《THE RUNNING》8

Elenore's POV.

"What happened to her?!" A voice filled with anger and power growled.

"S-she was already weak as is,and didn't have a chance to eat, so when you s-scared her, she fainted," another voice whimpered. Haley.

Why the hell is Alpha Connall speaking to her like that? Haley didn't do anything wrong!

Pulling against my own drowsiness, I opened my eyelids to find the green orbs of Alpha Connall looking down on me, with such intensity I wanted to curl into a ball and turn invisible. "A-Alpha Con-Connall!" I whisper screamed, still receiving his undivided attention. He leaned over my body so close it shocked me, and what did I do? I started rolling off the couch I was lain on.

Feeling the cold air beneath me, I shut my eyes and waited for the impact of my back hitting the hard ground, but it never came.

Looking around once again, I saw Alpha Connall with one hand wrapped under my back and one under my bent knees. He caught me?

I started to shake with panic and alarm. What is he yelled at me for being so damn clumsy? That he wished he picked another mate, one that wasn't a clutz? I don't know if I could take that..

Instead of yelling at me, he straightened up and gently sat me back on the couch, walking out of the room without a word. I sat on the middle cushion of the soft plush couch, seeing a damp rag on the coffee table infront of me, with water droplets dripping onto the tile floor.

I was in shock. No, more than shock! He caught me and didn't scream at me or even growl, like I figured he would.

"Ellie? Are you okay?", Haley asked. I had completely forgotten she was standing there.

"Yea, I..", I trailed off, sighing and rubbing my eye. "I think I'm just gonna go to bed."

"Okay, well here," she said, grabbing a granola bar off the table behind her."Eat this before you go to bed. Don't need you passing out again, do we?", she joked, a smile playing her lips. I smiled back lightly for her sake, and stood up while grabbing the granola bar from her hands.

"Thanks, Haley. I don't know what I would do without you," I whispered and brought her in for a hug. She gladly accepted and softly rocked us back and forth. After a minutes, she pulled back and ushered me out of the living room, it looked like, and instructed me on how to get to my room.

"Up the stairs, turn left, 8 doors down on the right", I absorbed what she told me. I nodded and walked off, repeating what she told me in my head. Unwrapping the granola bar and turning left at the top of the stairs, I took a bite of the chewy goodness, savoring the sweet taste. When I was almost to my door 8 doors down, I stopped. Had she said left or right?

The doors on the left started a little earlier than the ones on the right, so I reached the 8th door on the left side a little faster. Feeling conflicted, I sighed, and rested my hand on the door handle of the left door. Before I could turn it, though, I heard a voice behind me.

"What are you doing?", Alpha Connall spoke with a stern tone, looking at me with a curious expression on his face.

"I-I was just going to my room, Alpha, but I got l-lost," I stuttered, my face looking down at the ground submissively.

"You don't have to call me Alpha Connall anymore, Elenore. You are my mate now, so call me Tiberius," Alp- Tiberius stated simply, his stare burning holes in the top of my head. "And look at me when I'm talking to you.", he growled.

Slowly, I raised my eyes to look up at him standing 4 feet away. Anyone could feel the powerful aura that enveloped him, even humans. "Yes Tiberius." I uttered softly, my voice barely above a whisper. Tiberius was around 6'4" and wearing a tight black V-neck T-shirt with dark wash blue jeans, a dog tag around his neck paired with a thick black and silver metal ring on his right index finger. Looking up at his face for the second time ever, I was taken aback.

His face was oval shaped, his widows peak softly outlining his dark brown-almost black- hairline. High cheekbones contoured his sculpted features, his strong jawline covered in light black facial hair. A slender nose came down to his plump, pink lips, making it impossible to not imagine them pressing down on mine..

I heard a deep rumbling and snapped out of my haze. Realizing I was staring, he started chuckling, in turn making my face go beet red. Feeling my face grow hot, I looked down in embarrassment while the rumbling came to a slow stop.

Seeing a pair of dark brown shoes walk towards me from my peripheral vision, I grew tense, not wanting Tiberius to yell or growl at me for submitting to him. To my surprise, though, the feet stopped right infront of me, two fingers connecting gracefully to my chin and lifting my face.

Tiberius was gazing down at my short figure, his index and middle finger still under my chin, his thumb pressed to the space right under my lips, parting them slightly. Looking into his eyes finally, I notices dark swirls of gold mixed with the green, creating a beautiful scene before me. If only I could paint, I thought wistfully. This would make an amazing piece.

Suddenly, the gold swirls in his eyes grew and completely swallowed up the green, leaving nothing but a bright orb in the iris. Tiberius then growled lowly and backed me up against the wall, his hands pushing against my upper arm to keep me in place. Lowering his head into the crook of my neck, he pressed his soft lips against my skin, kissing and gently nipping as he went down my neck and along my collarbone. I stood frozen in shock, rigid under his slowly tightening grasp. I had never been kissed by a boy before! Sure, I wanted to kiss some people before, but I never did. What do I do now?

'What is he doing?!', I frantically asked Nikita, hoping she knew what was going on.

'His wolf is taking over! Get Tiberius back, or we might end up being mated in this hallway!', Nikita demanded.

As his lips were making their way to the dip in my collarbone, the exact place males marked their mates, I started saying his name, hoping it would bring Tiberius back and let him control his Wolf again.

"Tiberius? Tiberius, please stop. You're-Agh!," I started, but stopped when he kissed my sweet spot. A low, throaty growl sounded from his throat in satisfaction, and he kept licking and grazing his teeth over the same spot.

'Focus, Ellie! It's too soon to be marked!', Nikita shouted at me, causing me to snap out of my Euphoria.

"Tiberius, you're hurting me. Please stop, Alpha," I tried, since he actually was hurting my upper arms in his iron grip.

Immediately he pulled back and looked at me in the eyes, loosening his grip. His forest green eyes with golden swirls came back, and they were filled with guilt. Pulling up my sweater sleeve and looking at my light purple arm, he sighed and bowed his head in shame.

"Elenore, I'm so sorry. Xander took control, and he really wants to mate you right now. Well, I do too, but I'm not going to do that until the time is right" Tiberius said, his voice thickening with lust.

I felt my cheeks heat up, my eyes widening with surprise. A faint smile grew on my lips at the thought. He wants to mate me?

For some reason, I found that really flattering; That his wolf wants mate me, and that he does too. Wait, what am I saying? Why do I feel like this? We just met for goddess's sake!

Tiberius cleared his throat, stepping back from my body with his calloused hands in his pockets. "Well I'm going to go tend to Alpha work in my office. I'll be down for dinner at 7:30, and in the meantime you can just roam around or do whatever, but Elenore?" he asked with his right eyebrow raised, catching my attention.

"Yes, Tiberius?"

"Don't leave the Mansion. I have guards placed in and around the house, so if you try to escape, I will find out. And there will be consequences." he said simply, his voice lowering to almost a growl at the end. Threatening, much?

Swallowing thickly, I quietly answered with a "Yes, Alpha." Realizing my mistake and correcting myself before he could snap at me, replying with a "Yes, Tiberius," instead.

"Good. If you need me, ask Mahala where my office is. She knows." Turning on his heel, he started walking back the way I came, but stopped before he turned down the stairs. "Oh, and one more thing, Elenore. Your room is right there," he told me pointing to the door on the right less than 4 feet away from me. I blushed once again walked over to it, my back facing the door while I watched him walk away. Trying to hide a smile from his face, he started down the stairs, his burly arms swinging by his side.

Letting out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding, I relaxed against my door, the handle stabbing me in the spine.

"Ow.."I grumbled, turning to the door and rubbing my back. Opening the door and walking in, I closed the door behind me and walked over to my now-made bed. Who made it? I wondered to myself. As if I had just realized it, I remembered that I hadn't seen anyone else here except for Haley and Tiberius. Strange..

'Haley? Are you still in the Mansion?', I asked, hoping she's reply with a yes.

'Duh, Ellie. I'm the Beta's mate,' she replied sarcastically, happiness leaking into her sentence near the end. I laughed lightly, glad that she's still the same Haley she's always been.

'Yay! Well can you show me around the mansion? I don't wanna walk around alone..It's creepy..', I thought back honestly. Seriously, wondering around this huge place alone, not seeing anyone else around? Yea, creepy!

Haley laughed, replying with a 'Sure' while I waited, flopping back on my Queen sized bed. Ironic, I thought, smiling to myself at my little joke.

After another minute, I heard thumping coming up the hallway, so I quickly got up and went behind the door again, a small plan forming in my head.

Knock, Knock, Knock!

The door swung in, and Haley started to make her way in my room."Ellie? Come o-" she was cut off .

"RAAGH!!" I screamed, jumping out from behind the door and crouching down, my arms spread out wide and teeth bared.

"AAGGHH!!", Haley shrieked with her high pitched scream. I watched, laughing like the child I am, as she jumped back into the doorframe and grabbed her heaving chest, giving me an icy glare. "Why would you DO that?!" she yelled at me, a smile taking the place of the scowl moments before.

Clutching my stomach from laughing so hard, I wheezed out a, "Oh, you know you love me, Hay Hay" and helped her up. Accepting my outstretched hand, we started out of my room and turned right towards the stairs.

"This hallway is for guests," she explained, motioning down the hallway we just came from. There was a total of 16 doors down this hallway. Walking down the twisting stairs, we were met with a grand foyer. A large crystal and black brass chandelier hung from the tall ceiling, and the white tile floor glittered from the light outside.

"This is the foyer, and the room right there," she pointed to a room to the left of the staircase," is the dining room. We'll all be eating there later tonight." Glancing in that room, I saw a long wooden that could fit 32, a large chair sitting at one end. Following Haley throughout the rest of the house, I found the kitchen, 2 living rooms, countless closets, a large meeting room, and living quarters for maids, who I found out were trusted low- ranking pack members from all different territories.

Remembering not seeing any other people in the Mansion today, I asked Haley about it. "Where is everybody? Do they have the day off or something?"

"No, they're still working, but Alpha Connall told them all to remain hidden so you didn't feel overwhelmed on your first day here.", she explained smoothly, running her hands over a polished table on the 2nd floor in a hallway she hadn't named yet. Aw, He did that for me? That's actually kinda..sweet!

"Oh, well where are we now?" I asked, changing the subject. We were facing a creme colored hallway on the opposite side of the stairs that the guest rooms were at.

"This is where the top ranking Wolves sleep, including Alpha Connall.. ammselph.." Haley muttered at the end, so I couldn't understand her.

"What?" I questioned confusingly.

Sighing heavily, Haley turned to me and started fiddling with her thumbs, her face turning red. "And myself," she muttered.

It took me a minute, but I finally got it. "Oh my goddess, you're SLEEPING with Beta Gail?!", I practically screamed, a huge grin plastered on my face. Haley slapped her hand over my mouth, an exasperated look on her face.

"No, Ellie! We're not sleeping together! Well, okay, we KINDA are, but it's not what you think!" she looked at me pleadingly. I smiled knowingly, already knowing what she meant; I just like giving her a hard time. Haley's not the kind of girl to already be mated with someone after only 2 days with them.

"We sleep in the same BED, Ellie. That's it! On my first day here, I was sleeping alone and was having like a panic attack or something, and I couldn't bother you because you were hurt, so I went to him and slept in the bed with him," she ended shrugging. I smiled and placed a hand on her shoulder.

"I knew what you meant, Haley. I just like getting you flustered," I said, giggling at her 'threatening' glare. "So where is Beta Gail, anyway?" I asked, wondering if he had to hide from me also.

"Oh, he had to go patrol the borders with a few other pack wolves. He'll be back late tonight," she ended sadly. I gave her a soft hug, and we started walking back down the hallway.

Reaching my room, she told me that it's almost 7, so I should go get ready. After a small goodbye, I closed my door and went to the bathroom to do my business. After I was done, I washed my hands and decided how I wanted to look for dinner. Taking the advice of Haley earlier, saying that dinner wasn't that formal, I decided on keeping my jeans on while changing the cute sweater for a tank top and soft white cardigan.

Going back to the bathroom, I sifted through all the different makeup items and decided on wearing a little blush, powder, and mascara. Taking out my french braid, I shook my hair out and put it in a ponytail, wrapping it with a small white bow. Satisfied with my end result, I glanced at the clock and saw it was..7:38! I'm late!

'Elenore!', Mahala shouted at me through mink link.

'I'm coming!', I answered back frantically.

Rushing through the door and sprinting down the hallway and stairs, I slid to a stop on the slick floor infront of the dining room. Tiberius was sitting in the large chair at the head of the table, and Mahala was sitting 2 chairs down on his left. Tiberius looked at me with a raised eyebrow, while Mahala looked at me with wide eyes. Smiling sheepishly, I walked up to the table and started to sit directly across from Haley until Tiberius stopped me.

"Sit here," he said, pointing to the chair to his right. I nodded and pulled it out, taking a seat and scooting in. No food was on the table, but as soon as I walked in 2 older women walked in with plates of food in their hands. One short, plump woman with short brown hair sat a plate of steak with mashed potatoes infront of me, along with silverware. Looking up and thanking her, she smiled delightfully and responded with a small "You're welcome" before walking out. The other woman, who was slender with long blonde hair and small nose, sat the food infront of Haley and Tiberius, neither of which thanked the woman. She walked out, and we began eating in uncomfortable silence. Tiberius, though, didn't seem to notice.

Once we were done, the same 2 women came and collected out plates, and I thanked her once again. When the plates and glasses were gone, Tiberius looked over at me, a disapproving look on his face. "Elenore, you don't have to thank the servants. They work for me, and you are my mate, their soon to be Luna. They are below us."

Without hesitating, I replied "You know, I was one of 'them' a few days ago. You saw it yourself; me selling fruits and vegetables with my family in the Stands just to earn enough money to survive. They were doing something I could've done myself. They made the food, brought it to us, and cleared the table. I think that deserves at-least a 'Thank you'." I replied, a sudden courage flowing through my veins.

Tiberius studied my face and cocked his head, as if he were trying to figure me out.

Standing up suddenly, I pushed my chair back and stood, my back straight with confidence. "Excuse me, but I'm going to bed. Goodnight, Haley," I said, nodding to her, her eyes wide and mouth open slightly, while maintaining a monotone voice.

"Alpha Connall." I dared, nodding to him as well, who had a faint sly smile teasing his lips. Turning on the ball on my feet, I strut out of the dining room, up the stairs, down the hallway, and into my room.

Sighing, I washed the makeup off my face and brushed my teeth. I then changed into a pair of pajamas; plush pants, a cotton top, and fuzzy socks. Flopping back onto my bed with a sigh, I snuggled under the cold covers, and let sleep take me over..
