《Killer Bay》Murder-Go-Round

"Hello, Adalet! Guess what? There's no murder investigation today!" Amy cheers, "since we have nothing to do, I thought I might go for a walk in Inner City, would you like to come with me?"
"Sure!" Adalet smiled, "I've been meaning to take Dean and Hunter for a walk around the city."
"Great! We've seen so much violence so far, but I'm sure there must be some quieter parts in the district," she said, "let's see if we can find them!"
In a quiet part of Inner City...
"Oh, this place is lovely, don't you think, Adalet? It reminds me of my hometown, there's even a carousel!" Amy pointed to the park ride, "I wonder if they're selling tickets for it..."
"It looks like a lady is riding one of the wooden horses," Adalet pointed to the woman whose back was to them.
"I'll ask her about it," she said cupping a hand around her mouth, "excuse me, miss? Are they still selling tickets to the carousel? ... Miss? Hey you, can you hear me?!"
"She isn't responding," she frowns.
"Do you think we should have a look around the carousel, Adalet?" the rookies inquires.
The captain nodded, "yes, but I've got a bad feeling about this..."
As Adalet and Amy approached the carousel, they quickly realized why the woman hadn't answered their calls. She was dead. Blood had poured out of the victim's eyes like she had been crying before her death. A pinkish-purple jacket hung off the carousel above her head with "Evil Woman" written in some white substance. There was also a photo under the horse the body was slumped over, but it had been torn to pieces.
"Oh dear, no wonder that woman didn't answer me, she's... She's dead!" Amy cried as she saw the woman slumped over the horse, "I've never seen someone crying blood before, have you, Adalet? It's ghastly!"
"Looks like we do have a case today," Adalet said removing the jacket off the carousel.
"You're right, it's time to put our investigating caps back on! And I see you've already found some clues! This torn photo might tell us who the victim is!" she says picking up the pieces, "and this jacket matches her skirt. It's very high quality... But the message on it, "Evil woman"... Whoever killed her really had a grudge!"
"It'd be interesting to know what was used to write this despicable message on her jacket," she mused.
"I'll get your collecting kit straight away!" she replied running back to the car.
Once Amy had returned with the case, Adalet placed it on the ground and open it up. She got out a cotton swab and a dish and turned to the jacket. She brushed the cotton over the white letters and tapped off the powdery substance into the dish. She repeated this process until she had accumulated a large enough sample to send to the lab.
"Excellent work, Adalet! You collected a perfect sample of powder from the victim's jacket!" Amy cheered taking the sample, "hopefully Yann can tell us what was used to write this horrible message. I'll get this sample to the lab for you, Adalet!"
Adalet now picked up the torn pieces of the photo. She taped each piece back together and saw that it was a picture of three people at the beach. The only woman looked just like the victim, while the man bared a striking resemblance to a certain Russian, and the small boy in-between the two looked to be their son.

"You put that torn photo back together even more quickly than usual! And look, it's a cute family portrait!" Amy coos seeing the three people.
"The lady in that photo is obviously our victim!" Adalet remarked.
She leaned in for a closer look, "... She doesn't seem very cheerful, does she? Who checks their phone at a moment like that?"
"Apparently this woman," she replied, "but I know who the man is, I meet him during my last case, he's a Russian gangster."
"You say you recognize the man on the picture, Adalet? You've met him in your previous investigation... And he's a Russian gangster?!" she exclaims, "Oh right, I've heard Frank talking about him. Nikolai Kamarov is the leader of the Russian community in Inner City, is that right?"
"Which means that our victim must be his wife," Adalet pulled up Nikolai's file, "she's called... Odette Kamarov, according to the files we have on Nikolai."
"Odette Kamarov..." Amy muses, "that name sounds familiar. She was a dancer, wasn't she? I remember my ballet teacher being sad that Odette ended her career after the birth of her son."
"Oh yeah!" she hums, "I think I met her a couple of times back when I used to dance... She was kind of cold if I recall correctly."
"Really?!" she gasped, "but, Odette was a high-class dancer! She danced all over the world!"
"And so did I," she shrugged like it was no big deal, "I stopped after I went to the Olympics, mother wasn't too happy!"
"We really need to sit down and talk about this one of these days," she commented, "but for now we better go talk to Nikolai Kamarov and let him know about his wife's death, you're right. I hate giving this kind of news to the family... The poor man will be so sad!"
After Roxie had arrived and taken away the victim and the sample for Yann, Adalet and Amy drove to the victim's house. They knocked on the front door and Nikolai answered it quickly. He welcomed them inside and Adalet broke the news to him as quickly, and gently as she could.
"Odette is dead?" Nikolai said with a shocked expression.
"I'm afraid so. We're sorry for your loss, Mr. Kamarov," Amy says sincerely.
"Her killer will be sorry as well! How dare anyone take her from me?! Don't they know who I am?" he roared.
"Uh... Uh," she gulps nervously, "We found what appears to be a family photo next to her body. Odette seemed unhappy in it... Was everything alright at home?"
"Not exactly. There was always something more important to her than me and our son! Odette wasn't a very good mother," he admitted, "no matter how hard I tried to shake some sense into her. But Andrew still needed her! I'm warning you, Capt. Adalet! If you don't find out who did this to me and quickly, I'll take matters into my own hands!"
"I hear you loud and clear!" Adalet promised, "you have nothing to worry about, Odette's killer will be caught before the day is done!"
Adalet and Amy watched as Nikolai nodded his head before he marched out of his own house. The cops exchanged looks and let out the breaths they had been holding.
"Adalet, I don't know how you managed to keep your cool! Kamarov is a scary man!" Amy squeaked.
"He didn't seem sad to hear about his wife's death," Adalet commented, "he was angrier because he thinks someone is disrespecting him!"

"He sounds like he genuinely cares about their son, though. He looked like a kind father on the picture you found..." she remarks looking around the living room filled with toys.
"Having a look around Odette and Nikolai's house might tell us more about our victim..." she pondered, "and her family life!"
She nodded in agreement, "let's do this!"
They looked around the living room for anything that could tell them more about their victim and possibly her killer. Amongst the toys scattered on the floor, they found a broken phone and a messy magazine rack.
"You found a magazine rack?" Amy cocked her head.
"It could be a good place to hide something," Adalet explained.
"And find something!" she agreed, "and you also found a broken phone! Good thing you're a pro at fixing this kind of device. I wouldn't know what to do with it!"
Adalet picked up the broken phone first and a bottle of super glue. She easily fused the pieces back together and luckily for them the insides of the device hadn't been broken too badly. The phone powdered up and a lock screen greeted them.
"Good job restoring the phone you found in our victim's home, Adalet! Not that I'm surprised!" Amy adds, "and with your super skills, I'm sure you'll be able to unlock this phone in no time at all!"
Adalet didn't take longer than five minutes to unlock the cell phone in her hands. When the device granted them access, she quickly disables the passcode and took a look with Amy at the home screen.
"We're in luck, the phone you found in Kamarov's house must belong to our victim, there's a picture of her on it!" Amy pointed to the old photo of the victim, "hmm, her home screen shows an old picture of her doing ballet... She must have really missed the limelight."
"Limelight or lemon light, we'd better get this phone to Hannah so she can rummage through its data!" Adalet replies setting it aside.
Adalet turned to the magazine rack. She dug through the pile of magazines pulling each one out of the rack. As she reached the bottom of the pile, she found a pair of binoculars hidden under all of the paper.
"You found binoculars in that magazine rack? What a weird place to put them!" Amy commented.
"There's a name written on the binoculars," Adalet says showing her the tag, "Sergei Yablokov"."
"Wait, Adalet, I'll have a look at the files for you..." she said quickly checking them on her phone, "ah, there, Sergei Yablokov is a Russian criminal. He is the second in command of Nikolai Kamarov!"
"We had better go talk to Mr. Yablokov," she decided.
"I just hope he won't be as scary as his boss!" she gulped.
They found Sergei in another room of the house. The other Russian man looked even scarier than Nikolai did, with visible bruises and tattoos all over his arms, and the cold glare he was giving didn't help. Adalet asked him about the binoculars they had found and if they were his.
"Yes, those are my binoculars," Sergei confirmed, "I used them to keep an eye on Odette for Nikolai."
"Keep an eye on Odette? Why would you have to do that?" Adalet inquired.
"Oh, Nikolai's always been paranoid. He wanted to make sure nothing would happen to his trophy wife," he shrugged.
"Your surveillance didn't work very well, did it? You didn't even see her getting killed..." Amy deadpanned.
"Look, blondie, I'm not a babysitter, alright? I wasn't about to waste my time looking at Odette when we're at war with the Chinese!" Sergei grinned his teeth, "now Kamarov's going to have my head on a plate even though he's the one who was too weak to protect his wife! So if we're done here, I've got damage-control to take care of!"
Later at the office...
"We have to stop meeting like this, Adalet... How about Happy Hour next time around?" Roxie suggested.
"As long as I can be the sober driver!" Adalet laughed.
"Ah, as long as the murder business is still booming, I guess we can't escape it! Meanwhile, I have the cause of death for your victim," she went on, "a strong blood thinner was used to make her hemorrhage from all orifices. I found high traces of it in her stomach along with coffee. This was no accidental overdose. Which means that this blood thinner is your murder weapon, Adalet!"
"Did the killer leave anything behind?" she asks.
"I also found two reddish-purple marks right over her neck artery -- where people usually check for a pulse! It seems that the killer wanted to make sure she was dead and left some of their lunch behind," she says, "on examination of the marks, I found traces of beet juice and onion enzymes... Which are two major ingredients in borsch, a Russian stew!"
"So the killer eats Russian stew! Don't worry, I'll add it to the notes!" Amy assured.
"Could you find out what that powder was, Yann?" Adalet inquired.
"The white powdery substance you collected from the victim's jacket wasn't cocaine or anything glamorous. It was chalk! My daughter always comes home from school covered in the stuff! That girl loves hopscotch..." Yann added with a slight smile.
"So the killer used chalk to write on the victim's jacket? Hm," Amy hums, "I'd better write this down!"
"Hey there, Adalet," Hannah spoke up, "so I had a look at your victim's phone, and shortly before her death she tried to call a certain Ross Barthe."
"Ross Barthe? I know that name!" she says, "he used to be a famous ballet dancer! We... We all had a crush on him in my ballet class."
"You did ballet? Ha, how am I not surprised?" she rolls her eyes, "I can just picture you in your little tutu..."
"Hey! Don't dis ballet," Adalet smirked, "it's the reason I won the Olympics. But I recognized the name too, and correct me if I'm wrong, but he and the victim used to be partners."
Hannah nodded, "Ross Barthe used to be Odette's former dance partner, Adalet."
"I can't believe we're going to interrogate Ross Barthe!" Amy squealed, "... I have butterflies in my stomach. Does my hair look alright, Adalet?"
"It looks fine," Adalet promised.
Adalet and Amy got the address for the studio where Ross was working and headed over to talk to him. When they got to the studio, Adalet informed the dancer of his partner's death.
"Odette is dead? I... I can't believe it!" Ross cried, "she tried to call me this morning, but I was working and didn't pick up..."
"Did Odette call you often, Mr. Barthe?" Adalet asks.
"She would come to me in times of trouble. And she had her share of trouble. Kamarov is a control freak! He treated Odette like she was just another possession!" he glares, "I never understood why she decided to marry him. And then she had the kid, and her career was over. Such a waste of talent..."
Later on, at the station...
"Adalet, we've already found quite a lot of info about our victim! Would you like me to sum it all up for you?" Amy asks.
"Go right ahead!" Adalet responded.
"First, you've discovered that the killer eats Russian stew and uses chalk! We've also seen that Nikolai Kamarov, Russian leader and our victim's husband, is on edge and bent on revenge, which can't lead to anything good," she summarizes as she looked over her notes, "Ross Barthe used to be Odette's dance partner and seems to disapprove of her new life. But he's still as handsome as ever... And Sergei Yablokov, Nikolai's right-hand man, resented having to look after Odette and doesn't even care that she died!"
"Capt. Adalet! I demand to speak to Capt. Adalet this instant!! Ah, there you are!" Nikolai ells as he spotted the woman.
"Mr. Kamarov? What is going on?" Adalet asks standing up from her chair.
"I'll tell you what's going on! My son has just been abducted!!" he shouted.
"Andrew has been abducted?!" Amy gasped, "when did this happen?"
"Just now! His nanny called to say she'd taken him to the playground," Nikolai waved his cellphone, "and suddenly he was gone! First, my wife gets killed, then my son gets kidnapped, and you're still standing around like a bunch of idiots!"
"If I may, Mr. Kamarov, there's no coincidence here. The death of your wife and abduction of your child are too close in time not to be connected," Russell speaks up having heard the commotion from his office, "this is the work of a single person. Think of where Capt. Adalet found the body. On a carousel, a children's attraction. And now your child was abducted from the playground? Someone is trying to send you a message, Mr. Kamarov."
"Then I'll send them my reply, with bullets!" Nikolai spat.
"Mr... Mr. Kamarov," Amy squeaks, "please, let Capt. Adalet handle this! We will go to the playground to look for clues about your son's abduction!"
"You'd better hurry, Adalet," Russell told her, "the first three hours are crucial in finding an abducted child. And remember: finding Andrew's kidnapper means finding Odette's killer!"
"Oh dear..." she breathed.
Adalet nodded, "let's hurry to the playground, Amy. And while we're there, we'd better have a chat with Andrew's nanny, too!"
At the park, with Tammy...
"Andrew and I were doing chalk drawings on the sidewalk when... when..." Tammy was starting to hyperventilate.
"Try to calm down, Ms. Baker," Amy says in a soft tone, "tell Capt. Adalet exactly what happened."
"I don't know! I looked away for a second and when I turned back, Andrew was gone!" she cries, "Nikolai is going to kill me for this! He's so violent!"
Adalet hesitated with her question, "... Do you think Nikolai would ever hurt Andrew?"
"I don't know! He's capable of anything. It's no life for a precious little boy like Andrew, growing up in a criminal's house!" Tammy yelled with anger, "and now... Now you're saying Andrew's been abducted by his mother's killer! The poor boy! What will happen to him?!"
"We hope nothing will," Adalet replies, "thank you for speaking with us, Tammy."
"Poor Tammy..." Amy sighed as the nanny walked away, "she seems terrified of Mr. Kamarov's reaction... And I can't blame her! But she also sounded genuinely concerned about little Andrew. Oh Adalet, I hope you can find him in time!!"
"So do I," she says, "but for now we must find as many clues as possible. Learning more about Andrew might help us find his abductor!"
"Should we go have a look at his play corner, Adalet?" she suggested.
She smiled, "great idea! We can head over after we check out the playground!"
Adalet and Amy headed to the playground equipment and looked around for any signs of Andrew's abductor and Odette's killer. They found a cute stuffed bunny with a strange goo on its ear, and an old book that was worn from the years of use.
"Awww, you found a plush bunny, and there's Andrew's name on it! The poor boy must have dropped it when he got abducted! And now he'll be scared and without his bunny..." Amy panicked.
"Don't worry, Amy, we'll find him," Adalet promised.
"I'm sorry, Adalet, I know I must get a grip," she sighed, "but it's the first time I'm working on a child abduction... And to think he's been kidnapped by his mother's killer is only making things worse! I'll focus now."
She nodded, "the bunny is covered in some kind of pink goo. We'd better collect a sample!"
"And you also found... a book? Hm, there was something written inside, but it's all faded. Do you think we should try and retrieve what was written?" she inquired.
Adalet swabbed the pink goo off the bunny's ear and transferred the substance to a micro slide.
"Good job, Adalet! Now that you've collected a sample of pink goo from Andrew's bunny, we can send it to Yann!" Amy says taking the sample, "I'll get on it!"
Now that the sample was out of her hands, Adalet was able to work on the faded book. She dusted the faded inscription of the book and discovered that it was entirely written in Chinese characters.
"Excellent work as always, Adalet! You've managed to retrieve what was written on this book you found in the playground!" Amy grinned looking at the book, her face quickly fell, "except it's all in Chinese and I have no idea what it says!"
"We need to get this book to Hannah!," Adalet replied, "she will find out what it's about!"
At the Kamarov house, Andrew's Play Corner...
"Searching Andrew's play corner was an inspired idea, Adalet! This torn document definitely doesn't belong in there," Amy decided, "and you're sure to piece it together in no time!"
"Shouldn't be a problem," Adalet smirked.
"And if there's one lesson I have definitely learned from you, it checks all potential hiding places! This toy box could have a major clue in it," she pondered, "let's have a look!"
