《Killer Bay》The Hunger Planes

"Adalet, I need to talk to you! There's a mystery I can't solve," Andrea says.

"What is it, Chief?" Adalet asked.

"Two weeks ago an Osprey Airways plane on its way to Pacific Bay Airport disappeared off the radar high up in the mountains. There have been search parties all over the mountains, but we still can't find any survivors!" she tells them, "that's why I need your skills, Adalet. You can find a needle in a haystack, a 100-ton airplane on a mountainside should be child's play! There's one other thing though. One of the passengers on the plane was Bobby Prince. As you know, Amy and he were very close."

"What's that about Bobby?!" Amy asks just joining the conversation, "I knew he was taking a flight, but I haven't heard from him in ages! Andrea, please let me go with Adalet to search for the plane! I can't just sit around here worrying about what happened to Bobby!"

"If it's okay with you, Adalet," Andrea replied.

"It always is!" Adalet beamed.

She nods, "be careful up there. I don't want to have to send out a search party for you two as well!"

"Bobby! Bobby!" Amy yells as Adalet and her pushed through the snowstorm, "it's no use! I can't see anything in this blizzard!"

"Did you hear something?! Who's out there?!" Amy called over the wind.

A shivering figure began to emerge from the snow, "honey bear... You found me..."

"Bobby! You're alive!" she gasped as she hugged the frozen man.

"Only just..." he breathed returning the hug weakly, "no food. We crashed... on the mountain. I found the volcano. Then I heard your voice... Oh, honey bear..."

"Amy, we need to get Bobby back to the station," Adalet says pulling out the walkie-talkie, "I'll radio Mountain Rescue to come and pick him up!"

The two brought Bobby down the mountain to the landing where the rescue would arrive. Once the man had been taken away in the ambulance, Adalet and Amy returned to the mountains.

"Bobby mentioned the volcano!" Adalet recalled, "maybe there are more survivors there, we need to check it out!"

As they reached the top of the mountain, they began searching for any signs of life. However the only signs of life on the lava plane were long gone, a dead body was tied up like a pig roast over the lava with chunks of flesh and muscle missing from his body. They could smell the foul scent of burnt flesh hanging in the air, a clear sign that the body had been cooking for a while. Around the crime scene, they found a pile of camping supplies that sure didn't belong on the lava plane.

"What?! There's... that's a... body! Adalet, that man was roasted!" Amy gasped as her face turned slightly green, "do you think someone was trying to cook and eat this man?! Maybe the survivors got so desperate, they started eating the dead..."

"I don't think so, Amy," Adalet responds as she took a closer look at the body, "check out his expression! Look at the pain! He was alive when this happened. This is murder!"

"It was quick thinking of you to pick up those camping supplies, Adalet. They might be the killer's. Let's search through them for clues!" she decides pulling out her walkie-talkie to radio the rescue crew, "we should also talk to Bobby. We did find him near the crime scene. Mountain Rescue took him back to the station. I just hope he's okay! So many questions! Who is this man? Are there any more survivors?! Adalet, we're going to have our work cut out!"

While they waited for the rescue team to arrive and take the body away, Adalet began looking through the camping supplies. She found what was to be expected, rope, canteens, all empty, a couple of compasses and pickaxes... but oddly there was a pair of rather odd-looking snowshoes among all the modern equipment.

"Ugh, what on earth are those things?! And is that blood on them?!" Amy asks seeing the dark red stains.

"There snowshoes," Adalet answers pulling a large evidence bag out of her case.

"Oh, I see now! They're snowshoes, I used to have a pink pair of those when I was a kid!" she comments, "I've never seen snowshoes like that before, and that blood... I agree, let's hope Yann will be able to tell us more about them!"

Once the rescue chopper had arrived, the cops loaded the body into a bag and were all transported back to the station. The team was waiting for them at the helipad and Roxie took the body immediately while Yann took the snowshoes with him. With their evidence going to be processed, Adalet and Amy were directed to the room where Bobby was recovering.

"Adalet and I need to ask you a few questions about the crash. Are you okay to talk about it?" Amy inquired.

"The crash? Oh, Amy, it was horrible! So cold. The food ran out so quickly. We were starving!" Bobby cries remembering his hunger.

"Bobby... We found a dead body near the volcano... Where we found you. Do you recognize this man?" she asks softly as she placed a photo of their victim on the table.

"Yes, I know him! He was the pilot of our plane! That's Captain Hugo!" he shouts, "I can't believe he's dead! I thought we'd all get out of this alive."

"All? You mean there are more survivors?!" Adalet exclaimed.

"Yes!" Bobby confirmed happily, "after a week we found an abandoned military observatory and sheltered there. There's where I last saw Captain Hugo!"

"If the victim was last seen alive at the military observatory we should go there too! There isn't a moment to lose!" she says quickly exiting.

"But wait," Amy said as she followed close behind, "maybe those survivors are still at the observatory!"

"Good thinking!" Adalet grins, "I'll radio Mountain Rescue to check if anyone is there!"

"So this is where the survivors, well, survived! And where our victim was last seen alive. What a sad place!" Amy commented as they looked around the old observatory, "I just heard that Mountain Rescue managed to evacuate all the survivors back to the station. Yann can make them some of his famous stew!"

"And while he's doing that, we can examine these clues!" Adalet replies placing the items she'd found on a table.

"Do you think that locker belongs to one of the survivors? Perhaps there's something inside about Captain Hugo! Do you reckon you can unlock it?" she questioned, "and you think that torn-up photo might be a clue? I trust your instincts, Adalet. Let's put it back together!"

Adalet worked on the airplane locker first. She turned the dial around until she could hear three clicks, and then opened the small door to see what was inside. The most interesting thing inside was a note someone had stuck to the inner door panel.

"Great job at unlocking that locker, Adalet! So someone left a note in there? What's on it?" Amy inquired.

"Well, it has our victim's name next to a heart. It must be a note for him!" Adalet reasoned, "as for all these numbers and symbols? It must be some kind of secret code, so better give it to Hannah!"

The captain passed the note over to Amy for safekeeping while she moved to work on the torn photo. She taped together the pieces of glossy paper back together until she hand managed to recreate the image. It was of a beautiful young woman holding a small dog on her lap, with a message written on the space beside her.

"Wow, Adalet, the woman in the photo you restored is beautiful! Do you think she's one of the survivors of the plane crash?" Amy wondered.

"Well, the message on the photo doesn't contradict that: "A message for my fans: If I die, blame that pilot!" Adalet reads out, "if this woman didn't like our victim, we should talk to her!"

"Do you think you could find her in the database, Adalet?" she inquired.

She nodded, "yes, but let's get back to the station, I may be Norwegian, but it's freezing up here!"

They returned to the station and dropped the note from the victim off with Hannah before they searched the database for the woman in the photo.

"Since photograph looks really old... It means the woman will look much older in our database!" Adalet says pulling up their ageing program.

"But I'm sure you'll find her!" Amy beamed.

Once they had the ageing program working together with the citizen's database, it was fairly straightforward to find the woman's identity. By comparing some of her features to some older versions the program had generated, they soon had a name to the face.

"Great job Adalet! So that photo you found is an old picture of Celine Dernier!" Amy notes, "Celine Dernier... I know that name! I didn't recognize her, she used to be so pretty... She was the biggest star in Ivywood 50 years ago!"

"So Celine Dernier was on the plane, and judging by that message on the photo, she disliked our victim!" Adalet muses, "maybe she's here with the other survivors! Let's go talk to her!"

They checked the list of survivors the rescue team had created and found the actress's name listed on it. They had Celine brought into one of the interrogation rooms for a private conversation.

"Excuse me, Ms. Dernier? Would it be okay if I got an autograph? You were super famous 50 years ago!" Amy says holding out her notepad and pen, she quickly flushed in embarrassment, "err... I mean... my Nana loves you! I don't mean that only old people love you, but she does... and... uh..."

"Of course she does! Everyone loves me!" Celine laughs as she wrote down her fancy signature, "I'm a star! And don't you forget it."

She breathed a sigh of relief, "anyway. Capt. Adalet needs to ask you some questions about Captain Hugo..."

"That incompetent half-wit! If I had an assistant as useless as that, I'd fire them faster than you can say "Lights. Camera. Action!" she proclaimed.

"How can you talk like that?! Captain Hugo's been roasted!" she informed.

"Roasted?! Ha! Did someone try to eat him? I bet his brain was barely a mouthful," she joked, "look, sweetheart, Captain Hugo just had to keep that plane in the air. And he failed! That kind of incompetence doesn't deserve a second chance."

"You know Adalet, I usually prefer my corpses medium-rare. The one you found at the volcano is practically toasted! Anyway, you're right as usual. This is murder. Our victim was clubbed on the head, tied to a stake and then roasted over the lava! It was the heat cooking his insides that killed him!" Roxie confirmed their suspicions, "the murder weapon is kind of a lava rotisserie! Whoever killed this man was trying to eat him. He was covered in tooth marks and some flesh and skin was missing. I've heard humans taste just like chicken. When you find the killer, Adalet, can you ask if it's true?"

"Roxie, for goodness sake," Amy sighed.

"The only substance the killer left on the body was a strange chemical, calcium phosphate. It's typically only used in certain types of herbal toothpaste," she reports.

"So whoever did this uses herbal toothpaste?" Adalet cocked her head, "I never thought cannibals would brush their teeth!"

They left the morgue and headed across the station to the forensics lab first.

"I've worn snowshoes plenty: hiking in the Arctic, ice fishing in Greenland, but I've never seen a pair like those you found at the volcano!" Yann comments, "that covering on the snowshoes. The bit covered in blood? It's made from the victim's skin!"

"What?! Ugh!" Amy gags, "I just don't have the words! Someone used the victim's skin to make snowshoes!"

"Your killer is one sick puppy. A talented one, though. Look at this stitching on the skin! It's professional work," he praised, "Adalet, I'd bet my bottom dollar that you're looking for someone who can sew!"

"The killer can sew?" Adalet made a 'huh' sound, "I mean it's not a first for me, but why would they use such a nice hobby for something so revolting?!"

With that disgusting fact noted, Adalet and Amy crossed over the hall to check in with Hannah.

"So that code you found in the airline locker was pretty tricky. But you know me, I did it with my eyes closed!" Hannah boasted, "the message is weird though: "Happy Anniversary, darling! I'm hidden in the hold, waiting for you. Betty"."

"A message to the victim talking about an anniversary... Adalet, could this be from the victim's wife?" Amy wondered.

"It would make sense, Amy," Adalet agreed, "Is there anyone on the survivors' list named Betty, Hannah?"

"I'll check the survivor records and see what I can find..." Hannah answered doing a quick search of the name in their files, "oh! Adalet's right! There's a survivor at the station called Betty Hugo! She's your victim's wife! But what does "I'm hidden in the hold, waiting for you" mean? Could she have stowed away on the plane?!"

"That sounds crazy! Why wouldn't she just buy a ticket?!" Amy wondered.

"We'd better go talk to Betty Hugo and find out what happened!" Adalet replies.

Adalet and Amy headed down to the room where the station was keeping the survivors until someone could come and retrieve them. They got one of the officers on duty to bring over Betty Hugo for them, and they took the newly widowed to the side to have a private conversation.

"Oh, my poor husband! Oh, my poor, sweet, handsome, wonderful, caring, dashing-"

"I know, Mrs. Hugo," Amy consoled the weeping woman, "you must've loved him very much."

"Loved him? I adored him! We were everything to each other! I stowed away on his plane, as a surprise for our wedding anniversary! He was so happy to see me. Then we crashed..." Betty began crying more tears, "but even after the crash, he was wonderful to me. He shared his food with me. Kept me warm. We survived together. If I ever find who did this to him, I'll eat them myself!"

"I know Andrea would want us to keep looking for the plane crash, Adalet, but it feels like we've been searching in this fog forever!" Amy complained as they hiked further uphill, "we'd better wait for the fog to clear. So we've got a victim who was roasted alive and then eaten... And a load of plane crash survivors who were all starving!"

"The victim is a mystery to us. But the way, his wife described him you'd think he was some kind of saint! But Celine Dernier obviously hated his guts," Adalet pondered.

"And poor Bobby getting mixed up in another murder. Maybe I should bake him an "I'm sorry you're a suspect again" cake to cheer him up!" she suggested.

"Could have done that with my brother-in-law," the captain says, squinting through the fog, "Amy... do you see what I'm seeing?"

"What? You can see something, Adalet?... Wait, I think it's getting clearer..." she agreed, "I can't believe it, Adalet! You've found the crash site!!! So, we know our victim and the survivors stayed at the crash site for a week..."

"Then they hid in the military observatory," she continued, "at some point, the pilot travelled down the mountain to the lava field where he was murdered. But we're still missing a big chunk of the puzzle. Hopefully, exploring the plane crash will help us fill it in!"

The two women hurried towards the crash site and began searching it for clues. Adalet found a pilot's hat stuck in a snowbank. Amy picked up a copy of the flight manifest before it could get more damaged by the snow. Lastly, Hunter seemed interested in the foot trolley, but that could be just for some scraps of old food on it.

"I can't believe those crash survivors were able to hold up here! It must have been hell for them," Amy sighs as they regrouped behind the broken plane, "I bet there's no more food in that food trolley Hunter found. But maybe there's a clue. Let's search through it."

"Probably not," Adalet chuckled, "but there's blood on this pilot's hat! And there's this white stuff, so we should collect a sample of it."

"And the plane's manifest will tell us who was on that fatal flight... once you've retrieved what was written!" she adds, "oh gosh, is that a pile of bones?"

She looked to where the rookie was starting, "it is, how did we miss that!?"

"Maybe someone else was eaten by the killer?" she offered with a gulp, "let's put the skeleton back together and... and find out!"

Adalet took a sample of the powdery stuff on the victim's hat. She scrapped it into a small glass dish and snapped on the cover to keep it contained. After passing it to Amy to send to Yann later on, she took the flight manifest from her. Adalet dusted the faded parts of the paper and recovered the names on the passenger's list. A couple of the names had been crossed out with small coffins drawn beside them, obviously, these were the poor people who didn't survive the crash or died from the elements.

"Adalet, you cleaned up that manifest good as new! Some of the names are crossed out... with little coffins! Good Lord! These must be the people who died in the crash!" Amy exclaimed sadly, "I hope the survivors were able to give those who died a decent burial."

"Celine Dernier and Bobby are on the list," Adalet noted, "but there's another survivor's name, who is Alice Blick?!"

"Do you think she's still alive?!" she wondered.

"If she is, and if anyone can work out where Alice Blick is, it's Russell!" she replied, "we need to get this manifest to him!"

Adalet moved onto the next piece of evidence they had to examine. She searched through the drawers of the trolley finding old water bottles, candy bar wrappers, crushed cans and oddly enough, fish bones. But under all of that was a sick bag, that looked to have been used.

"That. Is. Disgusting." Amy stated firmly, "Adalet please explain why you picked up a sick bag full of... well... puke, from that food trolley?"

"It looks like someone wrote a message on this bag," Adalet explained.

"I'll get your dusting kit," she says moving over to grab the items, "but please whatever you do, don't open the bag!"

Once Amy had handed Adalet the dusting kit, the captain began dusting the front of the bag. There did turn out to be a message written on the bag, and it was addressed to their victim.

"Here's your dinner Captain Hugo! Love Marcus". Adalet reads.

"So someone wanted to give a bag of sick to our victim? They obviously didn't like him very much!" Amy wrinkled her nose, "we should find out if this Marcus is among the survivors! Let's call the station!"

"Hey, Hannah," Amy greets once the techie answered the call, "can you check and see if any survivors at the station are called Marcus?"

"Ha! No need to check! An air steward called Marcus Peel just tried to steal my cigarettes!" Hannah informed them. The mirth in her voice told them that he most likely is now sporting a black eye or minor bruising. They thanked her for her help and promised they would be there shortly to speak with Marcus.
