《THE RUNNING》26

'Ellie, wake up!' a clear voice yelled at me. It sounded so familiar, but I couldn't place it. Just 5 more minutes, I swear..

'God damn it Elenore, WAKE UP!' it screamed again. Jolting from my deep sleep, I shot up in my bed, eyes wide and heart hammering in my chest. What the hell was that for?

'Nikita! Why did you do that?!' I scolded, eyes bleary and unfocused from sleep. The only thing I could make out was the window to the left of my bed, casting tendrils of newly risen sunlight into the dark bedroom. Extending my arms above my head, locking my hands together and pulling, I felt my shoulders and back pop pleasurably. Smiling slightly, I reached for my toes before Nikita stopped me dead in my tracks.

'You got shot with a sleeping dart, you silly girl! Don't you understand?' I froze, unable to move or respond. Now that my vision was clearing, I got a good look around. That window I was so used to seeing? It had prison bars set into the stone outlining the frame. The dark bedroom? It wasn't Tiberius' and I's warm and cream painted usual quarters, with cozy fireplace and high arched ceilings. No, this bedroom was much darker with greenish gray walls and a tall flat ceiling, a glass chandelier hanging dully among the soft outlines of tree branches above my head.

'Wha-what?' I couldn't comprehend what had happened. Why couldn't I understand?

'Look around, Elenore! Where do you think you are? In the Mansion? Remember what happened the last time you were awake. Tiberius? Kara? The darts?'

Suddenly it all started flooding back to me, memories crashing into the walls of my skull and swamping my thoughts. I knew what had happened.

I remember the darts, and Tiberius, and running back with Kara when everything went black.

'We..we were kidnapped, weren't we?' I asked slowly, honestly not wanting to hear her answer. Stay calm, Elenore, everything will be all right. I'll walk out of this room and find Tiberius standing there waiting for me, a huge smile on his face as he yells out "Gotcha!"

Almost reluctantly, she whispered a small 'Yes.'

Against my own will, a muffled sob escaped my lips, the pressure of tears building behind my eyes as saliva thickened on my tongue. Gripping the corner of the gray covers in a tight fist, I threw the heavy cloth from my body, my fully clothed body. Dressed in a pair of matching gray sweatpants and a hoodie, I gasped. Someone had to have dressed me.

Quickly standing as my toes were tickled by the rug, I suddenly grew panicky. Who had kidnapped me? Was Tiberius, Kara, and Haley okay? What about Brenda, Lilly, and Alesha?

Racing to one of the 2 full length windows which had a small stone balcony on the other side, I figured out that they were actually french doors. I grabbed a hold of the prison-like bars with both hands and shook them viciously. Without a single creak, my heart sank. Spinning around on my heel, I eyed one of the 3 doors in the room. Sprinting to one and flinging it open, I discovered it was a spacious black marbled bathroom, the countertop and shower glittering with cleanliness. Grunting irritatedly, I came to the second. Trying the crystal and silver handle, I found it was locked. Bingo!

Quietly lowering myself to the floor on my hands and knees, I rested the left side of my head against the cold tile and peered past the small space underneath the heavy wooden door. Seeing nothing but a long hallway and the bottoms of various chair-legs, I listened intently for any signs of movement or life. After nearly 20 seconds, I rose from my position and fingered the necklace Haley had assembled and given to me when she was fixing my hair and makeup for The Day of Black. Holding the Wolf Paw between my forefinger and thumb with my left hand, I gently tugged at the pad of the paw with my right, revealing a needle-like pin that was tucked safely into the metal ornament.

About an inch long, the length of the charm, the silver needle had been nestled inside the Paw ever since my father had given it to me when I was born. Too hard for a child to open it, I was safe to play with the bracelet as a toddler and as I grew, mother and Isaac taught me how to pick many different locks with it. Silently thanking them for all they've taught me, I went to work by sliding the needle into the keyhole, wiggling and sliding it around as I remembered to do so. Hearing a faint click, I smiled slyly to myself. Thought you could keep me in this room, did ya?

Sliding and locking the needle back into place in my charm, I peered into the hallway from underneath the door one more time before silently inching it open.

I know she'll hate me, but so what?

Yesterday Elenore Burns, Luna of the Wolf Territories, was kidnapped. By me. Okay, well I helped kidnap her. Why, you may ask?

She was a bitch.

Always acting like she cares about everybody, roaming around with that blonde-headed bimbo they call a Beta. Fake! How could anybody believe that act she's pulling? She's even fooled Alpha Connall for Goddess' sake!

Walking past her room, I hear her running around inside, probably trying to find an exit. Smirking at her useless efforts, I strode further down the hallway infront of our true Alpha's office.

I knocked on the door with my knuckles. "Alpha? Elenore Burns is awake, sir."

A muffled "Thank you" vibrated from the other side of the door. Hearing a set of heavy footsteps coming towards the door, I backed away and bowed my head. The door swung open and all I saw was his dark brown house shoes. Not really the kind of footwear for someone in his position, if you ask me.

"Let's go introduce ourselves to our guest, shall we?" he asked, turning his body in the direction of her room. Raising my head, I smiled at the face of Alpha Blade Connall.

"Yes, I'm sure she'll be happy to see us," I sneered, walking side-by-side with Alpha Blade as I pushed my guilt down, deep down, until all that was left was an empty void I could refill with pain and revenge. I had a reason to feel this way, and it wasn't necessarily Ellie's fault, but taking her was easier and faster. After all, I've never been known for my patience.
