. But, it's odd that he makes posters to deny the Night Walker's existence. Let's ask Mayor Bower why he made that poster!"

Adalet and Amy made their way back down the mountain to where their car was parked and waiting for them. They headed out to the Love Village to talk to the Mayor about his poster that he had made about the Night Walker.

"This Night Walker legend is getting out of control, Capt. Adalet. Someone has to stop it! That's why I'm putting up these posters!" Désiré explains.

"Mayor Bower, are you aware that a man died near the forest bridge?" Adalet asked, "it's the second murder in connection with the Night Walker, not counting various disappearances!"

"And? Are you suggesting it's the work of some ghost from the 19th century? I thought the police chased living criminals. Look, I love a good spooky story as much as anyone! But your Night Walker attracts too many dubious characters to White Peaks," he stated, "like that filmmaker girl. The Night Walker didn't kill her! Her own producer did! Nutjobs killing other nutjobs, so close to the village of love! The sooner they pack up their gadgets and leave, the sooner we can have a group hug and forget about murders!"

"Want some ice in your drink, Adalet? How 'bout icicles in your murder victim? A fantastic weapon: if it melts, you'll never find the evidence!" Roxie says with enthusiasm, "except we're in the mountains, with sub-zero temperatures, haha! A couple of smaller icicles are still sticking out of Roberto's body. Only the one that pierced his heart is missing. And there's another thing, Adalet. I couldn't make sense of it, but luckily, Russell was around!"

"Hey, Adalet! See the victim's t-shirt?" Russell asked, the captain nodded, "I used to have "Government Denies Knowledge" written on it, but now some letters are missing. The killer must have cut them out. It's a message!"

"I see," Amy said as she took a closer look at the shirt, "it now says G V MEN EN K LEDGE. But... how is that a message, Russell? It doesn't mean anything!"

"That's because the real message is formed by the letters that are missing. O-E-R-N-T-D-I-E-S-N-O-W," he lists off.

She pouts, "I still don't understand! It's still just a bunch of letters!"

"A bunch of letters that can almost exactly form the words ANOTHER DIES NOW. Like an anagram. And, considering it was written on a dead body, no doubt about what the killer means," he clarified.

"So, the killer cut out these letters to send us a message via the victim's t-shirt?" Adalet raised an eyebrow.

"Sounds like a macabre crossword puzzle!" Amy commented.

"Exactly!" Russell confirmed, "Adalet, you're dealing with a killer who likes riddles! What a fascinating criminal mind!"

The two of them both thanked Roxie and Russell for their work and the evidence they had found together. Adalet and Amy then left the morgue and headed across the station to the tech lab to check in with Hannah.

"Adalet, this phone was a great find! Remember your last investigation? You learned that Roberto wanted to catch the Night Walker on camera..." Hannah summarized, "well, it turns out, Roberto was filming with his phone when he got killed! Take a seat, Adalet, I'll show you the footage!"

"So, the Night Walker was lurking in the shadows as Roberto recorded the message?" Amy frowned, "perhaps if he had kept quiet instead of talking, he'd still be alive!"

"Either way, Roberto still lost his life," Adalet says, "but he gave us a vital clue: the killer carries the scent of blackberries! Kinda seems like an innocent thing for such a monster to smell like!"

After making a note of the new evidence, Adalet and Amy crossed the hall to the lab where Yann was waiting for them with his results.

"Hello, Adalet. The threads you took from the scarecrow are from an old shirt. They look discoloured, as the fabric is worn out..." Yann explained, "but under the microscope, I could see the thread is from a checkered green fabric."

"A checkered green shirt?" Adalet echoed, "I know a guy who wears one of those, Allen lives in the forest and likes to scare people."

"Ah, you mean Allen Muir, the local hermit!" Amy realized, "incredible memory, Adalet!"

"And we've had complaints against him because he frightens the hikers. Some even believe he's the Night Walker," she added, "which means he might have made this scarecrow, too! Amy, let's go and talk to Allen!"

Adalet and Amy left the station and headed out to the clearing where Allen resided most of the time. They found the hermit crafting another scarecrow, and when they asked about the one they had found in the mountains, he confirmed their suspicions.

"Yes, I made that scarecrow. To scare the humans! The birds are already 'fraid to sing, like in that old song!" Allen explains to them, his hand holding a rock in a white-knuckled grip.

"That rhyme again! Did you make the paper boat, too? To threaten Roberto before you killed him?" Amy demanded.

"I made no threats! I didn't kill anyone! I'm just an old man standing guard against evil! How many more people must die before you listen, Capt. Adalet?" he demanded not giving her the chance to answer, "run home and lock your doors, you fools! The Walker visits YOU tonight!"

"Adalet, I don't know what to believe anymore! I'm just so cold, and confused, and worried about my brother getting mixed up in this," Amy complains as they walked along the snowy mountainside.

"Well, we should recap the evidence before getting emotional," Adalet advises, "we know the killer pretends to be the legendary Night Walker..."

"Which rules out Mayor Bower, right? I mean, how can a guy in a pink suit be the Night Walker?" she questioned, "Allen Muir, on the other hand, uses the Night Walker's legend to keep people away from his territory..."

"Did you hear that strange sound, too, Adalet?!" Amy yells in fear, "I don't know what's real anymore and what's in my imagination! To think that we're chasing the Night Walker sends shivers down my spine... And knowing my brother is a suspect in the murder of Roberto Vasquez totally confuses me..."

"Oh no! Here it comes again!" she cried.

Adalet looked around, "the sound came from up the hill!"

"I'm shivering but I'll follow you anywhere, Adalet!" she promised.

Adalet and Amy ran as fast as they could into the ice cave and the wind could no longer touch them. They looked around the cave made of shiny ice and were greeted by a frightening sight. Stick out of the ice was a hand permanently reaching out, frozen to the point of having black frostbite, with a gaping hole in the center of its palm. Not too far from the hand was a faded map, and near the exit of the cave were the melted remains of a snowman.

"Goodness me...! Are those human bodies in the ice wall?! They're frozen! They're dead!" Amy gasped as Adalet grabbed the hand, it broke off and the captain just blinked at it, "Adalet, you think this means we're in the Night Walker's lair?!"

Adalet counted the number of bodies they could see in the ice, "I think these bodies must be the people who went missing in the mountains!"

The blonde pulled out her long-range walkie-talkie, "station? Adalet found the Night Walker's hideout! We need some specialists to recover frozen bodies from the ice!"

"We have to send this hand to Roxie straight away!" Adalet says placing it into a large enough bag, "we don't have a moment to lose, and from this hand, she can at least identify the body!"

"And you found a map, too! Can you make those faded marks on it visible again?" Amy asked looking over the other clues, "hmm, and is that a melted snowman? I don't even want to look while you search through the bits. Even a snowman can hide something sinister in this place!"

Which was why Adalet decided to examine the snowman first. She looked through the melted snow, hunks of coal, chips of twigs and other typical snowman-making items. But there was one object that she had never used to make a snowman.

"Ugh, you found an eye in that melted snowman? That's disgusting!" Amy gagged as Adalet held up the glass orb.

The captain shook her head, "it's fake, Amy, it's made of glass to be precise."

"Oh, you think it's a fake eye? Phew!" she let out of a breath of relief.

Adalet squinted her eyes at the fake one, "it looks like there's something writing on it, too... But it's so tiny I can barely see it! Why would anyone write on a fake eye..."

"Whatever it is, I'm afraid this eye will give us a glimpse into a nightmare. But if you want to reveal the message, Adalet, I'm right behind you!" she assured.

Adalet dusted the small surface of the eye while she carefully held the orb in-between two of her fingers. After coating the eye in the carbon powder, she blew off all of the extra so that they could have a closer look at what was written on it.

"Roberto, you're wrong! Dr. Crane." Adalet reads out loud.

"Hmmm... it's funny because we know a Dr. Crane, don't we, Adalet? Russell's last name is Crane, and he's a Doctor!" Amy chuckled before her face quickly morphed into one of horror, "oh, wait, it's not funny! Please tell me this heinous eye couldn't have come from Russell! Adalet, is it just me jumping to dark conclusions, or... you also think this makes Russell a suspect?"

She sighed, "sadly, it does... let's talk to Russell."

"My world just crumbled... yet again."

Before they left the mountain, Adalet picked up the faded map. She dusted the faded sections of the paper and recovered one section after another.

"Adalet, you revealed some strange symbols on the map you found! But do you know what they mean?" Amy inquired.

"No," Adalet answered, "there's a sad silhouette, mountains, a car, and a funnel on someone's head?"

"It beats me!" she shrugged.

"Then this map is actually a riddle!" she decided.

"Gosh, then this means it must have been left by the killer! Let's send the map to the lab quickly!" she says as they left the cave.

The partners returned to the station as quickly as they could and sent the hand to the morgue and the map to the lab. Once their clues were in the proper hands, Adalet and Amy headed down to Russell's office to ask him about the eye and Roberto.

"Russell," Amy chewed her lip nervously, "I hope you have an explanation for this fake eye because this investigation already made me scream, and hallucinate a scream, and..."

"You look exhausted, Amy. Take a deep breath and try again. What's troubling you?" Russell inquired clearly concerned.

"Russell, this is serious! Why did you send this creepy message to the victim?" Adalet demanded holding up the fake eye.
