《Killer Bay》The White Peaks Project

"Hey, Adalet, how's it going since your last case? A cannibal maniac, that must have been a treat!" Frank laughed, "well, a treat for you at least, because poor Amy's still shaken up by the fact that her crush snacks on people... I hope being with her family will help her recover... Which means it's just you and me today, Adalet!"

"Adalet! You have to help me, something must have happened to her!" Amy cries as she ran over to them.

"Amy?! What the heck are you doing here?" he asked.

"And who are you talking about?" Adalet added.

"My friend Virginia," Amy clarified, "she was supposed to meet me this morning, but I haven't heard a word all day! I'm so scared for her!"

"Don't worry kid, Adalet will find this Virginia for you! Where do you think she could be?" Frank questions.

"She was filming a documentary about the origins of the Night Walker legend up in the Deep Woods... Please, Adalet, let me come with you! I can help!" she assured.

"Out of the question, Amy!" Adalet said crossing her arms.

"Adalet's right," Frank backs up the captain, "after what happened with Bobby, the only thing you get to do is watch bad reality TV while eating ice cream. Understood?"

"Alright, yes, you're right... I'll just go home then. But call me if you find anything!" Amy ordered as she left the office.

"Are you thinking what I'm thinking, Adalet? If something bad happened to Virginia... Amy might not be able to suffer another shock after the whole Bobby fiasco," Frank sighed.

"Then we better find her," Adalet replied, "Amy mentioned the Deep Woods, Virginia might have gotten lost there! Let's go!"

"I can't believe it, Adalet! There's no way this girl impaled herself by accident... Amy's childhood friend has been murdered!" Frank says as they examined the dead body.

"Which is why we better keep this to ourselves for as long as possible! But we still need to get her body to autopsy," Adalet said as she dialled up Roxie, "Amy did mention Virginia was filming a documentary, that broken video camera we found must be hers..."

"But you'll have to restore it!" he smirks, "and didn't she say that the documentary was about the origins of the Night Walker legend?! Damn, Adalet, could this be why she got killed?"

"Getting ahead of yourself there, Frank," she answered.

"What about that bloody branch? The blood must be Virginia's, but if you think there's something else on it, be my guest!" he told her as he looked at the last clues, "you found a business card, too? Maybe the killer decided to sign their crime for once! Quick, let's recover what was written on it!"

Adalet examined the broken branch first. She took a close look at the blood-stained area and from small fibres caught in the chip grain of the wood. She carefully pulls each one out and placed the fibres into a bag to prevent contamination.

"Great job collecting those fibres off that branch, but I'm not convinced this is going to lead us anywhere..." Frank confesses but took the bag nonetheless, "of course, Adalet, you're the boss! Let's send those fibres for analysis!"

Next, Adalet began working on the camera. Whoever had broken it did a good job, but it wasn't impossible to repair. Soon they had an almost fully functional camera in their hands. It was larger and heavy and looked to be an older model to be filming with.

"Good job fixing that camera you found next to Virginia's body, Adalet! And cool, that thing still uses VHS tapes!" Frank commented pointing to the spot on the side of the camera.

Adalet popped the cover, "the downside is that the tape is stuck! Better send this mess to Hannah!"

Lastly, they had the business card to fix before they could leave the scene. Adalet dusted the faded area of the cardstock and recovered the name along with a message written on the bottom half of the card.

"Great job recovering the words on that business card you found next to Virginia's body! It belongs to Roberto Vasquez!" Frank reads, "Roberto Vasquez... Hey, Adalet isn't he the kooky guy who's obsessed with the Night Walker? We've met him before!"

"I didn't know that Roberto was a filmmaker..." Adalet remarked, "but his "Call me soon" on the card implies he knew the victim. Let's go talk to him!"

Once the body of their victim had been collected and their clues taken with it to the station, Adalet and Frank tracked down Roberto who was now staying in his deceased brother's chalet. When the man answered his door for them, they quickly got down to business.

"Roberto," Adalet greeted, "we're here to talk to you about Virginia Watchbird's murder. We know you two knew each other."

"She's dead?! What a shame! The girl was really cute, and smart at that," Roberto complemented sincerely, "we talked a couple of times, I left her my card, but she never called back. I guess she was too busy with her documentary to realize what a catch I am!"

"Weren't you interested in her documentary, actually? We know how much you love the Night Walker..." Frank says.

"Well... I was too busy appreciating the filmmaker to care much about the footage! Although I doubt it was any good anyway," he shrugged, "to make a good documentary, you have to think like your subject, to become one with their history and their psychosis. Virginia was much too nice for that!"

"Really, Adalet? A VHS video camera? Is it the '80s or something?" Hannah joked.

"If only..." Frank says wistfully, "did you manage to restore the tape?"

"It's as good as new," she showed the tape before inserting it into a VHS player, "and it's labelled "Behind the Scenes #4"! I borrowed an old VHS player from the archives so you could take a look at the footage yourself, Adalet!"

Adalet frowned, "someone put their fingers on Virginia's camera to take it away from her! It must have been her killer, right before they murdered her!"

"But she did say that her research was in an abandoned distillery! All that fermenting booze lying around... If only we knew its location!" for some reason it sounded like Frank wanted to find the distillery for another reason.

"Wait a second, Adalet..." Hannah says doing a quick search on her computer, "here! There's an old distillery on the outskirts of town, right next to the forest!"

"See, Hannah, when you put your mind to it you can actually be useful!" he teased, "and now... Adalet, let's go take a look at the old distillery!"

With the address to the distillery programmed into their GPS, Adalet and Frank drove out to the abandoned building to search it for clues. While Frank admired the large kegs of whiskey, Adalet and Hunter looked around the rest of the room. They came across some interesting things that seemed out of place.

The first was an old bottle of moonshine, the illegal bottle of alcohol clearly standing out among the others. The second thing was another VHS tape, and after the first one, they found it was safe to say that it would be useful. Once they repaired it that is...

"Look at all that booze, Adalet! It's like Christmas!" Frank laughed.

Adalet rolled her eyes, "I think you got drunk just by looking, Frank, you've already forgotten why we're here!"

"Uh, you're right, better get back to the investigation..." he says sheepishly, "this editing table looks like Virginia's center of operations! This broken VHS tape you found must hold more of her footage, but you'll have to repair it! Hey, leave that bottle alone, Adalet, I saw it first!"

"No you didn't!" she yells holding out of his reach, "and besides, the killer could have touched it!"

"Oh, you think it's a clue?" he replied, "if you think there might be fingerprints on the label, you can take it..."

Adalet examined the moonshine bottle first. She dusted the old label and the glass neck of the bottle and recovered a set of clear fingerprints.

"Good job getting fingerprints from that moonshine bottle, Adalet!" Frank praised, "better send them to Hannah for analysis!"

With the bottle done and out of the way, Adalet moved on to the broken VHS tape. Luckily for them, the tape itself hadn't gotten damaged along with the casing, so only the plastic shell needed to be repaired. A bit of masking tape later and the VHS tape was as good as new.

"Great job restoring that VHS tape, Adalet! Hopefully, there's some of Virginia's footage on it!" Frank says, "and since we have all the material we need to watch it here... Are you thinking what I'm thinking, Adalet?"

"Definitely!" Adalet replies as she popped the tape into the VHS player.

"Yes," he smirked, "let's watch it now! We'll have to do without the popcorn though..."

"So Virginia was hired by this Lola Dickinson to film her documentary about the Night Walker..." Frank remarks as the video came to an end.

"And so we'd better go talk to this Lola!" Adalet says taking the tape with her.

They searched the address for Lola Dickinson and tracked her down to a local broadcasting station. Once they made it to their destination, the secretary showed them to the producer's office and introduced them to her.

"What do you want, Capt. Adalet?" Lola asks glancing up from her work, "I'm very busy at the moment; with Virginia dead, I now have a documentary with no director!"

"What, you're still going to make that documentary, even after the murder?!" Frank exclaimed.

"It's dreadful what happened to Virginia, but I put a lot of money into this project. I can't let it die too! I'll dedicate it to her memory. No one was as passionate about the Night Walker legend. Oh, she was so enthusiastic about it!" she praises, "but she shouldn't have been filming out in the woods alone. There are a lot of deranged people roaming around at night... Now she's dead and I've got an unfinished project on my hands. Believe me, this night is turning into a real nightmare, Capt. Adalet!"

"Hey there, Adalet! I took a look at Virginia Watchbird's body, and there's no doubt about it, the tree is what killed her!" Roxie confirmed for them, "she was pushed against the tree and was impaled on the branches. An unconventional murder weapon, and a long slow death!"

"Thanks, Roxie, we get the picture," Frank says before she could go on.

"What he said," Adalet smiles, "but Roxie, the most important thing is to keep this body hidden. Amy can not see it, this is her childhood friend!"

The coroner looked nervous, "oh. Really? That's unfortunate."

Frank frowns, "what do you mean that's unfor-"

"Oh God, VIRGINIA?!" everyone turned to find a distressed-looking Amy in the doorway, "it's not possible, how can this be happening?! Who could have done this to you?!"

"Amy, GET OUT!" Frank roared, "go back to your desk this instant, that's an order!"

"Adalet, you have to find her killer! Promise me you'll find them!" she begged.

"I will, Amy, you have my word," Adalet vowed.

Amy nods her thanks not trusting her voice to speak. She quickly fled from the room as fast as she could.

Frank grumbled under his breath, "... Great job, Roxie."

"Don't blame me. It's her friend, Amy has a right to know. Anyway, as I was saying..." Roxie returned to the matter at hand, "the bruises on Virginia's body told me where the killer had touched her, and when I took a closer look at her clothes, I found traces of pumpkin soup!"

"So our killer drinks pumpkin soup?" he smirked, "I guess the cold-hearted murderer needs it to warm their soul!"

They thanked Roxie for the information and hurried across the station to the forensic lab to check in with Yann and the bloody fibres they had sent him.

"I took a look at the bloody fibres you collected from that branch, Adalet, and I can tell you they're wool fibres! And more precisely, they're wool fibres coming from a pom-pom! See," Yann shows them a magnified image of the fibres, "for a pom-pom the fibres are not knitted but sewed at one end! Which means your killer must have fallen on that branch and left the fibres there! You're looking for a killer wearing a pom-pom on their clothing!"

"A pom-pom?! Our big bad murderer wears a pom-pom? They don't sound that threatening now, do they, Adalet?" Frank snickered.

"It's a piece of evidence, no matter how ridiculous it is," Adalet countered.

"Sorry, I shouldn't talk like that," he apologized sincerely, "pom-pom or not, Virginia's killer is a monster!"

Adalet and Frank crossed the hall and asked Hannah what she had discovered about the fingerprints.

"So the fingerprints you found on that bottle of moonshine belong to a certain Charlie Watchbird, arrested once for drunk driving!" Hannah informed them.

"Watchbird, why does that name sound familiar, Adalet?" Frank questions.

"It sounds familiar because it's the same last name as our victim, Virginia Watchbird!" Adalet answered him.

"Charlie Watchbird is her cousin!" Hannah clarified for them.

"Her cousin?! He may be able to tell us more about Virginia! Let's talk to him!" Frank says.

They got an address for Charlie Watchbird and headed over to his place as fast as they could. Once there they informed the man of his cousin's murder.

"I can't believe someone would kill Virginia, Capt. Adalet. She was the sweetest girl ever!" Charlie tells them in shock.

"Were you close to your cousin, Charlie?" Adalet inquired.

"Like two peas in a pod! I'm trying to renovate this distillery and Virginia wanted to be close to the woods for her documentary, so I let her work there," he answered, "if only I knew filming a documentary about some silly legend would turn out to be so dangerous... I should have protected her! What am I going to tell her parents? I'll never be able to face them at family dinners again!"

"Alright, let's recap, Adalet! Amy's friend Virginia got killed in the Deep Woods while making a documentary on the Night Walker!" Frank starts, "we've met with Lola, the producer of her documentary, who seemed more concerned about the money Virginia's murder was making her lose... And there's Roberto, who clearly tried to flirt with Virginia... What is it all adding up to, Adalet?"

The woman pondered for a moment, "I think we should retrace Virginia's steps through the forest."

"Now? But it's pitch black outside!" he says pointing out the window.

"Then we shouldn't have to worry about too many people bothering us," she smirked.

"Oh, alright," he caved, "if you really think that might help us find Virginia's killer! But if we get lost, I'm blaming you!"

"Alright, here we are, in the middle of the night! We're completely lost, Adalet!" Frank complains as they continued to walk through the high snow, "can you see anything? A landmark, a liquor store, anything?"

A piece of paper slapped into Frank's face by the sudden gust of wind. The detective peeled it off to have a proper look at it.

"Wow! What the hell is that?" he frowns as he looked at the paper, "it's a picture... Wait, I know that face, Adalet! It's the face of the Night Walker! But what is it doing here?!"

Adalet looked in the direction the picture had come from, "it must have come from that cabin over there! Let's go have a look at it!"

The two hurried over to the old and run-down cabin and entered through the broken doorway. The roof had caved in long ago, so the main room was mostly covered in snow, but it didn't make it impossible to find anything. Adalet picked up an old journal off of one of the shelves, while Hunter seemed interested in an old box of random stuff.

"Wow, this cabin looks stuck in the 19th century! And with the picture, we found outside..." Frank trailed off.

"You're right," Adalet agreed, "this must be the Night Walker's cabin!"

"Well, the original Night Walker, at least, the soldier who came back deformed from the war..." he corrects, "so what did you find in his cabin? His journal? "The war made me a killer"... You think you can retrieve the rest of the message?"

"Shouldn't be too hard," she replied, "and Hunter found a box of his old things."

"Let's look inside!" he grinned, "gosh, Adalet, we're in the middle of the greatest mystery White Peaks has ever seen!"

Adalet examined the faded journal first. The pages were old and brown, with cracks along the edges, but they could still be handled with care. She dusts the pages of the book and recovered the long-forgotten text that had been written down.

"Great job, Adalet, you managed to recover the message from the original Night Walker's journal!" Frank said as he took it to free her hands, "it reads "The war made me a killer but I'm a man of peace." Poor guy came back from the war only to get turned into a monster..."

"That orange stain on the journal looks way too fresh to be over 100 years old," Adalet states point to the stain in the corner.

"And..." he swiped his finger along the stain and gave it a lick, "it TASTES like pumpkin soup!"

"That's what the killer eats!" she recalled, "which means the killer must have touched this book!"

"Look, I know I shouldn't taste clues, but now we know for sure that it's worth sending to the lab!" he laughs.

Before returning to the station, Adalet dug through the box of old supplies. Most of the box was filled with old photographs, war medals, and some hunting knives, but there was something too modern inside which clearly didn't belong in the box.
