《Killer Bay》Dying for the Gold

"Oh! This is so exciting!" Amy squeals as she took her seat in the stands, "I can't believe we're going to see two gold medal Olympic skaters perform in real life!"

"I can't believe Adalet is the Rüya Sadik!" Bobby responds as he pulled her closer, "when you told me about this, I almost didn't believe you!"

"Well, it was nice of Adalet to get us all tickets!" Ramirez says getting his camera ready, "this is a once and a lifetime opportunity!"

"I heard that there's even a men's gold speed skater here!" Heather said as she got her camera ready as well, "oh boy! I hope he's performing too! My article will get front page for sure!"

The whole team along with their families gathered on the stands as they waited for the performance to start. The lights around the outdoor ice rink lit up and shined down on the oval as Un Ange Passe began to play over the speakers. Immediately after, a pair of skaters glided out onto the ice hand in hand.

The first was Adalet. She seemed to glow in the spotlight, with her hair done up into a tight bun, simple but elegant make-up, and glittering accessories adding a nice pop of shine. Her dress had sheer sleeves and an illusion, sweetheart neckline. The collar and wrists of the dress were trimmed with red velvet and sequents, and from the bodice to the skirt the colour of the fabric turned from red to black and back to red, the sequences on her torso made it look like the night sky.

Her male counterpart was a man ten years older named Ilia LeBlanc, a Russian-Canadian with pale skin and curly brown hair that framed his handsome face. His tight black pants ending just above his skates, while his long-sleeved white dress shirt was tucked into them. He had a red sequin vest with gold buttons, and black fingerless gloves to protect his hands. As the pair began their routine, the crowd cheered, photographed, and filmed the performance.

"Holy shit! He just threw Adalet into the air!" Frank gasped as Ilia tossed his partner into the air and caught her as she spun back down.

Heather continued snapping photo after photo, "this is amazing!"

"Even with being so far apart, they move like each other reflections!" Léon remarked.

"If he throws her in the air one more time, I might get sick!" Roxie joked as Adalet spun in mid-air once again, "oh, never mind, Ilia don't drop her!"

Ilia had just lifted Adalet into the air with one hand and the captain balanced on his hand with just her hand to connect them. As they continued to glide across the ice, the Russian's face seemed to morph into one of confusion, and as he cast a glance downwards, it quickly changed to fear. He dropped Adalet and caught her by her hip and leg, holding onto her for so long, that even she looked confused.

"What's he doing?" Andrea wondered as Ilia seemed to be slowing down his pace.

Russell frowned, "it's like he's waiting for something..."

"But what-"

Whatever Yann was going to ask got cut off as a gasp ran out through the crowd. The police team looked back at the rink and made matching reactions as they saw the ice begin to crack and shatter under the skater's blades. Ilia acted quickly, he tossed Adalet away from the cracks and she slid across the ice on her side as the ice under her partner's feet finally gave way and he fell into the cold water below.

"Adalet!!" Amy yelled as the crowd began to flee the stands, "Adalet run!"

The Turk must have heard her because Adalet tried to scramble to her feet as the ice continued to fall into the rink, quickly making its way towards the sidelines. She almost managed to make it to the exit but the rest of the ice broke away and she joined Ilia in the freezing water.

"Adalet!" the team yelled as her head fell under the water.

"Mom!" Ahmet cried breaking through the crowd and running for the rink.

The boy reached the entranceway to the rink but was held back by the security team from going any further. The PBPD team hurried after him and Frank pulled Ahmet away from the rink and gave the boy to Jessica to console. Meanwhile, the rest frantically looked for any signs of either of the skaters.

"Adalet! Ilia!" the Chief shouts, "where are you?!"

"AHH!" a blood-curdling cry of pain rang through the air as Adalet broke through the surface. With the team yelling at her to swim, she paddled through the water to the entrance. Frank and Léon pulled her out of the water and she laid screaming on the snow-covered ground in clear pain.

"Why is she screaming?!" Amy asks as Roxie and Yann changed places with Frank and Léon.

"Oh my god! She has burn marks!" Roxie exclaimed as she examined her teammate's neck, "look, right here on the back of her neck! What is in the water?!"

Yann got a piece of paper from Ramirez and dipped it into the water, when he pulled it out it had burned and shrivelled up, "some type of acid, I think."

"Why would there be acid in a skating rink?!" Hannah wondered as she called an ambulance.

"Ilia!" Adalet yelled, "where's Ilia?!"

Russell looked to the center of the rink, "oh no... Ilia's dead!"

They all looked to where the profiler was pointing and saw the body of the Russian skater floating face down in the water. A rescue crew had arrived and began trying to retrieve the body from the water quickly, but safely so that no one else would get burned.

"Acid in the water under an ice rink, and a skater dead, there's no way this was an accident!" Andrea decided, "team, we have another murder on our hands!"

"And how are we supposed to investigate with Adalet out of commission?!" Frank demanded.

"You and Amy will be partners on this one," she ordered, "the ambulance is here now, so you two begin investigation while the rest of us clear the area."

While Adalet was loaded into the ambulance and taken away to the local hospital, the rest of the team roped off the area and cleared out the rest of the crowd. Frank and Amy returned to the ice rink and searched around the oval for anything that seemed to be out of place. Amy found a gray and blue skating bag that someone must have dropped in their hurry to leave the rink. Frank had managed to find a large textbook about chemistry, which for some reason was sitting on one of the benches.

"Well, while Roxie takes the body back to the morgue, we can take a look at these!" Frank says holding up his find.

"What's a chemistry textbook doing at an ice rink?" Amy wondered as she placed the skating bag down on the bench.

He shrugged, "that's what I thought, but look at you, what's so special about that bag?"

"It was just sitting in the snow near the stands," she explained, "maybe whoever forgot it might have seen something before the murder!"

"It's worth a shot," he replied opening the textbook cover, "and after looking through it, we can recover the missing text on this book!"

Amy first began with the skating bag. She unzipped the curved zipper straight down to the bottom of the bag before she started to look through it. Just as she suspected, there were a pair of skates in the bag along with some supplies to take care of them with. But stuck between the two skates she found a picture of their victim and Adalet, both smiling at the camera as they gave each other a side hug.

"Why was there a picture of Adalet and Ilia in this bag?" Amy wondered, "this isn't her's, nor could it be the victim's!"

"What's that written on the back?" Frank asks pointing to some writing he could see.

She flipped it over, "To our lifetime fan Dimitrius, never give up, never surrender. Ilia & Adalet" Why does that name sound familiar..."

"Wasn't he a suspect in your last case?" Frank questioned, "a skater poster boy for some chocolate company?"

"Oh yeah!" she slapped her forehead, "how could I forget? He must have come to watch the performance!"

"And if he got an autograph from them, he must have come long before the show started!" he reasoned, "so he might have seen something strange."

"Or even the killer!" she replied, "We better go find him!"

Before the two left to go find Dimitrius, they first took a look at the faded inside cover of the textbook. Frank received the dusting kit from the car for Amy and the woman got down to business. She dusted the faded area of the cover where the ink was the worst and recovered a familiar stamped-on message.

"This textbook is from my old high school!" Amy gasped, "look, "Property of White Peaks' Memorial High School Science Class"!"

"What on earth is it doing out here?" Frank questioned, "could someone had had it in their bag?"

She hummed, "I remember my old science teacher would never let us take the textbooks out of the classroom, but I would see her with one sometimes around the school."

"Well, then she may be able to tell us how one could have ended up here!" he replied, "time to go back to high school, Amy!"

Before going back to the school, however, Frank and Amy first began by searching for Dimirius. They found the skater just a few yards from the rink walking alongside the road with a nervous look on his face. They rang their siren a few times to alert him of their arrival before parking a few feet in front of him.

"Dimitrius!" Frank called, "you forgot your bag at the rink, figured we'd be good Samaritans and bright it back!"

"Oh! Thank you!" Dimitrius replied taking his bag back, "I completely forgot about it in the rush!"

"Yeah, witnessing a murder does that to people," he deadpanned.

"But what we want to know is if you saw anything strange while you were getting this autograph," Amy says holding out the photo.

"There was nothing that I saw, I was too busy freaking out," he admitted in embarrassment, "I mean, I was meeting my idols, one who had even investigated me for murder! Besides, I wasn't there for long, got the autograph, thanked them a billion times then left to take my seat."

"What about during?" Frank inquired, "did you notice anything off during their performance?"

Dimitrius thought about it, "no, everything looked the same as their Olympic performance, every jump twist and spin!"

"Until they fell into acid that is," he grumbled, "thanks for the info, kid."

"Well Ms. Levesque isn't here, but we still found so awesome clues!" Amy grins, "let's see what we have here..."

"Well, to start I noticed that the lock on this supply closet is almost smashed to pieces," Frank answered, "and since we know that the killer put acid in the skating rink, it wouldn't be a bad idea to check this out."

She nodded in agreement, "and this pile of porcelain on the desk is strange... we better repair it and find out what it was!"

"And lastly, we have a huge stack of papers to sort through," he sighed.

They decided to examine the lock of the supply cupboard first. Amy noticed a strange burned area on the lock and decided to swab it for a sample. She got off something that looked to be dead skin cells, but it was hard to say for sure.

"Well, hopefully, Yann can tell us what those flakes are!" Frank says taking the dish from Amy, "let's get it to him!"

Next, Frank began searching through the pile of papers they had stumbled across in the classroom. Most of the papers seemed to be recently graded science tests, but there were other papers mixed in with the pile. One of the papers he found was a form for renting the White Peaks ice rink, but it had a denied stamp on it.

"Check this out, Amy!" Frank says as he scanned the paper, "according to this, someone named Bruno Marcotte tried to book the ice rink for a hockey tournament, but it was for today!"

"So he was denied the rink because of Ilia and Adalet's performance!" Amy deduced, "and hockey is a big thing here in White Peaks, Bruno wouldn't have been too happy to have to reschedule!"

"Do you know who this is?" he asked.

She nodded, "he's the high school gym teacher and the hockey coach! He's known for being tough and always gets his way, especially when it comes to sports!"

"Then we better ask him how he felt about not being able to have his tournament!" he decided.

But before going to find the gym teacher, Amy and Frank worked together to repair the broken pieces of porcelain they had found. It turned out that it was originally a coffee mug, with a white base colour and a drawing of the atomic structure of caffeine.

"Oh! I remember this mug!" Amy says holding it in her hands, "this is Ms.Levesque's favourite mug!"

"If this is her favourite mug, then why was it broken?" Frank wondered.

"Because it fell off my desk," a voice answered from the doorway.

Frank and Amy looked over to see a woman in her late thirties standing there staring at them. She had curly black hair and dull blue eyes with deep bags underneath them. Her yellow dress shirt was tucked into a pair of black dress pants, while the red heels caught your eyes.

"Amy Young," Sephora Levesque says, "never thought I'd have you in my classroom again."

"Hello, Ms. Levesque!" Amy greeted, "it's nice to see you again!"

The teacher scowled, "to what do I owe the pleasure of this visit?"

"Ilia LeBlanc was killed this afternoon," Frank answered, "and we found one of your textbooks on the crime scene."

"One of my textbooks was taken out of this classroom?!" Sephora shouted, "who would dare to take one of those to an ice rink?!"

"That's what we were hoping you could answer," he replied, "did you notice is any of your books were missing?"

"No, I check every morning and after school," she told them, "and not one single page was missing this morning, or when I left yesterday."

"Did you take one with you?" Amy asked.

"Not for a couple of days," Sephora responds, "and before you ask, no, I wasn't at the performance, I despise skating and even if I didn't, I'm much too busy with exams to go to something so pointless."

"Oh," she said slightly disappointed, "well, if you find out how the textbook ended up at the rink, please let us know!"

Before returning to the station, Amy leads Frank down to the high school gymnasium. They found the teacher setting up a volleyball net and Amy called over to him. Bruno stopped what he was doing and smiled when he saw his old student.

"Amy!" Bruno smiled, "it so nice to see you again!"

Bruno was a tall and bulky man, with short almost buzzed black hair and bright blue eyes behind a pair of thick-rimmed gray glasses. He was dressed in typical sports clothing, black track pants, a highlighter green shirt that matched his shoes, and a wristwatch strapped to his left wrist.

Amy giggled, "it's nice to see you again too, Mr.Marcotte!"

"Please, you graduated! You can call me Bruno now!" he winked, "so, what brings you back here? And who's your friend?"

"I'm Detective Frank Knight," Frank introduced himself, "and we're here to ask you about wanting to rent the ice rink for a hockey tournament, did you know that there was a murder there during the performance that was scheduled there?"

"A murder?!" Bruno cried, "who died?!"

"Ilia LeBlanc, and almost his skating partner," he responds, "how mad were you that a skating performance was more important than your hockey tournament?"

"I was upset sure, but enough to murder someone? No way!" he denied, "and besides, if I wanted to kill someone for that, I would have gone for the one in charge, not the skater!"

"Do you know who was in charge of the performance?" Amy inquired.

Bruno shook his head, "no, I never got his name, but I think he was a skater too... Or at least is from Canada."

"Thank you, Mr.Mar- I mean, Bruno," she corrected, "we'll be in touch!"

"Well, Ilia sure did burn his performance!" Roxie laughed, "sorry, sorry, I know how bad this is."

"Have you heard back from the hospital about Adalet?" Frank asked.

"No, Jessica is staying there with Ahmet, the poor boy is refusing to leave until he knows his mother is OK," she sighed sadly, "first time he calls Adalet mom, and it's as he's watching her almost get killed!"

"But she wasn't, so it's our job to find out who tried to," he replied, "so what can you tell us about the guy who didn't make it?"

"The acid is what got him, he swallowed some of it and it burned his lungs," she said, "a hard way to go out, but at least it was quick! But I did find out something interesting..."

"What is it?" Amy asked.

"I got Yann to analyses a sample of the rink's water, and he found a perfect balance of acid to water!" Roxie explained, "to clarify, the killer measured out the perfect amount of acid into the water so that it would fill the rink, but not melt the ice until Ilia and Adalet were on it!"

"Wow!" she gasped, "our killer is smart!"

"Very smart," she confirmed, "so smart that they have to have dabbled in chemistry to get this perfect of a ratio of acid to water!"

"So our killer knows chemistry!" Frank stated, "let's hope this helps us narrow down our suspects, Amy!"

After thanking Roxie for her good work, they left the morgue and headed across the station to Yann's lab.

"So Yann, could you tell what those flakes we sent you are?" Frank inquires.

"I analyzed the flakes and they turned out to be burnt skin cells," Yann explained, "my guess is that when the killer took the chemicals from the cupboard, some spilt and burned some skin cells off."

"Wait, how can you be so sure it was the killer?" Amy questioned.

"Well, when I analyzed the water from the rink, I found that the acid mixture the killer used is a combination of chemicals that are commonly found in a science class! And with Hannah's help, we discovered that every chemical the killer put in their mixture is used by the White Peaks high school chemistry class!"

"And since the school is always open to the public, almost anyone could have gone in and stolen the chemicals!" she sighed, "I was hoping this would help our case!"

"But it does!" he says, "since the skin cells were burned by the acid and chemicals, it means that the killer is wearing some fresh acids burns!"

"So we need to keep our eyes out for acid burns!" Frank concluded, "thanks Yann!"

"What was supposed to be a once in a lifetime performance, turned into the end of a skater's life!" Frank says sitting at his desk, "and worst of all, Adalet was almost taken along with him!"

"And we have a few suspects so far, but there's no reason for any of them to want Ilia dead!" Amy responds, "but at least we were able to learn that our killer knows chemistry and has chemical burns!"

"You'd think for someone knowing how to handle chemicals would be able to avoid burning themselves!" he laughed.

"Frank, Amy!" Ramirez grins as he walked over to them, "I have come to offer my services!"

"Your services?" Frank frowned, "what do you mean, Ramirez?"

"Well, I want to help you catch the killer! They almost took my friend!" he explained, "do you have anything you need? Any leads to follow?"

"Oh, I know!" Amy says, "you can find out which one of our suspects has acids burns!"

Ramirez beamed, "great! Oh, this brings back memories! You can count on me!"

"Excuse me! I'm looking for Amy Young and Frank Knight?"
